I've gotten a few emails asking if I'd be willing to do a blog post thread similar to Shoemoney's
Ask Questions &
Get Answers series. I've actually been meaning to put this up earlier, but keep running into other posts I'd like to author.
So, today, feel free to leave any questions in the comments below regarding:
- SEOmoz's Business
- The Website
- Anything to do with SEO or Internet Marketing in General
- My Background or Personal Life
- Other mozzers
I can't promise that I'll tackle every question, and I may try to request clarifications in the comments. My goal would be to close this thread sometime tomorrow night and answer the questions then, for release on Friday.
If Vanessa joins SEOmoz as an outside board member (You go girl!), do you have to convert the video studio into a throne room where she can hold audiences?
Mozzers go to a lot of different conferences. What is your team's favorite item in the SkyMall catalog?
Outside of Seattle, what is your favorite time zone and how would you use social media optimization to make it rule the world?
Lactose free, 2% or whole?
I spend most of my time in the

[ ] Sitting Position
[ ] Horizontal Position

Hey Rand,
Since you are clearly one of the most authoratative minds in the SEO world right now, I have a question for you.
QUESTION: If someone came to you and didn't give you any details on the site (the type, industry, so on) and you had to point 6 links to it, what would those 6 links be and why?
Thanks Rand!
Scott
This is just going to sound like the dorkiest, fan-girl, People-magazine-reader type question, but: How did you and Mystery Guest meet?
I was going to ask this also!
How do you feel that SEOMoz relies so much on you?
If you didn't have SEOMoz but had the SEO/SEM knowledge and had to start fresh with $1000 - What would you do? Where would the money go?
:)
Another excellent question!
I feel this is the million dollar question to ask of ALL A-list Bloggers (Shoe, Darren, etc.).
Now that is darned good question. Not just the usual "what would you do different," but "if you were starting completely over, what would you do?"
...Really hoping you answer this one.
Hi,
there was a similar question doing the rounds a while back, but it was for even less money
SEO/SEM on $100
loads of good stuff there.
Hi Rand... I have to put a paid links question your way, as it's a bit of a bug bear of mine (and I know I'm not alone). Lots of SEOs seem to have succumbed to what Jim Boykin calls the "blue koolaid", and there are other SEOs who know full well that paid links work but are happy to purpetuate the myth that they'll destroy your rankings as it's not a technique that they're willing to employ. I'm not going to ask you outright if you use them (hello Mr Cutts!) but my question is;
Do you think it is possible to rank for *competitive* search terms using only freely acquired links? If so, where would be your top spots for getting the best free links?
Hello Rand,
I have been working for a small e-com design/dev group for a year now, and I have just recently came to the conclusion that they will not be ready for a proactive SEO dept within their ranks. I mean, hey...why take a proactive approach to SEO/SEM when engaging the client, when you can charge them out the wazoo later.
As this does not match my model for honest and proactive business, I have decided to bail. : ) I am thinking about stepping out and doing this on my own on a consultant basis.
Do you have any adivce for a new SEO consultant?
I am being stupid, and should I find another real job? : )
Is there a market for upfront and honest SEOs focusing on natural/organic results based on in depth keyword analysis and market research? I do not want to be in the business of getting clients based on false expectations.
THANKS FOR THIS OPPORTUNITY!!!
I've been putting off asking this for almost a year now, but at the risk of losing all credibility and seeing my rankings plummet, here it goes:
What exactly is a "moz"?
Pete,
You've been around long enough to know that the Moz community is cool enough to answer basic questions without flaming or putting down.
Besides, everyone knows that moz means banana. ;)
Excellent. That actually answers another previously unspeakable question: "what kind of name is Fishkin?". Apparently, it's Kurdish ;)
One of these days, the MozPoint gods are going to strike me down.
I'm wondering about your shift from SEO/SEM service provider to a central educational and social hub for search marketings and the drive behind it.
Did it have anything to do with the fact that providing SEO/SEM services is such a difficult business model to tackle effectively (and a shaky one when somewhat reliant on corporations like Google and Yahoo!)? I'm sure you were doing okay with providing SEO services, but you've obviously moved towards a model more in line with Brian Clark's new Teaching Sells theory - kudos for being ahead of the curve on that one!
In other words, did you see running an educational/social media hub as a better opportunity and business model than providing SEO services?
And in broader terms: do you think SEO/SEM services as a business model is inherently flawed or at least very difficult in terms of achieving true scalability and growth?
Other than your wedding, what are you most excited about in the next year?
Finally consummating the relationship, I bet. ;)
You owe me a drink to replace the one I just snorted through my nose.
:)
Geraldine I thought you were waiting for your wedding night
Are you earning your money only by SEO for customers? Or you have other sites with advertising to make money online? If yes, what sites?
I know about this one but there may be others. If so, I'd be interested to see them as well.
Randall - that's actually a site belonging to a client of ours, and I believe we're no longer technically under contract with them. Expect to see the names and authors change sometime soon.
Regarding the original question - our primary income and business model is now the premium content section of SEOmoz itself, though we are still engaging with client work as well on a very limited basis.
Oh.
On the business side: How many developers do you anticipate being able to hire as a result of your VC funding, and what do you think the pace of new tool development will be?
How do you find such amazing people to work for you? Is Craigslist really THAT good? How many candidates do you interview before making a hiring decision?
On the personal side: Is there a single moment or event you can point to when your profile in the industry tipped into one of the highest echelon of SEOs? Or was it just a combination of factors?
1 - How many people do you plan to take on over the next few years? Is there some kind of timeline you've got planned?
2 - Do you outsource any of your work, or is it all kept in-house?
3 - Will SEOmoz go international (in terms of having offices n other countries)
4 - Why do you think the US is so far ahead of the rest of the world in terms of the level of development in the online marketing sphere?
5 - What do you think will be the biggest changes over the next 12 months?
6 - Looking back on the growth of SEOmoz thusfar, is there anything you'd have done differently, and why?
Hi Rand and the moz gang,
1) I'd love to know how you started marketing SEOmoz and your services when you first started:
2) Did you and Gillian finance the company with your own money when you first started?Hope the above questions aren't too prying, but just curious from another (relatively new) business owner's point of view.
Cheers
Hi Rand -
My question: What are 5 of the most successful ways SEOmoz has attracted new SEO business, besides SEOmoz blog?
Thanks! - Adam
What are some best practices when trying to acquire backlinks from quality, relevant sites? Is there a certain tone you should have in the email letter, certain things you shouldn't bring up, certain things you should etc...
Thanks!
What, if anything, do you hear from the ex-mozzers regarding their post-moz lives?
I've typically read that Google is about 50% of the search traffic. Recently I've seen it higher than that including something you wrote. Even so it seems that it's not much above 70%. On my site I'm seeing about 99% from Google. What factors would cause that and what things can be done to get traffic from the other search engines?
You're a brave man, Mr. Fishkin.
Something I've always wondered, given my own work in usability and interest in crossover issues in usability and SEO: What made you decide to transition from usability to SEM, and how did you go about landing your first few SEM clients?
Alright - a handful of my questions have already been asked (where did you and Mystery Guest meet?, if you lost everything except for your knowledge - what would you do to start over?) so I only have two big questions/topics left:
Can you tell me the SEO benefit or penalties of domain and subdomain relationships?
(I heard bad domains can penalize subdomains but not the other way around? Since they are treated as individual websites, is there any other benefits - like if you have 1000 links to a subdomain, does it have any effect on the root domain? can you elaborate on any of this?)
And ...
Did you ever find out why Google tanked your "recommended" page? And if you found out it was because of something specific one of your listed vendors did - would you out them and tell us what happened?
Vingold,
You beat m eto the question on domain/sub-domain relationships. Looking forward to the answer.
BTW Vingold, when are you putting up another post on youmoz?
having read some of the Q&A in certain varied topics, it appears moz is strong in some areas and not as strong in others. If you are focusing on MOZ premium membership as the primary source of revenues then I think you owe it to yourself and members to get rigourously strong across the board on as many issues as possible.
Are you doing a self examination with regard to moz strengths and weaknesses? If so how? If you identify weaknesses how are you addressing them to get stronger?
Is there a board at moz that oversees and advises with respect to growing the company and maintaining quality that contributes to growth?
btw: best wishes with your upcoming marriage, consumating the marriage, as mystery guest revealed ;) and growing the business.
Dave
Hey folks,
My question isn't limited to just Rand answering it but here goes....
I'm just wondering what the consensus is on keywords in subdomains and it's value in the SERPs. We have a client that wants to have a subdomain as thier main URL (i.e. widget.yoursite.com) and I'm not convinced it's going to help them but I might be wrong....
p.s. Hope I'm not too late to ask a question here.
Cheers,
Jeff
For ranking? For branding?
You can be extremly successful even with del. as a subdomain ;)
Hi Rand, & Good Morning !
This made my day , so here goes,
So, today, feel free to leave any questions in the comments below regarding:
Where do you see seo moz being in 2 years ?
what is your Ultimate goal even if it may seem impossible to reach with the moz?
Since you are gettig busier and busier everyday, do you Rand promise to stick around with you members and not desert us,
The reason I ask is because more and more I see people grow and then forget who got them there, so will you always stay involved?
Do you see seo becoming more complicated in the future, becoming easier in the future , or simply becoming non existentMy Background or Personal LifeOh - hehe, Hmmm......whats your favorite meal for each part of the day I.e. breakfest , lunch dinner?
Since you are a work a holic , do you shower less like I do , because your work passion is stronger then your urge to shower, or is that only me?
Who can you recommend me to email all the time instead of you>......lol j/k :)
Sorry I harrass you so much , and don't mind the weird questions :)
1. I have noticed the site has been slow to load lately, are there upgrades going on that are causing this?2. Being a premium member I was curious as to what new tools and reports are being developed? Will they be out soon?3. When developing a home page is it better to have the page consist of more static content they variable such as rotating testimonials or top list of current blog posts? I don't want to sacrifice SEO for some flashy look and feel.
What I've always wanted to ask you, or what I'd love to see you do a blog post about:
What does it take to be a great SEO? What are the personality traits and skills that separate the good SEOs from the great ones?
Hi Rand,
Let's say I have $5,000.00 available to spend on SEO. It's not enough to hire you guys, but what or whom would you recommend to spend the money on (for SEO of course ;))?
What can we do SEO-wise as the small guy not able to afford the big guns, but not being savvy enough or with the time to do SEO?
Thanks.
Christoph
Hi Rand,
I am very new to SEO, and have a very basic question. Is there a limit or any negative implications for having too many meta keywords in a page?
I'm in the process of reading your Beginner's Guide to SEO and looking forward to the updated version. Thanks for keeping it free!
[columbo voice] just one more thing...[/columbo voice]
do you have a GUI to show who is thumbing up and down what? and do you ever sneak a peak?
This question is inspired by what seems to be people thumbing down automatically anything that is not written by Rand himself. I'd love to see the stats on this kind fo things
To put it delicately, Big Brother is Watching You...
Wow - so much for anonymity.
Well, honestly it's a bit naive to think that we can't see who's thumbing what up and down, seeing as how we built the damn thing. But no, we don't have an employee here whose sole job is to monitor thumbs and craft a list of "meanies" who thumb down Mozzers.
So, if I just gave you a hypothetical thumbs down somewhere, you wouldn't hunt me down and throw a thumbs down my way?
Cool! ;)
Any other mozzers with a vengence streak I should be aware of?
I don't mind the occasional thumbs down--it's the "spite" thumbs down I don't particuarly like (where someone will thumb down every post and/or comment one of us makes because he or she seems to have some sort of personal vendetta against us).
Hey, who thumbed that down?
:-)
I'm onto ya, Rand! ;)
Well, I have to say I'm a little insulted. I don't think I'm particularly naive or deserve to be slandered as such.
The way you phrased your response ("Big Brother is watching") I assumed you or someone else on the SEOmoz staff was actively reviewing thumbs downs and taking notes.
Of course you have the ability to see who is doing what - necessary measures for control to prevent artificial thumbs ups to build moz points as well as to prevent negative thumbs down spamming.
But I guess I'll just keep my mouth shut next time.
Sorry, BigTequila, I didn't mean it was naive of you, just in general, as we've had several members in the past wonder if we're able to see thumb activity. My Big Brother reference was meant to be facetious and hint that yes, we can see thumb activity; however, we don't look at them regularly, nor do we actively track who thumbs up/down who the most.
My apologies--I didn't mean to offend you.
It's alright - no harm no foul. I think I misread your "Big Brother" comment. My mistake.
Good question!! Perhaps SEOmoz should roll out a a "diggspy" like tool, with the names of the innocent (or at least me!) protected. It would show all the thumbs being flung on the blog and the site in real time with links to the post and/or comment.
I'd be interested in a general behind-the-scenes look as well. I'm always interested in how things operate and the people that operate them.
1. Who is your favorite Transformer?
2. What is your favorite linkbait headline on SEOmoz
3. What advice would you give college students seeking to enter the search marketing industry
4. What TV (if any) do you watch?
5. What movie is a guilty viewing pleasure (stolen from R.Kelley)
Bonus: When is shor releasing his Premium guide?
Good question!
<puppy eyes>
Rand, can I pretty please have a signed photograph?
</puppy eyes>
I'm wondering now if Rand is ever going to get to these. Not only did scores of mozzers post comments here, but many asked 4-5 questions in one comment.
Rand- You have taken on quite a task. I wish you luck. You might want to start at the top (my question is at the top :) ).
Hello,
Is is possible to lose rankings after adding your website to google local business?
My situation is like this: I was ranking pretty good for "keyword A","keyword B", "keyword C" where A, B and C are city names.
A is the city in which I live, B and C are nearby cities.
Shortly after submitting my business to google local, I was ranking very low for "keyword B" and "keyword C" but my rankings for "keyword A" have improved.
Thanks,
Mike
Do you think there is a future for SEO consultants?
At the end of the day, the overwhelming majority of SEO work today seems to be design and information architecture related - improper title & meta tagging, not alt content for images and rich media, non-descrpitive URLs, no sitemap, etc...
As the other areas of net development get more mature, Good SEO practices should ultimately become embeded in the role of each department - Copywriters always creating SEO friendly Title tags and meta tags in addition to their normal copy, programmers always using friendly URLs, etc...
So, when all new CMS systems and other pieces of online software are more or less SEO compliant off the shelf:
where do you see the professional search engine optimization firm moving to? Moreso Social media optimization and Link building than on-site? Conversion funnel analysis? Usability? Will they even be considered search engine optimization firms anymore, or just online marketing consultants?
Dear sir,
As per latest PR update i have seen some of subdomain increased its pr. but still there are no change in main index ranking.
its affects ranking?, coz still date there are no moments in ranking algoridhm.
Whoa, many great questions, can not wait to see your answers :)
This is not a question but regarind your web page: Ranking Factors V2 It would be nice to make a url from where all comments of contributors would be shown, so one does not have to click on "Show the rest of the comments" for each ranking factor...I think it would be more user friendly.
best regards,Alex
I have two questions which might seem of the newbie variety: if pagerank is a set value for each page, why would you link out to other sites if that drains PR away from your own site? I know that PR hoarding is seen as a bad thing - obviously in terms of natural site development it doesnt make sense, but in terms of increasing pagerank it does. Or does it?
Also, why is it so much harder to get ranked for long tail keywords in Yahoo than in Google (or is it just me)?
Id like to know if there are an international standard that says if my bounce rate is within the normal range , or it is too bad and need improvment?
Just curious....when will you be answering these questions :)
I'm going to try tackling them a few dozen at a time next week while I'm in Stockholm :)
Where will you publish your answers?
Rand answered some of the questions in this post. He'll answer more in a follow up post.
Might be a bit too late but I am really curious about this question.
If you would be in an early stage of SEOmoz and you'd have a few big possible customers on the hand. Who all have the pockets full of money.
They are not really into SEO till now... What would you to
a) make them clear that they need your service
b) make them use your service continiously
Considering that you own both the .com and .org extensions for SEOMOZ and are re-directing the .com to .org, I'm wondering if there was a marketing logic behind using .org as the primary - i.e. giving the impression of a not for profit community to lure visitors in, and then work toward moving them to a premium subscription?
The reason I ask is that in retrospect, I first visited the site for that very reason - thinking a .org wouldn't be looking to sell me anything.
Low and behold, I was so impressed with what you had to offer that I personally elected for premium subscription the first time I visited.
Rand,
I love your blog and I look forward to learning more and more each day!
I have a client who has two domains indexed and pointing to the exact same site. One is a third level domain which they do not want included in the index. We are unable to do a 301 redirect. How do we go about getting these pages out of Google and Yahoo's indices?
Thank you!
Amy
I definitely give this post a thumbs up!
And for starters, can someone please tell me, if I transfer my domain to a new host, is this as bad as transferring the ownership of the domain???
Thanks!
I've got some questions on the business/organizational side of SEOmoz.
I read in one of your other blogs about the premium membership becoming the major source of revenue for SEOmoz. Rand, who do you see as your major competitors in this "new" education market and why? What is your competitive advantage?
Does SEOmoz have an Internal Code of Ethics, something written that declares what employees will or will not do when it comes to SEO or dealing with clients? What is in your code of ethics?
What are some major ethical "gray areas" (blackhat v. whitehat or choosing which clients to take etc.) that you and your employees encounter while doing SEO or working for clients? How do you handle those situations? How do you choose what is ethical and what is not?
How do you and your employees hold each other accountable when it comes to ethics and ethical dilemmas?
Have the steps you've taken to ensure an ethical company impacted employee behavior? How so?
What do you do to promote ethical policies (practices) both internally at SEOmoz and Globally (this website, conferences, speaking opportunities).
I'm a college student writing a paper on organizational ethics and chose SEOmoz as the company to examine. Any insight you can provide would be greatly appreciated.
~Bstrong
Coolness. 2 quick questions...
1. What strategies would you use for a site that has mainly video content?
2. Are you ever gonna approve my friend request on facebook??
Thanks gang!
oH oH,
I have one other question, And I rather have this one answered ,
what happened to darren?
https://www.problogger.net/archives/2007/10/24/problogger-pagerank-4/
Remeber you said Rand " Me & Matt have a "Beautiful" relationship
Qucik call, him and get that answer for me :)
Hi Rand. Thanks for offering to answer our questions!
There seems to be conflicting information out there about the value of the description meta tag. There is no doubt that a well written description is valuable to entice searchers to click on your listings. Many other SEO sources also describe the importance of ensuring the content in your description tag is relevant to the page content. These sources advocate keyword relevancy between the title, the description tag, and page content to improve rankings. This would indicate that the search engine algorithms actually factor this in when ranking a site. In my experience, keyword relevancy does seem to have a positive effect on rankings. What is your opinion on this?
Is it a good idea to create a page listing sites that link to you, but that search engines haven't found yet? (either on the site, or a different domain)
I'm reading the original Beginner's Guide, and have come to the part about visitor tracking. My website does indeed allow me to see what browser people are using and what time they visit, but I don't understand how that information is useful. You do not expand on this point in the original Beginner's Guide, but I hope you will do so, either in response to this question or in the updated Beginner's Guide. In fact, general information about how to use visitor tracking data would be very useful. Do I say to myself, "Ah, the people who come here really love pocket charts -- those should be my featured product this month" or do I say, "People don't find us when they search for playground equipment -- I'd better get onto that"?
Hi Rand,
It is great you decided to do something like this. I have some questions regarding multilingual websites:
1. I noticed that most of the translated pages on our site have no page rank (main version has PR3-5) and suspect that some of them are in Supplemental index. Yes, these pages are poorly interlinked and we are working on it, but will this be enough? For the other languages we use parameters (example ...?Lng=fr). and not subdomains/directories (I am not a web developer so I don't know if I expalin this corectly but hope you undertood me)
2. We have the site translated in several languages and have also bought the domains for these languages (oursite.ru, oursite.pl etc) and set them as aliases to the main site (oursite.com). We want to increase our visibility in the other languages and I was wandering which will be the better course of action (a) promote the other domains, (b) promote the transleted pages on the main .com domain?
Thanks for all the help you and all the mozzers provide. SEOmoz is a great source of information and makes the life of people like me, who just recently started exploring the realm of SEO, a whole lot easier.
here are my questions:
1) my site gets 25-50 unique users, I have tried guest posting but that is hard to get, and entering into blog search enginees. Could my blog just suck?
2) do you use a plugin for the e-mail this feature, if so which one
This December should I attend Pubcon or SES?
If you want to meet and greet the mozzers, go to Pubcon.
The problem with those shows is that they are so dam expensive to the little guy.
I know I am to poor to go to them,
You can try and register as press for SES Chicago, in which case they'll give you a free conference pass so that you can cover the event. You still have to pay for airfare and lodging, but at least the conference cost is comp'd.
Oh Rebecca , thats a sweet Idea :)
Right ON!
Not that it helps with the overall expense, but even living in Chicago, I found that Pubcon + airfare+ hotel was still cheaper than SES registration this year. I'm not sure how they're justifying the pricetag with so many defectors due to the scheduling conflict.
If you get to know a few people in show management, you can always try volunteering. I used to work in the tradeshow biz, and events always need help, especially from people who are tech-savvy.
Agreed, as a PubCon virgin this year, I was surprised at how cheap it was compared to SMX & SES events. All in, registration ($699 early bird), R/T airfare from the Bay Area ($108 on Southwest), 4 nights lodging ($240...OK, so I'm not staying at the Wynn) = a little more than $1000.
Volunteer? Hmm... actually never thought about it. Sounds like a good option for a few events where I'd care more about the after parties and networking than the sessions and exhibits themselves. Pubcon, though, is a must. Paying for the full effect there. And a chance to meet Craig Newmark! Oh my heart swoons.
Pubcon FTW, Homie.
Wow! I can ask you something!
Which do you think is the most important aspect of SEO?
1. On page optimization
2. Link bait
3. Social Media
4. Press Releases
5. Blogging about Matt Cutts
also
What do you think about a SEO tool that does everything. You plug in the website address and wanted keywords and it tells you what to do onpage and offpage? Is something like this in the works, or would that make it too easy?
(edited for crazy lines running together)
I like TMS' book question above - nice one.
My other questions (in no particular order, don't feel like you have to answer them all - just cherry pick interesting ones):
Do you ever write code? When was the last time / what did you write?
In terms of size (if not blog audience, sadly), we are at a place you guys were not too long ago. What one lesson do you wish you had known that you have learnt on the way from where we are to where you are?
Whisky or brandy?
Wine or beer?
Champagne or cocktail?
There are right answers to the multiple-choice questions (except the champagne one).
That's all for now. Enjoy.
>>Do you ever write code? When was the last time / what did you write?
I bet is was a secret message/love note to Mystery Guest. Maybe he did it by using lemon juice as invisibe ink.
Hey Rand,
Do MozPoints mean anything to the SEOmoz staff (ie. Do you look at the top 50 mozzers as a source of useful contacts, people to look-out for at conferences, or start reading their blogs based on their interaction in the community) or are they there mainly to encourage people to contribute and bring greater value to SEOmoz as a whole?
Thanks
I want to see more information about the page rank of the website, although the it have been discussed time andtim. :)
hope I'm not too late on this...
My question:
Whats the most blackhat tactic you have ever used?
also.. a bonus question to solve a dispute between myself and my girlfriend:
Who would win a fight between Ethelfrith the destroyer and Ghengis Khan?
I too realise its a bit late but would like to ask:
Q: Do you think social bookmarking sites should "give" some of that much loved link juice to top rated stories? If the people love the content, then it has to be good right?
Oh man. You open the floor to any questions and I got nuthin ~ PUNT!
I'll just have to wait until you blow it again with outting websites or directories or something, then my questions will flow like hot magma from an awakened Rainier! ;)
Just keep up the great work in the meantime!
Hi Rand,
What do you think will be the next major advancement in Search Engines technology and how will it affect SEO?
Thanks!
Why did you choose the .org version of the domain for your business? Do you expect to switch to .com any time in the foreseeable future?
I have search, and searched the web for a good answer as to why Yahoo search results are so different from Google. I even asked Rand the question before. I scoured the web to find a bunch of people commenting on the following....
Yahoo gives value to different links
Yahoo focuses more on keyword density
Yahoo cares more about W3C
Yahoo is bias towards their advertisers
Dmoz listing is more heavily weighted
etc.
My research and testing has been inconclusive. Rand, don't hold back. What is Yahoo doing that keeps some of my websites from ranking well when they dominate in Google?
Hello Rand,
Can you reflect on the "My Super Proposal" experience?
Todd
