With “content marketing” being the indisputable SEO buzzword of 2012, we can expect 2013 to see an onslaught of marketers trying to build links with guest posts. The growth in this market will cause some sites to lower their guest posting standards, others to raise them, and still more to stop accepting them altogether. Google will target low quality guest posts with increasing zeal, and it will get harder to see results if the effort and strategy aren't there. We're going to help you combat this by sharing how we got posts up on ProBlogger and Search Engine Journal, and by introducing you to our strategy for success with our clients.
1. Finding Guest Post Opportunities
Let's kick this off by talking about where to seek out guest post opportunities. This is, by far, the most important part of your strategy, since it determines the value and longevity of your link.
20 Things You Should Do and Pay Attention to
- Look for platforms where it will make sense to readers for you to post. The niche doesn't have to be identical, but there should be an overlap in audience, and you should be able to offer something valuable to them that also makes sense from a branding perspective.
- Check the SEOmoz Domain Authority and PageRank to make sure the blog has the right ranking factors in place. Dig a bit deeper than this, though. For starters, check up on a few of their previous guest posts to see how strong the Page Authority is. Look for other signs that the site is visited frequently, such as frequent comments and sharing activity. Make sure this is true for most pages, not just the homepage.
- On that note, check for activity on Facebook, Twitter, and Google+. If the site has a decent amount of community activity happening on at least one of those networks, you're in pretty good shape.
- Look for a large subscriber count.
- Read through a few of the comments to get an idea of what the site's community looks like, and to make sure spam isn't making its way into the comments frequently. Keep in mind that Google pays attention to user generated content, even if it doesn't count it the same way as main body content.
- Pay attention to who has contributed to the blog in the past. Do their guest posts or their sites seem “spammy?”
- Who is in charge of the blog? What does their background look like? Do they appear reputable?
- The guidelines for guest posts should have fairly strict standards. It should be clear that content is only accepted if it will please the blog's audience. If it looks “easy” to get a post up on their blog, don't bother.
- How frequently is the blog updated?
- Does the site publish any of its own material, or just guest posts? Most legitimate sites will publish their own material, though there are exceptions.
- Is it possible for you to become a regular contributor? A site that is looking for consistently good content will often want regular contributors. A site that doesn't care about quality standards is less likely to want them.
- Will your target audience visit this blog? Will influencers who are followed by your target audience visit this blog? You should be able to answer yes to at least one of these, unless the audience size is very large.
- Consider starting by asking this question: “Where is the go-to place for my target audience? Is it possible for me to get a post there?” instead of asking the more typical question posed earlier: “Would my target audience visit this blog?” This is harder to accomplish, but the results are much more dramatic if you do.
- Check out the site's link profile. Does it look natural?
- Seek out guest posts from blogs that do not publicly state an interest in guest posts. These are very lucrative, because very few of your competitors will have links like this.
- Try to write a post about the keyword that the site ranks best for. This increases the odds of your guest post showing up in the search results, reaching a wider audience, and sending over more referral traffic. Keep in mind that, in order to accomplish this, you will need to have something new and interesting to say about the topic that the site hasn't published before.
- Pay attention to the user interface and the overall user experience visitors have when they come to the site. These can increasingly be considered ranking factors, and they are an indication of the faith and resources invested in the site.
- Bonus points if the blog has received any kind of award from a reputable organization.
- Try starting with resource lists along the lines of: “Top 10 Blogs about [Niche]” These will point you toward reputable blogs in the industry.
- If the top ten blogs are unattainable, look for blogs that have been featured on those top ten sites.
20 Things You Should Avoid
Your choices for guest posting opportunities are ridiculously numerous, and you will waste resources if you pursue guest posts from sub-par blogs. Future updates will inevitably rob these links of their value. That's why we don't recommend:
- Blogs that accept all content sent their way with the obvious goal of publishing as much content as quickly as possible.
- Blogs that have no clear target audience or subject matter. Even all-subject sites like The New York Times have an understanding of what their audience looks like and write accordingly. Any blog that has no idea what its audience wants should be avoided.
- Sites with excessive ads. This hurts user experience and is generally a sign of a low quality site.
- If your target audience has a geographic component, don't seek out guest posts with a different geographic target, unless it is of exceptional value.
- Avoid sites that don't post any of their own content, or rarely do. There are rare exceptions, such as Cracked, where most of the content is produced by guests, and the quality is exceptionally high. These are few and far between.
- Sites with poor design, confusing structure, a bad interface, or that offer a poor experience to their visitors.
- Sites with no contact information.
- In general, avoid sites with no social media presence. Exceptions can be made if the site clearly has a large following. There are some bloggers, for example, who are opposed to social networks or who don't want to waste time on them, but have nevertheless developed a large audience.
- Sites with a low PageRank and SEOmoz Domain Authority should typically be avoided. (A domain authority below 30 can generally be considered avoidable). Clearly, you should make exceptions for sites that have a large following regardless of these metrics, because they will almost inevitably gain positive signals in the future.
- Blogs that have fake followers on social networks. Check through a few profiles and you can usually identify whether they are human rather quickly.
- Blogs with guest post guidelines that are easy to meet with minimal effort.
- Blogs whose posts are uninteresting, not actionable, uninformed, or out of date.
- Any blog that has posted duplicate content, unless of course it was somebody else who copied them.
- Sites that have already been penalized. Always check to make sure that the blog ranks for its own brand name and other things it should clearly rank for, in order to ensure that it hasn't been penalized.
- Blogs that do not get updated regularly.
- Blogs that exist to earn ad revenue off of guest posts alone.
- Sites with exact match domains. There are nuances to this, of course. In general, though, you should stick to domains built around brands, not keywords.
- A blog that doesn't appear to receive any comments, tweets, likes, or any of the above should typically be avoided.
- Sites that allow visitors to post an article directly without approval from humans. These should always be avoided.
- Blogs that take months before posting your submission. In general, if a site is taking months to publish posts it means they don't care about fresh content. There are some exceptions for very popular sites. However, a popular with high standards will generally tighten its standards even more or increase its posting schedule, rather than setting posts months in the future. In general, it shouldn't take more than a month or so for your post to go live.
Where to Find Places to Guest Post
For starters, you can use the following services to find places that accept guest posts:
- MyBlogGuest
- GuestBlogIt
- BloggerLinkUp
- BlogSynergy
- Guest Blog Genius
- Guestr
- BlogDash
- PostJoint
- Copy for Bylines
- Guest Blogging Websites
- Fizz Niche
- Technorati's directory of blogs
- Alltop
- Google Blogsearch
- Best of the Web Blogs
- On Top List blog directory
At the bottom of this post, we will also share a list of keywords to search for in order to find guest post opportunities. It's very long, so we won't distract you with it here.
Now, even though we've provided you with a lot of resources to work with here, we would actually suggest not relying too heavily on them. As guest posting increases in popularity, we can expect many of these tools to get abused. It's more important than ever to stand out, and if all of your links are coming from places like this, you won't be standing out.
We can't stress this enough. You need a unique link profile, and the key to that is going to be outreach. Make sure to spend a fair amount of time reaching out to blogs that don't go out of their way to get guest contributors, or ideally, who have never had a guest author before. These links are very lucrative and give your link profile the diversity it needs to survive future Google updates.
Here are some more unique places to get guest post ideas:
- Do a search for broad industry keywords and find the most popular blogs
-
From the Google menu, click “More” and select “Blogs,” then do a search for broad industry keywords
-
From the Google menu, click “Discussions” and search for your keyword, and see what sites are getting talked about the most in the forum community
- Search for your keywords on Twitter, Facebook, Reddit, Google+, and the like to find the most popular accounts that are associated with blogs
- Search for “top ten [keyword] blogs” and use similar queries to find popular blogs
Don't include keywords like “submit guest post” when you use these methods, at least not every time. The goal is to find popular blogs that don't typically accept guest posts. Be resourceful and do some relationship building. It's worth the effort.
2. Developing an Outside-the-Box Guest Post Idea
Depending on where you guest post, sometimes the idea will come before the outreach, and sometimes it will come after. Either way, it takes truly original ideas in order to get guest posts up on sites with high standards. This is crucial not just for getting your posts on authoritative sites, but for getting them shared, getting conversions, getting additional links, and getting traffic.
Generally, prerequisites for original ideas include:
- Reading the top blogs in the industry
- Setting up Google alerts for your main keywords
- The involvement of your client for insight into the industry
- Using Google Analytics, keyword tools, Google Insights and Trends, etc, to see what topics are popular in the industry
- Use tools to find out what is trending
However, these are not the keys to producing truly original content. They merely set the bar. In order to produce something fresh and new, you will need to:
- Use your client's proprietary data
- Take a stance that goes against the grain a bit
- Bring in insights from other disciplines and industries
- StumbleUpon insider information
- Spot relationships between subject matter that others haven't
- Be funny, emotional, and opinionated
- Use anecdotes, examples, or case studies
- Point to related scientific studies
- And...(God forbid)...hire writers or journalists who have already proven their skills
For an in depth discussion of how to make content production work, you can take a look at our content marketing guide for agencies. (Pinned by Moz team as well :-) )
Now, as much as we stress avoiding an over-reliance on tools, there are some great resources out there that can help you come up with original ideas:
- Content Strategy Generator Tool – This tool from SEOgadget shares content ideas from Bing News, Reddit, YouTube, Topsy, Yahoo! Answers, Digg, and so on. It also suggests bloggers to get in touch with.
- Google Analytics – Have you heard of this tool before? Nevertheless, you may never have considered it as a tool for content ideas. Keywords that people are landing on your site for are a good place to start.
- Site Search – What are people searching for once they have landed on your site? There are content ideas buried in there as well.
- Google Alerts – Try digging through your alerts emails and seeing if you can spot patterns or trends in the news that others may not have picked up on. Some of the best posts look for a common thread in the news and give a bird's eye view of what's been happening, looking for lessons, rather than just reporting on individual stories.
We were also impressed with what SkyRocketSEO had to say about getting content ideas. EvergreenSearch and SearchEngineWatch have also written wonderful and comprehensive content idea guides, and CopyBlogger has an excellent infographic on the subject.
Here's the most important part.
Before you pour everything into your guest post, check Google to make sure the idea is truly original. You want your post to say something new about the topic, so if the top posts in Google are looking a bit familiar, you need to head back to the drawing board before you waste your time.
3. Developing the Content
Once you have an idea and a blog to target with your guest post, it's time to start building your content. And it's our opinion that you should almost always go big, even though the risks can seem higher, as Dr. Pete recently pointed out. When the content is big, you won't be willing to waste it on a sub-par blog, which, paradoxically, means you're taking less risk in the long run.
While you're developing the content, you'll want to:
- Write with the blog's audience in mind. Read comments and pay attention to which posts get shared the most to aid you in this process
- Don't hold anything back “for later.” Pour everything you have about a subject into the blog post
- Use graphics
- Cite authoritative sources
- Use research data
- Organize your posts with subheadings and lists, and keep the paragraphs short.
- Get your points across quickly without padding the word count.
- Use plain English.
- Use anecdotes.
- Use humor.
- Figure out the most shocking, surprising, interesting, or humorous aspect of your post and mention it in the title and the first paragraph (ideally the first sentence). But don't give so much away that the reader has no reason to continue.
- Use “cliffhangers,” “foreshadowing” and other elements used by fiction writers to keep readers engaged in suspense.
Now, some of these bullet points contradict each other or aren't appropriate for every single post, but they should give you an idea of what we mean by “big content.” Always keep the primary purpose of the post in mind. Does it exist to entertain, to inform, to shock? Every sentence should have purpose.
Our Experience with Search Engine Journal
As an example of the kind of content we're talking about, you can take a look at what we had to say about Link Earning Strategies for the Post-Panda/Penguin Era over at Search Engine Journal. As SEOmoz has pointed out, SEJ is one of the top blogs in the SEO industry, so sub-par content wasn't going to cut it.
In order to develop the post, we:
- Hired talented copy editors to ensure the content was well written
- Based the content off of a Quora discussion we had been involved in that already gained some traction
- Made sure most of the visitors would be learning something new from the list
- Organized the content with an easy to digest format
- Knew the problem of building links in the wake of Google updates was a common one
- Avoided stiff and formal language
Some might suggest that all of this is too much work, but, if anything, we think we probably could have done more. To understand why this kind of effort pays off, consider the fact that:
- The post received hundreds of social shares
- It was mentioned again in Search Engine Land's SearchCap: The Day in Search under their link building section
- We received not just a high quality link, but high quality leads from the post
These are not the results you see from throwaway posts at GuestPostOnMyBlog.biz.
Author Bios
Sometimes we SEOs don't care much for author bios, or even hate them. A non-contextual link from an easily identified separate block of content...who cares? Well, we do. This is your sales pitch. Take advantage.
- Make your author bio fun to read so that readers see you as a person, not an automaton.
- Mention your brand name and don't focus on keywords. Branding matters!
- Include links where they make the most sense and where they will drive maximum conversions, not where they send the (already outdated) signals to the search engines.
- Encourage readers to contact you directly via Twitter or email so that they know you're available and ready to start a conversation with them.
4. Outreach
This is a huge part of the foundation behind a successful guest posting strategy. Yes, there are some high quality blogs where it's possible to get guest posts with minimal outreach as long as your content is exceptional and you have the right ideas.
That said, if outreach isn't an important part of your strategy, you will only be getting links from sites that regularly accept guest posts, and this doesn't offer the diversity your link profile needs in order to be genuinely robust, even if those links are high quality.
Keep the following in mind during outreach:
- Have the right idea at the right time. Come in too late and your idea will be redundant. Focus on topics that are either relevant right now, or that you feel will be relevant in the very near future.
- If the blog has guest posting guidelines, make sure you have met (and exceeded) them.
- Mention examples of your previously successful content (either on your own site or others).
- Demonstrate your authority with credentials, social profiles, awards, etc, but not to the point that it feels like you're gloating.
- Approach the contact directly and speak to them like a human. Don't shy away from a bit of humor and don't be too formal. Avoid sounding in any way like an advertisement.
- Don't take up too much time with the email expounding upon all the benefits of working with you.
- Contact them directly through Twitter or Facebook if they are active on their profiles to have a real-time conversation.
- Consider bringing up the possibility in a comment on a new blog post, as long as you also add value with your comment that relates to their blog post and contributes to the discussion.
- Flattery can help if it's honest and it doesn't make you look pathetic. It's best to do this after they know what you want, rather than before, otherwise it looks manipulative. (Okay, what you want from me already...)
- If the blogger has asked a question anywhere recently that doesn't seem to be answered, offer them an answer.
- The entire conversation is about how you can help them, not about how they can help you.
Outreach Tools
Okay fine, we admit it, we love tools. Just don't confuse “tool” with “strategy.”
- GroupHigh – Identify influential bloggers, track their reach, and send personalized messages through email or Twitter. Set up workflows and reminders to manage your contacts, and take advantage of geo-targetting for local clients.
- BlogDash – Find and reach out to bloggers who already want to be contacted.
- Rapportive – Get social feedback on your contacts directly from Gmail.
- Buzz Stream – Manage your contacts easily so you can focus on link building and relationship building.
Our Outreach Experience With ProBlogger
ProBlogger is pretty much the site for professional bloggers, so like SEJ, it's not exactly easy to get a post on the site. Unfortunately, when some people hear this they think their emails need to be perfectly polished and sleek. Well, here's our initial outreach email with ProBlogger:
I have to admit it's a bit embarrassing to share my bare writing with no copy editing (I'm Indian if you can't tell), but that's kind of the point. This may not be sleek and professional, but it's human and it's clear that this isn't from a template.
We received a response within 24 hours, which we felt was a great sign, even though this was what they had to say:
What can I say, we should have known better. Original content is the key to success. If we had to guess, we would say that this is probably where most guest bloggers would give up. But that is not how you succeed. The candid response was, to us, a sign that they saw us as humans and would be interested in what we had to offer if the content was right.
This should serve as an example of how outreach, idea generation, and content production can all come together as part of the same process. We worked together with our copy editor and thought a bit about what ProBlogger's audience is looking for, and how we could offer a solution in a unique way.
Well, this will get a bit meta, because we realized that what bloggers need most are new ideas, and a method for getting them. We didn't want to regurgitate what had already been said by others on the site, so we turned to an original resource: psychological research. This turned out to be a great unique selling proposition for us.
You can see the post on ProBlogger under the title: Get Creative About Your Content...Consistently. It should serve as a good example of unique content, as well as a decent guide to come up with content ideas that goes beyond what we've talked about so far in this guide.
Now this post wasn't easy to put together. The insights came from dense peer-reviewed science papers, and it wasn't easy to translate that information into something useful as a guide for bloggers, but hopefully you can see why it was worth the effort.
Persistence is important. We're not ashamed to say that we were rejected twice by SearchEnginePeople. Instead, we're proud to say that on our third attempt, our post about finding original data for content marketing was approved. The key is to keep trying.
5. Promotion
If you have chosen the right platform, and the content is original, helpful, and engaging, then your content has a good chance of going viral and, on some level, promoting itself. But, of course, you can dramatically improve your chances of success and expand your reach further if you take things to the next level and promote your guest post. Here are a few tactics to help that along:
- Let your friends and business contacts know about the post, especially the ones who care about the topic and who have their own audience. This is one of many reasons you should be regularly exchanging emails and social messages with influencers, so that these kinds of requests don't seem unsolicited and rude.
- Involve your client, and potentially any other clients who might be interested (but not competitors). Encourage them to share the material. You'll get bonus points here if your client has a lot of employees who would be willing to pass it along.
- Include the guest post in your email signature.
- Frequent Q&A sites, forums, and social networks that discuss your topic, and look for questions that your guest post helps answer. Offer them a few tips and suggest they read the full blog post for an in depth discussion.
- Highlight the guest post on your own site. Don't be concerned, this isn't “reciprocal linking.”
- Submit a press release about the guest post.
- Respond to comments, especially questions, and thank people for adding to the conversation. Don't overreact to negative comments. If you can respond without getting angry, go ahead. If you get upset, you will probably do more harm than good.
- Browse through your previous blog posts and link to the guest post where it makes sense. See if you can get your previous guest posts updated with a link to the new guest post as well. (This will be easier if you mention the old guest post in your new post first).
Conclusion: Make Your Guest Posts Count
Doing things differently is what sets you apart. There is no reason that this should change the second you start posting material on somebody else's property. Every piece of content you design should be produced with the goal of going viral, attracting links, and driving traffic.
Thinking of a piece of content as a way to build a single link simply doesn't have any appeal to us anymore. We hope to “re-brand” guest posting as part of a “big content” strategy, where the advantage of using somebody else's platform isn't just its domain authority, it's the potential to expand your reach and build relationships for further growth.

Great post - thanks for pitting this together for the community.
My concern is we're becoming way too over-reliant on guest blogging, and eventually, as it gets more and more spammed out, Google is going to algorithmically reduce its effectiveness. I think we really need to branch out more and talk about other types of link building and I hope to see some new fresh ideas for building links organically at scale.
Thanks for the post though - def gonna share it with my team!
Mark
Hey Mark,
I've thought about that extensively because the SE's have done that with other forms of link building. The conclusion I'm coming up with is that it's going to be tough for them since guest blogging doesn't leave the footprint like a directory submission or bookmark link does.
Unless somebody is doing guest blogging completely wrong, the post should just be a normal post with links in it... That's a pretty normal part of the web. Not saying it couldn't happen, just that the real form of guest blogging shouldn't really be spammy or noticeable.
What do you think?
- Kevin W. Phelps
Mark, I totally agree that Google will crack down on the spammier side of guest blogging, and already has started this process. On the other hand. the "good" guest blogging - the type I think Pratik is motivating folks to strive for, will continue to be safe and valuable.
Case in point - YOUmoz - this very blog, is entirely guest post operated. SEOmoz has several guidelines in place to ensure the quality of the content. Among these:
Submitting to publications that follow similar guidelines helps ensure the long-term value of your posts.
But guest posting can also get you in trouble. We see it more and more. This happens when:
Here's my rule: If your guest posting is easy, if it requires little effort or just a few dollars, it will probably get devalued or penalized by the search engines in the near future.
Pratik lays out an awesome process here. Guest posting should be hard. If it's valuable, it's going to mean work, and lots of it. But it's going to pay off.
The points by Mark and Cyrus are as useful as the post by Pratik. This is what keeps me coming back here!
@Cyrus Shepard, thumbs up for your thoughts and all good advice. And thanks for appreciating the post :)
Cyrus, I still don't understand & no one has ever explained to me how Google knows if a site owner got money for accepting a guest post.
Or even if someone puts a text link on their site for money.
It just seems impossible that G would know unless maybe they are calculating how many times per week the site owner puts up guest posts or links. Even then that's not full proof. They could just be hard workers.
@Mark, that was exactly was I was thinking ... Google wants unique interesting content on our websites ... but if this content always comes with links to the authors website Google will sometime simply devalue them because it is not naturally earned links but artificially built links.
Those guest posts they rather like to be connected to the authors' G+ profiles where they can later build a cool author rank with that will boost back to your website (where probably most of the content is written by yourself ... hopefully ;-)).
So they wuill simply follow patterns like "Guest Posting Query List" from this article (they will have their own patterns though) and value the content on these pages ... if to many links to authors websites they will probably try to devalue such links - sometime (probably not by tomorrow so keep on guest blogging ;-))
@Mark Ginsberg, thanks for bringing this point up and yes, that was the case for us to come up with this kind of post to encourage everyone to focus on the type of guest blogging that add value. Otherwise it would be again called as "guest blogging networks" (spam) instead of a quality/relevant guest blogging platform.
Interesting thoughts Mark. I've often wondered if Google would crack down on guest posts due to the proliferation of them lately.
One thing Google can't kill though is the eyes on the guest post page from the regular traffic the site gets. If it's there, it's there for anyone searching the site to see.
Sometimes we get so caught up in the STO aspect that guest blogs can really help your business as far as credibility. So that is a very good point you are making, Joseph
I think that footprints or an algorithmic crack-down would only something to worry about if one were consistently guest posting on the same sites over and over. We should seek out unique sites for guest posting based on what is the best fit for each client — with the ultimate goal of generating traffic from real human visitors, not just links. It's marketing for a modern era. I hope this is the year that marketing/pr and SEO finally start working together because that is what's going to look natural!
Good post.
I've been disillusioned lately with the sheer wealth of poor quality guest posts. Unfortunately, anything that shows signs of giving you an advantage in SEO will always be abused.
Thanks Matthew, I agree with your second point, that's very unfortunate and until the value of work can't be understood rightly I don't think there's any improvement going to take place.
2013 has started and as we all know guest blogging would be one of the primary link building activities for all the webmasters and SEOs. Knowing and doing guest blogging in a legitimate way can certainly help preventing websites from getting penalized under any future Google search algorithm from links perspective.
This post clearly defines the standardized, legitimate, and best guest blogging practices.
Remarkable post at the perfect timing and I must say that this is an ideal ultimate guide on guest blogging I've ever read on the web.
Conclusion is this post must be promoted on the main blog to spread advanced guest blogging awareness to larger audience. Hope others will agree too!
Thanks for your comment and appreciating the post. Yes, I'm also looking forward to see this promoted to the main blog :) - Let's hope for the best.
Hi Pratik,
You have just pick up and sharing awesome information about Guest posting. As lots of spam platforms are there and many SEO just share the guest post for getting backlinks for their websites so as all SEO experts predict that Google will take action on guest post blogging but, I must say your post is giving clear idea that how you can share the guest post and how you can find great, trusted and authority platform for sharing your content.
That's right Jemin, it's all about relevancy, authority and quality. I agree with others statement as well that Google might take action against guest blogging who does nothing but spam.
Pratik,
Thanks for such a detailed and awesome post. I like that you showed a bit of humility and actual included your outreach blunder. Thanks to you, I won't be making that mistake ;)
Glad to help Guillermo. That's the kind of the thing I wanted to include, so whosoever read this can learn from my mistakes :)
Excellent post and advice Pratik. Guest posting seems to have the most potential by getting published on the top industry sites. The good news for us Internet marketers is that many of the tier 1 sites, like SEOmoz through YouMoz, offer the opportunity for user contributions, assuming the quality of content is high enough to be approved and get published. The kind of brand reinforcement, engagement, authority and targeted traffic one can get from a quality guest post on one of these tier 1 websites makes the effort more than worthwhile. We are building our list of targets and SEOmoz is at the top of the list. Here is to 2013 being the year of "big content" with quality guest posts on top industry sites!
That's very true Rick, that link can be counted as valuable and authority. As Cyrus stated above "Guest posting should be hard. If it's valuable, it's going to mean work, and lots of it. But it's going to pay off."
Wow, really informative post with so many great recourses! I look forward to applying your techniques and seeing the results. Thanks!
Sounds good. Let me know how this works for you or if you need any help!
Pratik - Great guide!
Thank you so much for listing our service, Fizz Niche! Many of your readers have already come to submit posts and should be seeing them published soon!
I'm glad to see the discussions about this being a "spammy" tactic. I completely agree that it *could* be if you were only to focus on keywords and targeting high ranking backlinks. However, if you approach it as a content strategy with a focus on the value of the information and the experience of the reader - the SEO benefits come naturally. I believe that's what Google wants to see.
We see the results in the traffic that comes to the sites publishing the guest posts... and to those mentioned/linked in the posts.
Again - thanks for mentioning us!
You're welcome Rachel and I'm happy to hear about the progress. I hope they get good benefit. I'm a firm believer in "Valuable/helpful content will get you valuable/helpful links".
It is definitely a lengthy and hard process but that's the way things are heading.
PS:- Glad to see this post forced you to signup in SEOmoz ;-)
Very nice post - very thorough, lots of detail. Bold of you to share your email correspondence too - just goes to show that a good process is often more important than perfection.
I agree, Jason. The idea behind sharing the email correspondence was to make this post real-time and share what we've experienced.
I agree Jason. It's great to see other bloggers being open and transparent.
Well sir that is a fairly damn decent post the things to look for and things to avoid can also be helped by having a rating of importance for each point on how it can impact or benefit you. It's also possible that you can then put a figure and when you enter all the data into a spreadsheet you can start to rank blogs based on these scores.
+1 Rating systems are of huge benefit to make something that's typically subjective, a little more objective. Especially if you're doing it at scale.
- Kevin W. Phelps
Sounds like a good idea David :) - I should try out this.
A rating system will help in overall analysis and new tricks to employ. A good idea. Thanks for sharing your input.
Any advice on hiring talented, yet cost effective copy editors? We've done a lot of experimenting with different platforms and hiring individuals, it has been one of the most challenging aspects of the task.
That's a good point David. You can see the huge difference it can make. Look at the original outreach to Problogger without the copy editing versus the quality of the other content.
It would be hard to have talented, yet cost effective copy editors, however I'd recommend to look out for the best freelance writers at popular guest blogging platforms.
May be you could also try with hiring people from online job portal (i.e. elance.com) but identifying the best would be key for you. I'm sure you must have done all this but probably you can test different writers to see if their writing match with your tone and the requirement.
This is a wealth of information, so I'm bookmarking. Great tips on how to screen as well as types to avoid (oh and I hate those ones w/ all the ads). I do need to do some more guest blogging in 2013. Thank you for this great resource list, too.
No problem, glad to help.
Thanks for sharing this awesome post
You're welcome. Happy to help!
Superior post! Quite an extensive list that everyone will benefit from. Thank you. You could have made more than one post with the content you provided.
Thanks for the comment Kat, hope this would be helpful.
One thing I will say, in regards to penalties for that may come for guest blogging, there likely will be some, though I believe they are not going to be for the next 6-12 months, I think they have bigger fish to fry first. When they do come, the biggest factor to mitigate it will be the author rank of the person who created the content, and the virality of the content. In order to begin getting author rank properly attributed, make sure you are using the contributor section of your personal Google plus profile to detail every one of your articles, and link to all your social medias so your activity can be counted properly.
I know! I know. wild speculation. But I also love guest blogging, and for those who do it right there legitimately should never be a penalty.
My last tip - pick up the phone! I think blogs that do a lot of guest blogging give some value, but there is even more value in promoting where others are not already promoting, and calling small businesses for guest blogging can get you some extremely cool opportunities, if you approach it right. I locate the person to talk to on LinkedIn, send them a connect, then call and ask for them directly, and say "I just sent you a connection request on LinkedIn!", it cuts right through the marketing resistance, it so weird, but a great way to start that conversation. I also call myself a web journalist at this point, it communicates better than guest blogger as a word, these guys have no idea what that is, and by this point in the conversation they are a little weirded out and yet strangely intrigued.
Thanks for your detailed comment Joshua, appreciate it.
I agree on the point of author rank, it is definitely a factor Google will consider the most. However, it can be probably difficult for everyone to follow that and make sure that all things are properly lined up (Specifically talking from client work delivery perspective).
It would be early to say anything about Google's reaction on the guest blogging and hard thing to say that they won't penalize guest blog links for nearly 6-12 months. (We never know what will come when) In fact they're taking action on spammy guest blogging (Junk, low quality, spun content networks - Yes, there are many in the form of guest blog platforms, too). Here's Matt Cutt's video for the same - https://www.seroundtable.com/google-spam-blogging-15944.html
Your point about quality and right way of guest blogging is all correct. And about guest blogging through phone, it's definitely a great idea and the process you outlined sounds good. Perhaps it wouldn't be everyone's cup of tea BUT worth giving it a shot and earning those hard earned links.
Thanks again for sharing your thoughts.
Wow, what a comprehensive guide!
I'll definitely find this useful as our company may be starting guest blogging in the near future.
Great, hope this will help!
Wow Pratik, there are some real goodies in there. My new Communications Manager is sucking up your knowledge. Thanks for the share.
You're welcome Matt!!
Hi Pratik, Before your post about Guest blog posting, we did only traditional OFF page activity for our website. Thanks for giving a new and easy content marketing idea.
Pratik, just awesome awesome resource.
Thanks for sharing :)
Thanks Chitraparna. Hope you'd pass it along :)
This one truly an ultimate guide..as gone through lots of guest blogging post but this one stand out from the crowd..
I think in my experience till date with SEOMOZ i never seen any Indian author blog in seomoz blog..so many congratulations to @Pratik and thanx a lot for resource you mentioned...
We have had Indian authors on the YouMoz and SEOmoz blog before, as I've looked up time differences to make sure I'm publishing during the author's daytime hours. Some authors use their company name, or a name that doesn't necessarily appear Indian.
Hi Keri,
I think SEOMOZ need to make standard for Author name. Author name must be unique and more look like Gender name not company name. Company name look like they guys just using this Great platform for doing promotion of their company name through commenting and blogging activities.
And they can set their company URL or Social media platform in their profile page so i think author name is must be look like unique. That's my small suggestion to you people.
Hum don't know why thumb down... is suggestion or thoughts are not allow here?
Hi Keri,
Thanks for your clarification on this and i totally agree with you..
what i want to say on my previous comment is just in my Experience with SEOMOZ.. (let me also clear on this as well... that i m being a part of SEOMOZ community since last 6/7 months only) i am not talking about the general.. and may be i missed some Indian authors blog but this post catch my eyes and found it written by Indian author.. and specially featured on Main SEOMOZ blog from Youmoz that's why feel proud on this post and author that's it..
thanks again..
@Prakit.. thanks a lot mate.. saved my Thumbs down.. :)..
Hi Nirav,
Thanks for the comment.
And thanks for the heads-up Keri. Otherwise, this might have gained loads of thumbs down to Nirav's comment ;-)
I slightly disagree with #15 in the things to pay attention to section. A couple months ago the blog I write for did a limited amount of promotion for guest posts. It was somewhat necessary as a team was leaving, so we were a bit starved for content.
It ended up working out quite well. We got and posted only the very best posts and that was because we kept our standards high.
The flow of responses has died down a bit, but we still get them from time to time, especially ones over email because they see that we've accepted them in the past. So now we show our guest post guidelines partially to emphasis our standards, but also because we ended up getting the pitches to our customer service email. They got to us in the end, but having the page there does allow people to see the proper email to contact. And, if they still come in via the customer service email, we then know they weren't paying too much attention!
Hi Michael, I must say things would be different on a case by case basis. My intention behind the point #15 (In the things to pay attention to section) was to encourage you to go ahead and pitch the blog website owners that doesn't publicly allow the guest posts, but if you go to them with some great content and a unique approach, chances are high that you/your post might get accepted and you get a powerful link.
Great article, I especially like the outreach examples you've given. I find that the majority of the time it's not the content that is the problem, it's getting it in front of the right audience.
That's right Simon, your efforts will not pay off if you're unable to get your content in front of the right audience. If you're looking from just link perspective, then this won't matter, but if you're looking from customer engagement and your online presence perspective then this would matter.
hi Pratik,
Thank you for this awesome guide. I'll share this one with our team and I hope will deliver more conversions on our part.
I took me the whole day just reading it (Part by part) but it was well worth it. Specially the Content Strategy Generator Tool makes the job a lot easier!
Again thanks and more power.
That sounds good. Happy to hear this post is helping out.
Its one of my favorite posts on the SeoMoz ;) Especially thanks for queries list.
Thanks Andrew. Yes, keep the queries list handy, you'll save time :)
Hey Pratik, Its really ultimately guide of advanced guest posting.
I want to appreciate your write up skills where you have in-depth analyzed entire scope of advanced guest posting and for its success what exactly require to do. Especially, i want to thanks for those aspects where you have mentioned ample amount of points which bloggers should keep in mind while executing guest blogging.
Thanks for the great write up on Guest Blogging!
Thanks for the comment Venkatesh, hope this would be helpful.
Back in the days (2 years ago, give or take), when I was still doing SEO in the UK (now I'm back in Brazil) these whole Guest Blogging buzz was just starting there were only a couple of place where we could find guest post opps. I recall MyguestBlog, because I used to use a lot and got few badges there, now the list is huge.
Guest blogging is the foundation of my LB strategies these days but I must I picked up quite a few useful tips to improve it even further.
Thanks for sharing your experience. I didn't even realize it's been more than 18 months since I started guest blogging myself. I wasn't too much aggressive then and I'm not damn aggressive now, but I'm focusing on the practices that work these days and guest blogging is one of them.
Man Patrik, this post was epic. I was able to grab a few ideas of what to look for when searching for sites to guest post on. Your suggestions for search terms was also amazing.
When I put these to use, I'll be sure to let you know how they worked.
Thanks again and keep up the great work!
Thanks Joseph, I'd love to hear how things work for you. Feel free to hit me up in case if you need any help and I'm glad to see you found this helpful.
Hey Mark you are a great teacher. This is what lots of internet marketers sell as eBook (Info products). thanks for making it free. Seriously i got informed and this will add value to my guest blogging.
Very interesting article. I totally agree with Mark that we really need ideas for building links organically at scale. Thanks for sharing outreach tools and Guest posting query list.
You're welcome :) Hope this will help!
Building good links at scale tends to be an oxymoron these days.
Wow. It looks like this will be the new "authoritative" guide to Guest Posting. Seriously, great work! This will be invaluable to us as we are working hard on this tactic, but also making it genuine.
Thanks for the kind words Nick, glad to hear you found this helpful. Feel free to ask any question you may have.
This will certainly be promoted to the main blog, we just don't know the exact timing at the moment.
This sounds just EXCELLENT Keri :) - Pretty excited to see this promoted to the main blog. Thanks a ton!!!
Excellent post. There is tons to take from here, especially when you are an SEO newbie like myself :)
Glad to hear this. Hope you'll find this helpful.
Pratik very well written and detailed post. Thanks for sharing your experiences. Top man.
You're welcome Raman. Happy to help!
Hi Pratik. I enjoyed reading this —thanks for sharing your experiences in getting published on ProBlogger and SearchEnginePeople.
It's good to read a story where you were rejected, tried harder and were rewarded for your efforts —good on you.
Yes Robert, that was what I faced personally and wanted to share within this post. It's hard to see yourself rejected by various webmasters but trying hard helps getting those top notch links.
Pratik,
Holy crap! You really hit the nail on the head with this post. I would agree with so much of what you are saying. Like most link/brand building, you're not going to find a bunch of sites that meet all this criteria, but following this guide is much better than just looking at the PR and DA and considering it to be a "quality site" as long as it meets your numerical goal.
Great post!
- Kevin W. Phelps
That's right Kevin, there are many more things to look at other than just PR and DA. I have been contacted by many people who keep DA and PR as their primary factors to consider that a site is a quality or not and I have never understood their logic.
Spot on. That idea makes no sense. Sometimes we'll have clients with that mentality. Mainly because they are the easiest metrics to look at to gauge quality objectively. Usually it's just a simple conversation to educate them.
This is a great article and will help all those who are new to Guest Posting and are looking to incorporate into their SEO strategy.
One thing I would add is that you need to show 'passion' for the blog you are looking to reach out to. Instead of going in with a neutral tone, I find the best strategy is to add a little personality to the initial outreach email, this way the blogger/webmaster who reads it, already knows that you have something different from the other Guest Blog requests.
Tip: Dont be too funny or sarcastic, a simple comment that will generate a smile for the reader will do fine!
This is a kind of more advanced guest blogging guide compared to the guide for novice.
I agree with your point very much that adding a little personality to the initial outreach email would help stand out your pitch/requests different from other guest blogging requests.
Wow how long did it take you to write all this?!?! Tons of information... thanks maybe I can get into guest blogging :)
I don't really know how many hours I've spent to come up with this write up. It was more of a research than writing. But it definitely took very long to be able to come up with this long piece.
I'd vote for this post to be added to the SEOMoz blog.
I love that you give lots of very detailed instruction and then follow up with some specific case studies or examples.
I plan on sharing this post with my team and you have saved me the hours of work it would take to teach them how best to start on a guest blogging campaign.
Hey Geordie, I'd love to see if this gets promoted to SEOmoz main blog. Please pass this along and let me know if any help is needed!
Hey Pratik, lots of great information here. I really like your ideas for developing content, especially the statement, "Don't hold anything back 'for later'." That idea alone can help you create something great.
It's always good to be careful when guest posting, and with the suggestions you've provided new bloggers can be successful at steering clear of the bad opportunities. I also agree with Cyrus above, if it's too easy, it's not worth it.
Great post sir! Thanks.
Thanks George, you're welcome. Glad to hear you found this helpful.
Good Analysis about Guest Blogging, Great Stuff
Thanks Pratik
Thanks for the comment and good to hear you liked the post.
Nice post some decent tactics here,
In regards to some tools you mention, I have tested tools like Group High, they are great at finding guest blogging opportunities yet some times you really question the cost when you can design most of these lists yourself from scraping blog lists.
I agree with the comments about Google cracking down on Guest Blogging, I believe its only a matter of time before exact match terms in author signatures of guest blogs and withing text are hit hard, if you are doing guest blogging on scale you need to be more careful about the use of anchor text I would advise.
Probably going to be called "Google Guestblog Gorilla" update LOL
That's right James,
Varying anchor text is must after all those big updates last year. Thanks for pointing that out. Cyrus & Mark shared really great thoughts above.
What an incredible guest blogging resource. There are opportunities out there for those willing to look...you have made that task easier!
That sounds good Anita. I hope this would help out.
Great post, i am surprised i dint know about guest blogging, always struggled with writing and finding new article, I have registered with above sites see what happens. Thanks
Nice post.....
Hi Patrik.
I think guestblogging is a great think bud as well. Everyone should be very careful about guest blogging. Everyone should make a lots campain with different variations off anchor texts pointing to different parts off your web page and dont let the bloggers write it all at the time . Its easy to go over the limit with one match off anchor text.
My opinion is maybe not wright because Guestblogging is new in Slovakia we only have one system called PayPerPost.sk
Bud last 3months our eshop lost rankings from top 3 on firs page to second page for 4 main keywords what been making most conversions and as well visits. Our business lost about 25% turnover.
And all it happen after i use our Slovakian way off guestglogging system. Bud mistake was on mi side i made only one campain with them 4 anchor texts (in this case beds, chairs, sofas, furniture) and write to bloggers to they put allways some variation off the anchor text by what they think is the wright for the article to it is unique like modern beds or cheap furniture or somethink like this.
Problem was our quest blogging system dont let the bloggers put in to the articles another anchor text as i set in my campain. And no one blogger write mi back with it.
By the time i realize it can heart us we been having already over 50% anchor text for three words beds, sofas and chairs in one match. Anchor text furniture was fajn because link was pointing to the home page with lots off different links. Bud the word has lost rankings too.
The problem can by somewhere else im already preparing the article about what all we allready done when it gone down and as well what we prepare to do to get the top rankings back again maybe in here will find the right answer what exactly course the problems. It is most probably more off it together not just not right setup guestblogging system.
This is truly a comprehensive and impressive post. I have joined the group and taken copious notes and will refer back it again... so much to learn, so little time. ;-)
Thank you!
Elizabeth
I'm just getting my feet wet in the world of guest blogging and my boss sent this my way. Usually, I kind of speed read things. But there was no chaff here. Every word was important. I was encouraged that you mentioned ProBlogger, since I did have one post there in the past. After reading your piece, I guess I must have done something right out of ignorance!
Pratik,
Firstly thank you very much for such an detailed guide I will definitely be sharing with my guest blogging community...I would like to bring a site I am helping out with..I think it is definitely worth a mention it is https://www.guestbloglist.com/, It is very similar to Guestr but more upto date info additional features and more...
Currently the site as over 500 users and over 800 websites that are accepting guest post to date...we would greatly appreciate if you include in main under Where to Find Places to Guest PostThank you very much in advance for writing and hearing me out.
Regards
Brian
Hi Pratik,
Great post! I thought it was a great idea to address guest posting with long and short answers by first going from the 40 DOs and DONTs and moving on to longer explanations of each step in the process. Guest posting is an extensive project, and you emphasized how important each step is. We will definitely be sharing this advice on our own site.
Thanks for the great advice.
Coming up with that out of the box guest post idea is almost always a sure winner for me. :)
Great information. The challenge I have is with: "Will your target audience visit this blog? Will influencers who are followed by your target audience visit this blog?" I create ice breakers and team building activities yet my audiences have interests well beyond those offerings. It's finding guest blogging sites that provide a good chance of catching the attention of my markets or building a relationship with them. Thanks for taking time to provide so much detail. Your passion is leaking through.
Great post. I was looking for a guide to guest blogging, looks like I just find it.
That's awesome Nicolas. Let me know if you need any help!
Are people typically posting on the same blogs or I guess what I'm asking does it matter if you have 1 or 10 links from the same blog site.
Yes it does matter. If you want link benefit then you should get one link from one site only.
I really appreciate your blog. I like specially your suggestions for finding guest post approval sites that will save our time. There is also relevant content at How To Publish Guest Blog In 5 Easy Steps
Thanks Faisal, I'll check out your post.
Good job:) Really helpful for beginners like me
Sounds good! Feel free to ask if there are any questions.
I was about to search for info about guest blogging, and this .. hmm, it's not article, it's a whole book :) cleared out the situation about how one should act in the most professional way and what kind of approach he should use.
Very useful :)
Thanks for the kind words Martin. Hope this will come handy for future reference :)
Great stuff..!!!!!!!! this article not helpful in my daily SEO work but also enhance my Skill also ...
That's good to hear. Glad to help!
Excellent Sum-up Pratik. Am planning to start guest posting for one of my clients and your piece of advice is really helpful.
That's great to hear Venus. Let me know in case if you come across to any questions.
I like the tips you gave out on coming up with truly original content. It helps when your client has a lot of data and experience that you can use. And yes, God forbid when we have to hire pro writers!
Pratik, thank you so very much for putting together this post on guest posting (bookmarked and on 2nd read). I don't think I've read a longer post with this length of discussion in the comments but quite an exciting read as far learning your thoughts on how to do this properly. Think it will be pretty tough to find a better post on the subject. Can't wait to try some of these nuggets.
Thank you Pratik for sharing such valuable information, especially interesting for a fledgling blogger. The content is concise, informative and jargon-free. The half hour spent reading this will probably turn out to be the most valuable time spent today, and for many days after I expect!
Hi Pratik,
Ive been new on SEO techniques and trying hard to learn it by reading blogs at SEOMOZ.This blog had help me a lot. I've been reading your blogs since I read this one. I would like to read more blogs on SEO, it would be great that you send me some links and notify me if you have new blogs

Great post Pratik !
This guide will really helps to freshers as well as experiences SEO professionals. This guide will going to bookmark on my browser and i am going to spread it on my social channels !
Thanks and keep sharing your ultimate knowledge and guidance ! Good luck !
Great Post Pratik.... i never do Guest Posting.. but from now on.. It will b on Priority :)
Nice. I recommend to be careful with a post if the place isn't you niche, that doesn't like google. Guest posting is a great strategy for building an audience — no doubt about it. If you regularly write guest post for legitimate blogs that feature quality content, your posts can be an amazing source of traffic and inbound links. But finding quality guest posting opportunities can be a chore. I use "Topsy", it searches the social web (Google+ and Twitter) for popular topics. By doing a search for “guest post” and limiting your search to articles shared within the recent past, you can find new guest post possibilities before your competition does. Topsy also gives you social sharing information at a glance. By examining how many times each blog post was shared on Twitter, you can ascertain which opportunities might translate into the best exposure for you and your brand. Google+ and Bing ist very helpful too. Thanks!!
I have never done any guest posting. It really does sound like it would be very beneficial to a blog.
Hi pratik!
Thank for your great post, I have learned a ton of thing. I just have one question, Could we add our website link into the guest posting content? Or just add link in profile of author.
Thank you.
Still working to find good partners in my niche. Any ideas for directories or blog networks that help with guest posting?
I was too hard about seo hhaha
I just know seo on page, turn seo techniques are still many who do not i know, thanks for the article, this is very helped me to learn seo for lantai kayu
My gratitude, Pratik, for such in depth information, most of us newbies get SEO so wrong and every bit of help is welcomed.
I have bought hundreds of £s of software to do this or do that to help my sites but nothing works as good as the proper information.
I have copied a lot of info out of this post and I shall be doing some in depth work.
Once again, thank you...

That list of communities will be very useful for me. Let's just hope I will find more good blogs than bad blogs.
Hi Pratik,

Google wants unique interesting content on our websites. You have just pick up and sharing awesome information about Guest posting. Say, for the word cms development services you can search in Google for the relevant guest posting sites and you can directly approach them to do a guest posting or guest blogging whatever may be the options are.
I see that it is very difficult the issue of positioning, seo experts, I envy the ease that have positioning websites, writing on blogs as guests, is very good strategy, and you make friends.
I on my blog imagenes graciosas I'm still at the beginning of the seo, I have much to learn
Hey Pratik nice post!
You've clearly added as much value as you can on this one especially for beginners considering how you also added the advanced search queries.
I'll be sure to point my community on your post to get them up and running with their guest posting tasks.
In my opinion the best place to guest blog are places that have relatively high standard for the type of blogs they accept
Hey Pratik. I follow your lots of post on SEJ. Now I Found this post today on MOZ today. I will definitely try these guest post strategies in 2014, and analyze what happen!!
Hello
I am new to this, and am doing my own SEO. Seems like when I am trying the least, my rank gets better but I Not sure what I am doing wrong. so my question is guest blogging really better for top ranking..?
I Hope u give me some suggesations!
Good points, in keeping the blogs articles. It summarizes the do's and dont's in writing an article or blog. Its important to keep these in mind and to follow these guidelines. but we should keep our goal: Be Relevant.
Thank you for sharing so much information. I have tried some of advices on my blog and now I am going to try more in order to get more guest authors on my blog.
Hey Pratik,
Good Article. You pointed out many things that I already knew and other that I did not.
Will keep this article as reference for the future.
Thanks, hope this would help in some way!
Thanks for this Pratik, it is hard work finding good places to market clients and get them in front of their target audience online - I think this aspect of guest blogging can be glossed over in the focus for backlinks. One of the tools we have started to play with which is not mentioned above (and disclaimer - I have no affiliation with) is InkyBee: www.inkybee.com. This is great for blogger outreach and could be added to the tools above.
Thanks for your comment and sharing the tool. I'll check out.
Yup, using this today. Thanks!
Sounds good. Let me know if you need help in anyway.
Hi Pratik, what could I say. A great post about advanced guest blogging. Thanks for the great write up.
Thanks for your comment Siva, appreciate it.
It is a very useful and informative post on guest blogging. Thanks for sharing.
You're welcome. Happy to help!
Yeah this is great. It reassures me that a few great guest blogs on great sites is better than a lot of ok guest blogs on ok sites.
You got it right Tim.
But my list of the Ultimate Guide to Advanced Guest Blogging is much bigger and richer than the last one published yesterday!
Thank you for this excellent addition to the blog, I have saved it to my bookmark for future reference, having read it and the comments I know I will need to refer back to it.
Grouphigh looks like a handy tool, I have not used it yet but I will be in the near future.
I would like to offer one tip that I think can help people get more traction with their guest blogging outreach and that is use the phone, I have had some excellent results by speaking with website owners, often about other things and just by being genuinely interested in what they think i have been asked if I would like to contribute. You can do the same thing if you are able to attend trade shows.
Thanks again and I hope my small contribution helps
Sean
Thanks for the tip Sean, I haven't tried it personally but I'd definitely give it a try. Appreciate it!
Also try guestauthor.org for finding sites which accept guest posts. They list hundreds of authoritative blogs and include pagerank, alexa traffic, links to guidelines and allow you to search by domain authority, mozrank, etc. Best of all it is free to search or to list your blog if you accept guest posts.
This is the most comprehensive analysis of guest blog posting I have read - top stuff! The hardest part of guest blogging is finding the opportunities.
It would be so easy to start 'panicking' and write an article for a poorly laid out, spammy website, but standing firm and waiting for quality opportunities is what brings in the rewards long term.
That's right,I agree. It definitely takes efforts and time to find the opportunity and get into the conversation with the blogger/webmaster. But it's going to pay off in the long run.
I take it that this: https://guestbloggingwebsites.com is your new startup?
I have bookmarked this article. Great information and useful idea.
Glad to hear this. Thanks!
Hi Patrik, great post really!tks for these wonderful advices..I always look at PAge Authority and Domain Authority using Seomoz bar. To add, I also look at MozTrust and MozRank, to see if the given website is getting spammy links or not, so the number 6, in my opinion, can go inside the number 2 (about20 Things You Should Do and Pay Attention to)
tks
Thanks Franco, glad you liked the post. I think #6 and #2 both are different in the "20 Things You Should Do and Pay Attention To" section.
Hey, Thanks for taking your time to search your experience with guest-blogging!
I manage many international platforms and I am finding it difficult to find guest blogging opportunities in the countries I operate in.
Could you recommend a platform like myblogguest.com but for other languages? (Spanish,Italian,Czech,Russia)
Thanks
Hey Flavio, thanks for the comment.
Thus far, I have not performed guest blogging for other than English sites. However, I'm aware about the Russian version of MyBlogGuest that you may try out. https://myblogguest.ru/
Hope this will help.
By the time you've gone through this checklist, there wouldn't be much time to write anything! Interesting article, but IMHO, it's paralysis by analysis. Your gut can tell you more than your brain at times. For example, the future potential of a site, rather than what its doing RIGHT NOW, can be more important, from a "positioning" aspect.
Thanks Zab for your comment. You're right at your point, but things keep changing.
Hi,
This blog is longer than the usual but it's really full of good content. And I find the resource of the website that provide guest blogging very useful, thanks!
It's definitely longer but we've tried to include as much needed information as possible. Appreciate your comment!
A good post, but since the Google updates getting a response from blogs is very rare. I'm a journalist and I write all my content to a (I hope) decent and entertaining standard, but due to the influx in guest post requests most blog owners will ignore you. What I've been doing is getting in with Regular Contributions requests where you send in a CV of sorts. It has set me up with a steady stream of articles I can send off.
Frankly if I was a blog owner (and I am, but I get no requests for Guest Posts) receiving a perpetual stream of guest post requests from people who are clearly SEO sorts only interested in their byline and two links, I would say "No. Eff off."
Some excellent resources pointed out though, Pratik. Wicked, innit.
Hi Alex,
Thanks for the comment and sharing what's helping you more. I'd definitely be agreed with the point of seeking for the regular contribution opportunities. Sometimes that helps a lot if you're at the right place or sometimes it doesn't.
I have heard guest blogging is important seo point of view. you elaborate this very well
Thanks for the comment. Hope this will help.
Hey Patrik,
thanks for this (very long) article on guest blogging. I was just about to look for guest posting opportunities, so your post came in handy!
Keep the good work up.
Cheers,
Fabian
That's great Fabian. Glad to hear I could help!
Thanks Pratik - this is really comprehensive. It's so true that the easier it is to generate a backlink, the lower the quality of that link. Even when I use guest blogging platforms, I am always amazed at the bizarre mix of blogs that offer to publish my posts. I recently had a post about blogging published on a blog, only to find that the previous post was about a cleavage competition!!
Thanks for the comment. Hope this will help!
Hello Pratik! All I can say is that this post is AWESOME..well it is long but its really worth the read. Can I say, it is the ULTIMATE guide to guest blogging!
Thanks for sharing this one Pratik. I find this really helpful especially now that I'll be doing a lot of guest posts! Cheers to you and more power!
-Ces
Thanks Ces, I hope this will come handy.
Hi Pratik,
Now I could be even more clear about the guest blogging. But I don't find how long will guest blogging add credit to the user's link(website/blog). Because of search engine updates.
Time will say everything :) Let's hope for the best!
Pratik,
Fantastic post, I really loved "Will your target audience visit this blog? Will influencers who are followed by your target audience visit this blog?" Targeting an audience will not only drive qualified traffic to your site but sites that actually have an audience to be targeted are typically the sites you should be approaching. Sharing with my team thanks.
That's great Jared, glad to hear your liked the post. Hope this will add some value to the process people are following for guest blogging.
Great post! I am always looking for areas where I can be a guest blogger and/or feature a guest writer on my own blog at midwestfarmgirl.com. Love the tips on how to keep guest blogging alive.
Nice article; helpful tips. I didn't realize Google had filter options for Blogs and Discussions.
Good to hear you found this helpful. Glad to help!
Pratik,
To be very frank, now days guest posting has become a business to earn some buck, i am sure soon this will be counted as spam work too. You can easily find out that except some websites, mostly are trying to earn money through guest posting. I don't deny that there are some websites which has kept the dignity of guest postings but mostly has converted it into a full time business.
Unfortunately I'll have to agree with your words. But If we leave those platforms behind, there are many quality/authority platforms that won't ask for a fee but they would ask for the great content. I have come across to such platforms who seek for helpful/detailed content instead of a fee.
Pratik,
i fully agree with you, platforms like seomoz, search engine journal, search engine land, search engine watch are really the landmark. Whenever i read an article like this i feel positivity. Definitely in the current scenario authors like you are playing great role to save the dignity of content.
+1 for your comment Nazre. Thanks for understanding the value of the content.
Pratik, you said - "We're going to help you combat this by sharing how we got posts up on ProBlogger and Search Engine Journal, and by introducing you to our strategy for success with our clients."
I assume that you do offer guest blogging services for your clients. Right?
I do, sometimes.
My question is - wouldn't it be better if we guest post on high profile blogs like SEJ to build our own authority rather than for the client? What do you say?
Yes I do offer the guest blogging services. As far as your question is concerned, I must say that building a personal brand and helping out the clients both are different things. As long as you are capable enough to build your personal brand, you should open up to help you clients too and that's what I do. Probably if you have misunderstood the intention behind the line you shared, then let me try to make it clear.
We're going to help you combat this by sharing how we got posts up on ProBlogger and Search Engine Journal - This is what I shared as our experience with both the platforms within the post.
and by introducing you to our strategy for success with our clients. - This is what the post is all about. The guide/strategy of advanced guest blogging.
Hope this would help!
usefull footpritns :)
Thanks :)
Sound Good Post! :)
thank you!
Thanks for the comment!
"the niche doesn't have to be identical, but there should be an overlap in audience"
If you don't get this one right then everything else you do will go to waste. Great content in front of the wrong audience isn't so great. I think a lot of site owners know that content marketing and guest blogging is important, so they go for any opportunity they can find. Why waste your time writing for a site that isn't going to reach your audience? The links aren't worth it on their own.
That's all correct Nick, It's never wise to get a link from a high authority site which is not at all very much relevant to your business/niche. Looking for relevancy should be primary.
I just can't get enough of the guest blogging posts, and this looks like one of the best ones I've seen. Very impressive that you got a post on ProBlogger.
Question: Do you use personas when you are doing outreach in certain verticals, especially those like mom-blogs or travel blogs where they may be extra sensitive to SEOs contacting them?
Thanks Joe, it was a great experience being featured on ProBlogger.
For your question, when you're outreaching to highly authority websites, I'd recommend to use personas. You'll get good results. Now, considering the ever increasing demand of guest blogging I assume that the bloggers would be getting high # of requests daily, so to stand out from others and getting your content approved, persona would help a lot more.
This is so epic! The article clearly talks about what to do and what not to in guest articles. People miss ethics these days. I will write about that in seosiren and link your website to learn more! :)
Sounds good :)
Very good, and long, article but with great info. Thanks!
Thanks Roberto. Appreciate the comment.
Hi Pratik,
Thanks for sharing such an interesting post with us. I used to be able to find good advice from your content.
That's great to hear. Thanks for the comment.
Great article with detail information, many times getting guest post work feel a tedious work but after reading this article, make us this work easy....
Thanks Pratik..
Glad to hear this. Hope this would come handy.
Top drawer post - it does exactly what is says on the tin. To some extent I think Google will move to devaluing guest post links but not for well crafted content on the right site, so really your tips on finding those sites resolve that.
Thanks for your comment and sharing your thoughts, Michael. I'd recommend to read the comments above by Mark and Cyrus.
Yes, it is indeed Ultimate Guide for guest blogging, thanks for the tips where we should pay attention or not! . .tweeted!
Thanks Ram, appreciate the tweet :)
That is an amazing article!! So much useful info!
Thanks! Hope this will be helpful.
Very nice post with lots of detail! Thanks for sharing
No problem. Glad to help.
Thanks for this great post. I recently began reaching out to other blogs for a guest post. Your post has helped develop a stronger strategy for my guest posts. I am excited to see the results.
That's great to hear. Let me know if you need any help!
Great article. To be honest, I think AllTop is a little high level and generally isn't a great place for normal linkbuilders at a mid-sized client level.
(Warning: Apologies, self promotional bit coming)
You might wish to add my tool Outreachr (https://www.outreachr.com) to your list of places to find guest post blogs. You simply give the tool a list of tags and it gives back a list of sites with all the social media and normal contact details it can find....plus it's dynamic so the list constantly changing.
Outreachr looks like a pretty cool tool. Thanks for sharing - I'm looking forward to exploring it a bit later.
Damn - went to ProBlogger and clicked on "If you'd like to guest post for ProBlogger check out our Write for ProBlogger page". All I got was:
In 2013, ProBlogger is taking a different approach to the content we publish. That new approach means we can’t accept any unsolicited submissions at this time. The strategy may change in future, but for the moment, we apologise that we can’t consider guest post submissions.
Fantastic post all the same Pratik! Very, very thorough.
"Unsolicited admissions" means that really do have a backlog and want to clear it before taking more posts. Sad. I wanted to try too :)
Thanks Brad. Yes, unfortunately ProBlogger has now stopped accepting guest post submissions but I hope they'll start accepting again soon.
What a great post, I so appreciate the step by step suggestions. very helpful!
You're welcome. Happy to help!
Hi All nice post and its really helpful

Great post pratik, interesting things on guest blogging. Keep it up :). Thanks.
thanks!
Generic post on a great article right here!!
Have you found this type of detailed post anywhere around? I'd love to see.
No I have seen stuff like this on some courses though on ideas on how to find guest posting opportunities. But really appreciate the hard work you've put in to following up everyone's comments. How did you put the above post together through your years of experience or reading other peoples posts?
Hi Pratik,
Awesome BlogThank you for much needed information on Guest blog.
You're welcome Siddu, glad I could help.
Kudos for such a detailed and analytical post about guest blogging. Thanks for sharing.
This is as thorough as it gets. I do a lot of guest blogging and I'm the first to admit that I'd never heard of some of these strategies for finding guest posting opportunities.
Thank you very much for publishing this kind of article. I like your article very much. I want share my website details to you please give me some information to increase performance like as your website.
Hey, I am new to this, and am doing my own SEO, even though I am a real estate agent. Seems like when I am trying the least, my rank gets better. Also, if one keyword is doing good, I find my others to be slipping. Not sure what I am doing wrong. Since I am a realtor, and there are over 1000 real estate websites locally, not sure what they are doing differently. If anyone has time, any chance they can glance at charmingcabins.com and tell me why the heck am I doing so good for the keyword "lake tahoe foreclosures" but bad for "lake tahoe real estate". Thx in advance!
