Call me a purist, but when I do a search for something like "the killers mr. brightside music video," I don't want 29 of the 30 search results to be of some a-hole teenager lip-synching to the damn song. You may think your video is cool, Mr. A-Hole Teenager, but it's not. It doesn't have Eric Roberts in it. Only The Killers' music video does. And where is said music video? #18 out of 20 at the bottom of the first page.
Likewise, the query "lazy sunday" brings up this crap, with the original SNL sketch being a needle in the haystack of awful spoofs (not that the original is funny, but still):
Yes, I know that lots of videos may have been yanked due to copyright infringements and whatnot, but it's safe to say that I'm probably not looking for the crappy spoof of it. If I wanted a crappy spoof of something, my search query would be "crappy spoof of __________." PUT DOWN THE VIDEO CAMERA, BORED TEENAGER. YOUR SPOOF WILL NOT BE FUNNY OR ORIGINAL.
Google, I challenge you to figure out a way to read each searcher's mind and either note in the search results that the requested video was pulled or serve up the relevant YouTube video in the top spots instead of burying it under a mountain of junk. You know, just like you do with your search engine queries! Er, wait a minute...
This is my pet peeve but I didn't think anyone else noticed this. Awesome.
There are two types of these stupid videos: one is the terrible cover/performance of the song you're looking for and the other is the "me messing around singing a song" video. The best is when it is a 30 second video of someone singing along in a car.
My other favorite thing about searching for music videos is when there are ten japanese anime videos mixed with the song. I really need to see that.
I was actually thinking about this the other day while trying to locate a music video of Justin Timberlake dressed as a young Elton John.
It was work-related.
No, really.
Your idea for tagging videos is a good one, but I think it should be community-based. Any idiot will classify his god-awful Little John impersonation as a "Music Video" or "Live Performance" if you leave it up to him.
YouTube is the best - tru dat, double true...
If you want YouTube to change maybe you should have been the one droppin Hamiltons like Aaron Burr...
Try perhaps a real video search engine, like Blinkx ;) https://www.blinkx.com/results?query=lazy%20su...
Hi Rebecca,
I feel your pain, earlier today I was looking for that same video. As you pointed out it doesn’t appear in the results, or anywhere on YouTube. After not finding it on YouTube (but finding all of those parodies) I tried this search :
https://www.google.com/search?q=lazy+sunday+vi...
If you click on the 2nd result, the YouTube link, you get this message:
"This video has been removed due to terms of use violation."
Hope this isn’t a sign of things to come, but it might be, if you click on the 1st result, nbc.com, you can find the video but with this message above it:
"Now, instead of searching the web for "borrowed" NBC highlights, you can go to the source! We've taken your viral favorites and gathered them into one convenient location. Watch. React. Tell a friend"
Wow NBC, way to take back what is yours… I find it amusing that they call them "viral favorites", as if everyone that found it is a marketer at heart and understands that as a buzz word and not a computer virus…
Was borrowed really in quotation marks? That's funny...
YES!!!
https://www.nbc.com/Video/videos/snl_1432_narn...
My goodness you're picky. I really don't think YouTube is designed to, nor can it function as a video search service. It's more about creating and watching "viral" videos.
BTW - If you want to find all those originals that aren't being yanked for copyright violation, I hear MetaCafe and DailyMotion are much less strict about pulling down content.
Not picky, just love a good rant every now and then. Thanks for the suggestion, btw.
I may be in the minority, but I don't go to YouTube (there, happy Matt?) to browse around for an hour in order to get entertained. I usually have a sole objective, namely "I want to find X." Therefore, my search is frustrating because I have a lot of roadblocks in the way.
Some sort of categorized search result could be helpful. For example, if you type in a band and a song, the following sub-categories could pop up:
Music Videos Live performances Fan submissions
Then the user can click on what's most relevant for him or her.
though the communities there have the mentalities of 5 year olds :(
It's "YouTube," one word.
Your ways sounds like: YOU (PAUSE) TUBE
PLANET (PAUSE) ARIUM
For the record, the original lazy sunday video was damn funny.
There, I fixed it. But I still don't think Lazy Sunday was very funny.
I'll concede that the west coast version sucked
I absolutely loved Lazy Sunday, as well as the earlier stuff from "the dudes", www.thelonelyisland.com
(for others search on YouTube for "awesometown")
I used to look for music videos on AOL, until for one reason or another it stopped working (keeps asking me to install an activeX plugin or whatever). I switched to MSN, but their selection is kinda limited. So now its either that, or good-old Limewire. Too bad music.aol.com doesn't have a feedback link/form/email because for music videos they were the best
On YouTube, I just look for hot-lookin' chicks lipsynching :)
I think the query results will improve once Google implements thier own algorithm on YouTube.
