Let me explain. Yesterday I submitted a story to Digg. I didn't expect it to get on the home page, but I had an "Oh well, what the hell" mentality about it. My plan was to do the usual--shout it once and call it a day. After I submit a link to Digg, I typically shout the story to my friends in about three waves. You can only send a shout to about 100 friends at a time, so if you have 300 friends, you have to break the list up into thirds and shout the story 3 separate times. Also, Digg prevents you from sending the shouts immediately back to back--you have to send a shout, wait a while, then send it again. This is to prevent spamming and abuse.
Anyway, back to my story. Continue to gather around as if I'm telling you the tale of how John Henry was a steel drivin' man. I submitted my story and hit the "Share" button. When you click on "Share," it typically pulls up your list of friends who are able to receive shouts, and you can click on whoever you want to send your story to.
This time, however, instead of pulling up my friends list, I saw this message:
What? "Crikey"? What the hell is this? The box never loaded my friends list--the circle just perpetually turned. I tried typing in some friends' names to filter the list down, but nothing happened. I was effectively shout-blocked.
I pinged some colleagues on IM and asked them if they've ever had this happen to them before. One of my friends said, "How many friends do you have on Digg?" I looked:
I was a bit surprised to see that I had racked up over 550 friends, but still, not a huge deal, right? My friend responded with, "I don't have nearly that many friends." I asked around. Sure enough, I have a ton of friends on Digg. Most of the folks I talked to have less than 200.
Okay, so I have a lot of friends on Digg. That's not so bad, right? I mean, all I do is befriend people who become fans of me. The whole point on having friends on Digg is so that you can share stories with each other, and the Shout feature allows you to share stories with a large number of friends vs. having to contact them all one-by-one. Why then would Digg penalize me for having too many friends? Did I hit some mysterious "max number," like once you get to 500, it's too many? If that's the case, why don't they make it clear that you can only have a certain number of friends?
I don't see how they could think I'm a spammer. Here are my stats:

I don't see how they could think I'm a spammer. Here are my stats:
I've averaged less than one submit a month since I've joined (March 28, 2006), and none have made it to the home page. Of those submits, I've shouted probably about 5 of them. When I do shout, I send my shouts out exactly once. None of my friends receives the same shout from me more than one time. So, what the hell is going on here?
I filled out a bug report and emailed [email protected] with the subject "You guys shout-blocked me! I thought we were bros..." I haven't received a response from Digg yet save for a stupid automatic response regarding my bug report:
So, there you have it. I can't send shouts to people because I happen to have a large number of friends. Even though my stats prove that I'm not a spammer, Digg seems content to penalize me, anyway. I'll let you know if I ever receive an actual useful response from anyone at Digg (though one of my friends online pinged some of his buddies who work at Digg about the issue, and their response was a "We'll look into it" in an eye-rolling, whatever tone). Until then, however, I'll be surfing Digg with a cone around my neck like a neutered dog:

Hi -Yeah, of course, clearing my cookies will magically fix the ridiculous "Crikey!" message and let me send shouts again. (FYI, I humored them and tried it to no avail.) I currently still can't send shouts to people via the "Share" feature. Someone suggested that I start deleting friends because I look like a spammer with so many, but I really think that's unfair. If Digg wants you to have only a certain number of friends, they should put a cap on the number of friends you can have. Plus, as I said earlier, the whole frickin' point of befriending people on Digg is so you can check out stuff that they like, have dugg or commented on, and so you can send and receive stories. It's like the cable company turning off your cable access once you've bought HBO, Showtime, and Cinemax. That's one channel too many, so you can't see any of them now. Harumph.
Sorry for the inconvenience. Try clearing your cache/cookies and restart your browser. If you're still having problems, please email us back and we'll do our best to help you.
Thanks.

Bastards.
Postscript: Thanks a bunch to Lorna (check out the comments below) for helping me figure out how to pull up my buddies list letter by letter (it's a bit tedious, but it works). Looks like I'm not quite shout-blocked, I'm just slowed down a bit, but for crying out loud, you'd think that Digg could, you know, explain how to pull up lists of friends once you hit a certain number and need to start filtering the list in order to have it displayed at all. Instead of "Start typing to filter your friends list," the message could say "Type a letter to pull up the appropriate friends," or something to that effect. Digg, you suck. Lorna, you rock.

Digg was built by geeks and nerds, of course you're penalized for being too popular! It's retribution for them getting stuffed in lockers back in high school.
what the hell? you're Rebecca fucking Kelley! What's wrong with those people? I'm officially not going on the Digg anymore until they restore your ability to shout and stuff.
people. sheesh.
I like how you call it "the" Digg. Love it.
Digg seems to be a bit arrogant in their customer service. Regardless of thier reasons, not resonding to a users does nothing to demonstrate commitment to those that make their business work. We (cre8Buzz.com) have also had our issues with Digg, we were blocked as well. It took 6 weeks, multiple blog posts, https://www.cre8buzz.com/anthill/?p=259 to get a response, never mind an honest and fair resolution.
Digg claims to be for the democratization of content, however the experiences of many is like that of fascists. It's democracy, just thier type of democracy.
Will be interested in how this turns out for you. Hope it is better than for us and cre8buzz.
I laughed when I read this, I can totally see the programmers not ever thinking someone would accumulate a long list of friends. In the software industry, it seems everyone talks about "scalability", but nobody ever really thinks about it, or plans for it.
"You guys shout-blocked me! I thought we were bros..."
I LOL'd here.
Rebecca, you needed a good whacking with a newspaper to your shout (snout)
Okay crappy joke but I am in a rush at a library in a small mountain town.
I have just posted my schedule of places I will be, I am coming out of the woods for a few weeks. I may even bathe.
good to see you back here feedthebot! I've been wondering where you were...
Crikey! Feedthebot is back from his walkabout! ;)
Edit: Oops, spoke to soon. We look forward to your return to civilization, Pat.
Wow! That's unfortunate... good luck dealing with Digg support. They're notorious for doing absolutely nothing.
Odd though.. my friend is a recent to Digg and already has over 1000 friends no problem... We got an article to "Top in Digg" on the home page for a few hours and landed around 30,000 visitors because of the event. He's also submitted a lot more frequently...Wish I could help besides just offering an alternate scenario, best of luck!
You should use our Social Suite with the Digg friend analyzer and trim your friend list.
I'm sure there were other factors, but I spent an hour deleting the dead wood (cheap shotters), added some people with similar interests (30 minutes) and put two stories in a row at 800+.
It's all about the analytics.

PS - Free and ad-supported.
To which social sweet are you referring? Can you explain how the Digg friend analyzer works?
Seconded. This sounds interesting. I'm going to look at your profile and randomly follow links till I see what you're talking about...
Hi Oliver,
I've been Google Searching "Social Suite, Digg friend analyzer" and I'm not finding you anywhere, my friend!
Help! Can you provide a link to your tool? I need to trim my friend list badly!
Thanks!
Lorna Li
Hello Rebecca,
Thats too bad. Digg needs to rework its algorithm.
People will always find ways to hate on the popular girls :)Sounds like Digg gets a bit jealous when someone ends up with too many friends.
Seriously, though, you're right - there should be some info about how to filter your friends list in the FAQ's or something. Maybe bringing attention to it here will help this to happen.
Internet Marketing Badger aka Jennifer
Rebecca welcome to Black Hat... keep up the spamming it really works
Sorry bout that...that's too bad
Chances are... they are completely aware of it and are just trying to keep it quiet to quell the forthcoming outrage among digg users like yourself.
Ah... Digg. Had similar issues, emailed them, asked for a reason, got reply. Asked to remove all that, got no reply :-)
I have a lot of friends as well (619 and growing daily). I've only sent one shout to one person, but I've seen this message as well. Start typing in the filter box to narrow your search and that should get you going.
I mentioned in my post that I tried doing that, but nothing happened.
Apparently not. as lornali points out below. I might have said it a little too terse. In anycase....
Yeah, the problem was that I typed in an actual user name but for some reason it didn't pop up. I might have not given it enough time to pop up--there seems to be a lag when you type. Sorry for discouonting your suggestion!
have you tried different browsers?! - this is probably just a bug and when its announced as so - you could be seen as over reacting..
Yeah, I tried different browsers. Lornali helped me fix the issue--I just have to be patient while typing in letters so I pare down the friends list.
I have never seen such a thing! Although, I only have about 75 friends and NEVER use the shout box. But, either way I'd be interested in finding out what their response to this might be. I'd get with Mr. Baby Man or Reg or Mu to see what their thoughts are on the subject. They probably know more than the Digg Support Team anyways.
Wow... that's so bold of few! How many shouts do you get daily?
A lot. :)
I delete them if they become overwhelming, but during the work day I can usually check them out as they filter in.
There's three comments on the submission on digg right now. They really outline why so many people are annoyed with digg, and why new sites like Mixx and reddit are getting disgruntled users from digg. Not only is digg changing for the worst (the shout issue, the algo change) but the community there has broken down to little kids yelling at each other and making snotty comments back and forth.
Hey Cone neck -
That's ruff.
"Shout neutered?" Hmmm...most of your gender would say "Shout Spayed".
But then - you do have quite the set of cojones. ;)
I'm sure they'll get it worked out. In the meantime -
Have a great weekend Rebecca.
You shouldn't rely on shouts at Digg anyways. Let the community find the article on their own.
in a utopia that might work but in a feudal system i think you're off.
I don't solely rely on shouts to push a story. The good thing about shouts is that it gets you a decent number of votes to make it stand out amongst all of the other upcoming submissions. Other diggers might notice the story that has a lot of votes, click on it, and then judge the content to see if it's worth their vote. If it is, it'll make it to the home page. If not, it won't.
Hi Rebecca,
I know exactly what you are talking about but take heart! YOU HAVE NOT BEEN BLOCKED. I have nearly 1000 friends, and here's how you get around the "Crikey!' crap.
While the thing is churning, in the field where it says "Start Typing to filter your friends list" type in"a".
All your friends who begin with "A" will appear.
Click "Shout to All". All your "A" friends will be highlighted in green.
Wait a few seconds for this to stick (dunno why)
Replace "A" with "B". All your "B" friends will appear alongside your "A" friends. If your A friends get replaced, start over, and remember to pause between swapping out letters.
Click on shout to all. Repeat.
I thought I was blocked too, until I discovered this wierd workaround I discovered. I think you can shout up to 200 at a time.
Cheers,
Lorna Li

Lorna, you rock! Thanks for helping me with this. I'm still pretty pissed at Digg for not explaining this more clearly, but at least I now know that I've not been neutered, after all. :D
No wonder nothing of mine ever makes it anywhere on Digg. People like you spend all your free time redundantly shouting your story to 500+ people. Digg has already put into place a system that works. Post your story and let it ride its own merit. Digg should be used as a source of useful/entertaining articles, not for driving traffic to your ad-filled site.
I'm going to assume that you didn't read my post, which explicitly stated that despite the fact that I shout my submissions to my friends (once), none of my stories have ever made it onto the home page. Therefore, diggers do indeed judge the story on its own merits, no matter how many shouts I send.
