This morning, Jane shared with me some amusing Twitter messages some folks were sending to each other. I had thought about joining Twitter in the past but never really cared much for the service. To me, there's not much appeal to typing "@soandso lol listening to Marky Mark and the Funky Bunch and thought of you." It all seems kind of pointless, right? I mean, I certainly don't care what my friends ate for breakfast, when they clipped their toenails, why the line at the bank is taking so long, and so on. Nor do I expect anyone to care about my trivial musings. Thus, I stubbornly backed into a corner and remained a staunch anti-Twitterer (Twit? I have no idea) while all of my coworkers and colleagues hopped on the bandwagon. (Except you, Jeff. Stay strong.)
As part of a not-so-subtle "eff you" to Twitter, I recently joined Plurk and started playing around on it. Plurk, I'm told, is "like Twitter," only it's on a timeline. I like Plurk--you earn "karma points" for being active on the site and for referring friends, and the more karma points you get, the more stuff you can unlock (like profile templates, Plurk mascots, and various emoticons). I fancy myself the Jane Copland of Plurk--currently I have almost 60 karma points and I've enjoyed getting to know some folks on the site.
The more I used Plurk, the more I (sort of) understood why people use Twitter. Sure, I'm still a casual Plurk user--I barely use it on nights and weekends--but nonetheless, I enjoy sharing links, using the site for social media marketing, and just typing random sentences and thoughts. Likewise, I enjoy the sort of information my Plurk buddies share with me. And thus, my Twitter hatred softened a bit. I started to see the non-attention whore benefits of being on Twitter, like sharing links and getting traffic to your site or to your blog posts, sharing viral marketing and social media marketing efforts, polling your colleagues or using Twitter to do research for a report or article, learning SEO tricks and tips, and hell, even using the site to write your presentations or articles for you. Okay, I'll admit that from a marketing perspective, it makes sense to join Twitter. So I did.
I tried to register @squishee and discovered that someone had already nabbed it. Damn. Next I tried @rkelley, to no avail. I started to panic. Was I so late to the Twitter party that I wouldn't be able to register a damn user name? Oddly enough, however, the least original and what I thought would be the most common option, @rebeccakelley, was available, so I claimed it. To my surprise, I was already following a couple people (Dave Naylor and Michael McDonald), and one person (Mike McDonald) was following me. I couldn't figure out how that could have happened until I realized that these folks probably sent me a Twitter invite many moons ago, so when I finally relented and joined they were automatically added as my friends.
The vast, unexplored horizon
With my bare bones profile officially live, I published a Plurk message stating that I had finally joined Twitter, then I went to lunch. When we came back Jane Twittered to her 596 followers that I had finally gotten off my ass and joined. And wouldn't you know it, just like that I received over 30 freakin' emails notifying me that "so and so" is now following you on Twitter!" Geez, that was fast. I'm a little scared.
Dear God, I've opened Pandora's Box
So, I'm on Twitter. Though I know what to use it for, I don't know how to use it. My phone is a Razor knockoff that's partially broken, so I don't see myself using it to send out Twitter messages any time soon. I'm told that Twitter is all ghetto slow and has been breaking a lot lately, so I don't even know what features I can use and which I shouldn't touch with a ten foot pole out of fear of incurring the wrath of the mighty fail whale. I'm like your grandpa who takes your advice and gets an email address so you can more easily correspond with him...and then you realize that he registered "[email protected]." And now he only sends you chain letters, animated greeting cards, and <no subject> 20-size font emails that are inconsistently capitalized and talk about his latest mole checkup at the doctor.
Still, I'm optimistic. Jane's only been using Twitter since March of this year, and by now she seems like a seasoned vet. Hopefully my learning curve will be just as sharp. I don't think I'll become Twitter obsessed (unlike a lot of SEOs, I enjoy time away from the Internet and often spend at least one day every weekend offline), but hopefully I'll learn to like it and appreciate its benefits. I think my inaugural Twitter message (Tweet? Twoot? Twit? Argh...) will be to link to this post...let's see what happens, shall we?
Welcome, trust me, on the whole (minus the distraction) it's worth it :)
I really don't know how you all follow sooo many people on Twitter . . . I struggle to keep track of 30, and I couldn't imagine how overwhelmed I would be if I started out following 150+ on day one like Rebecca.
Props to all of you!
Thank heavens I'm not the only SEO who doesn't get the brouhaha over Twitter. I joined just to experiment and got bored of it quickly. And I get messages from so and so following me - but I don't use Twitter. I barely talk to friends on IM these days - just not sure what the big deal is and where the fun is.
What a refreshing perspective--thanks for providing an alternate opinion of Twitter!
Yes but she's hopelessly addicted now. You managed to remain clean. Can't say the same for poor squishee!
Welcome to the madness/fun/production killer that is Twitter! By Pubcon you'll be seen on your panels tweeting like the rest of them
Does anyone actually see some profitabilty or added income at least that has come from heavily using twitter?
It seems to me to be like having all yer yahoo, msn, google etc etc contacts all in one conference place all talking at the same time and all spending too much time being pretty unproductive. The excuses being that it is "networking"
Im rather dubious of many of these networking places as it is simply because I believe 99.9% of users are only following the crowds, dont want to miss out on something and above all are doing it for their own marketing purposes, not to actually build a community that you can all benefit from a co-op like niche.
Ive yet to hear many stories of how spending x amount of hours a week chatting to everyone else who has invaluable time on thier hands has led to increased sales conversions and more profit turnover than spending x amount of hrs doing other forms of 'advertising' would have brought.
I suspect that it is a very small number that manage to actually monetize this type of networking. For most I suspect that that time could be better spent, particularly if working in an office as an employee of a company. I imagine that many companies would see it as time wasteing in many cases.
But then I could be wrong :-)
I don't know about everyone else, but yesterrday I was able to answer a Q&A by reaching out to my Twitter contacts. I sent out a question asking for some software recommendations and got a lot of answers.
Soo this is the new search for advice medium as oppose to using Google etc for you in the future then?
That email screen shot is priceless.
Hmm, I shared tweets with you? No!
[glad it worked]
apparently,
"Resistance is futile"
"You must become part of the collective."
I dub thee Borg.
Well at least we know you didn't sign up for the editorial link you could get in your bio. :P
re: . And wouldn't you know it, just like that I received over 30 freakin' emails notifying me that "so and so" is now following you on Twitter!"
Dude... I've started filtering those to my spam box... because if I see one more follow request from random spammer posing as user - I'm gonna go postal..
Yeah... I'm not sure Twitter has a learning curve.
Rules:
Don't be a bitch - oh wait, that works great for some
Don't post too often - oh wait, yeah that works for others, too
Don't get personal - ignore pageoneresults, that's what it's about
Just have fun and welcome to the party!
ps - GET AN AVATAR. Damn your Twitter page is ugly right now.
;-)
Hey, even ugly profiles need lovin', too!
It's beautiful now! :)
And here are some great twitter commands. I gave those to you so that you don't make the same mistakes as Rand. ;)
twitter = why i am rarely on yahoo! IM anymore..
Is it just me that picked up on the fact that you take rather long lunches? :P
Twitter = goodness. You'll see. Welcome to the craziness. :)
Cheers
@trontastic
Wow you have people following you. Kinda makes me feel like you are being stalked o.0
LOL, welcome! Yet, Twitter won again! Now I have even more trust in the service :)
To tell you the truth, I was SHOCKED to see "Rebeccakelley is now following you on Twitter"in my email box today :) You made my day!
Welcome to Twitter - great post!! I did a post on SearchViews yesterday about the 7 types of Twitter user so you might want to check that out just to know what's in store...
It's amazing how much use you can get out of 140 characters...
Can you share the link?
I have only just got into facebook never mind twitter and friendfeed and i feel like all blogging and social network sites take away our real relationships with people, some of the people i have added as friends i would happily visit and chat with properly rather than engaging in a facile relationship when they never really know what's happening with you. How many times have we as human being openly acknowledged a truly bad break up via facebook or a terrible argument with your lover? People only scratch the surface with these sites and talk about the mundane experiences of life but all of the passion and truth of what being alive is lost. although i do face book it always makes me slightly sad because i never really believe what i read.
Although i have to admit I did meet my husband of nearly 4 years via www.lovestruck.com and we're happily married with two beautiful kids these are the real relationships I have. People i update with the stuff i want people to know about me never really know you at all, it feels like marketing your soul only there's really no point. In the short time i have been a member on facebook i haven't once thought i'm glad i know that about you, it always seems fake. My take on twitter is more of the same self indulgence crap, or am i wrong?
great post, love your style of writing. actually cracking up over here. yea, i can't seem to get myself on that either...
I'm another one who's constantly being encouraged to join the Twitter parade, but has thus far declined. I agree that it has useful implications for SEO marketing and whatnot, but what with the bad press about its unreliability lately, I'm going to pass the buck again!
About frigg'n time!
Btw, if anyone's looking for me...
https://twitter.com/status_girl
I've played with Twitter - still can't see the fun or usefulness in it. I've done the "twitter" thing on Facebook.... doesn't seem to mean too much to other people. And I ignore a lot of my friends' updates. What... am I missing? Am I too old?
Twitter is great for networking. Look for fellow SEO people or any other industry that you are interested in. People post lots of relevant links that help you to stay on top of things!
Nah, I hear ya. I don't use Twitter that much either. Some people are pretty obsessed with it. I'm more of a casual user like you. :)
Oh good - so not the only professional SEO who doesn't get it huh? That's a big relief... I'm either not interested in snooping around others... or not narcissistic enough to keep telling people what I'm up to...
I don't suppose announcing "I am fornicating" is really in good taste on Twitter is it?
Depends on who's following you... ;)
LOL - will take that under advisement
Joining the Twitter is one thing, keeping active there is another. I wonder what kind of people those active twitters are. Based on my observation, the following people tend to be more active there.
1. The professional social media marketers like us.
2. Those who care for trivial things about their friends, neighbors, celebrities and many others.
3. Those visionaries who always like to try something hot and new.
4. Those who become tired of other destinations like Facebook or Myspace.
So, can we conclude that Twitter is of some use for the social media marketers as long as the people in categories 2, 3, and 4 are still there? We just need to make sure how many people are in category 2 and how long people in categories 3 and 4 will stay there.
There goes the neighbourhood...
;)
Nice move rebecca! It's always nice to know when some famous SEOs take 2 minutes off to scratch their butt. ;)
Totally late comment but I bit the bullet yesterday and signed up as well @mgraybeal and I am still not sure what the purpose is or how to use it. But I guess one ought to at least try it and know what its all about. So there, I am following you as well. :-)
As I understand it, you can be a narcissist with Twitter and think other people will care about what you are currently doing. Or, you can have like... online tourette's and just spit out crazy stuff. I use it for my online tourette's..... but no one seems to care.
I do see more news about Twitter. One news recently was how Twitter got Johnson & Johnson to pull some drug ad cause some Twittering mother was offended. I don't know. I'd like to think I'm still young but maybe at 30 (just turned) I'm over the hill?
I'm late to comment here, but I know I nudged you on twitter about it: Welcome to the fold!
Now that the 'moz is 90% twitterpated (geezus, I can't belive I used that word.) wouldn't it make sense to add a Twitter URL to our 'moz profiles? There are many brilliant users who comment here that I'm sure have made excellent use of the 140 char limit on twitter. I'd love to follow those type of peoples.
i refer to posting a twitter message as twatting, or twatted. i really hope that one catches on.
Yeah I just joined twitter last week after prolonged urging from my friends and colleagues... I was completely reluctant, but after using it, I have really come to enjoy the banter with everyone. And I can't believe I just said that! :)
nothing to do with me, bekbek,.
Hmmm, maybe my profile became self-aware. I shall nickname it SkyNet.
Hey, my name's in the list of people who feverishly dropped what they were doing to follow you on Twitter! Awesome.
Eh, there's nothing to it. It's just another excuse not to do work.
Actually, it's pretty useful. Sometimes when I'm being lazy I can stay up to date on goings on by simply glancing at other people's tweets. It's like having your own research team...
Ha, looks like I was the 2nd person to follow you! :o)
Welcome to the dark side.
woohoo! Welcome to Twitter!!!
It is totally worth it...sure wastes a little time, but can't tell you how handy it is at the same time. Also pretty easy to figure out. Won't take you very long at all.
Hey, look, there I am in your (Pandora's) inbox!
IMO, the best way to use twitter is with a plugin like TwitterBar, TwitBin, or the like that will let you update without leaving your current browser page. It lets me Tweet a lot without dinging my productivity - like talking to my cubemates at the office.
Now you can use Mozilla Ubiquity which is even better!
You went over to the dark side :(
I thought we were the only non-twitterers (non-tweeters? non-tweetee?) left out there..
@rebeccakelley lol at plurk
Welcome to twitter ;)
Welcome to Twitter, Rebecca! :)
It is fun. Feel free to participate in our amazing social activities:
Hope you'll enjoy it :)
My nickname on Twitter is @eterniel - make sure you include me in those "I pay" party messages ;)
Have fun ;)
Welcome! :) Twitter will consume you....even if you resist. :p
Josh, Aren't you on a Twitter sabbatical right now? :-)
Welcome Aboard!!! :D :D
I only just joined twitter as well (@lucasng) and I must say, it's weird.
I definitely enjoying 'hearing' a lot more search/social media chatter than IRL. The informal nature of tweets on a topic usually make it much more interesting (i.e. not mundane/boring) than a blog or news commentary on the same subject.
I love the immediacy, especially for real time events. A good example is the Bayer plant explosion, @martinbowling is a resident of the area, and he twittered about the event (he was looking for his cats and dog - hope you and the animals are fine Martin!) before it made any online or offline news media.
The major issue I have is everyone I know who uses Twitter is predominantly overseas and in the search marketing industry!
still havent joined it just yet. plan to at some stage soon, for marketing and sharing links etc.
good story. thanks
Changed my mind and went to join, and realised that I had already joined a few weeks ago.
@paulpace is my twitter address. Just need to use it now. thanks for the story, gave me a reminder to set it up. thanks
Glad you assimilated.
Twitter has been a one way to get to know people and appreciate differences and find commonalities. Lately, it's replaced my RSS reader.
I have not participated much in SEOmoz lately, because I can't thumb using FireFox since June. What's funny is that, unwittingly, when I see something I really like on Twitter, I look for the Thumbs Up button.
It can be a time suck, so sometimes I just close it and practice Twitter withdrawal.
Looks like you've already taken to Twitter like a duck to water. Assimilation is complete!

One of us
I am new to Twittter as well and still figuring it out. To give a bit of perspective I don't even IM. I email. I txt my kids as otherwise I don't get an answer.
I started (sounds like a AA meeting) when I saw one of my competitors so I started a boring twitter just to be indexed by google like they were. Then I left that behind and started a more interesting (to me anyway) twitter for my swimming start up. Just because I could and it was fun I started twittering swim meet results live from a summer swim meet including pictures of happy swimmers who just won. The local press started following and did a story so I was thinking this was all good.
Then the dark side. I started getting emails that various unknown people with perhaps questionable career interests where following my swimming twitter. Perhaps they liked the pictures of (underage) swimmers dripping wet from the pool? What would the parents think? I blocked them and made the account private for a bit. For the Junior Nationals swim meet I twittered again but this time no pictures. I didn't get so many questionable friends but I still got a few.
Any recommendations on how to avoid being befriended by people you may not want to be your friends?
Yeah I totally didnt 'get' the twitter thing, until I noticed it being used for the marketing you speak of. Blog update notifications, new sites being launched etc etc and its pretty much all I use it for too.
Btw. you should have another '.... is following you' email now. :)
I also don't get the Twitter thing. I have no friends that I am aware of on it ... so I am at a loss as to what I should be doing on it.
I'm very glad you guys all discuss this though ... otherwise I'd be in the dark ... so thanks. I'll continue to live vicariously through you all for now ... : ) .
haha, I have *nobody* on there that I know. A bunch of random people started following me the other day. I follow a few people like merlin mann (43folders.com) and other inspirational developers / designers so I can be updated when they post on their blogs. Thats where I find the most value.
Alright thanks. I will now try to figure out how to follow someone. Seems a bit odd though to follow someone that you don't know. I tried searching my extensive email list to no avail. Thanks for the tip!
I've tried it and don't get it either but yet I still plug away....when I have time
Makes me smile till my cheeks hurt :)
I had the same thoughts about twitter. Now I have my account set up and I'm going to log on in a few moments ...
Just figured that I'd give it a chance too ...
