If you know me, you know I'm hyper-critical of the software, data, and products Moz releases. My usual response to someone asking about our tools vs. others used to be to give a rundown of the things I like about the competition and why they're great, then look down at ground, shuffle my feet in embarrassment, and say "and Moz also has a good tool for that."
But Keyword Explorer (and the progress Moz Pro & Local have made this year) brings out a different behavior in me. I'm still a little embarrassed to admit it, but admit it I must. KW Explorer is the best keyword research tool in the market, period*.
But we are never satisfied, so today, it's getting even better with the addition of some killer new functionality.
#1: Rank checking inside KW Explorer lists
First on the list is the ability to easily see whether a given domain (or URL) already ranks on page 1 for any of the keywords on a list. Just enter a domain or page, hit "check rankings," and the Rank column will fill in with your data.
Why is this crucial?
Because many of us who do keyword research need to know whether to add a list of keywords to our "already visible/getting traffic" set, or to the "in need of content creation or optimization" set. This feature makes it simple to build up a multi-hundred keyword list for targeting, and quickly include or exclude the keywords for which we're already ranking page 1 (or above/below any given position). This column now appears in the CSV export, too, so you can mash up and filter the data however you'd like.
Quick aside: If you have a keyword list with expired SERPs (after 14 days, KW Explorer assumes that Google's results may have changed substantially enough to invalidate the prior Difficulty & Organic CTR scores), you'll get this experience when checking rankings. Just refresh the keywords on the list to fetch the latest SERPs and you'll be good to go.
But, of course, there's also the need to get more ranking data — the ranking positions beyond page 1, tracking over time, comparison to competitors, etc. And that's why, we've also added...
#2: Send keywords directly from a list to Pro Campaigns for rank tracking
Undoubtedly, our most-requested feature of the summer was the ability to import a list (or selected keywords from a list) over to a campaign to track. The previous export/import system worked, but it was an unnecessary hassle. Today, you can simply use the "I want to" menu, choose "Add XYZ to Campaign," and then select which campaign you want (or create a new one).
The keywords will auto-magically copy themselves into your campaign, using whatever default settings you've got for rank tracking (US-English, Google.com is most common, but you can rank track in any country or language).
Why is this crucial?
Because once you know the keywords you're targeting, you need to know how you're performing over time, how your competition's doing on those terms/phrases, and how the rankings are changing to include or exclude various SERP features (yup, as of August, we also track all the SERP features in Pro Campaigns).
The challenge, of course, is that you've got to know which keywords are worth targeting in the first place, and how relatively important they are, which is why we've worked like mad to deliver...
#3: Better, more accurate keyword volume and coverage than ever
(that's way, way frickin' better than whatever Google AdWords is doing with their "low spending" accounts)
Russ Jones and the Keyword Explorer team have been going full-force on a new, more powerful solution to replacing Google AdWords's weird, imprecise, always-30-days-or-more-behind keyword data with better information. We started working with clickstream data (searches and click patterns gathered from browser extensions, anonymized, and sold to us by various folks) early this year; Russ wrote a detailed account of the process here.
But now our volume numbers are even better, with the addition of dramatically more data via a partnership with the awesome crew at Jumpshot. Their clickstream-based search behavior, plus what we get from other sources, combined with our modeling against AdWords' impression counts on real campaigns, gives us higher accuracy, more coverage, and faster recognition of volume trends than ever before.
Why is this crucial?
When you enter a term or phrase into Keyword Explorer, you can now expect that we're providing the best, most accurate volume ranges available*. Marketers need to be able to trust the numbers in their keyword tools, or else risk prioritizing the wrong search terms, the wrong content, and the wrong investments. We have confidence, thanks to our test comparisons, that the volume ranges you see in KW Explorer's ranges will match real volume for the prior 30 days 95%+ of the time.
In the months ahead, Russ will have more to share comparing Moz's keyword volume data to AdWords' and, hopefully, an external API for search volume, too (especially after all the resounding requests on Twitter).
If that wasn't enough, we've also added volume numbers to Pro Campaigns, so you can see this high-quality information in the context of the keywords you're tracking.
Not too shabby, eh?
Let's get real. Moz had a number of years where getting one change to one product, even a small one, felt like pulling teeth. It took forever. I think you could rightly point at our software and say "What's going on over there?" But those days are long gone. Just look at all the useful, quality updates in 2016. This team is firing. on. every. cylinder. If you work on Moz's software, you should be proud. If you use our software, you can feel like you're getting your money's worth and more. And if, like me, you tie far too much of your self-worth to the quality of your company's products, well, even you can start holding your head high.
Rock on, fellow Mozzers and Moz subscribers. Rock on.
* In the English-language market, that is; outside of the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, and Australia (where we get Jumpshot and other clickstream data), the suggestions aren't as comprehensive and the volume numbers are often missing. Sadly, it'll probably be this way for a while as we're focusing on English markets for the time being, and will need to find and make deals with clickstream providers in each country/language in order to match up.
That is amazing.
Lately we have been struggling with the lack of accurate data from Google.
I even had to develop my own system to rank the keywords, very time consuming, by checking the SERP for each keyword manually.
Absolutely grateful for your effort.
Adore the tagline "Exposing the Keywords and Metrics Others Try to Hide"!
Ha! That's awesome!
The 'add to pro' I was hoping would be coming, really glad it's here :D
The SERP position feature - Hadn't even thought of that! Cool beans! Really like this, adds a whole new opportunity for discovering keywords you rank 'ok' for but are sub p1, are just a little under-optimised, and could benefit from a bit of extra sparkle.
Love the inclusion of volume data in Pro reports too.
Really impressed Rand! Great release :)
Thanks Mike :-) A lot of the upgrades come specifically from requests we get through people using the tool, so keep 'em coming! If there's something you want to see in there, it's a good chance that we can actually do it. Next up (hush hush), keyword suggestions based on a URL or domain you enter,
Oooo nice, look forward to that next one! Good for own/client domains, plus wouldn't hurt to include a quick cheeky check using that feature, in competitor research workflows :)
Okay, couldn't resist... just had a quick play :-D
I love the fact you can hover over the 'i' and see which specific URL on the domain is ranking! - One idea, how about clicking on the 'i' to open that URL is OSE? Handy & quick way to check backlinks and start to dig into the URL's metrics :)
Weird, I didn't know we planned to upgrade Serpstat this month :D
I feel like I'm going to get banned now...
Seriously though, great work on getting the search volumes. It's what we're all looking for at the moment.
But upgrade #1 is my favorite, that is an outstanding idea!!!
Lol :-)
Hi Rand,
It's a welcome change, I am really hopeful it would help us all. I am also happy to know that you are helping us to keep up with the fast changing pace of the SEO.
Regards,
Vijay
"* In the English-language market, that is; outside of the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, and Australia (where we get Jumpshot and other clickstream data), the suggestions aren't as comprehensive and the volume numbers are often missing. "
Still a lot of volume data missing for the UK market too. Shame as there's a real need for a viable alternative to the Adwords keyword planner.
I have found that with my UK clients if I use the "Estimated Search Traffic by Keyword" in the reports section I can do real research on terms that matter to my clients. For example I have a recruiter client in Doncaster and he wants to rank for terms in that industry. Some of the KWP terms say no data, but they get picked up in the Estimated Search Traffic by Keyword section of the reports so I can see traffic is going to the site for those keywords and the correlating rank, despite their being no data. It isn't a perfect fix but it gives a broader picture and some very relevant data for your clients. I also compare the "Tracked Keywords Compared to Competitors" to see if competition may be moving up or down on a term, I know this doesn't correlate to traffic but if I see a competitor suddenly going after a certain term chances are it is because it is working. Again, not perfect but when you look at them all side by side you can do some very targeted research. My client gave me 300 terms to research and we identified 20 to begin going after aggressively, some say "no data" but when you look at the other metrics we are sure that these terms are indeed getting searched. Cheers!
Thanks Rhiannon, really useful (and a smart approach). We were trialling Moz Pro but cut the cord on the basis of the gaps in the volume data. Hopefully, it'll improve and we'll look at it again in the future.
Thank you! I would watch their updates, I was very pleased with all the updates that came out over the summer. I also checked the search traffic coming in to the sites and even the ones in the UK, half of them often times still use the en-US, so getting the US data may still be of benefit. I was quite surprised at how high the volume of traffic was geo-located in the UK but using the US engines. It appears to be on the downward trend, but still found it interesting.
Wonderful!
The 'add to star' I was trusting would come, truly happy it's here :D
The SERP position highlight - Hadn't thought about that! Cool beans! Truly like this, includes a radical new open door for finding catchphrases you rank "alright" for however are sub p1, are only somewhat under-streamlined, and could profit by a touch of additional radiance.
Cherish the consideration of volume information in Pro reports as well.
Truly inspired Rand! Incredible discharge :)
thats great! is indeed one of the best tool that I saw until now! One extra future that will make this tool one of a kind, will be the option to see for which keywords is ranking a competitive website like on semrush tool!
Totally agree we need to get a large corpus of SERPs tracked over time so competitive keyword data is visible. For now, we actually do know what URLs/domains rank for similar terms, which you can see via the suggestions types (choose "related to keywords with similar results pages"). It's not everything you're seeking/comparable to SEMRush, but can give some great keyword ideas.
thanks for the tip! I need to work more on the tool to learn it better :)
i always looking after this kind of updates. Thanks
Thanks for sharing keep sharing
Nice changes. The volume trends being more accurate is something that will greatly improve the way we deal with keywords. No more guessing around about the traffic :) Yay
The Rank Checking is very helpful to just within Moz. Prior to this I was using the Search Analytics report within Search Console, which yields too many (but less relevant) results. Thanks!
where is the page that shows the table 1 in the blog? My keyword tracker page doesn't show the difficulty or the volume, just the rank? please provide exact url. thanks
Nice article.
I have been growing my keyword research right along with these updates. I started in June, and each month I felt like there were new things I had missed the month before, now going through your update list I realize I was just in the right place at the right time. It has improved my KWR game ten fold this summer. I have converted my team away from using Google Adwords now, and taught them all how to use the KWR tool by Moz. I passed out the box of swag you guys sent me back in June when I returned to the Thai office. Thank you again for that!!! Bribery always makes changes easier to cope with!!! Keep up the great work, Rand keep that head held high, you have earned it.
Awesome news Rand & Moz Team! If this team keeps pumping out improvements to the tool, there's no way it won't be a key tool in every marketer's arsenal.
These days KWE is a main part of my keyword research process. I've stopped using Google's keyword tool, because of the "low spend" limits you mentioned in the post, but also because it doesn't return as relevant results. I'm using a combination of SERPwoo, Moz KWE, and SEMrush to understand both useful topics to target and what competitors are currently competing on. If there are known overlaps in these tools, i'd love to hear how to focus on using fewer pieces of software in my process. Let me know what you think about that stack (both community and Mozzers).
Every IT professional know about Rand!! You are awesome and convey always new things. New upgrades create sound good but please compare it with Google ad-words and publish an article "how keyword explorer different from google adwords" because it will help to understand real difference which bigenner could not understand easily.
Howdy Rand,
As always, I am thoroughly impressed with you and the rest of the Moz team. I am a young SEO who has had the pleasure of "growing up" on the Moz tool set, and I couldn't be more satisfied. I love the idea of being able to quickly search for how my site is ranking in bulk for a keyword list. That will save me a lot of time and effort going forward. Thank you for continuing to provide a ton of value for strategists like me, and I would have to agree that Moz's keyword tool is hands down the best i've seen on the market!
Look nice, Keyword planner not free now
Really exciting to see these new updates showing up! We are continuously using the tool. An extra feature that I would love, would be the addition of more featured snippet data in the keyword explorer. It would be great to see the data per keyword.
Great app, now that google adwords took away some info
Were loving Keyword Explorer and all the updates coming through on Moz in 2016. We regularly audit our software providers and test new options so its great to use systems that keep fresh, useful and innovative.
Fantastico did not know the tool. If he knew open site explorer explorer but not keyword. I begin to use
I'm always looking forward to new updates :)
