UPDATE FROM RAND: I just wanted to say how proud I am of Jane for slogging through this. It was literally three months of work, interrupted by several client projects, to put this together in a finished version. What I see is a document that's incredibly valuable. While the older, free Social Media Tactics piece still rocks, this one really expands on the MOST useful sites and the BEST tactics for conducting SEO, traffic building, branding and networking through the social portals. The depth of information and the incredible number of case studies that really show off the power of the networks are what make this one of my favorite pieces we've ever done.
I'm really proud of you, Jane - it's amazing to think how far you've come. I'd doubt there are more than a handful of people in the world who have your affinity with SMM, and that's saying something.
BTW - I'm home sick today with whatever I caught in SJ (it just won't seem to shake), so yes, I'm using the SEOmoz blog to chat with Jane :)
Thanks for all the kind words, people. The articles are fun to work on while taking a lot of time / effort. Hope you all find it useful!
Not only useful, but fun(ny) to ready. I found myself chuckling out-loud in the office a few times - (I just tell people the voices in my head are telling me jokes and they seem to buy it...)
I just killed a small tree printing out all 55 pages of this killer guide.
I may have to list it as one of my favorite books on my facebook page!! ;)
It's very hard to keep up with the ever-changing social space and this type of effort helps the whole community.
Jane, expect a call from Cliffs Notes any day now for a freelance writing gig.
Rand, I would be curious to see how many users actually purchase this piece instead of becoming premium for a few $$'s more.
Premium Rocks!
Thank you for all the handwork....it's benefits all!
Jane I can't wait to check this out, as you probably know I am a big fan of the social media guide you made before.
By the way, one of the most over heard things at SES was...
"Where is Jane?" :)
Jane was here :(
Rand: I don't think Jane's "affinity with SMM" is an appropriate topic for a public forum ;)
Aah! That does sound so bad!
Just teasing. It's nice to have a boss that actually appreciates what you do and is willing to say so. Of course, he might just be trying to get back on your good side after not sending you to California.
Well at least staying here meant that I didn't catch the crud that they've all come down with since SES finished! It seems that a lot of people who went to the conference got sick!
Tear.
Yes, I'd really like to know who it was that got the entire SEO community sick. I bet Jason Calacanis was there secretly coughing on door knobs and room keys.
[sniffle, cough]
Ew, you got Mahalitis.
haha
I bet that won't be showing up on the recent press page ;)
For real.
Or maybe it was actually Calacanis secretly disguised as Sammy Davis at the Webmaster party. That guy was mingling with EVERYBODY.
That guy touched me there of course I was pretty drunk and may have paid him to do it.
BTW Sorry Dave Naylor for the whole pro-wrestler routine the next time I start with the Patron at lunch someone just shoot my big ass with a tranquilizer dart or something and then tell the next day I had a good time at the party.
The curse of posting how fun it is to get drunk at SES.
You Linkedin portion of the article was incredibly useful, I immediately made those suggested changes.
The Delicious write up was bang-on as well.
Great job./bow
Thanks! I'm glad you've found it useful :)
Thanks for the article, Jane.
If you want a checklist that covers many more niche social sites (in less detail), I recommend Michelle MacPhearson's social media guide.
Yes, there is a wacky landing page, but it is worth signing up for. The guide is free and very worthwhile, IMHO.
I was eagerly anticipating the release of this guide, too. Thanks!
I like the fact that the information is far more current than anything similar on the web.
Many folks are still recommending building profiles as a good SMO strategy. :-)
Great work!
Looks excellent, I've printed it, bound it, and now I'm off for Starbucks to give it a read while basking in the warmth of a venti latte.
Thanks for the guide Jane, I've already started reading it. Keep up the great work.
Ah for a premium membership.
Maybe next time it's my turn to make a cuppa, tactics such as salt instead of sugar in the coffee will finally persuade my boss to reach into his pocket and stump up the money...
Until then, I'll just make do with the free stuff.
Story of my life!
Must. Get. Premium. Membership.
Must. Stop. Typing like. Captain Kirk...
It's really sad what a couple of days of watching G4 will do to a person.
Sounds like great work, Jane, and even if you did miss out on SES, you apparently also missed out on whatever nasty crud folks got infected with. Looking forward to reading it as soon as I can finagle a Premium Membership. :)
Three Cheers to Jane.
This was the article i was waiting since long to be added so i can upgrade to Premium Membership. And reading all those positive comments it's become a must have now.
Thanks for doing a great job.
well done, this guide is exactly what I've been looking for. Thanks!
Regards,
Deano
I have been waiting for this article since it was nothing more than "Coming Soon" on the Premium Members banner. Having just browsed through it, I am sure this is one I will read over and over. Thanks for your hard work, this is one of the reasons I signed up for a membership!
>home sick
Dude. EmergenC or C-blast from GNC. It's like a tang flavored powder that saves you every time. Don't leave home without them. Seriously. If it wasn't good, I wouldn't feel the need to proselytize for it.
When you feel cold like symptoms coming on, make sure to have it around, and drink one within the first two hours. Then two more a couple hours apart. It's like 10x your daily vitamins or something - can't be good for the kidneys/ liver, but it saves the day, and keeps your week of sickness/ recovery down to a day or two at most. Once you're sick you're screwed - gotta have it around for the onset. I swear it has saved me from MANY a cold, and I haven't got sick in the last dozen or so conferences (which it IS real easy to get sick at shaking hands and abusing your body and whatnot)
Likewise, I've found that a handful of echinacea and vitamin C at the first subtle little twinge of a cold almost always works to nip it in the bud.
Todd - you've never steared me wrong before - I'll have to give it a try. Thanks!
Thanks for compiling such a comprehensive document.
At first glance this looks great - can't wait to find some time to read it through.
Thanks!
I have been in two minds whether to upgrade to premium membership. This may be the kicker.
I like that SEOMoz doesn't rush into getting things out just to be quick. It appears that they would rather deliver a polished product.
Well, to be honest, we do sometimes rush out the door with the tools, but we'll put more effort into controlling that in the future. I certainly prefer the highly polished stuff :)
Nice to get an honest answer once in a while.
There were short cuts I could've taken in order to get this out faster, but the end result of spending the time to write a longer piece always pays off :)
Congratulations on getting another article out.
I'm sure it will be a great read. Congrats on getting it out there guys
On a topic I spend too much time in so would have been interesting for me to look at
Wow, Jane, this article looks fantastic! I'm sorta glad you were back in the office, finishing this off. I've been looking forward to it. Great job!
I plan on reading it thoroughly later, but a quick glance shows lots of great info and I love all the screenshots of the various sites...very helpful.
Thank you Jane!
The work that you put into researching and organizing all this info must have been tremendous. It's appreciated.
Wow, great job on this article. You guys should put all this stuff together and publish a book. Maybe through Lulu.com :).
Sounds like a great read. Looks like I have to cough up some green for SEOmoz (Rand keep selling these and you won't need VC money). Either that or post like mad to get my free subscription.
