I've just put the finishing touches on something new that I think is a killer addition to our current arsenal of SEO tools. It's basically a tricked-out version of the "Where's it Rank?" PHP script that I offered up for free (source code) several months back. The tool is pretty straightforward: you enter a URL, keyword, and what search engine you'd like to search and it will automatically check your rankings and report back.
In addition to the features the original script had, I added the following bells and whistles:
- Supports Google, Yahoo, MSN, and Ask
- Allows you to check rankings on all the foreign TLDs on the major SEs (google.co.uk, de.yahoo.com, etc)
- You can either be forwarded to the actual SERPs or simply have the tool report back the rankings it found
- Rankings can be added to your rankings archives
- Ranking archives can be viewed, sorted, and downloaded as a CSV file
- When rankings are found it reports whether they have increased or dropped (when compared to previous rankings) and this change is stored in your archives
I also created a browser button that allows you to conveniently check the rankings for the page you're currently viewing.
The tool is free but requires you to be logged into your SEOmoz account. Also, because it's is a bit resource intensive basic members are limited to 5 keywords a day, premium members can run an unlimited amount.
I've just got to add that for a tool that took a little over a day to build (oh, how I love my rapid development framework) I'm really pleased with the results - what it lacks in complexity it more than makes up for in replay value. I'm hoping it becomes one of the resources that keeps people coming back day after day, much like the PS tool or IP2Loc.
Please send any questions, comments or feedback about our Rank Checker tool to [email protected].
Are you considering offering a way to update all of your previously entered/archived rankings without having to re-submit each and every one? A one-click or (better yet) automated update system would make this tool much more useful. Until then, this offers nothing more than Digital Point's tool, aside from showing Ask.com ranks, which I could really care less about. For the moment, I'm unconvinced. (and yes, I've used the premium version)
+1
Wow, that is a really great tool. I like how it shows the page and the position #, rather than just the overall number like other scripts do. And the additional features are excellent.
I think that "where's" means "where is" or "where has", not "where does", but people probably use it for "where does" all the time without realizing it. *takes deep breath and waits for thumbs-down*
You're probably right. Damnit. I am are suck at english.
But you are awesome at SEO tools...so we'll call it even.
Looks like a really great tool; however, it doesn't seem to work for me. Maybe I'm doing something wrong, but the results aren't accurate for me. As an example, when I search for the phrase Tannersite it still says "not found in the top 100," even though my page is number 1 for the phrase.
I accidentally coded it so it would only match case sensitive names (you were searching for TannerSite.com). It's fixed now.
You know, I was wondering if you guys could see the queries we are making.
Now I'm going to have to spend a few hours coming up with some devious and disturbing queries to run just to screw with you guys...
Loving that idea. That's going to keep me busy all morning.
Did you guys purposefully wait till my Premium membership ran out to release this? Did you? DID YOU>?!?
;)
Come on, Ciaran, you know damn well that our entire reason for living is to rid you of your ill-gotten pennies ;)
This is a great tool - thanks. Between the unlimited keyword tracking and the new Q&A the premium membership is definitely increasing in value (not saying that it wasn't before =)
And along the same lines as softplus, how do you get around the TOS? I've been using DigitalPoint's tool for years and for that we have to have our own developer API keys and even host our own script for MSN and Yahoo... from first glance however this looks very similar to the DP tool (+ Ask).
From a quick look at the source code, it just scrapes the Google results. I suppose that's pretty much against Google's Terms of Service: "You specifically agree not to access (or attempt to access) any of the Services through any automated means (including use of scripts or web crawlers)".It's also against their webmaster guidelines: "Don't use unauthorized computer programs to submit pages, check rankings, etc.". It's still a neat tool, but if you use it you should be aware of things like that.
Yes, we're aware of the TOS. The volume that it scrapes is minimal and we use the APIs as often as we can (page strength tool is 95% api driven), but in certain scenarios it's necessary to scrape. Google's API does not provide the same search results as the web search. If it did we'd gladly use the API.
I look at it this way: we're offering a service to webmasters that simply aims to save them time. We're not scraping google with the intention of spamming the hell out of the serps with splogs or sending out massive armies of bots that commit clickfraud. When it comes to people who scrape the search engines, I think SEOmoz is the least of Google's worries.
I agree that your tool is probably not much of a nuisance to Google's servers - but it's still something which they don't like to see. I don't know if your code is still the same, but you could reduce the number of queries (to Google at least) by adding the parameter "num=100" to the URL (get all 10 pages in one swipe). Something like that might help reduce the chances of getting "recognized".
In your situation I would be kind of worried about being pretty visible in the SEO area already, would Google be sending a signal by actively permitting you to scrape like this? It would be trivial for them to find your server's IP and block access (even if you used a limited set of proxy servers). The other solution would be for them to bring back the SOAP API or give you access to this data directly (or isn't it visible in the webmaster console?). :-)
Scraping 100 results at a time shows different results, I have to do it ten at a time
Did you just say that the rankings are different if you go through 10 sets of pages with 10 results than if you request 100 results on a page????
REALLY?
Wow, that's a subtle trick on SEO's. (who else sets their preferences to 100 results on a page?)
Nice catch!
i only use the 100 results if i'm checking to see if they are even in there. but to check actual ranking - don't use the 100 results.
Hey softplus - can I send you a pm somehow?
You can send it to me at softplus @ gmail.com :-)
Very nice tool Oatmeal.
I'm wasting time with it right now instead of working. Love it!
...and to all that mentioned it before, YES the Q&A more than pays for the Annual Premium Membership fee.
Second that.
Oh man, I love this tool. Thanks for the new addiction. It's like crack for SEOs. My poor children will never see mommy again.
that's what they should call it, "seo crack" instead of "rank checker".
Way to SEO the wild, Oats! :)
Thoughts on WTF, AOL? Ever since they started playing in AJAX as I understand, SEOs' ability to scrape them has all pretty much gone kaput. Have you found the same?
I have no idea, I've never scraped AOL, but I do know that AOL search is powered by Google.
True right now, yes. Still, they're good to keep an eye on if/as possible, given all ever-present variables: continual business incest between engines, market shares, average click shares per position per engine, and project specific conversion rate differences per one's targeted segments all come to mind.
Anyway, nice to see another tool in the box; cheers.
Had to thumbs up you on that little pun.
Unfortunately i am not finding anything Great on this tool, which is more or less what the other existing ones do... I found lot of "Greats" and "Wows" above - am not offending anyone, I appologize, if anyone feel it bad - but when I saw the title in my Feed reader my expectation was something which is better than the DP tool.
I am not a programmer who knows teh exact difficulties to build such tools but as a user of similar tools, I can say "it is possible".
Untill you enhance the features which let me:
1. checking multiple keywords at a time 2. checking multiple SEs at a time3. Allow me to export in a neat format4. Showing the Rise/Drops in a communicating manner
and may be more....
I know people questioning about Paid/Free to you guys.. but when I hear a tool from SeoMoz, I would expect it has some credibility which other doesn't.
I could be wrong and some may have other specific reasons to justify this which I may agree on a later occation. But now I am just typing why I am disappointed.
Hope you guys take it in a positive way.
I wouldn't be so apologetic, kichus. Feedback and constructive criticism can only make good tools better. In its current form, the rank check tool doesn't fit your needs, but you suggested how it could be improved to be of more practical use for you (which is much better than simply whining and saying "it sucks" which some members have been known to do). Great suggestions BTW!
Thanks for hearing roadies. I don't mind being a little apologetic since I am talking to a community where the acceptance level may vary person to person. - You can see the thumps Up and Down, that says.
Anyway we at SEORefugee do discuss about what is happening in the SEO world and we had a small discussion on this tool too.. Most of us were expecting some more features to this one instead of being a competition to tons of similar tools... From seomoz we expect more.. and I hope Rand knows that...
did you know that google throws different result to different users? The result thrown to ppl in US is different from the one in Aussie, for example. Considering that your result is done automatically by your server in your area, it may be a little bit inaccurate if used by ppl from different area than your server's.
dang! that's pretty slick alright. you're gonna make me have to go and work harder so i can afford the premium membership so i can then play with this all day...wait, that won't work.
It would be really cool to be able to automatically track the same terms and re-run them through the rank checker...perhaps a check-box and then click "update" - but this is a very cool tool and I love using it!
Certainly one of the most valuable (and time saving) tools SEOmoz has to offer. But, to make it even more time saving: is it possible to add research multiple keywords in one click?
URL [ ]
Keyword 1 [ ]
Keyword 2 [ ]
Keyword 3 [ ]
...
[Check rankings]
This would save me the time of having to click back.
Or, perhaps even better, a 'Refresh' icon in each row of 'My Archived Rankings' that allows me to check my current status on a KW I already checked before. Maybe even a checkboxes with one 'Refresh' button?
awesome tool. thanks!
Great tool, you guys are definitely getting me on the line with buying a premium membership, if for nothing other than the tools.
Great Scott :https://www.dvdbeaver.com/film/DVDReviews9/full-metal-jacket/full-metal-jacket-PDVD_00901.jpg - Where you ever in a movie called Full Metal Jacket?
Hi,
I am just curious, are you planning to implement bulk check?
For example when I need to check 50 keyworkds for particular URL? It is really hassle to go with each keyword.
Will there be a solution any time soon?
Thank you!
Sorry my first post had to be a likeness post between Great Scott and one badass actor, Vincent D'Onofrio, now about the tool.
I've been looking for a Google-friendly rank checker all day, sorry to see that this one still has the potential to inflate search volumes and would be very happy to see a DC that Google wanted us to query to keep search volumes more pure.
Now I'll actually check your tool out and provide some positive feedback...Hey, it works, no lies.
Now if I could just find one that can run and track about 1000 phrases.Keep up the good work. I'll be back.
No harm inteded Scott, I just couldn't pass it up.
BTW the phrase I checked was from a long-time competitive niche with very stable results, so I wouldn't worry about the other comments on accuracy - probably just shifty niches.
I just tried this tool for keyword route accounting (no quotes) for www.solid-innovation.com. Report is that it is not ranked in top 100 results. However, if I search Google.com with the google toolbar, same keyword shows ranking at #19. What am I mssing?
This tool would be great if it worked. We do rank #19 on Google.com but tool says not in top 100. So, I followed your suggestion and made sure I was logged out of may google account. No difference. Still not in top 100.
From reading comments of others, I see quite a few have problems and issues.
+1 Vote for multiple phrases and automated periodic checking. That would make this offering on par with many of the SERP checker software packages available as well as providing a nice chunk of historical data without requiring us to log in and perform the searches manually every few days.
Hiy guys....just got a PRO membership and am playing with tools....on google.co.za my site ranks at #11 for seo, but it doesn't show up with this tool....any ideas?
I'm experiencing discrepancies in the seomoz rank checker too. For one, it seems to be case sensitive? For instance if I do a search for morcap on Yahoo! search, https://www.morcapadvisors.com is #1. The rank checker says that it doesnt rank at all. MorCap in the rank checker shows the rank of 10 which is also not correct. Results are similar using Google search.
Hi
I'm going on a SEOMOZ tool frenzy testing them for usefullness for my company - a French e-marketing consultancy. Some are going to be useful, but others are too centered on English and Google.com - I'm not even sure if UK users can rely on some of the tools
I was therefore delighted to see the .fr option for the Rank Checker.
However my first test is giving me an incorrect result
Found on page 1, position #9 https://www.google.fr/search?q=thalasso&start=00 Looking at the page, my site is actually 8th.
Is the Rank Checker parsing the actual result page from google. Could it be getting confused by the first AdWords link which is to the left of page ?
- Neil
Just thought that it could be a problem of language.
To force a French language version of Google into French and localize AdWords to the French ones you should actually be parsing this URL
https://www.google.fr/search?q=thalasso&start=00&hl=fr&gl=fr
Neil,
This is probably something as simple as a datacenter not being updated yet. I had the same issue some months ago with my ranking, except the reverse was happening: I was ranking #9 with the tool, and I was at #33 when I did my own search.
I contacted Matt Inman about it, and he confirmed that I was just accessing a data center that had not yet been updated. Two weeks later, the results showed up on the East Coast at #9.
This could explain the discrepancy.
I'm sure this has already been thought of or suggested but it would be so useful if you could upload keyword/phrases from a csv file and have the option of rerunning it perdiodically from the list. I appreciate how resource intensive this would be so concede it would need to have a throttle on it.
Wow, I've been frequenting SEOmoz for a few months now and just ventured into the tools section. This tool is excellent. Thumbs up!
Hi guys,
I love this tool, but two things:
1) I just did some manual comparison between google serps results, the results that the tool gives me for google - they were not always the same. (not a biggie though, I guess it can't be 100% accurate all the time.)
2) I have many strong keywords with a double entry in the top ten, and it is something I am aiming for for more of our keywords. This tool wil tell me I have a#1 or #5 position, but not if I have #1 *and* #2, or #5 *and* #6 - I think this could be quite a useful addition.
thanks for a great tool.
Good to see you folks working to automate this type of query. I have been compling and tracking ranking for my former employer's web site (https://www.hrw.org/) for various key words.
Unfortunately wheh I tried using this feature today on SEOMOZ it displayed message saying site doesn't show up in top 100 sites on google. Direct query to google showed this site on #2 position (for key word - human rights). May be some thing isn't working correctly today for this script.
It would be great to expand this script to allow users to add number of key words and monitor ranking for each of them periodically. This can also contain additional feature described by Denielle in above comment.
On the whole good addition to available tools.
Keep up the good work.
Jagdish
Great tool!
Are there any plans for being able to track accross multiple data centers and also to have alerts set up or notification of history? For example, if I wanted to be notified when I hit #1 for a certain term and then track it every day and be alerted if it dips? Might be good to pre-emptively contact clients that sit on their rankings every day and hit refresh.
Geez, I sound like a development client now but thought I'd ask.
Either way, thanks for this. :)
Look like Rank Checker has come a long way since these days :-)
Hey guys,
i think seo ranking reports as we used to do them in the pass are dead.
https://turko.ca/google-webmaster-tools-ranking-checker.html
Hi guys
This is truly a great tool but what would make it absolutely awesome is if it could recheck all of your archived results again with one click - time saving and a sellable tool?
Keep up the good work
I am new to SEOmoz and while I'm finding that my keyword search doesn't put me in the top 100, it still doesn't tell me what I rank. Am I doing something wrong?
I tried to PM you with this response, but it said that you were not accepting private messages:
Meaghan,
Do you find that you actually rank for that keyword when you physically search Google?
If you do not rank in the top 100, but say, rank in the top 150 or 200, I recommend that you grab the SEOBook.com "Rank Checker" plugin for firefox, until you get into the top 100.
It's free. With regards to the keyword, if you tell me what your site is, and what you are expecting to rank for, I would be more than happy to run it, and let you know what I come up with.
Welcome to SEOMoz.
Kurt
I am having a problem with a keyword that will not show me the "since last checked" information. I check a couple other keywords and they show me this information but when i search this particular one it will not show me my change even though its changing. I can't delete it out of the history reports either.
Thanks!
Doesn't work for me.
I put in a term that I rank #1 for and my domain, and even though in the link result the page gives I am #1 the tool says i'm not even found in the top 100 results!
:/
I have been using is tool frequently for keyword rankings and with accurate results. But this month, this tool has failed me twice. The site was nowhere there when I clicked on the "View results"
I checked for "lap band" for the website ready4achange. It showed me the position as 29, which was surprising because it was a very competitive keyword. So I clicked on the "View Results" and the site was nowhere on that page.
Any idea what could have gone wrong?
Yes, I agree with Sangeeta.
Today I checked my client site rank for very competitive keyword Jual Rumah (in English = house for sale). In Google.com it said the website ranked in page 4 pos.3 but when I cheked it manually, the website ranked in pg.4 pos.10,
I hope it could be more accurate?
Google gives different information depending on the data center that you hit. Someone, on a seperate data center, is seeing you at position 33. while you are seeing it as 39.
If you are logged into your Google account, that will change things dramatically as well. The fancier Google gets with personalized results and regional targeting, the more search results will differ.
This is not a problem with the tool. Rather, Google gives vastly different information more frequently these days. The supplier of the data makes the tool less reliable, not the programming of the tool.
Firstly great tool!
I know the last posting for this was back in April but a really neat feature I would like to see would be to the ability to bulk upload mutliple keyterms and then trend my keyword performance overtime. Also having the ability to categorise my keywords would be a worthy addition.
Is this sort of functionality on the horizon?
...As an additional note, current tools such as Firefox's rank checker only reports on the first listing it finds irrespective if it is the page you were tracking the performance on. Which result does SEOmoz's checker return?
First post.
Thanks
I understand about a logging in Google and getting different results. I also understand that Google.com has a different database from Google.co.in
But shouldn't Google.com give the same result everywhere?
Using Google Analytics, I found out that most people can find my website using a combination of three keywords. However, whenever I search those keywords in google, I cannot find my site until page 23 of SERP. I wonder if anyone really scroll up to page 23 just to find my services when lots of my competitors are in pages 1 to 10.
Just today, I used this tool, and it told me that my site is at page 2 position 10 for those 3 keywords. But when I checked it on google, it's not on page 2.
Apparently, Google is giving me results different from what it provide to Seomoz. Certain web surfers really find my website using google for those three keywords, but not me. I do not know how this happens. Perhaps it's the geo targetting but I am not sure.
You need to be careful when checking the results yourself as Google tend to changes your results if you are logged in to your google account and if you have Google Web History enabled. For you to get a true result you need to log out, clear your cookies and history from your browser. Then close the browser and re-open you should see the a more true result.
I found a very useful tool called iBusiness Promoter, check it out.
Cheers
Andrew

This tool appears to be in need of work. I searched with keywords that return my site in the number 2 position on page one of yahoo . . the RankChecker said the domain couldn't be found in the first 100 records. Only the MSN result was close to real life.
Just discovered the "ronk checker" addon for firefox from seobooks - which is not great looking nor well designed (workflow/layout-wise) but appears to do the business. Better IMO than the free rank checker here (which up to today was my first go-to tool for a quick review of ranks).
Thanks for the tool in any case.
[I know this is an old thread, but it's current news for me and seems pertinent here, please don't penalise me again :o( ]
i've just installed Rank Checker but can get it to work. It says that my site does not rank in the top 100 for the keyword (Site:www.prismteam.com Keyword:Prism). When i use the link to run the search in google i find the url at position 27 on the 3rd page. Am I failing to understand something?
Any help or advice you guys have would be great.
Cheers
Jason
Hi, there.
I would have PM'd you, but it said that your profile was not accepting private messages. My guess is that you are in the UK, or perhaps another European nation. You show up @ number 5 on Google.co.uk. Your search is probably deemed as less relevant by Google, due to where your server is perceived to be located, and the ip block. Our KW rankings differ based on the specific international flavor of Google you use, and even based on the data center the results are being fed from.
I am guessing, since I repeated your search using the US version of Google, and did not find you, that your results are based on the geographic location of the user.
Enjoy the weekend,Kurt
Great tool, but like many of the others, we too are seeing some pretty large discrepencies between what the tool is telling us versus what we see by doing an actual search in Google, Yahoo or MSN. Of course, it's important to note we test other tools and many of them are really no better, so it appears. It's been difficult for us to find a very reliable keyword ranking tool that is accurate a good percentage of the time. And like the others, would love to see some responses to the many concerns here.
I've been trying this tool out and none of the checks I tried gave any results. After 3 of my websites who are in the top 20 of the serps gave 0 results back, I tried a website that's in the #1 position and even that gave 0 results back... I think there's something wrong it with since my settings seem to be correct (checked, double checked)
what would be really cool if you acually answered peoples questions on here
Here's a blog thread that offers an opinion on the legality of using robots to perform searches using Google:
https://www.theorganicseo.com/seo-software-tools/web-ceo-spyfu-seomozs-rank-checker-dishonest.html
The bottom line is the question of whether Google can legally claim that by using their services you are implicitly agreeing to their ToS, point 2.2(B) of which states exactly that. This may depend on the telecommunication laws of country in which you (or your server) resides. It seems that as Google does not provide a mechanism for making alternative arrangements - licencing the use of their search engine to companies for this end, for example - that they could be at fault.
Great tool!
However, one question - what does "By Domain" mean? For a particular website I'm checking, doing the domain search gives me different results than with the exact URL.
If I go to the results page when searching by Domain name, my website isn't listed where it was ranked.
Thanks!
Since these comments about the tool have been slipping through the cracks, we recommend emailing [email protected] with any feedback, bugs, errors, etc. that you're experiencing with the Rank Checker tool. Thanks!
How does the resulting rank reflect different data center outputs ?
is that doc'd somewhere ?
Thanks,
I've been LOVING this feature, and using it daily. This tool alone is worth paying the monthly fee. However, today I did one of my regular checks on a site I'm doing, and it says that the site has increased by 10 and is on the first page, but when I go to Google and type in the search term (or click on the google link in the rank checker) the site is still listed at #14, where it's always been. I was really stoked to see we'd jumped 10 and disappointed to see that we didn't really jump 10. What's up with that? Why is it not showing up right? It's never been wrong before.
It's a nice tool. Have a question - is it showing SERP when someone's ckecking in the States? Coz when I checked real google result, it differs a lot. (logout of personalization). Thanks.
I came across SEOmoz a few days back and its an amazing site. Keep up the good work.
However IMHO , i did not see a great value proposition in the tool. Analyzing just the top 100 results is a childs play.
Google publicly displays the top 1000 search results for any query. However the tool limits itself to just the top 100 results.Rarely do fresh off the boards websites get in the top 100 results for competitive terms.
I have been building a searchPositionAnalyzer my self by scraping google's results. And i know it become very difficult to get the #900+ results.
Any tool that gives me this sort of data(Search engine result ranked #900 to #1000) would be something i would really appreciate. The downside of creating such a tool will be that you'll have to find a way to prevent the google guys from banning you automatically.
Can you guys at seomoz analyze that deep in the SERP's ?
Any inputs would be appreciated.
Analyzing at that depth isn't worth it. You'll have to scrape way more and will get throttled by the search engines, just for the sake of monitoring rankings that get virtually no traffic.
I've been using the tool for awhile now(it's the one that converted me to premium membership).
I have discovered that I have a few pages that rank in the top 100 for several given search terms.
Would it be possible(and not incredibly taxing on your server) for the tool to show any results in the top 100, rather than just using the law of first mention?
Sorry to see you go, Matt.
I'll make sure and pass this idea onto our developers.
Another feather in the SEOmoz hat -- Good work son!
well now I have to become a premium member. 4 mins and I'm allready at the limit
Awesome. Simply awesome. Thanks guys (and gals).
Thanks for this, wow for a day's work you're going to get a lot more premium members over here!
Darn, just when I'd made up my mind to learn RoR you go and pimp CakePHP. Surely RoR creates more of a sparkly interface?
Great tool. There used to be a similar tool, but it went offline. The only thing that would make this tool better is if it would track my archive automatically. The tool I used to use updated every so many days and let you watch the rise and fall of your page's rank.
Was that the Digital Point tool? I haven't used that one in ages...gonna go check now.
Ok, just checked. The DP tool is still up and running (and my data is very old). I'd much rather use something like this from SEOmoz where I'm more of an active user.
I have used a similar tool before called Advanced WebRanking (not to be pronounced Advanced Web Wanking...not that I ever have..cough cough) Although don't tell anyone at Google ;0)
A great tool added to the features.
How about adding a feature for checking the ranking on all SE at a time for a keyword ? Or Say comparing the ranking on SE's for a Keyword ? (Maybe asking too much out of this tool)
But firstly the navigation of the website needs some usability improvement. Everytime i want to use a tool i have to go to tools page and then select a tool to use. But from that particular tools page i am not able to select another tool i want to run. (maybe can be be added in top navigation below search or below logo)
Also how about showing all the tools in the left navigation for members logged in or premium members ?
One sure Needs to kone how these tools works. It will help for better SEO of the website and getting top rankings (specially the crawl tool, term target tool and page strength tool).
BTW a good tool added for use.
Very nice tool. I'll be using this a bunch. Or at least five times a day. :)
I just tested a search term - hybrid cars on the domain omninerd.com and it showed up as position #2 on page 9. Clicking through to the Google results I actually found it on page 10, #3 result. Could this be because of different regional results? I'm accessing outside the U.S.
Could be - that or you're logged into your google account
Try turning off personalization temporarily by tacking "&pws=0" onto the end of the Google URL. Surfing from the U.S., I have you as #9 on page 9 (both in and out of my account), so it could be a localization thing.
Great tool! How deep does it crawl though? Forgive me if the answer is already posted somewhere.
It searches the first 100 search results (first 10 pages)
I had a result yesterday that scraped in at 9th on the 9th page. You feel pleased for the link, like "yes! You made it!"
Lol - yeah in the same way you feel pleased for the limping slightly dumb child who comes last at the school sports day race!
Edited for grammer
Well, when you put it that way... yeah that's about how I felt.
LMAO - I know exactly the feeling. Well put Tom_C!
Great tool! The browser button will help me to save a lot of time. Thanks!
Best part is the fact that you can use it while you are on another site quickly and easily.
I think the only thing that would be more impressive, is if the tool could pull in the meta keywords, title, or meta description tag and do a search of the first few keyword phrases automatically.
That would allow you to do quick checks while on the phone and chatting with a potential client.
"So your current designer says you are ranked in the top 10 for your keyword phrases? Hmm...."
Nice job on cleaning up the script and making it available to members on a grand scale. Well done Matt, and I hope this is just a first release and you find even more ways to make it awesome!
Man, between that free month, the new tools, and the Q&A, you're really making it hard to resist Premium Membership. Gotta see if I can persuade a client to split the bill with me.
Oh, and BTW Matt, your new icon scares me just a little.
If the rank checker icon scares you, the crawl test icon must be absolutely terrifying
Well, that too, but I meant the "Matt Angry" icon. Sometimes, the best way to deal with us coders is just to open the cage and toss us some fresh meat.
haha, oh yes - that was to dissuade the readers from requesting too many features. I think it's working. If that doesn't do the trick I'm gonna try bear mace.
His avatar is scary, but his tagline is scarier.
I think it's really the combination of the both of them that does it for me.
Yeah, I was about to say something about the crawl test icon. It's definitely attention grabbing.
Good find and thanks for sharing. this blog is in my blog top alexa ranking list thomsonchemmanoor.com
This tool is okay but it wouldn't get me to switch from my desktop application or even the Digital Point tool.
To be honest I'd be more impressed if I could post with Safari. Even version 3 doesn't work on your site. How about running that through the rapid development framework?
But I do like the way you keep adding tools and services on your site. I think my premium membership was worth it.
If you're using safari you'll have to disable the javascript wysiwig editor in your account settings. There's a link underneath the comment box.
Hi, I tried that. The problem is when I click the add comment link, nothing happens. I'm not sure why. It works in Firefox but has never worked in Safari.
Hi Matt,
I'm posting this from Safari. Thank you for fixing it!
Phat tool, you have earnt another article and link in my seo tools category (www.seoco.co.uk/seo-tools.html) write up will be done later on today.
Asked Rand this earlier, but thought I'd get everyones opinion...
Would you like to se an offline/downloadable version of the SEOmoz tools released as a software package, and would you pay for it?
For me, I'm on a yes to both.
Hmm... I'm a "no" for both. I'd rather have the SEOmoz servers ping the datacenters than my lowly cable IP. I'm sure they have more spread out resources to go undetected than I do.
Sure would love to see them in a package both offline and online.
Especially "Term Targeting SEO Tool" and "crawl test tool" running locally on my PC.
OK , i got some proper results and some not proper results .
https://www.google.com/search?q=vbulletin+templates&hl=en&start=30&sa=N
is where it shows my site www.featuredhost.com coming up for vbulletin templates, but rankchecker says not in top 100 .
The rank checker is reporting page 3, position 7 for me. Perhaps try running it again?
The script your provided does not seem to work. I run it on MS IIS 6.0, but have PHP installed and configured. Other scripts work fine.
It always returns Not found in top 100 search results. I checked the URL etc. That's not it. The script is simply not finding the URL in the SERPS.
The Script is only a "light version" of your Rank Checker at https://www.seomoz.org/rank-checker. Are you sure that you did not remove too much code? Did you test your sample source code?
You can contact me directly if you want to. My contact information are available on my "Contact" Page at Cumbrowski.com.
Thanks.
I found the issue(s). You have to have the php_curl.dll extension enabled (I knew that one and had it enabled)
extension=php_curl.dll
You also have to set:
allow_url_fopen = 1
It is by default disabled. From what it seems does the "IUSR" also require write permission to the folder where the script runs. I am not 100% sure about this one and need to test it out once more.
P.s. You could have simply returned the ranking instead of doing a redirect to the Google search results page. I changed the code of course to not redirect and to tell you the ranking on the page. Thanks you anyway, its always nice if developers publish some or all of their code to the public. It is always appreciated.
Is there a way to have this tool tell you where you are in the organic rankings? When I search for my target keyword and my domain name, the rank shows as #7 in Google - that is #7 after the ads and local results. Are you guys gonna find a way to divide it up and say okay here's where you stand in organics, or paid or local??
We'll probably just stick to organic for now, but having it eventually report paid and local would be a cool feature.
Seem to be getting incorrect results:"Custom Website Design" for:https://www.artistechnewmedia.com says it doesn't show in the top 100...But I counted by hand (actually I really don't have anything better to do at the moment) and we are 58!?What up yo?
B
I like to use firefox add on, which show PR , Alexa, Compete at the same time.
This thing is RAD! When checking for things like deep-page search engine visibility, and even just rank-tracking, the tool saves so much time.
You guys are all gonna have fun with this one :)
Ageed, and already have had some :D
That's great you guys, the time saving alone is a huge, huge plus!
Yeah, it's kind of addictive. Thanks for increasing productivity, Matt :P
I have been using the rank checker tool for some time now but today, for all of my terms it is saying that I am not in the top 100. I performed a manual search and found that my site is in the top 15.
Any suggestions how I can get this tool working again?
If you're logged into your google account you'll see different results at Google. Try logging out and repeating the search.
Hello Editor,
I just checked the ranking of Immigration Watch Canada.org on MSN and ASK and found out that our organization is not listed in the first 100. For Google, it is on Page 1 and for Yahoo, it is on Page 2.
I used the phrase "immigration to Canada" as the key word.
How do I go about getting a higher ranking with MSN and ASK?
Please reply to : [email protected]
All the best,
Dan Murray
ImmigrationWatchCanada.org
We just registered on SEOmoz today and this is one of the first tools I ran. Awesome! Thank you!
Hey WedNet,
I'm with e-Storm and I actually remember us doing some SEO for you guys back in 1999 with Mark Williams as our contact. We also probably did traditional online marketing as well.
How is WedNet doing these days?
- Daniel
Hi. Sorry, I only just logged back into SEOmoz and saw your comment. I'm so lame. :) Yes, Mark Williams is still here. This is David; Mark and I work together on WedNet.
Things are good. Just trying to grow the business.
David
Lovely stuff, Matt - after much fannying around, I finally signed up to premium membership to use this tool fully!
If you ever get a chance to develop it further, it would be great to be able to...
Cheers!
Wow. Simply put an awesome tool! Nice. I'd also be interested to hear about how you're getting around the TOS (if you are?!)
Lol - I mis-spelled the keyword for my first search, realised my domain was mis-spelled for the second and my third didn't show me anything I didn't already know.... Guess I'll need a premium account now!
Good job (again!) guys.
Loser
(Disclaimer: Tom's my brother, so I can call him that).
PS there's a conversation about the TOS above and I'd agree with Matt, that you *should* be allowed to do this (at least until they make the API better) so tough.
I think you may have just earned your first thumb down!
I agree though that until the api is better white-hat scraping should be allowed. Of course, it's difficult for anyone to tell what is white-hat and what is black-hat (who knows what seomoz are doing with the data behind the scenes!)
I already had one I think ;) You've got one now too (this could get silly!). I'm worried about my privacy rather than the data. What's Matt doing with the searches we all check...? (I'm not really worried, mozzers, don't panic).
i just tried my first one today (i swear!!!) and it told me i used up all my searches already. what gives? are you going to make me fork over the $$$?
You sure about that? I checked the DB and you ran 5 today and 5 yesterday.
i know i did 5 yesterday...furniture stuff. unless i was typing in my sleep - i don't think i did any today.
oh well...i guess i'll have to sign up and pay or wait. thanks.
Keep in mind you can run the tool 5 times a day, you don't get 5 keywords a day - so if you ran the same query 5 times you'd effectively have used up all your turns.
I'm a bastard, I know.
( :D )
Oh wait, I see what's going on. You ran 5 terms on the 13th (wednesday), then 5 terms on the 14th (thursday). The tool allows 5 terms per 24 hour period, so you won't get to run 5 more until 24 hours from when the last term was run yesterday.
oh...that's it then. okay...i think it was late in the afternoon.
if you're a bastard, you're a damn smart and nice one!
Heads up, I'm moving this thread to the "New Tool: Rank Checker" entry.
It is a great tool, and a great addition to seomoz.
This is a great tool, very handy indeed. Thanks.
Good tool. I wish you can do this with Yahoo and MSN as well. Also if you find the competitor site and the URL it would be good.
It does support Yahoo and MSN - just select it from the dropdown
Cool! Well done Matt, this tool rocks!
Guess this tool has a bug, if you search for www.artviper.net and the keyword "design studio" it says not found in top 100 - but when you do a manual check on google, we're ranked on Pos 1.
Any ideas about this?
thanks
Frank
I've been a pro member for about 8 months now and recently strarted a new job with a software development company. I've been pitching the value of the tools here at SEOmoz and even got them to send myself and one of my team members to the seminar in August. Then the first time I tried to demonstrate one of the tools it fails. It's been failing for days now and looking at this blog nobody is responding. When I search for various keywords that we appear in the SERPs for the tool is reporting not found in top 100. I understand bugs happen but not responding to the community is bad. It would be helpful to get some acknowledgement of an issue and if possible an ETA when it may be fixed.
i have tried to search for my url viteb.com using hire seo expert keywords. and there is slight ranking difference i observe here in india. this tool shows 2nd where as it on 3rd rank. i am not sure but this variation might be due to data center change.
overall result is really excellent, this tool give very quick result.
I'm still running into sporatic innacurate google rankings with this tool. I just did a search for under armour evade for www.fs4sports.com and it showed us at spot 9 page 1. This isn't the case even after logging out of my google account.
I've run the same SERPS test on 2 other sites and we don't even show up in google's results for those keywords.
Any ETA on a patch for this tool? Please?
Greetings,I am a mere guppy in the shark tank that is the Search Engine Ocean. I am attempting to use the rank checker to check out my boss' website, www.dennispaige.com, and it just says it is not found in the top 100 search results. Does that mean we are basically invisible?

Hi, there - the tool just donen´t work here over seas - like some other tool´s from seomz. Would be nice if you could fix this things..
Hey, this tool is great but it has been timing out / disconnecting a lot lately. Any hope of improvements?
Hey Guys,
nice tool, alot of other tools like this don't handle deep pages properly, so its good to see this one does.
An addition I thought would be really useful, would be to be able to set up a set of queries to be run at regular times (i.e. a set of kw, pages and G tlds to be run daily for example), so you can let it do its thing asnd simply monitor your archived results.
Sure, this might result in hitting the G servers a bit much, so you could limit it to PRO members and put a max on the number of queries you can schedule per day (or every 2 days or ...).
Nice tool none the less.
Cheers
I too have been getting errors when trying to connect to the Google and Yahoo SEO ranking tool.
Any word as to when this will be fixed?
I noticed that the Rank Checker is counting Onebox Local results as normal results.
I was checking my site www.perfect-pictures.info for the term "wedding photographer brighton", for which we are 3rd in local results but not currently page 1 for main results. However Rank Checker shows this up as Page 1 #3!
Here is the SERP, although not sure if the local results are geo-specific.
Edit: Also, it would be great to enter multiple keywords at once, although I appreciate this could create server load issues / google scraping bans for you. Any comments on that?
It's a jolly tool, right enough!
Should someone require something less free (alas) but considerably more in-depth (hurray), then I have one to suggest.
I grant you this is a blatant plug, but it couldn't possibly be more on topic, so I hope it's not a disgraceful plug! (note to moderators at the bottom of this message, btw.)
I used to work for an SEO, and the reporting (on a large scale) was almost unmanageable with the software solutions available.
When I left the company some years ago, I got together with an ex-colleague and we designed a Search Engine Result monitoring service from scratch, specifically for SEOs, created to avoid all the pitfalls of the existing software on the market.
We don't do submission, purely reporting. Our service has been running for a couple of years now - it's called Interwebbing.
It allows monitoring of the SERPs of all the major engines, for multiple sites, with mirror domains, for hundreds of keyphrases.
The reports are generated on our servers, automatically, according to whatever schedule you set, so you can add a client to our server and then just leave it alone and go on holiday for ten years - the reports will keep on coming.
The basic reports themselves show the position gained by each phrase in each engine, the position attained by each of up to three competitor sites, and the fluctuation from previous weeks.
These reports are stored on our server, and you can choose to have them automatically emailed to destinations of your choice (such as your customer, for example!). Any such emails the system sends will appear to come from your email address, and the reports themselves hold your company branding - we are invisible.
In addition to the email option, you can allow or deny your customers access (on a per-client basis) to their own control panel, where they can view their report schedule, view old reports, and change any options you have not locked down. You have complete control over the level of access you allow to your customers. Again, this control panel area is branded entirely as yours.
The whole service is server-based, thus accessible from wherever. It's not tying up your computers, not using your bandwidth for queries, and it's not getting your IP blocked.
You have a control panel of your own from which you can add, edit and remove clients, and control every aspect of the service they receive. As well as always being able to see all the reports You also get a unique management overview, which lets you see which of your clients promotions are performing the best, and which need attention.
The reports are all very well, but if you need more in-depth information, we have it. You can view reports in grid format, listed by keyphrase, for starters. Then we have the executive reports control panel which lets you run detailed queries on the most recent SERPs data we hold for any client. You can view lists of positions filtered by performance level (top 1, top 20, etc), for any or all search engines, ordered by phrase or by engine. You can further choose to only list improving positions, declining positions or even phrases without any results at all.
If you are more the visual type, then you can view your data with the on-demand graphing feature, allowing you to show the positions over whatever date range you require, filtered by your choice of search engines, and zoomed in to any level from top 30 to top 10. Below every graph there is a table containing the same data, for clarity and so that you can copy/paste it into your own applications if you require. Remember that this facility, as with everything else, is something you can allow your customers to access if you wish.
There are lots of other little bits of information we provide. Google indexation levels, overall search engine coverage, report summaries and more. For the competitive types amongst you, we even provide a tool which will show you the list of your strongest competing sites for a given search phrase - live.
Oh, naturally, the standard reports (from which all this data has come) are available as .CSV downloads, so if you have some extremely specific requirements, you can take the data and import it into your own applications.
Of course, for some people, all this power will be overkill. It doesn't matter. The basic reports are the core of the service, and although there is no extra charge for all the other facilities, you don't have to use them if you don't need them!
The thing is, you don't need to be an SEO to use the service. Anyone with multiple sites to monitor will find life a whole lot easier if they use us.
https://www.interwebbing.com is our site (perpetually pending an update as new features are constantly being added).
We currently have a couple of hundred SEOs on the books, so we think we are doing some things right!
Certainly worth a look.
Dear Moderator chaps: I've seen more than a few legit self-plugs on here, so I think I'm not being naughty, however if it's going to be unacceptable for me to pop up here and there to try to sell my company's services, even when strictly on-topic, please tell me and I will instantly stop, and say "sorry", in a really sincere tone of voice. Thanks!
is this what you call "spamming on the square"?
Interwebbing,
You'll probably also notice that any self-promotion around her (particularly of a blatantly commercial nature) tends to get a noticible bundle of 'Thumbs-Down'. Sounds like you've got an interesting service - we provide something very similar for clients - but this is a rather lengthy shill on your part, despite you clearly having the best of intentions and not wanting to put anybody off.
Not to mention that he created an account and left only two replies, both of which were "jolly ol' self plugs. But you blokes are all ok with this, right? If not, well shame on me."
And then we never hear from him again (which is ok, his profile was so polite it was creepy).
Terribly sorry to have been creepily polite, old bean!
I've not been back on here until now, Lax of me, I know.
To be frank, there's not a great deal I can contribute in the area of actual promotion - any promotion work I did was right during the infancy of the profession, and embarassingly simple. Nothing I know from then is of any value at all, now. If I can answer any questions about reporting, I shall, but there's not really much to it!
And self plugs do get a hard time, but in a thread about a reporting tool, wherin alternatives are mentioned, just how wrong is it to mention another alternative? Just because it's mine doesn't invalidate it - although it's reasonable to take any claims about shinyness and niceness with a pinch of salt, as anyone plugging their own product is likely to not be 100% objective. That's what the free trial is for.
Thanks, Great Scott.
It was a bit wordy, wasn't it. I am rubbish at being concise.
I quite genuinely don't wish to 'advertise', no matter how unconventionally, in a place where it would be inappropriate. I do however think that there's a bit of woolly thinking out there, in which it would be fine for one of our customers to pop up and say "wooo, try interwebbing, it is very nice indeed" but very evil for me to do it myself! Periodically, you see people on forums who are clearly salesmen posing as customers of their own employer - I didn't want to insult anyone by going down that route. We actually do have something relevant to offer, and I don't think deception helps anyone!
Is it really against ettiquette to say 'I do that too, have a gander?'
See, even this was longer than I wanted it to be!
Maybe I'm missing something but I don't see what the free version of this tool offers over Shoemoney's serps script. It's actually worse for me as there's not an option for checking all the search engines at once.
I'm gonna go out on a limb here and guess that you didn't read the actual blog entry or even try out the tool.
Here's the feature list:
