As many of you who read this blog know, I'm a terrible self-promoter. I actually feel guilty writing about, linking to and promoting the products and services that make payroll for the amazing SEOmoz staff and allow us to conduct cool research, produce awesome guides and build out spiffy office space. But, every few months, I manage to crawl out from under that shell. This time, it's by request.
I've been hearing from a lot of our PRO members that they feel both overwhelmed and confused by all the offerings in PRO. I know it's tough when there are 30+ pages on which unique types of PRO content exist and even the dashboard doesn't link to all of them (that's our fault for bad organization - I promise it's getting better by the end of summer). Hence, this post is all about what to do in your first 15 minutes inside PRO to get lots of value that can actually move the needle on your SEO actions and search traffic.
Step 1: Find Your Big Missed Opportunities via Top Pages
When you run a report in Open Site Explorer, click to the "top pages" tab and browse through the list of the most-linked-to pages on your domain. You're looking for two things - any troubling codes (302, 40x, 50x) and pages that have lots of links, but aren't targeting competitive keywords for relevant search traffic. In the former instance, you want to get those pages up and pointing to the right place. In the latter case, you need to run that page through OSE, determine who's linking to it and with what anchor text (there's a tab for that, too), then see if you can put together good content to match the links & ranking ability. You can do all that, later - for now, just export the list to CSV, or make a note to revisit.
Elapsed time: 3 minutes
Step 2: Crawl 3,000 Pages on Your Site and ID Potential Errors
The new Custom Crawl Prototype will mimic a search engine spider and crawl up to 3,000 pages on any domain, then email you with a CSV of the results in 24 hours. It identifies duplicate content issues, HTTP headers, missing titles & meta descriptions, and many more potential SEO pitfalls. Get a report on a site or two and dig into the results tomorrow.
Elapsed time: 3 minutes 30 seconds
Step 3: Run Keyword Difficulty Reports for Your Top 5 Keyword Targets
How tough, relatively speaking, are the keywords you're chasing and where might easy opportunities exist? Keyword Difficulty can help answer this question and provides a terrific CSV export of the top 25 sites/pages ranking for any query with metrics for each. Often just a report or two can help you identify keyword targets where small quantities of links or optimization effort can take you a long way. They're also ideal for showing management/clients exactly how far you have to go to catch up with the competition.
Elapsed time: 7 minutes
Step 4: Uncover Some Easy Link Targets with Link Intersect
Tom Critchlow and I call the Link Intersect Tool "cheating," because it's just too easy to find good link opportunities. Plug in your site and at least 2 (up to 5) competing sites (or just sites that you think have relevant/acquirable links) and it spits back a list of sites, pages and metrics that link to 2+ of the competitors but don't link to you. It's like shooting links in a barrel! (that's a thing, right?)
Elapsed time: 11 minutes
Step 5: Sign Up for a Webinar (or Download a Past Presentation)
I've personally run a dozen 60-90 minute webinars for our PRO members on topics ranging from "reverse engineering the SERPs" to "competitive link building" to "actionable analytics" and more. The feedback we get on these is overwhelming positive and we're running two each month (one with a specific content focus and another reviewing members' sites). The webinar archives contain video+audio downloads of the presentations plus a link to register for upcoming ones. If you like a more interactive/participatory learning environment, these are a great option.
Elapsed time: 12 minutes
Step 6: Track Rankings on a Few Dozen Key Terms/Phrases
My recommendation is to Track Rankings for 10-20 key terms you're targeting, a handful of mid-range "nice-to-haves" and a healthy helping of long-tail keywords to help give a sense of how you're performing across the keyword demand curve. When traffic fluctuates, it's great to be able to see if rankings were the cause, or if other factors (demand, downtime, errors, analytics capture problems, etc.) could be the culprit. The best part about the current rank tracking system is the ability to choose between multiple engines on any TLD (and to select "entire subdomain" so it catches any page from your site in the top 50 results).
Elapsed time: 15 minutes
OK, your quarter-hour is up, but so are your chances for a lot more search traffic in the next few weeks and months. When you're ready to devote some more time, you can install the mozbar, check if any deals in the Discount Store are relevant/useful, distribute some PRO Guides to your compatriots, give Trifecta a spin, watch some PRO Whiteboard Videos, ask a question in Q+A, review the hundreds of PRO Tips, leverage the Link Acquisition Assistant to find some sexy new link opportunities, dig around in Labs, well... you get the idea.
And, as a tease, here's an early comp of what we've been busy with in 2010:
ETA: Late this summer :-)
I would like to see more posts like this one esp. those which focuse on application of these tools. I think you should do more such self promotion, if not on blog then through newsletter. At least send an annocument via email whenever a new tool is launched. I sometimes miss blog posts here and thus announcement of new tools or features. And you may be right that pro members (including me) are confused by all the offerings in PRO. I just discovered the advantage of using 'Top Pages'feature in OSE and discovered the new tools 'link intersect' and 'Link Acquisition Assistant'. Regarding rank tracker, I think it would be more beneficial, if we could track ranking of multiple keywords in one go. How do you calculate 'keyword difficulty'? What is the advantege of using 'SiteIntelligence Service API' and 'online non-linear regression' tools? Both are over my head.
Then you would be interested in this SEOmoz post on how to apply the pro AND free tools! One of my favorite posts. I actually used much of the info in there to put together a business requirements doc in order to get my company to pay for the pro membership!
It's good to be Pro!
The updates to Ranktracker look like they are going to be great. We currently are exporting our Ranktracker week to week into an Access database, but to have all that stuff inside SEOMoz would cut out a step and allow us to visualize our work more easily. So cheers to that!
And I never noticed the custom crawl. Submitted our site already...my guess is the SEOMoz spider will be busy tonight!
Surely it will be... but I can assure it works great and very fast, even if it advice it needs some time to crrawl the site, you receive the .csv in your inbox far before than you are going to imagine.
I was wondering if SEOmoz has any plans for building tools aimed towards local search optimization / Google Places / reputation management / etc. ?
Since SEO is about gaining business visibility through search engines and Google seems to be increasingly placing their Local Business Results at the top of results pages, local search optimization has become a key element for businesses large and small.
I'd love to see what your team would come up with if they spent some time focusing on local.
Would anyone else like to see more local content and tools?
We do have a plan to make it a tab/section inside the new "all-in-one" platform, but likely January-February 2011 before we launch. One thing we very much want to do is some serious statistical analysis of ranking elements in local search (so we can make the right kinds of recommendations and tracking happen).
Thank you, Rand.
Thats a good news Rand. Thanks.
Being a relatively new PRO member (I am just about to start my 3rd month). I have to say your information is quite helpful.
I have done most of the tasks that you indicate above (and then some) but one of the ones that I was not aware of was the Competitive Link Finder. I will be testing it this afternoon and I really hope it works as good as it sounds.
I will have to say that I am very happy with my PRO membership (as it has made many of my tasks easier and provides me with a wealth of information that I did not previously have), however I was disappointed by the "Juicy Link Finder" (I actually got some funny looks from my wife when she looked at my laptop screen). Before becoming pro, the Juicy Link Finder was one tool that I was really excited about and it totally did not work. I was not able to test it before going PRO and the results were identical to google. I got the same information from doing a google search for my targeted key words.
I was told that this was a rather old tool and some new things were in the works. Hopefully the competive link finder will provide me the info I am looking for.
Besides that, all of the other tools are more than worth the monthly cost of admission.
Thanks for the post.
Agreed - Juicy Link Finder is an old tool that hasn't been updated in a while. The Link Acquisition Assistant & Link Intersect tool are excellent candidates to replace it, but we've been sacrificing a lot of needed upgrades in favor of the larger overhaul project coming this summer.
Appreciate the feedback - please feel free to ping us with additional comments or suggestions anytime.
I am a bit on the fence about the quality of the link finding tools. I haven't played around with Juicy Link Finder much because I had the same reaction you did. Maybe I should give it another chance. The Link Acquisition Assistant in the Labs section is also helpful but I was kind of disappointed at the weight given to directory-oriented queries. The way it's made is convenient (just click through the list of queries) and I have gotten some links through it though. I do really like the Competitive Link Finder.
I think no matter what, link building is going to be tough. The most valuable link building "tools" on this blog are to me the blog entries written by SEOMoz staff and YOUMozzers. The tips and strategies there are extremely helpful. I'm interested to see what future link building tools SEOMoz might provide (especially now that they are out of the consulting business and can spill more secrets >:D ) but link building is a) tough b) time consuming and c) expensive so for only the price of a membership, I'm not sure what kind of tools can be reasonably provided. I won't be refusing any silver bullet link apps though...:P
less of a post, and more of an advertisement for the non pro's amongst us (seriouslys guys, why havent you signed up yet!!)
but - that stuff coming soon looks damned sexy - can I get a beta preview ;-)
I have to fully agree with MOGmartin, as I was following through the OP's advice (neigh advertisement), it would indeed be cool to offer say "30-days FREE" as opposed to the money back option.
Living in Thailand too - you have to factor in that the relative cost to me here is in fact 5.75 times higher than you lucky folk in the U.S., owing to our relatively low 'Purchasing power parity'. So what may only be a measly $79 to YOU, actually represents a whopping 5.64% of an average Thai person's ANNUAL gross income.
I can only speak for myself here but I'm sure there are many like minded souls who are loyal to respectable, noteworthy organizations (such as SEOmoz) and so if one were able to actually evaluate "PRO" for "30-days FREE" instead of paying in advance; if it's as good as you say it is then I think you (SEOmoz) would develop such an incredible rapport with your prospective clients that you would gain their trust and enjoy appreciative, undying support until someone else usurps your position in this industry.
From where I'm looking, I'm thinking you're going to have the best 'buggy whip' for many a year...so what have you got to lose?
Can I apply for the first "30-day FREE" membership then please?
With MUCH respect,
Tui

Ive followed SEOmoz for a while now and you wouldnt believe the amount of times Ive taken my credit card out of my wallet and then not gone ahead with signing up. I think this post combined with meeting some of the Distilled bunch last week may have just convinced me to finally jump on board.
So maybe you’re not as bad a self-promoter you think you are.
p.s. imagine if you could calculate how many people take their credit cards out and then decide not to purchase. Future of analytics right there!
"may have just convinced me..." So did you?
I am definitly going to do it. Ive got enough small projects and funds together now to justify it.
The only reason Im not going to do it today is because Im off on holiday for two weeks in July so wouldnt make sense considering its a monthly subscription.
This will give me one last shot to convince my boss to buy it instead as well :)
Just remember that the monthly fee is going to rise, as it was announced some posts ago.
Hi Rand,
I am a future Pro member and if it's right that it maybe overwhelming then as well as this post you could add some screen shots of the Dashboard (it redirects no pro members to the pro landing page) and some shots of other areas within the site.
In sales we start of by telling a person exactly what is about to happen to them and that way they are prepared :)
I hit the landing page all the time (dreaming of pro membership) and I think it lacks info myself :(that might just be the seo in me wanting all the facts)
Wow... the preview shot of the future PRO tools enhancement looks great.
The fact to have some sort of Control Panel showing you many of the tools one has actually to check one by one is first of a time saver and, secondly, makes more intuitive to have a all-in-one view of what's going on with your site.
I'm especially glad to see the Ranking Summary in the snapshot, as the actual one was showing simply the ups and down and to check the historical is quite uneasy. Are you going to improve also the email delivery of these datas making it more appealing and easy for a one-look check?
Finally, two questions about the Pro Tools:
1) Is it normal that not english keywords that very competitive in their language usually receive a % of difficulty that is rarely above "Moderately Competitive"?
I think that this is right if we take english as the base of the % calculation and also because Linkscape is dominated by english based links, but it is somehow falsyfing the reality. It would be interesting if it could be find away to give to not english keywords the right weight;
2) Again, from a not english point of view, the Step 4 (Competitive Link Finder) is something that I run in parallel with the Labs "Link Adquisition Assistant" tool. Would be great if it was given the opportunity to choose the language (therefore the territorial SERPs) we want the search is done. I think it is a not so difficult upgrade to the tool, as it would be needed to change this: https://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=Italia+Business+Directory
into this:
https://www.google.it/search?hl=it&q=Italia+Business+Directory
Ciao
Is it possible that the keyword tracking report that is coming up later in the summer could be white labelled so that we can use it to give to our clients?
Similar to the way campaign monitor does reports in PDF format for emails sent out using the system.
This would be a useful addition for many pro-members I suspect.
Good summary indeed. For those who aren't pro members yet, then this post will certainly convince you to become one.
Great post, I like little tidbits like this. Instead of having to figure out the strengths behind the product, you let us know. This is often times the failure of the beefy product - it has many features, but because the users are not intuitive enough to figure out it's uses, it becomes more of a clunker than a functional interface.
By offering ways to inform us of the multiple uses of each feature ALONG with the "here's the product, go use it" thought process, you maximize the likliehood that we like your product, evangilize it, and spread it to the world.
Wooow... really exciting this last screenshot! Hope to test it soon =)
Rand, you forgot to mention about your API... we can merge your data with our own (like conversion and other stuff).
I am not sure connecting with the API is something the average Pro member would do in their first 15 minutes.
:)
Great job guys. I think your decision to focus on software will payoff handsomely. I can't wait until the release and please count me in if you are looking for Beta users.
i think every Pro and not Pro member would love to beta test the new tools.
Marketing tips:
WOW, excellent viral contest. SEO's demonstrating how they use SEOmoz Pro tools in their real world work. Most informative and transparent post wins their pro membership for a year or maybe a pass to a conference or something else. To help in the sales of pro memberships, SEOmoz then posts a page with links to the top 20 or x number of blog posts submitted. This is a win, win, win. SEOmoz sells memberships, blog owner gets lotsa traffic and some links, non-pro members get to see the tools in action in multiple real world situations.
Can't see how that could fail.
Great ideas. I second this motion :)
I want that new tool :)
Your posts extolling the virtues of PRO tools are always welcome Rand. As I tend to get into ruts with software (just using the few things I know about and know how to use), it's always of benefit when you have these types of posts.
I'd love to see at least one PRO tools post a month. It would go a long way in encouraging me to use all of the features offered.
Hi Rand,
One more self-prmotinal but more useful post from your side. The new tool looks great. I am really excited and happy that I am a pro here. This post will definitely induce the members to turn pro, I believe.
Good post Rand!
Great post! Your new tools look amazing....can't wait
How can I get so excited about the look of new software? So wrong...but oh so right!
I can't explain how much I want and need a PRO membership. Jason at work is going to be buying one soon, I regularly use Open Site Explorer but it's obviously limited when I only have a basic membership here on SEOmoz.
Thanks rand, the Pro membership is so worth it...big thumbs up
I still need to read through these comments but I'm too excited! Will some of those comps at the end of your post grow into working demos by September's 1/2 day tool training (e.g. Pro Series Training Aug 30-Sep1)?
That's for sure very useful tools. Pro membership is worth it...
Good post. I recently signed up for PRO and it's been really useful. This post informed me of some other tools that PRO offered that I didn't know about! Thanks!
Thank you. Even though tools are often used still needed an insight from your perspective. Keep up the good work.
Preet
I am very excited about the improved "keyword ranking" tool for tracking rank over time. Will this 'ranking summary' section be subdomain, or account-wide for all keywords tracked?
thx for the great quick initial workflow Rand
Tony
Thank you x3!
I did feel overwhelmed by all the great pro tools. Extremely helpful post.
....and the preview of upcoming tools is amazing. Looking forward to that.
Thanks to all at SEOMOZ.
As a current PRO member, I'm pleased with the membership but I feel that this content should be in the Go PRO page as it'd make other people want to get it even more. Plus it's a lot more valuable than what you currently have - just saying y'know.
That coupled with the constant thought of:
"Is Rand wearing that same shirt that he did last WF?" :P
Thanks again for such an informative site, we couldn't keep up with current trends without it
Looks like the PRO MEMBERS are a happy and excited people *consider*
I also want the new tools. Altough I should familiarize better with the existing tools!! : )
Great walkthrough Rand. I'm a new member and found this absolutely helpful in getting started with SEOmoz.
Thanks!
I totally deserve to get access to a private beta... please. pretty pretty please.
I was just wondering where to start on a new project and seeing this has given me the start I needed!
Thanks, great post as always
