Since the partnership between SEOmoz and Distilled began, ideas had been floated for creating new linkbait along similar lines. After a late-night brainstorm, the concept of having almost simultaneous weddings on either side of the Atlantic moved into planning stages.
No doubt those from the SEOmoz HQ are planning a post about how it went down in Oregon, so here's a quick roundup of the online side of the wedding here in Scotland. (For the benefit of Americans who've never had a chance to visit, Scotland comprises of 30,000 square miles of heather-covered hills and two thousand castles; the main hobbies are drinking whisky and haggis hunting.)
Live Twittering from the Groom allowed people all over the world to follow the day's proceedings.
During the day, the Distilled blog carried regular photo updates, alongside guest posts by the Registrar, the Bride's father and others; these ranged from entertaining, to enlightening, to poignant. StumbleUpon and Reddit sent a reasonable amount of traffic throughout the afternoon (click to enlarge):
The organic traffic drawn by the weekend's blog posts highlights the importance of unexpected long-tail searches.
Later in the evening, the speech by Best Man Duncan Morris put to rest the myth that he'd met when they played basketball together. An intrigued audience did what they could to find out more, pushing the event firmly into the Hot Trends list (click to enlarge).
lol, nice job for sure. I was just thinking about how many times my wife would kill me before the end of the wedding if I pulled out my phone and said..."I do..but hold on while I finish typing this in...I'll put the ring on in just a second..."
I love the 6th long tail search phrase. It sounds like the searcher is having a conversation with the search engine. ;)
Makes you wonder what kind of results they expected in the SERP. LOL!
Sounds like the kind of thing I would search for. Honest.
"Please find me a single hot chick that likes a slightly overweight geek who also likes hiphop, RNB amd spends a mad amount of time online. Thank you."
Doesnt work.
It will someday, really. Keep the faith.
Haha. This is hilarious. I have been totally off the grid so this is the first time I've seen it... For the avoidance of doubt, I twittered on Sept 12th (day before the wedding) and haven't since (though probably will shortly). Duncan and I were joking about live twittering it - but I hadn't thought of the "I do" one - that is very funny.
Rob - feel better now you know I think it's funny?
Rob's job on the line for a few minutes. Will finds it funny. Rob still in employment. A mini adventure.
Yeah, my heart was in the throat for a few minutes there....
It seems a shame to have to drag some commenters back to reality; maybe most of us live in an alternate reality half the time anyway?
The fact that some people didn't recognise it as satire straight away perhaps suggest something about your rep, Will ;-)
Someone gave this a down-thumb? Wow. Where's the love people?
Yeah, I think that might have been Will :-s
Well Will, atleast Trends says you are Volcanicly hot! Now let's hope your newly wed wife agrees on that one..
Congrats on the couples!
Blurry brilliant Rob - just loving the faux analytics data, nearly choked on my coffee.
Congratulations to Will & Heather, Rand & Geraldine
Dodgy photoshop skillz FTW.
Read this post to day... a year too late.
But it still is relevant..
Thanks
ha ha Congrats!
Congratulations to Will and Heather, Rand and Geraldine.
Looks like a very interactive duo of events. maybe a sign of the times.
congrats.
no idea how you managed to find time to twitter etc on your wedding day. we had an easyish one on long island in the great barrier reef, and even that was a bit stressfull, making sure all ran smoothly.
Oh, and...
CONGRATULATIONS to both couples!!!!
Re: keyword #4, srsly? How in the world did you narrow down the field to those exact choices?
Will, were you actually tweeting a post for Brent right in the middle of your ceremony? He should be the one fetching your dram!
Congrats to all four people referenced in this post!!
LOL - I just read part of that post as:
"Drinks Whisky and Haggis" :)
Congrats to everyone though!
"Who is now SEO's most eligible bachelor"? Dude!
I would have happily gone to either/both weddings, but alas I am in Texas ... and barely know Rand and Will. But those are just small details really!!
So Will really twittered during his wedding? Really? Or was it the other brother pretending to be Will? I mean they are really interchangeable after all. {Hi Tom!}
Not sure how I'd feel about that whole twittering the wedding thing. Hmmm ...
Congrats to both! I haven't see the pics from Will's nuptials yet, but there are some great ones on FB from the SEOmoz crew of Rand's.
