If you've been using SEOmoz's tools for a while, you've likely run across the same challenge we have -- the data rocks, but you have to run a separate tool and report for each aspect of your SEO. That's why, for the past year, we've been building a new platform to house all of the features and functionality of the SEOmoz toolset, and includes the ability to track metrics over time. We call it the SEOmoz "Web App."
It's hard for me to resist making this post nothing but a huge collection of screenshots...
Starting TODAY (right now, in fact!), every PRO member has BETA access to the new web app.
We encourage you to create your first campaign(s), start tracking some rankings, crawling some pages and getting those optimization recommendations. The web app is our first application to automatically track data for any site(s) you care about on an ongoing, consistent basis, and make recommendations based on what we find. Thus, the real value comes after a week or two of tracking, and it gets more valuable, useful and reference worthy over time. One of our big goals was to make this app give back some beautiful screenshots and reports showing your progress in reducing the crawl problems, improving optimization and gaining in the rankings over time.
How it Works
The challenge with doing SEO on sites bigger than a few dozen pages is that no human has time to visit every page on a regular basis and check to make sure nothing is wrong, no opportunities are missed, no errors are present, and no search rankings are being unintentionally forfeited through poor optimization. The web app is designed to solve this by:
#1 - Crawling all the pages on your site every week and identifying potential issues in three categories:
- Errors - like 404s, 500s, missing titles, duplicate content, etc.
- Warnings - such as 302s, overly dynamic URL strings, long title elements, meta refreshes, etc.
- Notices - not problems, per se, but issues you might want to be aware of like 301s, rel=canonical tags, meta robots blocking, etc.
While we love what Google's Webmaster Tools does on this front, we felt there were a lot more issues we wanted to see.
#2 - Tracking Rankings on the keywords you choose and automatically grading the pages that rank in the top 50 for their on-page optimization. It's a simple concept, but a powerful one. Why? Because, we often found that:
- URLs ranking on page 2, 3 or 4 for a keyword phrase could move up dramatically in rankings and traffic with just a bit of keyword tweaking
- Sometimes, SEOs & marketers might not even realize they had a page that was competitive for a keyword, and showing off that potential automatically could make a huge difference
- Tracking rankings can help identify potential causes of rising/falling traffic and give a key baseline for performance, particularly as we add in data like traffic via web analytics, keyword difficulty scores and estimated search volume.
Basic rank tracking is great, but we think there's a lot more you can do with the data when it's integrated with other KPIs and metrics
Tracking competitors simultaneously is helpful for those SEOs who want to keep special tabs on select sites
#3 - On-Page Grading & Recommendations serve as a great companion to rank tracking, enabling easy identification of low hanging fruit (poorly optimized pages that still rank in the top 50 results are often huge opportunities for improved rankings and traffic). We built this feature because:
- It's frustrating to figure out the best practices for on-page optimziation, but our correlation and ranking models work have made some valuable strides that deserve to be shared.
- No one can visit hundreds or thousands of pages and find all the keywords that are suboptimally targeted. The web app (particularly in concert with tip #1 below) can and it will message these with easy-to-parse grades and simple recommendations.
- You can feel confident that the on-page recommendations are consitently updating with best practices. As we learn more through testing/research or as algorithms change (we re-do our ranking models every few months), that information will quickly make its way into the on-page report cards.
An "A"! That's good news. Still missing a few recommendations that might be worth checking out, though.
Aha! Using the keyword in the alt attribute might be a good addition (both for normal web rankings and for image SEO)
#4 - Link Analysis for your site and those of key competitors. This tab is still in progress, but in the future, we plan to integrate all of the link analysis abilities of Open Site Explorer and add historical tracking, competitive SERPs analysis and more.
Much more functionality coming soon
#5 - One Comprehensive System to Rule It All. More so than any single feature, we wanted to begin the process of replicating all the functionality of SEOmoz's PRO tools into a single, integrated platform. You should be able to do all your SEO from one place - the web app. The functionality released today is just a tiny part of what's to come.
Now I can see and access all the sites I care about from one place in my PRO account.
How Does this Affect My PRO Account?
If you're already PRO, think of this as a big, new feature that's ready to start tracking data for you today. None of the old tools, functionality, guides, Q+A, tips, webinars, etc. are going away. We're just adding the web app as a key part of the SEOmoz PRO package.
We are, however, making a few shifts that I think you'll really like.
Previously, PRO membership tiers had limits for how many Linkscape reports they could run. We've scaled up our servers to the point where we can handle pretty hefty quantities of requests, so as of today, we're removing your Linkscape advanced report limits - all PRO members can now run unlimited numbers of Linkscape reports. Q+A remains the same, as does access to all the other tools + content.
Here's the new PRO membership plans:
You may notice we've changed our pricing; however, these prices are for new members only. Existing PRO members will continue to pay what they have in the past, but receive the expanded benefits and privileges we're launching today. It's our way of saying thanks for joining us in the early days. PRO members - you'll get an email soon detailing the improvements/upgrades to your membership.
If you're not yet PRO, we're keeping the PRO price of $79/month available until August 25th (14 days from now). After that, the price will go up to $99/month. If you sign up now (at $79/month), you'll be grandfathered in and won't be subject to future price increases.
And, as always, as PRO membership gets better, you'll get immediate access to new features & upgrades and we'll never raise your price.
5 Quick Tips to Get Started
The web app is certainly designed to be largely self-explanatory and I'm sure many of you have already jumped in and given it a spin. But, for those seeking a few tricks, here's some that we've found in the last few weeks of using it for projects (some in concert with our consulting friends at Distilled).
#1 - Import some of your top referring keywords from your analytics
When I started the SEOmoz campaign, I grabbed our top few hundred keywords that referred traffic and imported them through the manage keywords input box (which kindly accepts CSV, TSV and carriage-return separated inputs).
By exporting my list of top keywords from Google Analytics and pasting them into the web app, I've got easy tracking on tons of keywords I care about, and a chance to find some missed opportunities.
#2 - Find pages that rank in the top 10-30 with low grades (Cs, Ds and Fs)
When my rankings and on-page reports came back, I found tons of pages that got Cs or Ds ranking in position 5-50, ripe for improvement.
Those Cs, Ds and Fs are gonna turn into As and send us a lot more traffic!
The best part is the automation - it's a simple process, but an incredibly tedious one if performed manually. The web app's a lifesaver on that front. Those Cs, Ds and Fs, if improved to As and Bs, will likely bring up rankings, particularly on the less competitive terms and phrases and those where I may have the links I need to rank, but never took the time to do on-page optimization. Editing a few page titles and adding some keywords to content never felt so rewarding.
#3 - Use the "grade any page" easter egg feature
The web app's on-page optimization system will soon be replacing our tired and somewhat rickety term target tool. In the meantime, you can run "one-off" reports through an easter egg feature. Just create the keyword you care about and you can edit the URL field manually to grade any page for any term/phrase:
Notice the highlighted portion in blue in the screenshot - easter egg FTW!
#4 - Apply labels to your keyword groups to separately track relevant data/metrics
Nearly every section of the app allows for filtering based on keyword group, error type, etc. By building smart keyword groups (via the "manage keywords" page) to align with the types of terms/phrases I care about, I can separately build reports showing performance in rankings and on-page optimization for those labels.
#5 - Point out crawl diagnostic issues to a friend or potential client
If your friend has a website with some crawl issues, I'm sure they'd appreciate having that pointed out - you can even export the crawl results to CSV and email it over. Likewise, if you've got clients or managers you're trying to convince to do some SEO fixes, the diagnostic visualization can be very handy to show off the problem.
Sending over this report might just bring your buddy a bit more search traffic (or help you win a new client)!
What's Next?
Oh, believe me - we're just getting warmed up. :-)
Our engineering team is committed to regular updates every few weeks, starting with something big a couple weeks from today. Those updates will add features, fix bugs and help grow this web app into the platform professional SEOs deserve - a system that lets you perform all of the essential tasks of SEO from one place - from building, submitting and managing XML Sitemaps to tracking your ROI from organic keywords through integration with your analytics package to tracking search results in verticals like video, maps/local, news, images, et al. to mapping your crawl data from Webmaster Tools against your indexation of pages receiving search traffic (we've had some good chats with the WM Tools team about integrating their API in cool ways) and much, much more.
We'll be publishing a post this weekend inviting you to vote for features you'd most like to see. That feedback will be used to help prioritize our work, so suggest now, vote on the weekend and you'll see what you want in the app even sooner!
We Need Your Feedback
The web app is the basis for our future plans around providing great SEO software, and we need your help to make it amazing. On every page of the web app, you'll find a feedback tab on the left-hand side of the page. Please click it often and tell us what you found frustrating, what more you want to see, and even what you liked and want more of. Our team reads every one and build priorities based on the most-requested features.
We also know there's going to be bugs at launch. Some early ones we're aware of include:
- Slowness - many of the web app pages take 10-15 seconds or more to load depending on the quantity of keywords, issues or other data involved. We're working to cache much of this in databases for much faster retrieval in the next few weeks.
- Crawl & Rankings Retrieval - your first data will take 5-20 minutes to populate. We do an initial "speed crawl" of 250 pages, but to be respectful of server load issues, we're pretty cautious with our requests. That first hour inside the app after creation may feel a bit empty, but just wait, it gets much better :-)
- On-Page Grades - edge cases, including keywords that are out of order or have odd broad matching aren't perfect yet. We'll be working to fix this and make this experience as seemless as possible.
- Root Domains - currently, campaigns can only be created with single subdomains (e.g. www.seomoz.org, not *.seomoz.org). We're working to make root domains an option as well, so you can track all the pages at mydomain.com, www.mydomain.com, blog.mydomain.com, etc. in one campaign.
- Adding more than 10 Keywords Simultaneously - to help with load as we begin public testing, we'll only collect rankings for the first 10-20 keywords entered immediately (within 10-15 minutes). If you add 50 or 500 keywords at once, we're limiting rankings and on-page checks until your next update date for now.
This isn't just another tool - it's a new approach for SEOmoz - creating an application that uses crawl data, APIs and integrated research to improve your productivity and simplify SEO.
But, we need to be realistic - in this first iteration, we're not just in beta, we're at the nascent stages of the app's potential. What we're launching today is pretty remarkable, and I feel confident that for nearly everyone reading this post, it can help you earn a considerable amount more traffic from the search engines. That said, the future is what we feel best about, particularly since we hope to have your help in the improvement process.
This is very much a BETA launch, but we think you'll enjoy playing around with the app and get a lot of value in return. So, what are you waiting for? Go build a campaign!
p.s. If you'd like to learn more, check out our FREE WEBINAR on the Web App coming up this Friday, August 13th at 10am Pacific - Register here. And you can still sign up for the SEOmoz Tools Training at our Seattle Seminar later this month (we've just added more seats).
What can I say?
That it is so cool to be PRO
Already testing and feedback will come.
PRO never looked so good ;) Well.. until like a month from now when more apps are introduced. :D
Great job Moz team.
All I can say is prepare for what is coming up next. This is just the tip of the iceberg. I kid you not. Get in there now and play around. It's only going to get better. :-D
You are spot on @katemorris :) lots coming down the pipeline, but we are so stoked to get this out in beta and get some feedback. #woohoo
I was thinking of letting my SEOMoz PRO membership expire due to financial troubles...
But after seeing this...
I might go mow a few lawns...
I hear there's a lot of those needing mowing this time of year..
Or, hopefully, the new web app can help make your sites (or your clients) some serious extra traffic and $ :-)
Wow look at all the comments already! I think the whole SEOmoz dev and project team deserve a massive round of applause for this (and maybe an early night :-)
Well done guys - SEOmoz FTW.
Do you know what we say it in Spain when having to do with something so promising as the SEOmoz web apps: that is cojonuda.
You're saying that "it's dipped in a creamy cheese sauce"?
Wow ... Spaniards are interesting folk.
:)
Rand & Co. Awesome work! This looks incredible! Will you be looking at allowing for more campaigns (for extra $ obviously)?
Was wondering the same thing, as the climb from Pro to Elite is a rather steep one.
Aside from upgrading to Elite or Premier, one capability we offer is the ability to 'Archive' a campaign. We'll keep all of the historical information, but just won't collect any new information. You can 'archive' and 'unarchive' a campaign at any time and begin collecting information right away.
Basically, the 5 campaigns in the PRO membership plan is for 5 active campaigns.
This may not be the place, but with these archived campaigns I do have a questions about un-archiving them a month later.
Will making an archived campaign active again show the original data from the month prior and then add the current time on the historical chart?
To keep things under control I imagine returning to archived campaigns every month or so and grabbing data month by month. It's diluting SEOmoz's intentions for weekly fresh data but manual monthly info would suite the needs for some of my clients.
Will my history remain intact at this monthly intervals?
Great question!
Yup, making an archived campaign active again will show the original data, and new data will be added as we collect it. There will however, but a gap of data for any period where the campaign was archived.
Good to know,
because that means that I can archive all the campaigns of all those potential clients whom I am pitching but finally do not sign any contract, as I am used to give some deep insides about website's SEO issue in the contracting phase.
On the other hand, yes... the limit to 5 active campaigns can be a problem when you are dealing with more active clients.
I only wish I would have upgraded to Elite last month to get grandfathered in at $129. Damn! But I still feel like I got upgraded - I can track 200 more keywords and get all these cool new apps to play with! Weeee!
One option I'd like to see so far - the ability to add a campaign for $x / month. The jump to the next level is much too expensive for my one-man operation but I already have 5 campaigns! I could increase my hourly rate or start an agency but it isn't feasible at the moment.
Either way GREAT JOB SEOMOZ - I tried some other SEO tools and stuck with you guys and you delivered the goods. Slam dunk, touchdown, home run, GOAAAALLLLL !
I had the same thoughts jschweitz. 500$ is too much for me right now, but I really would like to have another 2-3 campaigns.
Once we get scaling with load/reports/campaigns/etc and have the hardware and processes to stay strong and grow scalably, we'll certainly be looking into upgrading access for all the membership tiers. It really depends on cost structures, usage and how these first few months go, but I can imagine us granting a few more campaigns at PRO, Elite & Premier in the future.
Right now I think Engineering feels a bit like Scotty - "I'm giving 'er all she's got cap'n! She canna take no more!"
That's AWESOME guys, well done everyone!
If I was in Seattle I would buy beers all around :) Virtual high five will have to do for now!
Awesome work guys! After just having spent 10 minutes with a campaign - and 5 of those minutes waiting for the system to respond (Beta FTW) I'm confident this will very quickly become the heart of my future SEO audits.
Great job on creating an intuitive and user-friendly interface as well. I have seen plenty of fantastic technology solutions that are impossible to actually work with on a daily basis. This isn't and that's a big feat!
Woww!!! my pro membership is officially worth it now :) I was about to cancel.
*sigh*
I just planned a three-week vacation break, but how can I relax at some beach while not playing around with this super app?!
Major thumb up, for the concept itself and for actually creating it! This just gives that extra reason why to be a PRO.
Ps. I do need that break however, so technical feedback will have to wait for a while... but guess you guys are still around by then ;)
Great stuff, guys.
Have been playing aroudn with the app for a few hours, and its looking great. But how about adding the possibility to check rankings for non-english keywords by adding search language as a parameter? When adding search engines, I can select country but not language. Seems like all searches is performed in english, but my site is...well...not english :)
Looking forward to using this a lot in the future!
Make sure to use the Feedback tool when you're in the app to toss these suggestions over the wall.
They will read it.
Oh, I will :)
I think I'm caught in their spam-filter already...
Greetings from the UK :-)
Awsome stuff SEOMOZ! just waiting for my reports so I can have a play cant wait to get started
Sold. Upgrading.
Awesome! I've never regretted having a pro membership, but now I'm really excited. Quick question: how does this stack up against something like SearchLight?
One word. Amazing! I was just thinking the other day how i wish i could have an app like this! Thank you SEOmoz!
You have a brilliant team!
Keep up the good work!
So far everything looks good. The real test is waiting the week or so then coming back to this post when there is data to compare.
Ooh! Maybe in a week we should publish a post asking for people's feedback after a week of data.
I am just proud to be a pro member...
I love the new Crawl Diagnostics tab. It's definitely an improvement over the Crawl Test tool which was helpful but less user friendly. It's like I have my own little SEOMoz robot army working for me now...
Whoo Hoo!!!! I have been waiting for this beta with as much anticipation as I used to feel when I was a little one, in bed on Christmas Eve and waiting for Christmas morning to come. I've set up my first campaign but haven't finished playing with it. I wanted to come back here to say MAJOR WOO HOO!!!!! SEOmoz! You totally hit it outta the ballpark with this beta. Job well done.
When you do set up that campaign, be sure to import a few dozen keywords from your analytics. I was shocked when it showed me how many of my "top" referring keywords had C grades or worse and ranked in the top 10-20 regardless. It's weird to see the power of on-page optimization again; so 2002, but it really works.
RE: so 2002, I still firmly believe in OPO. Believe it or not, it's still a foreign concept to many a small business.
RE: This awesome new "Campaign Mgr"? It's so 2020!
Thanks for this new awesome tool. I am thinking of upgrading to yearly subscription now :)
I think it's only appropriate that you're the first person to comment on this post since you were refreshing the blog home page for like 3 straight hours.
[Said in the best Get Smart voice he can manage] Would you believe my finger had a nervous tick and it was coincidence that it happened to be on the refresh button every 15 seconds?
Thanks for hanging in there. Have a great time 'unwrapping' and playing with your new SEO App toy.
This is almost as sweet as when I got my GI Joe complete with his wooden footlocker. It's a close call.
Hey goodnewscowboy! You are the biggest Mozfanboi of all time, and I like it!
You've got me curious. What's up with your empty profile? Do you actually do SEO work for clients? Or maybe you're a webmaster that loves to learn about SEO for your own website?Do you have a website? Or maybe you're paid by SEOmoz? Does Rand personally deliver stacks of cash to your door every week in exchange for your abundant enthusiasm? :)
I'd really like to know more about you. You're one of my favourite mozzers. You're so engaged in the SEOmoz community, but beyond that, shrouded in mystery! What's your deal cowboy?
I thought the exact same thing.
If you Google "goodnewscowboy" you find empty profiles all over the internet.
You are the biggest Mozfanboi of all time
LOL! Gee Darren, I'm sure I'm not the biggest but I'll definitely admit to being one of the most sincere fans. Not only of the SEOmoz crew but of the community as well. There's never any flaming (we're not counting the other Darren - just kidding SEO Mofo) and plenty of respect given to all by all. It's hard not to be a fanboy (unless of course you're a girl in which case it'd be impossible)
Does Rand personally deliver stacks of cash to your door every week...
Hmmmm. While that hasn't happened yet, it would sure be a great use of that 1.2 million he's been sitting on. Rand...are you reading this?
What's your deal cowboy?
Believe it or not, online I'm an extremely private person. Which is why, as Cyrus found, I've managed to avoid putting any info about myself out there. For years and years I only lurked on these types of forums. When I finally lost the arm wrestle with myself to stay quiet, and started engaging, I picked a generic name that sorta described me and I've used it ever since.
But in the spirit of TAGFEE (that's WAGFEET for you Jen) I'll share this: I've been in outside sales most of my adult life. You can guess how long that's been by the fact that I received a GI Joe with the wooden footlocker as a lad. In the very early 2000's I became intrigued by the awesome sales potential of the web and I've been onboard the SEO learning wagon ever since.
I still work a full time job sales/mktg to put food on the table for my family (there's another tidbit) but my all consuming overriding passion is the combination of Site Design / SEO / Usability and the ability of that synthesis to produce world class income producing machines (aka really good websites)
I manage a handful of clients on the side and my lifetime goal is to be almost as good as the best Edmonton web design and SEO agency someday. :)
So now you know the whole sorry sordid story Darren.
The mystery is solved! Thanks for sharing goodnewscowboy, and thanks for the link drop! :)
You're welcome Darren. And enjoy the link drop. It cost me a thumbs down! (Unless they didn't like that I was a part time SEO)
As a recently contributing lurker myself, I just want to thank you for a little extra nudge of inspiration to leave the lurker 90% and join the talkers! ;D
Oops, I double posted. Fresh outta lurking mistake.
Please ignore this message.
Super psyched by the actuality of integrating the tools! It's a pain switching from tab to tab trying to collect and compile data. It's like you guys were reading my mind!
Now it's time to go play ...
Well done to the SEOmoz crew for this. Its been great to see it all take shape and go live to such a good response.
The best part is that the real value comes from this tool when it has been running for a week or two. So given the excitement already, things are really going to take off when everyone sees what the App can do after gathering more data!
Paddy
This app is going to be so, so useful for our company.
Great work by everyone!
Looks like my dance card for the next few evening has just filled up.
Well, looks like I'll get to spend some extra time on the golf course now! You're making our jobs too easy.
That is the goal ;) enjoy!
This post has finally pushed me over the edge and has convinced me to become a PRO member. Whatever you guys are doing, it's working.
That is like music to our ears, thanks for the kind words Sean! Look forward to hearing your feedback after you check it out! :)
As excited as when we first played with concepts on the whiteboard... Good work team. Looking forward to the next iterations.
Great job from the moz team! More competition in the SEO ranking and reporting tool field is welcome. Really good news as it actually enhance my SEOmoz membership :-)
We really love to hear that. :)
Ahh, I am so tempted to get a pro membership...looks great guys, congrats.
Glad to see the site back up and extremely excited about the new web app! Thank you SEOMOZ
Rand, I think some of your team need a pay rise!!!
Shhhhh. Candy! They should all get more candy. And an SEOmoz umbrella. I'm not one for swag but they do live in Seattle.
The new tool is great,
I am worried it may be that good it will make web dev teams not require SEO's any more.
One concern is the new pricing structure for the tools, say I am a small SEO agency with 15 local clients does that mean I need to pay $24,000 a year to monitor the clients.
We'll see how it pans out but my hope is that strategic archiving and then manually rerunning the campaign at monthly intervals will work for our "smaller" needs.
That was what I was planning to do... about rankings (that maybe needs an higher refresh, as the clients are anxious by nature), I can still monitor them weekly with other tools.
Congratulations to SEOmoz.
Let me know when you need a bit of funding or if you intend to go public. With a team like yours, it is hard to see how you won't become the benchmark for SEO Tools. ;)
Awesomeness right, left and center. Team, tools, effort, pragmatism and helpfulness. If there was a page ranking SEOmoz on those parameters, well... It has got be an A+ doesn't it?
Gratz with the launch, Kings and Queens of SEO. I hail you.
Hey SEOMoz,
The app looks great, I'm excited about it.
That said, I set-up my campaign 3 days ago and it hasn't finished the initial 50 page crawl. That has to be a bug, there's no way it should take that long even under serious load.
I am having the same issue as BrianSEO, set up my campaignm on Friday and it is still not showing anything from the initial 50 page crawl.
The tool looks amazing, hopefully this is something that can be remedied quickly
Ditto here. I mentioned the issue in a support ticket a few days ago but haven't heard anything back yet. When I do I'll post here.
Hey guys -
First - so sorry about the initial crawls taking so long! We thought they would be much faster, but it turns out that we made one critical error in our implementation.
When someone requests a crawl be it so or fast, we put those into a queue. The problem that is happening is that we have so many crawls, that there is a big backup. We implemented prioritiesin the queue so that the fast crawls would go first, and then the big crawls would take place - but we can only have 1000 or so crawls going on at once. Right now those are being taken up by some big crawls and we don't want to cancel them because then those users won't get their full data. So that is the reason for the wait.
We are currently working on a solution which will allow us to easily separate the different crawls and considering removing the fast crawl. We hope that won't be necessary though, since there is a lot of satisfaction in getting data when you sign up (since some full crawls can take up to 7 days).
Hope that helps explain the wait. Hopefully the fast crawls will get finished in the next 24-48 hours.
Kate
(PS - sorry that was so long, but thought you would rather have more information than not enough)
Hi everyone!
So most of the rankings should be populated for campaigns setup on Wenesday-Friday.
Fast crawls are still a bit slower than we would like, but we are working on making those fasters (and a lot should be available if you site is fast - some of the delay is due to slow servers and our crawler tries to be very polite and not generate extra load).
As for the full site crawl, depending on your level of PRO and how fast your server is, this can take anywhere from 1-7 days. In most cases, for 10,000 pages and a fast server you should see results in about 2-4 days.
And once the crawl is done we do our on-page analysis. The thing to know here, is that it can take longer if you have big pages because we pull down the whole page to do the analysis. So you can expect these to take a little bit longer if you have lots of images, etc.
Hope that helps explain some of the delays! The app really does get truly awesome when you have a few weeks of data and can see trends, improvements, etc.
Also, please keep the feedback coming! We have been getting so many great ideas and really appreciate your thoughts and input.
-Kate
Thanks for the feedback, Kate, I'll keep an eye on my account for any updates.
Hmm, still nothing and no reply to my support request. I know I'm new here and there's clearly a lot of SEOmoz love going around but I'm finding it hard to justify the PRO membership I took out last week just to try this app. Granted it's beta, but surely it's reasonable to expect *some* degree of functionality or support?
Hello there!
Sorry for the time gap in responding to your support request - we've had a lot of great feedback from the beta and it has taken some time to sort through and respond to a lot of people. Again, terribly sorry for the delay.
I've responded to your request via your latest ticket; please respond to me there so I can get it in my support desk and respond to you faster. Again, thanks so much for your patience and for trying out the beta Web App!
/Aaron
Wowzers, can't wait to use this. Luckily, I'm a PRO member!
And thanks for the tips in the post to get it started.
Kudos to the whole development team at SEOmoz.
This is what I call a lucky shot (for me).
I went PRO just one week ago, and have been thinking "man how I'd love to have all these reports and tools centralized and tracked form a central app..."
And here it is! Was anyone looking over my shoulder and listening in on my thoughts?! It's almost weird that you just launched the exact same app I was thinking about! *shiver*
Well done and keep up the good work.
Michel
PS: Now, if all other pro-members could log-out of the tool and let me take a look, that would be great! It seems that the servers are overloaded and I'm stuck on the outside! :(
Wow! I can't wait to try this out. I've been waiting for something like this from SEOmoz. I love how you guys are always innovating and getting better. Keep up the good work!
- Evan
On page optimization is great, but you need to be able to delete old reports. They end up becoming confusing duplicates.
I can't wait to hear everyone's thoughts on this new app. I've been playing around on it for a little while and have been amazed! Great work you guys and keep it up! I can't wait to really dive in!
Im reading people are tempted to get Pro Membership - with tools like this its really a no brainer - SEOMoz has been my tutor and this is great stuff - a tool that does my work for me - haha and im one of the original Grandfather accounts . Im getting an SEOmoz Tatoo
Whew, that was amazing!
I have to say, though, I feel somewhat like Zaphod stepping out of the Total Perspective Vortex. It was so amazingly cool you could keep a side of meat in it for a month, but for the most part it just confirmed what I already knew.
Also, I'm hungry. For fairy cake. It should have some fairy cake in there somewhere. For that matter, you might consider calling it the "Total Perspective Vortex," it's a fitting name.
This is an awesome tool, it brings together the critical information in a scalable way.
What I like about SEOmoz is that you guys understand, better than anyone else I've seen, what information is most important for the actual practice of SEO, and you're actively conducting experiments and building tools to track that information.
Well done!
"Don't try to outweird me, three-eyes. I get stranger things than you free with my breakfast cereal."
The grandfather pricing policy is amazing - incredible way to value customers. Mucho kudos to you.
Ok, I'm impressed with the Apps too, and look forward to feeding back.
All the best
Great stuff, Rand! The thing I really appreciate about SEOmoz is that you guys come up with new, cutting-edge features all the time. You seem to be very in tune with us users and what we need/want. I can't wait to play with the WebApp this afternoon.
The only thing missing here is that you all didn't provide us with free tissues to wipe up the drool collecting from our excitement over this new app. Great job!
Haha next time we'll send out tissues beforehand. :) Thanks for the kind words!
Finally!! Can't wait to test this epic suite tomorrow. Man .. Now I'm contemplating whether I should get up again and build a first campaign. Checking twitter one last time before going to bed seems to be getting unhealthy :-)
Don't worry :) We'll be here in the morning
Just set-up a campaign. It is very easy. Can't wait to get some data out of it and improve SEO based on the data.
Certainly looks like helpful tool.
Wow! Let's just say we are not in Kansas anymore!
Where do you want us to send beta comments?
You can use the little feedback link to the left hand of the app :)
Wow, I cannot wait to try it out. Looks like an ideal way to help monitor, improve SEO campaigns and save time.
Am I the first to say I HATE THIS APP, I HATE THIS APP, I HATE THIS APP, I HATE THIS APP!!!
Do you realize how much time I am spending fixing dup titles and other issues LOL
{wink}
Thanks SEOmoz, great job! I am really going to enjoy the simplicity of finding errors.
Richard
Looks amazing
This new feature is so Double Rainbow!
haha that's hilarious. OMG Double rainbow all the way! I'm going to start using that term around the office "yes! That's so double rainbow"
As long as you repeat yourself 54 times and get more dramatic each time.
.... Wauw!! I wish i could multi-orgasm as much over nature.
Minds are currently being blown on my team...
The new tools are interesting, I agree it saves time rather then doing several different reports.
My only concerns are 1. Can we only track 5 different URL's with 5 different keywords.
Also competitors only the top 3 =(
Interesting developnments but =)
Great work SEO MOZ Team.
The app right now will automatically track any URLs from your site that appear in the top 50 results for the keywords you choose. If you have PRO, that's up to 250 keywords.
Right now, we'll highlight up to 3 competitors - would more be useful? Up to what amount?
I always shoot for top 5 competitors for client presentations. 5 would be sweet :)
I say 6 is a good number.
I am often asked to run competitive analysis and the magic number comes down to 4-6. This means that I usually talk my clients down to 4-6. When I deal with marketers (who's budgets usually pay for my services) they are always very keen on the competition.
Perhaps indulging them is the wrong tactic, but my vote is for 6 competitors.
Now I'm off to run this tool... this web app.
I don't think the more the better. People can focus on 2 competitors above you and 1 bellow. Or 3 competitors above you.
I hope you can change campaign set-up anytime if
ranking jumps up by many places.
I think narrow focus is better. It might be because I am influenced by books from 37signals.
Ild say 6 would be a good number!
Another concern with the competitor tracking are we only able to track main urls ie: www.seomoz.org and we can not seem to track Seomoz.org/blog/
The only reason I ask is I am testing this tool for specific keyword been finance realted, my competitors are SMB's yet also large corps weigh into this space the smb's use main urls yet the big crops use sub domains to target these keywords, as their main urls target more broad range keywords.
But yeah I am seeing the first results from my report and it is amazing stuff, I mean I have used over 20 SEO tools in the past 4 years and this is some great stuff =)
Well 6 would be better than 5 but I didn't want to appear greedy.
Well it really depends on your niche I guess, I mean "Potting mix supplier North Sydney" may have only two compeititors. Yet if I check up on some competitors in the finance or lawyers niche I see a easy need for 6.
I mean when you are left with 3 comeptitors when you are on page one for a keyword you do not only look at 4 rankings.
There for with at least 6 you have have the top 7 covered.
I looks like you're building a very desirable application. I can't wait to start using it. Congrats to the SEOMOZ team !
testing the tool here, I'm enjoying, in fact, you are to be congratulated.
Wow, I am speechless this is more than amazing. Looks unbelievably great. Congrats Rand and all people who were involved in making of this. The tool leaves all others out there in dust, including Google ;-)
Emil
This looks like it is gonna be a huge time saver. Nice work guys and I look forward to diving in and playing with this.
This is a huge help for all SEO professionals.
I have signed up for SEOmoz PRO two weeks ago and I am very happy with my choice :)
Starting my first campaign and will give feedback. Thanks!
As I said before, I think this is fantastic. However, there is one significant piece of information that this tool is not giving me.
As Darth Rumsfeld put it, "There are known knowns. There are things we know we know. We also know there are known unknowns. That is to say we know there are some things we do not know." What I'm concerned about is a known unknown.
I want to know about popular keywords where I'm in the top 50, but I'm not well optimized. This does a great job of that for keywords that I already know about, but what about keywords I haven't thought of?
I know there are popular keywords I haven't thought of that I'm relevant for. Every now and then one of them will surface in Google Analytics, when I accidentally rank well enough to get some traffic.
So if you happen to do a rankings check for some other keyword not on my list and one of my pages is in the top 50, I would very much like to know about it.
Great point! This is why I'm so bullish on importing your top 50-500 referring keywords from Google Analytics. You'll find that many of these have rankings on page 2 or 3 and get grades of D-F.
In the future, we'll certainly be looking into ways to ID pages that might be ranking (mayb based on links or anchor text) but haven't been optimized and still live in the top 30-50 (where they likely get very few clicks at all). Integration with GA and Webmaster Tools APIs may help here, too.
Speaking of rankings:
As a new startup, it would be great if we could track rank for more than just Top50. This will be more and more relevant as competition heats up. Any chance for an improvement on this front?
I agree, and even if you only have 250 keywords, you can rotate those out as you take care of them and rotate new ones in. This will catch the really high traffic terms where you will get a fair number of referrals even if you're on page 4. So I'll be able to find many such terms by this procedure, yes.
Many, however, will slip through the cracks. I got traffic for 26,420 keywords in the last month. How many of those fall into this category of interest? I have no idea, and obviously I can't import them all even if I could afford the Pro Premier membership, which I can't. Some of these keywords may get only one visit in a month if you're on page 4, but still get reasonable traffic on page 1.
I understand that this is a lot to ask for, as you would have to keep track of the top 50 for every search query you do and cross-reference that with the URLs you've crawled for every account in order to display this data. Just thinking it might be a cool feature for the long term, that's all.
Keyword rankings
Of the 5 keywords supplied 3 have returned the wrong data. App shows “Not in top 50” when in fact the site is in the top 5 for all 3 keywords.
On-page optimization
Nothing here that isn’t done a lot better by Microsoft’s IIS tool which is 100% free and has no page limits.
Pricing
Pro $79 per month – 5 campaigns
Pro Elite $499 per month – 10 campaigns
Pro Premier $2,000 per month – 50 campaigns
Huh? This pricing makes no sense to me. Why does the price increase 630% for only a 100% increase in the number of campaigns?
On the plus side, the UI is nice and having all SEO tools in a single app will be great when the app comes out of Beta.
re: the pricing tiers richdan, my guess is that it's not so much the number of campaigns as the number of keywords that are driving the tier differences.
Pro allows 5 campaigns, and 250 keywords.
Elite allows 10 campaigns, and 2000 keywords.
And the pricing will be $100 in less than 2 weeks so the actual comparison would be:
Elite costs 500% more, for a 100% increase in campaigns and an 800% increase in number of keywords tracked.
That said, my personal preference for Pro would be more campaigns, say 7-8, and maybe another 125 - 150 keywords.
But this is all beta and anything can happen in the future. Look at how they took off the cap for Linkscape reports. Chances are excellent that if they can afford the bandwidth and storage increases, they will give us more down the road. Cuz' that's just the kind of nice folks they are at the moz.
freaking awesome !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Well this is way cool.
Too bad it is 11:00pm over here on the East Coast and I dont have time to start testing.
I actually had to get out of bed to make this comment (Your comment system doesnt seem to allow me to post from my Ipad. Maybe a safari or javascript thing?). And yes SEOmoz is part of my bedtime reading...
Tomorrow is shaping up to be an exciting day.
Now to just clear my schedule of those pesky client meetings so I can dig into the new tools.
I figured out the iPad problem. The comment box pops up at the top of the page, so i have to scroll up to the top of the post to input my comment.
No problem there.
Now to see if I can use the new web app on my iPad... :)
I love your approach here!
Bed + iPad + Web App = Profit!!!
I've got my first campaign results back, and I'm waiting on my second I set up. I was compelled to pop in and say "Hey everyone at the mozplex!" and now that I have your attention "This app is utterly, absolutely, TOTALLY STINKIN' AWESOME!!!!!!
Having access to all the tools right from the campaign itself is brilliant.
To everyone on the fence about whether or not to go PRO to get access to this tool, I have this to say:
Subscribe now while it's $79/mth to lock in the rate. You can always cancel next month (although I have a strong suspicion you won't)
Realy that's a amazing tool, congratulations SEO Moz Team. :)
After watching the mozinar today, I can not wait to get my campaigns up and running.
I've only had a chance to have a thirty minute play around with the application so far but I'm absolutely loving it. The user interface is nearly perfect and I can't wait for the features to expand even more. Unfortunately I missed out on the Thursday update for the on-page grades.
One place I think it could be improved is the crawl errors. It takes waaaaay too many clicks to get where I want to get when I press "crawl errors". Everything else is great, though.
The new PRO price plans are very attractive. Unfortunately I may have to let my PRO membership run dry. I'll be sad to see it go but until get at least one SEO retainer then I can't afford to pay for it!! Maybe soon, eh?
I can't wait to see what SEOmoz brings to the table in the future. I genuinely thing that this is going to be the number one place to come for absolutely everything.
Also, great introduction video. Really passionate and interesting. I had it full blast and full screen on my 27" monitor at work whilst me and the SEO were getting excited about using the application.
Great work, guys.
Hi,
Very new member here, trying to understand things. I added 2 campaigns with 5 keywords each on Thursday but to date I see only 1 page having been crawled on one domain and none on the other. Nothing is reported under crawl diagnostics or on-page optimization. Should I be doing something else to initiate reporting of these figures? Should I just wait longer? Could there be something wrong?
Thoughts, comments, etc. appreciated.
Congratulations, really awesome work guys :)
Nice tool. I did not get a chance to go through the comments so I am not sure if this was already answered. I ran my report and 90% of my problems were to do with wordpress in some way or another. Is that a pretty consisant issue since it is in beta or is there maybe something wrong with what I am doing in wordpress?
This is sick! It just gets better and better! :)
I have to say, I've never seen Rand extremely excited like that. Actually such a great App/Tool/Timer Saver deserve it. I'm happy for SEOmoz team, Rand, and every SEOmoz user (including me of course) for having this.
Love this site management tool. The direction you're taking SEOmoz in is brilliant.
Just activated my pro account and created a new campaign, as soon as crawling finishes I'll jump right in to discover all the features!
Thanks for the great tools
Thanks i will sign up for this but i want to ask
do your program support arabic keywords ? because my site in arabic
Very awesome! It's looking really good so far and I can't wait to see some of the updates you've been talking about go live!
We've included a link to this post in our blog carnival at https://bit.ly/aREeWE. This service alone is worth the pro account!
This is fantastic! I've been a Pro member for quite a while, and I've been hoping you would put out an App that pulls everything together... and now you did.
I have one question/request:
We have a couple of test sites that we use for our own research, we have our own agency site, and then we have 3 main client sites. A couple of the client sites have over 25 target/landing pages (each focusing on 3-4 keywords).
All of this puts us in the 400-500 keyword range. We don't have the budget yet to upgrade to the 2,000-keyword level. Do you guys have plans to offer other keyword usage options? Or do we just need to wait and upgrade when we are able?
Again, 2 thumbs up on your accomplishment with this new tool !!
-shawn
Looks very promising!
Greatest tool ever.
This awesome - instead of making us pay more for the same thing, you've given us more and are allowing us to pay the same thing. That is value!
Any plans/talk about making an i-phone app?
This looks awesome - playing around with my first campaign now.
A little bug for you - If you click the FAQ within the App, and then click "Return to Web App", it breaks.
Besides that, it's looking good. I'll update if I find other issues.
Hey Aloha -
Good catch - I just fixed the link and it should work now :)
Thanks!
One other thing. I created some campaigns, imported lists of keywords, got my competitors in there too. But I'm not seeing any data yet. This was about six hours ago, so I assume it had time to run.
I saw the note saying rankings update weekly on Saturdays - is this true for all the data and I just missed the update time? I'm itching to play around with this tool, so I hope I don't have to wait a week to see any data at all.
Thanks!
It's taken a couple of days for the ranking data to fill in for all of our keywords. It doesn't bother me at this point, as I can see the potential of all of the data pulled together in this tool. I'm sure SEOmoz is working hard to make it happen faster, but it is in beta.
Did your site crawl data and "report cards" fill in at that point too or are you waiting on that still?
I do understand it's beta - its just very exciting from a SEO process standpoint!
I have the same question. Set things up on Thursday and see some data for keywords but only one page has been crawled so far - not sure if something is wrong or if I still need to wait...
Based on what I've been reading, the SEOmoz servers are working harder than a lone waiter in a room of 50 families on Mother's Day.
Kate has probably moved into the Batcave and is now living in the mozplex.
But I predict they'll get it all sorted out quickly based on the new servers they're bringing online.
@goodnewscowboy
We have been in the office most of the weekend, although we do go to our respective homes to sleep :)
Also, we are actively working to make this even better - we just couldn't wait to share it with our community and PRO users so you all could start collecting data. :)
Thanks for the words of encouragement!
Really like this! Is anyone else's Rankings tab not working? Or is that not working yet?
My rankings tab is stuck too David. I highly suspect that this is all due to the inordinate demand upon the servers. But then that's the nature of the beta test. We're all doing our best to stress the straw outta the system. Kate is probably loving us right now ;)
It has been working. It's probably across the street right now taking a well earned coffee break.
Oh we all totally love you guys!
We have just had a lot more initial crawls and rankings coming in all at once. We are going through them though and we are setting up even more servers with more queues, so hopefully we should be able to get rankings and crawl data back even faster.
I know all of us really appreciate your paitence and love for the new app! :)
Yeah, I only put in 5 keywords so as to get rankings immediately as mentioned by Rand above...but my rankings have been loading for over 40 minutes now. Not too big of a deal, as I was using RankChecker anyway and know where I rank but I wanted to play...
All the options look bad@ss though - keyword difficulty and rankings history right there. Plus I get an extra 150 keywords for the same price (or more, actually, since searching Yahoo and Google for the same keyword took up 2 credits).
Hi David - you're right; we've been seeing that many of these requests take time. We could be 1-2 hours before we grab new rankings right now, but that should be down to just a few minutes in the weeks to come (and we'll always update your rankings at least every 7 days automatically).
The current load is trending down a bit, but we expect to see a few more spikes before the week is over. We're also scaling up bandwidth, machines and re-writing some code to help out, so next week should be much better than this one.
Well as soon as the tool lets me in I am ready to play in the sand!
We're up and running!
Very excited to start using!! Rand another fabulous addition to the SEOmoz offerings. You guys continue to expand the boundaries and possibilities
All i can say...Sweet. Must go play now. ;o)
W00T, this rocks!
One suggestion: you might want to reduce the initial crawl down to 50 URLs or so, then do a second crawl with 250, then the full crawl. It's taking quite a long time to do the initial crawl, and even with only 50 URLs at least we'd have something to play with while we wait for the rest of the crawl to finish.
Your timing is amazing! The engineering team is just now turning down the initial "fast" crawl to 50 pages to help ease the current load (we have more than 50,000 jobs in the queue right now). By Monday or Tuesday of next week, we believe we'll have things much better, and by the wider launch in 2 weeks, we're anticipating being considerably smoother and faster across the board.
These are the kinds of problems you want to have.
That's ironic: I had 71 URLs crawled already when they turned it down to 50. So maybe my timing isn't so good after all!
The timing on releasing this tool is perfect, though. I was just starting to do an audit of my subcategory pages to look for low-hanging fruit of exactly the kind this is supposed to identify. It'll go a lot faster now!
Anyone else getting a 503 error when trying to use the links. Is the right location pro.seomoz.org?
edit: wow, nevermind within just afew seconds of posting it has come back up.
Is this some Apple type marketing trick? ramp up the hype? ;) i cant get in to try it out!
FEED the Hamsters please! I want to try it out and your servers are overloaded!
Seriously, looks great. I think the paradigm of everything in 1 place and connected will be so much more powerful the more you build on this platform.
Now if i can just see what it looks like...
Alright boys and girls ... enough reading this post. I'm goin' in!
Boooyah!
Love the new system Rand. In fact its a love hate relationship with it given i had been developing my own system which is quite similar.
Its a massive leap forward with your tools though. Tying them together into a per project system. Makes everything far more useful and meaningful.
Awesome work guys :)
oh man oh man oh man so jealous of all the pro members!
Very nicely done- pro membership has never closer than now... would love for you to share how this will impact the PRO membership volume because with a tool like this many SEO could save some time and make some more adjustment to increase traffic, profits and more.
Congratulations to all the SEOmoz team!
The video seems to be broken.
It slowly loads till halfway and then suddenly it's fully loaded, but I can only play until somewhere in the middle near 2:51...
I have cleared my cache multiple times and tried different browsers.
Wow, If you're not a pro member you are missing out! Join now. I'm very impressed and that takes a lot when it comes to SEO tools.
dayum. SEOmoz, ya'll don't ef around. good job.
Hope intro webinar will be posted on the site. For whatever reason, not taking my password - but I can log in. Weird.
Managed to get my first campaign in just before I broke the whole thing :) Been hitting f5 for 2 hours now, hopefully in a few days time it will have been scaled up to be able to handle all the requests.
Glad to see its getting hammered (and I mean that in a good way!)
Thanks SEOmoz crew for providing awesome tools.
Hi Bob - so glad you like it so far!
We are actually down right now upgrading the application, which should definitely improve things tomorrow! Expect more of these evening downtimes over the next couple of weeks while we sort out the "beta"-ness!
(so no worries, you didn't break anything!)
Its lunchtime here ;)
Yippie! Digital high fives to SEOMOZ! Thanks for all you do!
WOW! It looks amazing! Can't wait to add my keywords into web app and see the results!
Congrats to the team!
Can't wait to try the new app. I had my suspicions before, glad you confirmed them. Integrating into one platform is the sustainable way to go.
Double thumbs up!
I love this thing. And really, that;s all that matters, isn't it?
