While this is not meant to count as our weekly social media post (Wasabi Wednesday, if you will), I'm pleased to set free our newest directory. Added to our Premium Content, the Social Directory lists social media sites that accomplish one of three things: allowing direct outbound links, providing profiles that rank well in search engines, or serving as great places to promote link-worthy content. Some sites serve more than one of these purposes.
As is our first link directory, this is a work in progress and we will continually add new sites. My research for the Web 2.0 Awards has already uncovered some fantastic finds, even though my blog post about said research may have led you to believe otherwise.
Each entry includes the number of inlinks a site has, as told by Yahoo! Site Explorer. The site's PageRank is also listed, as is the location of the live link or the potential URL of the strong profile.
Announcing the Social Media Directory

Thanks for the feedback, guys. This was Rand's idea: I compiled the site's links, their PageRanks, the location of profiles, categories, etc. Danny (our awesome intern) put it all together, so it was a team effort. All of us, but specifically Rebecca, Danny and I, will be scouting out new entries all the time. A "strong profile" that specifically interested me was SlideShare. Given a few good links, that profile seems to rank pretty quickly.
Nicely done!
Is there a link to it from the premium dashboard yet or am I having one of my 'special moments'?
Every moment for you is pretty special, isn't it Stephen?
But yes: no link yet, I don't think. We'll do something about that today.
Still no link added on SEO Dashboard. I had to visit this Blog Post to go to the Social Media Directory link.
Definitely - I see presentations I've uploaded there ranking on all sort of long tail terms
Great list. You might want to consider adding Naymz a reputation management and networking site, and perhaps Spock.
Myspace is also conspicuously missing. I'm not personally a fan, but is that a personal decision? Just curious since it seems like a pretty all encompassing list.
Maybe, Jane thinks MySpace does not follow under any category: "accomplish one of three things: allowing direct outbound links, providing profiles that rank well in search engines, or serving as great places to promote link-worthy content."
You're correct: Myspace no longer allows direct outbound links, and profiles have been missing from search results for everything but the easiest of long tail keywords. As for promoting linkworthy content, Myspace News isn't much to write home about, and publishing content on your own page seems to only be really useful if you are a musician, film maker or comedian.
"...and profiles have been missing from search results for everything but the easiest of long tail keywords."
I beg to differ. See search result number three.
Warning: This link contains a search for the keyword "porn".
Edited to include warning.
However, that Myspace account enjoys over 1,000 inlinks, whereas we've seen other social media sites rank well with far less links to back them up.
For the "name" of my Myspace account, you have to travel all way back back to result #20 to find it.
That's a tough keyword to rank for. I suspect there are a great deal more sites that have way more than 1,000 links that don't rank for that keyword. Who knows, maybe Google has a "contrarian view" element to its algorithm to provide an element of non-bias in its SERP's, and if not for that, the site wouldn't rank so highly.
I won't argue the Myspace profile placement because I don't know how active you are in promoting it, although I suspect from your comments that your participation is a whole lot less than on the other social sites that precede it.
In any case, it's your list and you're the social media expert - not me. I was just inquiring.
Thanks again.
I'm basing this off of past experience as well: we used to be able to count on Myspace pages to rank for just about anything, and the same was true for Squidoo lenses. They were magical: "sure things" in rep. management campaigns. Now, Google won't rank most of our profiles, even given "uncompetitive" keywords and quite a number of links.
The profile that ranks for "porn" could well be benefitting from a diversity factor, which Google seems to like. In reference to another blog post we have up right now, we suspect that RipOffReport.com may be benefitting from this diversity factor as well.
As an aside, my Facebook page ranks second at Yahoo for my name and nowhere at Google.
Very interesting. Thanks for the explanation Jane.
Which is strange as I've just seen a guide that MySpace prepare for clients about how to SEO paid for profiles. Guess who they link to for advice on title tags? You guy!
Haha, it seems that we have changed our minds...
Oh, the irony! They're probably just fishing for a reciprocal link from a true authority site!
Darn it... I'm running out of excuses to not go premium!
Why do you guys have to be so... well... useful?!
That's what I was thinking; this is "premium member upgrade bait", at it's best.
I just took it today....hee haaaa
Vicious. This is great for reputation management and link building.
Thanks Jane, great list to continue with my link building task.
This is a great list! I'm having a hard time looking for this. Thanks for sharing your resources
A question - Is it enough to create a profile or do you recommend putting effort into increasing visibility of each of the profiles.
Assuming limited resources, how do we figure out which one is worth going after.
A small to medium amount of participation on the site in question is usually enough to improve the profiles' visibility quite a lot.
What about Vox? It seems to rank pretty well and very fast too.
Its time to post something in YouMoz to win the Premium Membership although i may not qualify for it.Ahh! its better than making my own Social Media Sites list.
Just though you might like to know about 2 new social bookmarking websites (with do follow links and profiles) launched this month for your social media directory. Share A Bargain (UK) and Bookmarked By Us are both 'bookmarking for bargains' sites that you can use to highlight the best deals on your e-commerce site as well as special offers, discount codes etc.
Excellent resource!!! I am sure that I am going to use it in the very near future!
That could be very helpful. One day I'll talk my boss into buying a premium member account...one day.
I highly recommend it.
LOL did it take you more than one year to make sure it's worth it?
OK just kidding :)
Nah, I got an email notification on the comment, I REEEEALLY like pro membership :)
There are several here I didn't know about, Excellent Resource! thanks,
When I started to use social media, I really thought I would never really spend time there. And I find myself spending hours! Facebook, Linkedin, Goodwizz, Badoo, you name it, I am on all of them, but I lose so much time. They each have their addictive principles, flattering my ego, popularity, connections, etc. Clever people who make these portals. Anyway, I wish actually I did not spend so much time on these, and I guess I will be using this ranking and directory to help me navigate between the networks. Thanks and I will be watching out!
Another great resource - thanks Jane and mozzers for putting this together. If it is bait for premium membership upgrade so be it. I just upgraded a few days ago and feel like I'm getting my investment back in spades!
Just took a look at it and I am even more pleased for signing up for the premium membership. Great job SEOMOZ, keep it coming!!
Jane, this is a fantastic resource. Thank you
David
I have used this directory for my sites at 2009 ;)) It's useless now IMO
I'd be a lot more excited about Digg if it wasn't becoming (became long ago) a Shout/Spam fest...
Wow, that's a great resource! Thank you!
Excellent Resource, no suprise to see digg there :)
Great work! Nicely presented too, as always from seomoz. I was just putting together a smm process doc using our (continually updated) list of social sites. There are several here I didn't know about, thanks!
Thanks Jane and team. This is great.
Just curious, why is Sphinn there twice.
I'll take a look, but I imagine it's in there twice because it fulfills two of the criteria: probably direct link sources and link-worthy content promotion.
That's definitely a very useful and comprehensive list, haven't heard of a lot of them before - Thanks! I'm missing YOUmoz though :-)
Excellent resource. I will be using it over next few months for my projects :-)
Nice job, Rebecca, Danny and Jane! Looks like I'll have to find somw time to check the ones I have not seen before... And a great gift for Wasabi Wednesday! ;)
Rand, Jane, will you stop luring me for premium membership ? lol :)
Great post, another fantastic resource for me to explore. This list will no doubt be very useful in my explorations of the Social Media landscape.
great list, is there/will there be any weight added to it, as in best to last?
I'm a little concerned about "comparing apples with oranges" in terms of adding a quality score, but it is on my list of things to add at some point, assuming I can come up with a good way to give fair values.
Consider that to be a very long-winded way of saying "yes!"
awesome! apples and oranges... reminds me of a great movie quote... "...we are all fruit!"
