5. Post-Penguin Anchor Text Case Study
January 15 - Posted by Court Tuttle
It's no secret that Google's Panda and Penguin updates caused a lot of panic. Although I'm pretty turned off to information about these updates, I've been really interested in the anchor text issues surrounding the Penguin update. If sites that have over-optimized anchors lost traffic due to the update, it seems to make sense that sites can move up with relatively few (or without any) anchored links. I wanted to test that idea and decided that it was time for a good, old fashioned case study.

January 10 - Posted by simonpenson
Rand’s recent WBF about co-occurrence was a real wake up call for those still transfixed with link building practices of old. In its place are things like social signals, link age, and, most importantly, a growing reliance on relevancy and how that is deciphered.

Happy New Year. May all your content have lots of pageviews, links and comments!
New Photo. But old was much better :)
Always be testing ;)
Congrats on the rather successful year Cyrus, loved reading some of your stuff and looking forward to some informative 2014 posts!
Great compilation, Moz!
One thing I like about year-end reviews is that they provide a way to look at the big-picture trends -- what was popular or important in 2013 will likely be more important in 2014. Just some quick thoughts on the number-one posts in three of the categories above and what they may signify.
10 Tools for Creating Infographics and Visualizations -- By now, most everyone understands the value of content. But a lot of the time, "content" has consisted mainly of blog posts, white papers, and case studies -- or, in other words, the written word. However, I'd suggest that the popularity of this post signifies that visual content will become "king" in 2014 for a variety of reasons. As attention spans decline online, people want to information quickly -- and it's easier to consume an image than a long block of text. Visual content is easier to peruse on smartphones while "on the go." In a greater context, I imagine that this shows that websites will increasingly go more visual.
Most people have at least some ability to write, so it's usually been easier to produce text-based content. But I'd also suggest that the popularity of this post signifies concerns within the community over a lack of knowledge of how to produce expert visual content. We all learn how to write; fewer of us learn how to use design software at an expert level.
So, I guess the question for all of us is -- "How do we address this issue -- should all SEOs and marketers now learn and add professional design to our arsenals?" Another question: how do we optimize visual content and visual websites themselves so that search engines can crawl and index them? (Moz has a webinar with some insights: seomoz.org/webinars/designing-for-seo)
Holy Grail of eCommerce Conversion Optimization - 91 Point Checklist and Infographic
How to Rank: 25 Step SEO Master Blueprint
I'd tie these two together because they signify a larger trend (in my opinion) -- that could be termed "a consolidation of ideas" in the SEO industry.
Not that long ago, SEOs would argue about minutiae -- 3% or 5% keyword density? What percentage of backlinks should have exact-match anchor text? Today, I'd argue that a lot of those debates are going away because there is becoming a general acceptance of SEO best practices -- optimize a site primarily for crawling and indexing, create great content, and earn quality links. That's all. (Still, easier said then done.) It's probably one reason that people such as Jill Whalen have moved on. The popularity of documents such as the SEO Master Blueprint show that people recognize the existence of (and want an easy reference to) these general best-practices.
With that in mind, the popularity of the conversion optimization post may signify that as SEO practices are increasingly accepted and known even by non-SEOs, we then need to become experts in other areas. Your average website owner may already know how to install and use all of the attributes (in this simple example) of the Yoast Wordpress SEO plug-in. So, if this website is a client, what value would you add? I'd say in increasingly other areas such as conversion optimization.
Wow, this became quite long. In summary: I'd suggest that the popularity of these posts in 2013 mean that in 2014, we need to become more visual and experts in other areas besides SEO (which has really always been just a collection of best practices in various areas, anyway).
Looking forward to the posts that 2014 will bring!
Pretty happy that my post made it to the top YouMoz list :) Have a good New Year everyone!
Hey Matthew,
You deserve this; Your post is my favorite one in 2013. Best of luck and Happy New Year.

Way to go Steve! Love having you here man.

Thanks for compilation. For me personally the best posts of the year are: How to rank:25 step SEO master blueprint and A visual guide to keyword targeting and on-page optimization.I spent a week on each of them, reading post, linked posts, taking notes.Cyrus and Rand have the talent to put it in a very simple way, easy to understand.I hope you keep that in the next year.
Happy New Year to all.
Let the next year you get everything you want and you do not have, and keep all you have and love!
Top Ten in most active users? Cool :)
Yes I am here every day....
A continued reading list for me. Always looking for something to read from all of you and this will certainly keep me busy for a while. Thanks!! and congrats to all the amazing authors.
Good Collection of 2013. If any one looking for SEO Resources or want to lean SEO. They must read the above posts.
For the first time in years I am not in the top 10 of the commenters' chart... well, I was quite busy, so the time I had once simply wasn't there anymore.
But, hey... 33 thumbs up to a comment of mine is a sign this old Mozzer can kick ass still :-)
Surprisingly, i do not see Dr.Peter anywhere in these MozTops.... For me, the Top Post (an Eye Opener for those who totally rely on Google) was What Scares Google ? !! Besides him, Rand surely always comes up with the best for business !! Thumbs up for both !!
Actually Pete (after Rand and before Cyrus) is the most prolific writer of the core Moz Staff.
Actually I was imagining that his visual MegaSERP was going to enter in some of the top 10s
Exactly !! Just read the Visual MagaSERP article and yes, i second your thought !!
Cyrus Shepard is everywhere on that list. I guess that means we need to see more posts by him!
Maybe the first post by him in 2014 would be how he did it!
Thanks for the transparency. Curious about something I noticed here and how it correlates to the Moz user survey. People say they don't want "ultimate guide" style posts, but they get lots of social shares, traffic, links, comments and thumbs up. I wonder what other interesting coparisons can be made between what users say they want and what people actually respond to.
Good observation Dan. I believe there's an actual backlash against anything with "ultimate" in the title, because those posts usually aren't ultimate at anything.
On the other hand, a well written, researched, and insightful guide will almost always have a fair shot at success, no matter how it's titled.
Happy New Year Moz! May you continue to share more interesting content for you readers.
Wish you very Happy New Year 2014 Moz team, i LOVE THIS ALL AWESOME COLLECTION!
I was waiting too see this post and finally its live. Thanks to all contributors who contribute their best on Moz. I myself also try 2 times but not successful. But I still have hope to see myself in this list one day. :)
Well lookie there, I made one of the lists...thanks guys! I love this community and the content that continuously keeps coming out at such a high level. Thanks to everyone at Moz for working so hard to create a place that's very special on the Web. I am constantly trying to think of interesting topics to write about and share. You all have set the bar pretty high, and that's an awesome thing. Here's hoping I can produce more posts and comments worthy of sharing here. Happy New Year everyone!
Thanks for the kind words, Dana -- it's folks like you who make this community what it is. Thanks so much for your contributions, and happy New Year to you, too!
Well I will definitely have to post some more relevant comments this year so I can have a shot at the list in 2015. This comment is of course not one of those.

We're working on overarching strategies now, but in the meantime, you can get a pretty solid sense for what'll be influencing our decisions by checking out the takeaways at the bottom of this post. =)
Great idea, Mozzers! Really neat to see what pieces of content had the most unique pageviews and were the most popular. Surely my YouMoz post from November JUST missed the top 10 :).
