I was browsing my friend Jeremy's site last week and saw that he had already reached Round 8 in his Q+A series. I've done it once before here at SEOmoz - Questions Here and Answers Here and Here (there were a lot of questions) - but it's been 7 months, so I think we're due for another round. Besides, last year's thread resulted in my favorite comment and reply of all time.
The way this works is simple - just ask any question you'd like in the comments below on topics including:
- SEOmoz's History
- The SEOmoz Website or Business Model
- Our Venture Capital Investment & Future Plans
- My Personal Life or Opinions
- Other Mozzers
- SEO Industry/Politics
- Search/Online Marketing Tactics & Strategies
We'll collect questions from now until Wednesday or Thursday of this week, then publish answers by next Monday (if not before). Be aware that I may not be able to answer all questions fully, but I'll do my best to address as many as possible in as much detail as I can.
p.s. If there's a question below that you're particularly interested in seeing answered, give it a thumbs up. I'll try to prioritize answers and depth of response based on the thumbs.
How does your beard influence your SEO powers?
What top SEO tip do you keep to yourself and haven't revealed to the wider SEO community?
@Stephen - Great question. Too bad it won't be answered. It's a catch-22 actually.
First - you can be assured it's a great - in fact - an incredible tip.
Second - you can be further assured that within weeks of posting the answer, it would be of little use.
That's one of the beauties of SEO. When you're one of the few "in the know", on something - your better off keeping it that way.
:)
With the recent announcement of a business partnership with Distilled, you've opened the door to an external company representing SEOmoz on the blog, in Q/A, and apparently in delivering end customer SEO/M services. Personally, I think it's a good idea and one that will help drive additional revenue and profit for both companies, while improving quality of service to your professional user base.
Here's my question:
The SEOmoz brand is one of - if not the strongest in the SEO industry. I wondered if you have you ever considered "franchising" the SEOmoz name to where you would literally train companies to deliver SEOmoz branded, SEO/M services in specific geographies, using best-in-class business practices?
My Question focusses on the same core topic - your relationship with distilled. and I think maybe both you and distilled may need to answer this one:
I have very often come across questions based on UK specific SEO - will we see a UK focus in the upcoming articles / blog posts or maybe UK specific premium content?
If there were other regions that would benefit from such local SEO knowledge and content would you consider partnering with them either via the methods that Sean mentioned or any other?
As an add on to Sean's question, after the Jason Gambert scandal in terms of tademarking SEO "with the goal ofstandardizing it" (sarcastic tone on my end), do you actually believe that there should be certain standards and ethics in SEO that are more established than Bruce Clay's code of ethics? If so, do you believe these standards require expert education and certification? Do you see SEOMoz professional program going towards a standards training program?
I personally do not believe in any kinds of SEO standards but I would love to see your take on it.
I'm fascinated by time management - mostly because I constantly struggle to fit more into my day and wonder if I'm investing my time wisely.
Does your day still look like this?
Or has it changed with your growing public role?
We already know how Fluxx spends his day, but how about the other people on your team?
Is their time typically split like this suggestion?
Or is this a better illustration of a typical SEOmoz day?
agree - I'd particularly like to know what tools/techniques you use to help you time manage your tasks better?
That's easy... I'll bet it is "get Jane or Rebecca to do it."
LOL.
@vin - show off! We all know how much you value Moz!
Good questions. What do you guys all do besides blog and speak at conferences?
Are you glad that you took the VC funding? Has it been working out well for you so far?
If you had to start over today with nothing except the knowledge in your head - No connections, no reputation, no investment money, nothing but a computer and an internet connection - and only the money left over from your day job at McDonald's - a maximum of $300 accumulated by living on left over fries and selling blood. How would you leverage that meager beginning into SEO world domination - or a decent living? Assume that self employment is a major part of the goal.
In 150 words or less.
I love these kinds of questions.
Hopefully Rand will deliver something tangible. Typical responses from other super-affiliates and bloggers usually lack any kind of substance.
Fortunately, Rand would never do us like that.
In 150 words or less.
Lol. You should have just cut it off at 140 characters and tweet the answer ;)
In 150 words or less.
Ok, as many words as required, but I would appreciate the answer by the end of my lunch shift.
And as a Private Message, no doubt...
David, I may be able to shine some light on this. If you take out the part about McDonald's, replace "blood" with "sexual favors," and replace "$300" with "65 cents," then this describes my situation perfectly. I've found that the first step towards SEO world domination is to create a YOUmoz profile and harass the weak SEO professionals. It makes everyone hate you for a while, but it eventually brings great success and fortune. Well... so I've heard. I'm still waiting, actually. P.S. Sean... where's my 65 cents?
Darren,
When you wrote your first post, you may recall that after I "schooled you", you commented as follows:
So there you have it, ladies and gentlemen... Sean Maguire Pwns YOUmoz Newb!
I really thought that you had learned your lesson, however based on the above comment it seems I was mistaken. Therefore, you leave me no choice other than to school you again.
I would have to disagree with your statement that the first step is to create a YOUmoz profile.
Personally, I've found that the first step to SEO world domination is to have the miniscule level of intelligence required to spend 8 bucks to register www.yourname.com, if you are lucky enough to still have it available.
This way, when you become the World's Greatest SEO, you'll be able to reap the benefit of the vast amount of traffic that comes from the inevitable inquiries on your own name.
So, while I don't have $.65 for you, I do have a domain that I would be willing to sell to you. Yes - that's correct - I OWN - you.
P.S. I may even be willing to give it to you if you start behaving yourself around here. Have a nice day. :)
7 bucks with a coupon. Don't forget to also reserve YourNameNude.com
I am quite surprised this doesn't redirect to something - anything really.
Or that it doesn't have a photoshopped picture or anything?
You must be mellowing out there Mr. Maguire.
SEOmoz Premium Membership: $49 a month
Domain Registration: $8
Hosting Account: $7 per month
Schooling and owning an SEOmoz upstart: Priceless
@Vin -
I just picked up my new domain this morning. I need to give this some thought to really do justice to its namesake.
BTW - what was his name? I forget. Oh wait, that's right. I think I'll call him:
dotnetboy :)
You'll be the first one I contact when I launch "The Mother of All Websites"
So, while I don't have $.65 for you, I do have a domain that I would be willing to sell to you. Yes - that's correct - I OWN - you. Ho. Lee. Shit. Sean... you are the man! I mean... I suspected as much before, but this makes it official. As for behaving myself, I'm afraid I have some bad news: I submitted a blog entry last Friday that is currently awaiting approval by Rebecca. It kinda-sorta might possibly mention you in there somewhere... I guess what I'm saying is... please say nice things about me on your new domain?
Darren,
While I disagreed with your initial comment on this thread, I have to say - I agree wholeheartedly with this one. That is definitely some bad news. Oh well. It happens.
Mozzers:
If you have a favorite keyword / phrase you would like to see Darren Slatten receive a top ranking for, please PM me. His new blog will be up by the end of this week - including pictures.
Consider it "Open Mic" Night at www.darrenslatten.com. Anything goes folks!
Well there's my task for the afternoon sorted.
PM? Hah! I submit mine in good faith infront of all to see.
"SLAMDUNK".
Need more? ;)
If you have a favorite keyword / phrase you would like to see Darren Slatten receive a top ranking for, please PM me. Yeah I got one... SEO. Thanks.
Sean - you just made me soooo proud.
now that is a smackdown for the books. pardon me while I register 50 more profiles just to thumb this up.
Darren - If there was an icon to click to award an "Ew!" this comment alone would probably earn you a month of Pro.
Edited so you could tell what the heck I was referring to.
Did SEOmoz steal their tagline?
Note to Zafar:
SEO Rule #1 - Original content is always the best way to develop credibility - especially when it comes to your tagline.
Just in case the tagline (hopefully) changes - so you'll know what I was talking about.
lol good catch Sean. But they do say imitation is the best form of flattery...
haha, good spotting!
Although clearly SEOmoz were late in the game
Is "rank better" a moz trademark? (after I learnt you could trademark countries I think you can do just about anything!)
The tagline actually came from a poll on the blog after we were asked to submit suggestions.
I knew they should have gone with mine...
It's not a trademark Sean. I love SEOMOZ soo much that I had to do it :D
Where's your head at?
(Sorry, it's Monday morning and that's about as good as I can get at the moment - I'll come back with something more probing at a later date).
Actually, here's one:
Do you ever feel that our industry (and in fact the more general web sector) is awash with too much testosterone (from both sexes)? I sometimes feel like there's a real macho culture, and that it's a big turn off.
Guess its a side affect from being anonymous over the web - tho to be fair having spent some time with british army i dont find the web overly macho!
Do see your point solution: more manicures, massages and aromatherapy for the web division guys and gals!
I'm guessing that compared to the army very little would be macho (although I have a friend who is a Marine and at Uni he studied art & craft!)
I guess what I mean is that there seems to be a lot of 'shouting', a lot of pissing contests, and a lot of general agressiveness. I agree that it's down to the anonymity, but still feel that we, as an industry, could work to ease this sort of rubbish out.
Agreed, very valid point Ciaran
Have you read the comments on Digg, Engadget, or Wired? I'd say we're pretty mature, all things considered. Well, you and I, anyway ;)
I do agree, though, that the general misogyny online is really getting out of hand. We all need to take a deep breath sometimes and step away from the computer. Having your ego tied up in what some total stranger on Digg or WOW thinks of you is just plain sad.
Pete - I wasn't specifically referring to sexist attitudes; some of the worst stuff comes from women.
Rather it's a very wild-west, I'm better than you are and my balls are bigger (even if I haven't got any) kind of attitude which I find pathetic in most cases. It's in no way reserved to one nationality but does seem more prevalent amongst my North American cousins.
I always put it down to the fact that this is what happens when the geek inherit the earth - the bullied become the bullies.
I'd try to defend my own country, except that it's ruled by a guy who thinks he's a cowboy. I do agree with you about the "bullied become the bullies" problem, and you could expand that phenomenon even to things like the Columbine shooting, I suspect. This is a fascinating discussion that's probably well beyond the scope of this blog post, unfortunately (and way off-topic).
Agreed - having studied american studies at university - i found it rather bizarre that i "knew" america better than many of those i met during my 6 months in sunny san diego - however we're getting off topic...
What does it take for a company to get on the Recommended List?
What do you look for? Impressive Client List? Interactions with SEOmoz? Conference panel appearances? An authoritative blog?
And along with that - how often to do you add new companies to the list?
Well I can safely say that getting various members of the Moz drunk on more than one occasion seems to have no impact. It's a disgrace if you ask me.
I don't usually mind or complain about thumbs down... but this was simply a question. I mean... really?
Vin - take it as a compliment, it's the only way...
I don't usually mind or complain about thumbs down... but this was simply a question. I mean... really? Vin, I share your pain, brother. I once received a thumbs down. In order to help you through this difficult time, I have given you a thumbs up on all your comments on this page. My thoughts are with you. God bless. - Darren
*Finally a chance to ask* Why the aversion towards the nickname Randy? It just SOUNDS better than 'just Rand', don't you think?
On a more serious note: How is SEOmoz' vision towards the future in terms of expanding the business? Are there perhaps plans for another website?
Last but not least: did you actually meet Mystery_guest through SEOmoz? I can't possibly imagine her face seeing a PM in her inbox in which you are asking her out for a date :D
How Rand lucked into finding Mystery Guest can be found on this page about 20% of the way down (or ctrl-f "public bus" is easier).
he he he - just for those too lazy to check Vins link:
"The details escape me now. I vaguely remember blinding white light, the sweet smell of lavender, and angels singing. Or maybe it was Rivers Cuomo." - Mystery Guest
He he he - can you imagine Rand emailing a mozzer for a date? lol.
btw - Note to all -
I is a dude - stop using PM to flirt. If you insist on flirting - send your PMs to either Seanita or Brentana. They Love to Flirt.
Yes ofcourse!
He'd send a PM titled something like "Free trips around the world!". Which is a catchy title, advised by some Digg specialist in his network.
Maybe add some referrals by Rebecca and ofcourse his wingchick Jane. Add that nice picture with his backpack and suit next to the Opera building to show his (takes a deep breath) style, cash, juvinality, expertise and, ofcourse, beard. The whole package!
I'd convert if I were MG!
PS: I should write a blog about this! 'Landing a Date', on how to maximize the conversion rate for an online dating profile!
Well since I always like a few questions that might also prompt a response or two from our favorite spam cop as well....
- what do you think will be the biggest curve ball (challenge, surprise, etc.) thrown by Google this year?
- and if you could ask our friends at Google for one thing this year (that they also might conceivably do), what would it be?
Thanks for what will no doubt be another interesting Q&A session.
See you at SMX.
Do you think SEO has a good future or not? Do you think there will be SEO for the next 15 years?
It seems every designer these days are calling themselve "SEO" - isn't the market becoming saturated since everyone is calling themselve an SEO?
When you post a thread in any forum about "I need an SEO" . The response you get is a "it's easy, learn it yourself" - is it really that easy? whats the point of being an SEO then?
Do you think for the next 10 years SEO would be a good paying job?
Thanks Rand!
regards,
Zafar Ahmed - SEO Pakistan
Do you use the word "Howdy" in real life as much as in Whiteboard Friday videos? ;)
Do you think search engine algorithms might move away from inbound links as their key measurement of a site's relevance? (Eg, towards usage data?) How might this affect SEO?
1. Do you manage PPC campaigns for your clients or only focus on SEO?
2. When are you going to update a team photo in your About section?
if you scuff up your fresh kicks do you
a) die a little inside
b) shake it off it only adds character
c) clean them ASAP
d) try and figure out where to buy a new pair
How is it possible that you look so happy in EVERY Witheboard Friday? Tell us the truth: are you a robot?
I've noticed that a lot of SEO consultants don't have a solid, up-to-date knowledge of subdomains.
Would you consider doing a blog post or Whiteboard Friday subdomains and SEO?
Some possible areas to cover might be: how search engines treat subdomains, how to optimize, best practices, mistakes, etc.
perhaps (and i may have missed a certain Distilled post (i'll edit this late for the link Will and Ciaran!) on internationalization!) however i think it's valid to give a post to this subject
I think the post you mean is this one. Please note though, I don't work with Will - my current employers might get annoyed!
;)
darn it ciaran - your surgically attached to moz! yeah knew your from seperate companies - in fact you met some of my colleagues at the international search summit - tho i couldnt attend as unravelling huge seo problem!
Actually Jane pinged me about this one!
Great question. I ditto that.
Rand, When I first joined YOUmoz, I had some misconceptions about how to rank, and it resulted in some very poor rankings. I have since made several changes that should have improved my position, but they haven't had any effect. Is it possible that I've been hit with some kind of over-optimization penalty?
You're outranking oilman, Darren. You must be doing something right ;)
Pleeeease. I taught Oilman everything he knows. BTW... my Moz points went from -55 to 110 this past month. Does that qualify me for a month of free Pro member access?
Don't worry, Darren. My rank hasn't been updated for a while... We need to be patient and file a SEOmoz Reconsideration Request.
100!!
Sorry, that's a habit from a past forum life :)
Something that I have always wondered is where does SEO start and finish? Analytics, linkbaiting, keyword research, on-page, off-page, link building all under one hat (whether black or white or grey) with a metric ton and a half of other skills...
Where do you draw the distinctions?
Or is it much more a case of one job description, many expert areas?
I know that these are actually 3 questions but I'm an inquisitive beggar.
(also my apologies for the double post, impatient as well as inquisitive)
To answer your question: SEO never ends, think of it like a marathon not a 50 yard dash. I would but analytics review, content production and networking as key ongoing SEO tasks for the long term.
-Dal
Does SEOmoz have so called "traditional" comapanies as clients? I mean companies whose line of work is entirely based off line (construction firms for example).
What would you do if you were aproaced by such a company and the only form of promotion done for the site is a URL writtned on their business cards? What would a basic promotional plan look like - article syndication with niche sites, directories/link exchange, blog??
I see blogs for almost all niches. I do understand that a blog is a great way to comunicate with your customers but is is really a salution for all business models and all problems the way a lot of people out there claim it to be? Some suggest a blog even before they know what your product/service is, a "solve it all salution", which is a bit hard for me to understand...
I am about to speak at my first conference in a few days. I think I will presenting to around 50 to 100 people on SEO.
What advice would you give a first time speaker?
My advice is not to drink too much water before you speak. :-D Good luck!!
I'd disagree - it's easier to hold something in than it is to have your throat go totally dry. During a 40 min presentation I can drink up to 1l of water.
Wear a tomato shield.
Don't present before someone who's come armed with a shockingly captivating viral video ;)
he he he Jane I wonder how many people understood that Joke? Ciaran - Janes still sore ;)
Admittedly it was good - but your limo wasnt too bad either ;)
PM if you want the only place that still has the wonder which is the Wonderbra Gorilla spoof..... or just ask Jane for the file, as she was kind enough to download it for this technophobic old man...
Really sad that I still have it on my computer.
Hmm.. I'd say one of the most interesting questions facing us today (beyond the beard question) is how SEO will become a mature industry. From discussions over the various forums, conferences and sites that people prefer or have loyalty to - unto whether any "official" bodies exist for SEO qualifications... Where do you see the future of SEO - will we merge with PPC, Social and Brand marketing online? Or will these become strictly silo'd professions?
Beyond that... my personal one would be... where did the 'moz name come from? and will distilled play cricket with moz next time there over? or would moz insist on some strange new fangled game like baseball?!
Edit: Another one related to Distilled - now that your spreading your wings internationally- do you see the pro tools changing? (juicy link finder being able to find links in .de .pl .us .co.uk etc depending on choice)
From an SEO perspective what are the most important technical aspects to have in mind when building, optimizing, promoting and tracking a Site.
Hi Rand
Couple of questions:
What are the main reasons for SEOmoz success in your opinion?
Any regrets or things you'd wished you'd done differently...
Hi Randfish,
Some websites improve their ranking by using Blackhat SEO techniques. How do I identify whether my site has been promoted by ethical SEO techniques or unethical SEO techniques?
Though the question is not for me, i am tempted to answer this. there are 2 options
1) Wait till you are really out of SERP to know that they used bad practices.
2) Educate yourself and ask them valid questions before choosing them and all the way till end.
Sorry Rand, I took it.
Apologies AjiNMC - its not that simple - as a few may know I've been looking at SEO issues and they're not that simple & you cannot wait till your out of SERP's as you'll be out of work!!!
- whether caused by developers or agrencies - lets just say a lot of money has been spent and its taken myself and a few valuable members of the moz community to help unravel them- and 2) b*llshit is a funny game played very well by salesmen occasionally...
What i'm saying is that actually - LinkGuru has a very valid question - IF your a newcomer to a site, what best ways to uncover blackhat - or - dubious/incomplete SEO work on your site?
Considering how many companies offer seo services - how best for client side companies/workers to avoid them? (i'm fairly happy going to some - but for the rest of client side people!)
with the actual situation regarding the search engine world,
do you think that :
1. nobody will catch up with Google's advance and domination (let's say for at least for the next 5 years) ?
2. Google will dictate more and more its rules, and therefore, will end up controlling how the web will be build ?
3. the money invested into SEM will make Google still number one for the next 20 years ?
When will SEO Moz be franchising ;)
Obama or Her......
Where did my Pro Member badge go?
It's nice to be recognized as a fully "voted with wallet" person which coincided with Her Royal Highness Sarah saving my year and rear ;)
Once your response is indented once or twice, your avatar loses the PRO Member badge. It still appears for unthreaded comments. :)
As someone who is essentially a knowledge worker, have you found it hard to delegate what you do, especially with the recent, rapid expansion? I went through a similar expansion from a company of 2 to 15, and had to beat myself over the head to delegate. It's hard to shake that belief that you can do it better yourself, no matter how much you like and trust your employees.
My question is "If you were going to offer Local SEO services, what business model would you choose?"
Or in other words, what do you think is the best way to market SEO services to the growing local search market?
(I like the beard)
Kel
Do you think there would be any financial benefit for all of the SEOmoz staff to work remote? Cut down on office expenses?
Have you ever used blackhat techniques in order to improve your client's ranking ? and which one ? think hard...
I know I'm late, but I have to ask: You were born in the hometown of "Phantom" Dan Federici of the E Street Band, Fleminton, NJ, ... are you a Springsteen fan?
Does SEOmoz have any super secret under the rader SE Spam 2.0 projects that you run internally to test the current search engine algo?
Or a related question to the other mozzers... on your side/personal projects - do you do any blackhat stuff?
what and let Matt C know ;P he does cruise by here occasionally - probably has google alerts for "Blackhat SEO" set up too....
The first rule of SPAM CLUB is "thou shall not post about SPAM CLUB".
• SEOmoz's History
Can you give any insights as to how much you charged and how when you first got off the ground? I think some of this type of insight might help some newbie’s out there.
• Our Venture Capital Investment & Future Plans
Are you open to being pitched on concept ideas that are just in the planning stages?
• SEO Industry/Politics
You seem pretty laid back. Do you really ever get bent out of shape at colleagues?
• My Personal Life or Opinions
You don’t seem like the sports type. Do you follow any sports or teams?
Yes. He has the "punishment cage" he forces insubordinate employees to work from for a week. I just got out. My neck is stiff.
Regarding the sports question, he is a big Seahawks fan.
Yes they got robbed by the refs and Steelers a few years back.
Yeah, I have never seen offensive pass interference in the end zone in the Super Bowl quite like that.
Side Note: Coach Holmgren was the first coach ever to critasize a official call and not get fined so I believe some of the NFL official believed that it was warranted after reviewing the tapes.
GO SEAHAKWS - ITS TIME TO BRING HOME THE CHAMPIONSHIP
What are some ways an individual business owner slash consultant (an SEO) might go about finding and merging with other individuals or organizations? If a single individual were hired by an agency like yours with clients on retainer prior to employment, what should be done with those clients?
How might a blogger attend a conference or event as PRESS?
About SEO standards. I can only expect there to be an organization coming forward and offering "verification" or other endorsement for search engine competancy, much like the ASE in the automotive industry certifying technicians. Who do you think that might be when it happens, and what are some things preventing me from doing it right now, how might I overcome them, and etc...?
Regarding the press thing, just email the organiser (or PR company) and give examples of stuff you've blogged. The worst thing they can do is say no.
Hopefully someone else asked this and you will take care of it, but we’ve been noticing a fairly large discrepancy between our SERP’s from AOL and Google for the same keywords. We were under the impression that AOL served up Google results, but something is definitely not matching up like it used to.
Can you shed any light here?
Oh seems I am lil late to this Q-A confrence, My Question -
When will Google empower webmasters to drop unwanted back links from their webmaster central account which they think may hamper their trust rank? Right now you can spoil any one's link profile by generating automated crap links on sites with explicit content. Is there any way a webmaster can shield his site from this?
- Pulkit
Hello, I was just a little curious how you interact with other SEO companies and if you’re willing to talk more joint ventures?
Hi, What do you think is the best place to get a certification in SEO?
Are you planning on introducing tutorials or case studies as educational tools?
Hi Rand(y - for Thetjo).
I understand the importance of social media and creating and nurturing online community groups where people are sharing knowledge, experience, and just plain participating. This, I understand, produces what I call "GroupLink" - if this term is not new to seo, please someone correct me, else I coined it ;P
I sit down with clients who want the bennies of seo but don't want to participate in the online arenas. What would you tell them?
For the record if we're voting on whether Randy is an acceptable nickname for Rand (and I hope we're not) then I vote NO.
What do you think the impact of Universal/Blended search will be to the SEO industry/clients?
Do you think a Yahoo/Microsoft search merger is a good thing for SEOs? (Pros/Cons)
Do you think there will ever be a point when the SEO market will be saturated? Where search marketing is no longer a distinct advantage and is just a baseline marketing tactic (i.e. 80% of search queries have been optimized for search, making it extremely hard to rank...)
If you were an A-Team character, which one would you be? ...You don't really need to answer this one, I'd think you'd want to be Hannibal Smith.
I'm not sure if this is the kind of question that's appropriate here, but thought I throw it out there. I have looked long and hard for an answer to this, but haven't yet come up with an authoritative answer.
Does ranking well on a country specific Search Engine (like Google.ca) necessarily mean you will eventually rank well in Google.com? I'm not talking about when you search in 'pages from Canada', but when you perform a general search for non-location-based information.
As an aspiring SEO, this is obviously critical for me to figure out. Hopefully someone can point me in the right direction!
My question is "If you were going to offer Local SEO services, what business model would you choose?"
Or in other words, what do you think is the best way to market SEO services to the growing local search market?

Apart from friday whiteboards, what will you do if next President bans SEO/SEM activities :) ?
It's already friday. When can we expect all the answers?
Just published them here - sorry about the delay.
Oh, I forgot to ask. Are you married? or have a girlfriend?
thats not a hard one to answer. See....
