Aditya Mahesh from BlogOnExpo, an online blogging & web conference done through video and podcasts, asked us to contribute a segment on social media. Last week, Scott and I took nearly an hour of filming time (and Scott contributed many hours of editing) to create a 15 minute long presentation on the principles of social media marketing:
I'm saying something about the "linkerati" here, hence the air quotes :)

If you watched last week's Whiteboard Friday, you'll notice we used a similar editing technique (don't worry, we're not going to go overboard with it in the future). The video's a little fun, a little more in-depth, and hopefully educational for those who like to consume their online marketing concepts through show-and-tell. You can find the video - SEOmoz's Social Media Marketing - on the BlogOnExpo site, along with other presentations from folks like Neil Patel and interviews with others, like Matt Mullenweg.
Many thanks to Aditya for the BlogOnExpo production and a special thanks to Scott Willoughby for his hard work in creating the video.
p.s. I note that the video seems strangely unavailable on Google Video right now. I had to download it to my machine to get it to work...
Great video breaking things down. I think you may have overdone the Benny Hill bit. Kind of like the Family Guy where Peter fights the Chicken for a 1/3 of the episode.
God, I hate that episode. Point taken. It was a bit overdone, but I tried to zip through all of the Whiteboard changes in 20 seconds or less.
Definitely don't get me wrong, the other video that you did it with, I cracked up at.
I'm expecting more humor in the upcoming videos to lurer in the linkarazzi.
Executionability? Great new word.
Nice video too - I quite like the Benny Hill bit, though I can see why you might want to get a new trick at some point...
Just wait for the CGI to kick in!
I was just about to post on Executionability and now I feel denied of my due pedantry ;(
Now that is some social media marketing. Excellent
Very good, professional, and articulate. I'll be sure to show this video to a few people around the office. thanks
NEVER USE THAT SONG AGAIN!
It's verboten. I din't realize this video would be made public, but I thought the effect was funny, which is why I used it in Whiteboard Friday last week. But it's been done now, so you won't hear "Yakety Sax" again unless it's Jane and Rebecca chasing each other around in circles.
Now that would be great linkbait.....
Excellent stuff, I found also that if you don't set up profies under your online name often somebody else might. I guess it depends how obscure your name is but I've missed the boat ona couple including the .com domain which I'm most gutted about!
It was difficult to justify to the office that I was working when Benny Hill kept playing! Next video make some cool industrial noises so I sound really creative. Keypads, mouse clicks, error beeps... anything but Benny Hill!
Only Joking Benny is fine. They'd never believe I was working anyway...
Excellent video Rand!
Excellent. You're really getting good at teaching. I wish you had a daily video post. How does the time required to create a video compare to writing a blog. About equal?
With the time it takes to prep, shoot, and edit, it's much longer.
I have a question here: What do you (or anyone here) do to enhance the SM visitors' engagement? Is it also network specific? Per my experience for example StumbleUpon visitors are more likely to subscribe than Digg visitors; my guess is that SU [naturally] does a better job in targeting traffic than Digg.
As for the latter, does anyone here think that Dogg traffic is worth it as with me it seems to be no use both in terms of link bait and visitors' engagement [in SEO niche at least]. They just come and go...
