So you think you have Facebook all figured out. You have your fan page with a couple custom tabs set up, you've started an ad campaign and every one of your products on your site has the "like" button installed (which increases revenue). Easy peasy, this Facebook stuff is a cinch! Well you're right, it all is pretty easy to implement, but what else could you be doing? What other ways can you utilize Facebook (and its 500 million active users) to help market your company?
These four tactics we're talking about today aren't all new necessarily, but they're fairly new to me. Which got me thinking, if I didn't know about these (or why they were so great for inbound marketing) how many other people also don't know. I'm not trying to claim that if I don't know about it, no one does, because clearly there are people already using them. But the question is... are you? If not, could or should you be? Let's dig right in and take a look at these four Facebook marketing tactics you might not know about (but now you will).
1. Facebook Insights For Your Website
Yes, you read that right. Now, I'm sure you have all seen Insights for your fan pages, but did you know that you could get Facebook Insights for your website? This is a great way to get information about content people are sharing from your site, user demographics, likes and other goodies. We recently set this up and were quite surprised at how much data you could get. Here's a quick blurb straight from Facebook:
Facebook Insights for Domains offers a consolidated view of key metrics for any website, even those that have not implemented Facebook Platform. For example, if a user links to your site in their Facebook status message, that data is included in the analytics for your domain. You can access sharing metrics and demographic information per domain and per URL so you can optimize your content for sharing and better tailor your content to your audience.
First off, it's super easy to set up. Go to https://www.facebook.com/insights/ and click the green "Insights for your Website" button in the upper right hand corner. You'll get a pop up box like the one below, then you just simply add the meta tag inside the <head> tag of your site.
Once you have this in place, the next time you go to the Insights page, you'll not only see your fan pages, but you'll also see your website show up as an option. Below are a couple views of the data Facebook gives you about your site.
This view shows the organic shares of our content by days
This view shows the demographics on people who have liked our content. WHOA!

2. Facebook Comments
I'll be honest here, I was a big skeptical about why anyone would want to use Facebook comments... that is, until I saw it in action. Let me just walk you through my reaction the first time I posted a comment on TechCrunch which now uses Facebook comments.
1. This is cool, it looks like my comment will get posted to Facebook. Hmm, I wonder what that means really?
2. Cool! It means my comment showed up on my wall.
3. But wait... what? It also showed up in my friend's feed! This is what my boss, Jamie saw in his feed:
4. Within minutes, my boss and husband replied to my comment on Facebook. But not only did their replies show up on Facebook, they also showed up in the TechCrunch post. Whoa... imagine the possibilities!
What makes Facebook comments so great:
- Your comments get read by a lot more people.
Neither my boss or husband would have ever read that simple comment I made on TechCrunch. But because it showed up on Facebook, they saw it and replied right then and there. TechCrunch ended up with three comments which they would have only gotten one in a different commenting system. Hello UGC!
- Cuts out a lot of spam!
Facebook does all the work of figuring out if a real person is commenting or not. The person has to be logged in to Facebook in order to comment, so you don't get anonymous users. Obviously there are some drawbacks to this since not everyone has an account (the horror!), but you could offer multiple ways to comment like TechCrunch does.
- Simple comment moderation
Facebook makes moderation pretty darn easy. You have quick access to edit, ban and subscribe yourself to certain feeds.

3. Local Business Listings
If you're a small business owner or local business, you may have already noticed these random Facebook pages showing up for your company. These are pages automatically created by Facebook. Initially I was pretty annoyed by these, but then realized you could utilize them for your advantage. Let's take a look at an example of a bar in NYC.
Run a search for "billy marks west" and you'll see one of these pages in the SERPs
Ok so these pages can rank for your branded name, which could help you take over a SERP for your name. The crazy part though, is that Facebook lets anyone (yes... anyone) edit these pages.
Sure it's a little crazy that the edit button is open to everyone, but if you keep it on your radar and remember to check the page often, you can ensure the information doesn't get changed incorrectly.
Facebook is trying to get updated information about all types of locations, including cities. For example, when I went to the New York, New York Facebook City page, I got a pop-up asking me to edit it.
This page shows 3 of my friends have checked in at the MoMA
Which led me to the "community edit" page that asks me to add detail about New York City. Whoa... so I can add information about New York? Again, imagine the possibilities.
Of course, this could also lead to people adding incorrect information, trolling your company and many other negative things. But if you keep your local page up-to-date and keep track of the edits, you have yet another page in your marketing arsenal!
Additional Information:
Anyone have a good post about this I could link to? :)
4. Facepile
I'm going to be honest here, I sometimes just like to yell out "Facepile!" It's just a fun word to say. :) Ok, ok I'll get back on the subject at hand. You may not know the name for it, but I'm sure you've all seen something the image below before, right? Facepile is the plugin that displays photos of your friends (as long as you're logged into Facebook) who like the particular website you're on.
But have you thought about taking this one step further and adding Facepile to a conversion page? Just how much do you think your conversions could increase if users saw their friends smiling faces right before they signed up for or purchased something? Foursquare does a great job of this if you go to one of their location pages not logged in.
I went out looking for other great conversion pages that use Facepile and I ran across the MailChimp sign up page. Sadly there's a big huge "white space" area which could probably benefit from adding this feature. Here's a (horrible) mock-up of what it might look like if they added Facepile to that bare area.
Additional Information:
- Official Facebook Facepile developer page
- If you can find other great information about using Facepile, please let me know and I'll link to it
Now there you have it. Four Facebook marketing tactics you might not know about. For me it's always fun to find these "hidden" gems, especially when there right there staring you in the face. What other tactics do you use that may not be very well known?

Ooh... thanks for the Facebook Insights tip - I got that running in about 2 minutes and already have some interesting data.
I have mixed feelings about the Facebook comments for a number of reasons, but a big one is ownership. What happens when Facebook has all of my comments? Not only do I no longer have the data (I've heard you can download it), but Facebook could change the rules or introduce some clause and suddenly they might claim ownership of my comments. I'm really hesitant to take that step with a company who hasn't proven themselves trustworthy with other people's data.
The facebook insights tip is a real eye opener. I had no idea it evn existed, presumably Facebook have done little promotion of it?
I have heard you can "download" such data also. If you ever find out how please let us all know.
Under "Account" > "Account Settings", there's a "Download Your Information" button, and it seems to cover everything in one giant file. I'm not sure if it currently includes Facebook comments (as I don't have them enabled).
I have used them in the past and will likely never again. Although I didn't know about one of the features Jen mentioned - their high rate of failure amongst other things assures me that I will be looking elsewhere for a comment solution. *You can probably sense the bitterness huh...uhh.....*
Great post Jen. I will surely take advantage of Facebook Insights for Websites and the Facebook Comment.
The only doubt is that the FB Comments are actually iFramed, therefore not attributed to your page and therefore the UGC SEO benefits are lost... I know it is possible to give the two options (classic comment and FB comments), therefore I will give it a try and test it (maybe on the mozcation.com site).
Surely this integration is going to offer even more tools, as the recent "Recommend" button.
Thanks Gianluca! I'd love to hear about your tests. There are actually a number of drawbacks to FB comments that I forgot to mention. :( That being one of them.
And one of it is that it's not SE-friendly, though I found Facebook Insights for Websites quite interesting. Thanks Jennita!
I never even knew about facebook insights. :) Awesome!
Hello Jen,
This is a great post, to be honest I was well aware of facebook places but insight for a domain was seriously new to me and as I am an analytics lover this can be a great resource for me!
As far as face pile is concern this is great if you add this on your blog (side bar) my experiment says this helps increasing active fans who actually engage and respond to the activities happening on the facebook page.
I had a page that have almost 300 fans, I add the face pile widget on the blogs side bar and next time I update the blog and through it on social media the results were awesome more people were talking about the blog post, more likes and a dramatic natural increase of fans for the fan page.
Will surly going to use the facebook insight for domain now! Thank you for the this great stuff!
When I try to get insights, I see "No admin data found." after entering website url and name of page. Could you help me out, please?Â
I am having same problem with Facebook Insights. Any suggestions why?
Cheers
Shovan
i haven't found decision yet, and you?
Not really, still looking around
I'm actually not the biggest fan of using my Facebook account as my social login on other sites. I appreciate what it can do for both my Facebook page as well as the site I'm commenting on, but I don't always want my activity to be recorded on Facebook. I do it for some things, but sometimes I just prefer to keep my comments "in-house" so to speak.
So I innocently comment on a friends post on facebook, assuming its private, and that appears on another site? Im going to jail soon then...
Hm, altho I guess it must be tied to privacy setting in some way?
I'm really like the "like and send" buttons that Facebook have, the only problem that we have found is that it only lets you like a single page on the website. Which is not good! So we wrote our own like button that will enable a user to like, comment and post a url to their Facebook Stream. The awesome part is that it dynamically knows what page of our site that you were on when you clicked the like button.
This is the best way that we have been able to generate a buzz on Facebook.
If your interested the url is www.networxrecruitment.com
Simple. Practical. Succinct. My fav types of posts.
One word for you... FACEPILE!
Must...Love...Facebook...Great and new tips Jen - Thanks. So here is the million dollar questions: Facebook Comments or Disqus for an Ecommerce store?Bring it!Â
Wow, those were some fantastic tips and things I didn't know. Thanks again SEOmoz :)
I am agree with you. SEOmoz is really big source which gives us brand new information of SEO industry. That's why I love SEOmoz. What you think about it?
How is Anand's comment so much worse than Alex's that it gets thumbs down? Â Same content he just doesnt speak english as well.
If we are going to add our comment on any blog post & get too much thumbs down so we have to accept it. But, it is best learning process. We can understand human behavious. What does they like & dis like? If my comment will get thumbs down so I will take it positively & try my best to get some more thumbs up in next comment. Thanks for your comment.
Very usefull Post. Will be a Nice Updated information for all Social Media Optimizers reading this.. Well, I'm one SMO! Thanks jennita..
I have to confess when you introduced this post with 4 things people might not know, I was thinking, pssh, I'm know Facebook... but these were all new to me, thanks!
I'm actually a little hesitant about the fact that internally commenting on a friend's external comment shows up on the external page... it's a little shifty of Facebook because everything else you write on a friend's wall is only visible to their friends, and if you haven't read this post you might have no idea that thousands of other people could be reading your comment...
Wow, I can't believe that I didn't know you can add Facebook Insights to your domain! There should be an obvious link from your fan page :/ Anyway, great tips so thanks Jennita! - Jenni
Has anyone found any Wordpress plugins that they would recommend the implement Facebook comments? I am in a great niche for this, and I would love to get it implemented... preferably one that integrates with the Wordpress database....
Thanks a ton for the insights for domain tip!
There are already a bunch of plugins that handle this just search for 'facebook comments' from the 'add plugins' screen in your Wordpress admin area, or visit:Â
https://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/search.php?q=facebook+comments
Was looking more for a recommendation because there were so many!
Same! If you find one specific one that works well please post back and share. I'd love to know too. :)
I have tested 3-4 wordpress facebook comment plugins and all seem to have problems. has anyone got a recommendation?
Good tactics, I have seen more and more sites using the facebook comments box it provides great interaction with your visitors and really does drive extra attention to your brand.
I think it really works well on deals websites where people want to go on a group trip or a group night out when they post on the deal then it filters over to Facebook.
But yeah the Facebook insights have really lifted their game too I remember the days when it was soo basic and limited every time I log in now they seem to have cool new add ons and cool new features.
Yeah you gotta love the add-ons and how Facebook keeps changing and getting better and better. Goes to show how influential Facebook is and how important it is for businesses to keep track of everything.
Hi Jen,I dislike (the irony) the Facebook Comment feature exactly because it shows up on my wall.I think a lot of people refrain from leaving comments (if there is no alternative to Facebook sign in) for that reason- sometimes it's just too much information :p
haha that's funny. :) The thing is, people can uncheck the "post to facebook" checkbox so that it doesn't show up there as well. But if most people are as lazy as I am, they just leave it checked. :)
Great Tips. Very insightful. But I wanted to ask you about facebook fans. Buying facebook fans in particular. I found a few sites out there that I have been visiting for a while. Check them out. https://www.holidayhypermarket.co.uk and https://www.cheapholidays.com/. These two strange sites from with in a matter of weeks have accumilated over 20000 facebook fans from having only a 100 or so. How did they do this so fast? I hate to say it but I think they are buying facebook fans. After having checked the facebook page I noticed that even with that many fans hardly any were engaging in discussions. The people who were happened to be former employees. Now Im not sure what they are doing to be honest but its all too strange. There content is not even that good. Please let me know if any of you have any thoughts on the tricks they are using please. when you look at there blog there are no facebook likes either on there blog artilces
Great article! Seems like using Facebook is also a lot of trial and error, but once you find the perfect way to use it, it'll incredibly beneficial.
Great article! Seems like using Facebook is also a lot of trial and error, but once you learn the ins and outs, it's an incredibly beneficial tool.
Like Frederik above, I too would like to know a little bit more about Disqus and how the Facebook implementation compares to just plainly using the Facebook Commenting system.
Does anyone have any insight?
Great post Jen.
Awesome article, great writer!
So, for FB Insights for a domain: Do you have to have a Like or Send button - or some other FB social plugin - installed on the domain in order for Insights to record data on user activity on that webpage, like visits?
Also, I had an awful time adding Insights for Domain to our site. I kept getting the "no admin data for domain" error. The problem was that our "root" domain is now a subfolder (/home/..), so the FB crawler, or whatever it is couldn't find the meta tag data in the /home folder. We were 301ing the root to the /home directory, so I guess that was why. So, in order to get it to work, we had to disable the 301s from the root directory index.html, php, asp files, etc. Then add the metadata to the index.html that was in the root, and then verify. Then it worked.
Of course, we had to go back and put everything back like it was before adding the Insights meta tag, lol. But at least now we didn't get the "no admin data for this domain" error, and the Insights dashboard is now populated properly.
It'll be interesting to see whether the stats ever move off zero, though, since we've reinstated that 301 from root to subfolder. Any thoughts on this, Jenn?
i don´t like the idea of fb insight for a website so much. do you think fb will deal with these informations trustworthy?
Marketing on FAcebook at these ways is really fantastic. I really unknown from these tactics. You have such briliant ideas. Everyone would like to follow these. Facebook is such blessing for both social media and promoting your brands.

Great tips.
Hi everyone! There was a post just published in YOUmoz that talks about how to make Facebook Comments indexable: Make Facebook Comments Box Indexable by Search Engines. We've gotten a lot of questions about this, so this might be something to try.
Thanks!
Just got around to implement Facebook comments on my blog. I wasted an hour until I figured one bug, if you have a social plugin for WordPress that uses Facebook Share based on an older script, those two will fight each other and Facebook comments won't work. So try to update your social plugins before you add Facebook comments. Next step, making them indexable :)
great post! this is a great set of list. these could really help me a lot. thanks for sharing your post. hope to hear more posts from you soon.Â
Facebook's info about claiming Places:https://www.facebook.com/help/new/?page=1154
For people interested in Facebook demographics:Â
by default it gives demographics about likers,Â
with the pulldown you can switch to 'like button impressions' demographics.
These (sub)groups of people can have important differences.
Great articl Jennita, very informative. Personally I've had terrible trouble trying to activate facebook comments on to my blog, it kept clashing with other plugins - I eventually got it working but now it's gone again! Wish I was more of a techie sometimes!: )
The virality of Facebook comments is INCREDIBLY powerful. It's quite hard to implement them and retain the SEO benefit of comments though, we're still working on that one...
Awesome article, thank you!
Here's my Facebook marketing confusion:
The insights for my page under "Total Tab Views" says that XX number of people viewed "Events" and X number of people viewed "Events | events." However, the event tab is not enabled for my page, and I have no idea why Facebook would think there are 2 (they have different visitor numbers). Any ideas?
Great post! Facebook has become so powerful so fast and it just keeps getting better especially now that Grandpa, Grandma are even on board. The stereotype of Facebok being exclusively a college thing is long gone. Who would have thought it would provide for a whole new world of online marketing. Just keeps getting better and better!
A really cool article. Only one thing, the face pile has been around for some time :P :PÂ
I wanted to share with you another resource on this, a Facebook marketing easy to follow guide:Â
Facebook Marketing Guide and Best Practices
Nice tips, thanks!
I just now integrated Facebook comments through several of my properties. I can't believe how easy it is to snap it into a page. The challenge for me was doing it at 2 AM and needing to remember each of the referring URL strings, so easy to copy/paste and forget. :)
woooow, amazing! thank you. i especially like no.2 tactic. it all looks great. thank you again.
Not only facebook, we have twitter for promoting brands as well as networking. All we need to do is maintain the network and continuously keep networking or posting.
what happens to the old comments, if i implement the facebook comment function to a blog? will they be gone forever or is there any possibility to keep them somehow?
and nobody answered, if facebook deals with the insight datas trustworthy. :(
Really interesting to see those analytics. Avg. time on page is 48 sec. while realistically there's about 10 min. of reading material - easy. It shows how often people just scan pages (even though the value of this content is immense).
Quoted from Facebook: "The plugin is available either via a simple iframe you can drop into your page, or if you are using the new JavaScript SDK, you can use the <fb:facepile> XFBML tag" - Does this mean that if you implement this somehow using the JavaScript SDK & XFBML tag that the content will be counted on website instead of iframed? Not a programmer, so looking for help. Great article, thanks!
I'm trying to add Insights for my site and I get an error for "Bad Request:Â No admin data found." What's the error there? Anyone know? The meta tag is showing up in page source as expected. Also, is it better to link that tag to my personal account or my page?
The Facebook insights for websites functionality is nuts, a real hidden gem, can't beleive I hadn't come across it earlier! I'm also experiementing with using FB comments on a new site, seems like a good way to increase FB exposure / followers / referrals.
SEOMoz does it again! Killer post Jennita.Â
These tools demonstrate the power (of the dark side! jk) of social linking and the direction of search personalization.Â
So much to do, so lil time.
Whilst I won't dispute the potential of facebook in certain verticals, I feel there are still some things that FB really need to address. The continual changing of code and implementation across many of their apps and plugins certain tools creating seriously amateur errors (the ?fb_xd_fragment= issue with like/send buttons has been known for well over a year and yet never dealt with)
Finally! A blog post about Facebook that is actually useful! Definitely going to give Facebook comments a go on my site. I've been pondering on the idea for some time, but this has really persuaded me to try it
Tom
I wonder what Facebook is doing with all the information it gathers through website insights?
Selling it to the highest bidder
excellent information! thank you!
You know, I think there is one thing you glossed over that is worth mentioning.
I think that Facebook succeeded when places like friendster didn't, because the UI was so much cleaner / better. Facebook's analytics tool, as well as ad tool, has a far superior interface to Google's. It's cleaner, faster, easier on the eyes, etc...
my two cents.
I much prefer Google Analytics, Facebook Insights is good for people who want a brief overview, but there's not enough information there to make it a viable commercial tool. To be honest though, Google Analytics doesn't really provide enough information either for my liking. - Jenni
Good post Jen. Facebook insights shows some interesting data about your fans and you will be happy to use it as a first time user. But soon you will understand its limitations:
1) It shows data only about your fans. What about non-fans?
2) Only domain/Page administrators & application owners can view Insights data. What about others?
3) You can only run limited Javascript on a facebook fan page and this makes it hard to put any tracking code.
Now the multi million pounds question. How to overcome all these limitations and get powerful analytical insight of your fan pages like getting all the powerful reporting features of Google Analytics. The answer is find a way to setup Google Analytics to your facebook fan page. Now instead of repeating the whole process i would highly recommend you to read this awesome post. It one of the best analytics post i have read so far. Click here to checkout this aweomse post
On a side note if you are familar with the powerful analytical insight provided by Post Rank Analytics tool, you would love to integrate facebook with your postrank account. Through this integration you can gain another insight on who commented & liked your content on Facebook. You can also automate the publishing of your RSS content to a Facebook Wall or Fan page. If you are always on a move like me, you can setup your mobile phone to post status updates or send photos/videos straight to your Page. The facebook insight API developers can Developers can access the insight data using the Facebook Query Language (FQL).
Insights does show some numbers/activity from non-fans, but obviously there's not as much detail as in GA. - Jenni
Great article Jen, we're just working on our first Facebook page so these tips are going to be a big help. One thing we're experimenting with is trying to put something out in each media channel, so regular photos, videos and text updates. Fingers crossed it'll make things more interesting for the fans.
I have to admit that I am a bit dumb when it comes to Facebook, but that is simply because of the fact that I haven't been giving it too much thought or payed attention to the most important details, I focused on Twitter and it works for me. But reading your post it is hard not to become inspired and at least try out your tips and see how it goes. So thanks for giving us a head up and wish me luck :)
Hi Jennita! Â Great points - thanks for sharing such helpful info ... I know this is all about Facebook, one thing I wanted to add since you mentioned Google Local Listings that it is possible to edit, enhance and improve one's company page. Â It is easy to do and you can create your listing or claim it if you are the business owner here.
~carpediembabs~
Is there any type of website you wouldn't recommend having social on?Â
We have a Twitter and Facebook account set up - and I think they are great tools independently.
We are a retail outfit and the only thing people could share is things like promo codes to use online, and to use SN to get in touch with us.
I'd almost love to just go to a website without a 'share' element on now!
I was thinking in the past to implement the Facebook comments, but haven't really decided. The idea that people write on my webpage, but the content goes to another website just seems like a waste for my SEO. All the great content gets ignored, because it is Iframed... On the other hand I hate it, that I have people commenting on my FB page on the post, and others on my website, and those comments are not together on one place.
For now I can't really decide to do this. For the SPAM argument, akismet does a great job and I don't need to think about spam at all...
great article, I didn't know that you can get insights for Facebook for your website.
I am wondering how long Google will keep showing your facebook local listing in the SERPs, probably not too long!
Great post, Thank you Jen.
Especialy the part that you can use Facepile for conversions in your site.
Irina
Thanks Jen
I loved the tip on local business listing but i"ve not seen the 'edit' button for these yet. Maybe different in the UK. I will keep an eye on this.
I'm curious about this too. I know that when I am on a FB Page, I am able to click on the Info tab, and just above the Bing map, click on the Edit link to add info about the location and other details.
Cheers!
What a helpful post! I'm off to do more reading about Facebook comments. On one of my sites I have a blog, but I also have articles on static pages that I would love to allow people to comment on. I think I'll try the Facebook comments there and see how things go!
Awesome. I was unaware of two of these that directly apply to a past project.
Thanks.
Thanks for this article, Jen!Â
I feel a little silly in not realizing that Facebook had insights for your website. Like others here, I felt well versed at FB for business, but little did I know...Thanks for the breakdown.Â
I love FB comments. My site is not a blog, but I do offer the ability for users to share content on pages. Now with the comments feature I can get even more interaction. Just having the ability to comment I feel adds a credibility to my site.Â
Love the post Jen, but you forgot...
I'm just kidding. This is great. Facebook Insights can be incredibly useful for driving traffic to your site.
I was lucky enough to be at Boston ProSEO where Mat Clayton talked about the FB meta tags, and he showed some very impressive improved stats for his site, MixCloud.
If you're an all-around search marketer, I recommend getting a copy of his slides (beg, borrow, buy, or steal) and reviewing them. He offers some real winner insights into what to use and what is a waste of time. Also, buy the video recording of his talk, because you will get much more out of it by hearing his explanations!
I am less sure about Facepile, but could see it being useful as well for building trust. It could become the new "trust logo" for social.
Keep it up!
It is a great post as SEOMoz have always. I am going to implement these suggestions..... Thank you Jennifer
That's why I love SEOmoz so much!
You provide us with "simple to use" and with advanced tips. It's just that mixtures that makes it great!
Thank's!
These are really good ideas. I'm going to use some of these on my company site. Thanks!!!
Thank you for a great post! This is really some useful information. I didn't know about using Facebook Insights in that way. I can't wait to get that up and running and see what kinds of things I can learn. :)
There are some awesome suggestions here! I use a few of them to help build credibility with my new website visitors. If I have 10,000 people who like my products and display that information right on my product pages, chances of selling them to new comers definitely increase. I think many people refer to this as Social Proof.
So the question is... when is moz going to move to the Facebook Comment system?

Facebook Comments truly is great! Any plans to implement it on the SEOmoz site?
Interesting post. I was wondering how effective buying Facebook Ads are for local businesses. Say a retailer had a sale this weekend, would purchasing a facebook ad to promote that sale be worth it? Is there an analytics example I can check out?
Thanks.
These are awesome tips. Â Thanks so much Jennifer, especially the ability to dive into the Analytics.
I find it rare to read an SEO or Social Media article that contains information that I never even considered. Excellent job and thank you.
is that another way to beat google :p
BTW Jenni you are doing a great job and i am always love to follow you :). Facebook is the only place, where just click and win
