The measurable risk of any particular SEO tactic is very hard to measure. After all, experimentation with successful sites in the SERPs is not only dangerous, but also expensive and time-consuming, while avoiding risks by using precautionary measures is virtually costless.
Sitewide links are part of an ongoing discussion at SEW, while link building systems like DigitalPoint's Co-Op tool are also under scrutiny. If the search engines do decide to penalize these methodologies or if they already do when they are detected, is it worthwhile to attempt them, or is caution the better part of valor, and online success?
I personally don't try any known risky tactics (other than the occassional large scale link purchase). My view is generally that such tactics are not immoral or improper, but simply dangerous and therefore, should be avoided unless there is a good reason to risk your ranking success. I also am of the opinion that it is much easier to sleep at night, knowing you've earned your ranking position success, than to worry that your tactics could, at any moment, cost you your business...

Hi Rand, I totally agree, site-wide links a very dangerous, especailly of they're the footer or on the side bar. It's just asking google to come in an penalize your site. We already are aware of the dangers of "renting links" and typically, rented links appear on the homepage at the footer and are usually on each page throuought the site. Good points!
I have always thought that this could be risky but what about web design / dev companies that put site wide footer links - would this have an adverse affect on thier SERPS? Surely they shouldnt be penalised for this and if this is the case then surely "aquiring" site wide links on other sites should be a similar sitaution to this.
Im only learning and one thing I have learnt, is that nothing is a give, nothing is proven and everything is calculated guesswork.
Sitewide links are dangerous, but im sure that a sitewide link for a very closely related site, would be very good. eg I operate a Darts site, so im sure that a sitewide link on a sports directory would be ok.
Hope so, because im looking for one so your article and opinion was good reading for me.
Thanks.
