First off, a huge thanks to everyone who contributed to our search for a new tagline. Many of the suggestions made us laugh and several were truly outstanding. I've compiled the cream of the crop - ones that we like best from our submissions and those of our readers - and put together a poll.
Sorry - the poll has been closed!
Thanks for your help - the new tagline will be part of the new SEOmoz website, now scheduled to launch (ahead of schedule) just before Pubcon in November.
Those have to be the weakest choices of taglines.
;-0
I got it! (from tfbpa's post) "We know our SEO." Or how about "The School of SEO" or "The College of SEO" (I like these better than "nurturing"), or I'm biased about the title from my Marketing Pilgrim essay, "The Power of SEO." OK. That's all. I have 3 little boys who are waiting for their dinner.
LOL, I like the added/edited personal touch!
Have to say - this is the most negative feedback we've gotten on an idea since inception. Maybe we'll have to go back to the drawing board, although I personally love both "The Daily SEO Show" and "There's no Place Like Search" - to me, they instantly suggest to the reader a sense of fun, a not-too-serious approach, a connection to pop culture and the idea that we're a community, rather than a company.
Rand ... who are you trying to appeal to? SEOs who visit this blog or your future Fortune 500 clients?
If it's the SEO community then yes, a fun, community-like tag line works.
If you're using this for your future clients, they can care less about "community tag line" ...... even though I am big on community when it comes to selling to consumers.
In this case it's a different story.
Sometimes when companies sit down to create a slogan or a tag line ... they put too much "logic" into it. Instead just make it simple and understandable.
If the tag line you're creating has to appeal to the prospective client ... all it has to do is convey a benefit or something that will separate you from the herd.
Rand ... why am I explaining this to you? You know this stuff, you're a marketer. Straighten this thing out and create something better.
Good luck.
One of the things about becoming a great marketer is recognizing limitations. On this subject, Igor, I'd guess that you may very well be better versed than I. I've been involved (mostly on the peripheral) of a few tagline creation projects, and certainly have my own opinions about what works and what doesn't (and know which pieces of evidence tend to favor and oppose my point of view), but this alone does not make me any kind of expert.
Who are we appealing to? You. SEOs and marketers and web developers. The people who read this blog and use our tools and enjoy our articles are the ones this tagline is being created for - something that can represent our community together in a positive, fun way. Something that instantly communicates the style and substance of what you'd expect to find at SEOmoz.
The only thing I do know about taglines is - create expectations and fulfill them. It's basically the universal rule in business & marketing as a whole.
You want a tagline that reeks of style and subtance - what's wrong with my, "International Search Marketing Consultants?" It has style, it has class, it has mystery and worldliness. It has authority and power. And with a photo of you and your team dressed to the nines like a James Bond poster, you'll have SEO Fangirl and the whole SEO world signing up for your version of Search Engine Strategies conferences around the globe!
something that can represent our community together in a positive, fun way
he didn't say "style and subtance"...
Yes he did. The last sentence in the second to last paragraph says, Rand wrote:Something that instantly communicates the style and substance of what you'd expect to find at SEOmoz.
Oops, he sure did...
Must have missed it because the words "style and substance" are not the first words that come to mind when thinking about SEOmoz.
I rather think of it as a place where good, up-to-date and personal information is shared by friendly people who know their SEO stuff in a down to earth way.
Now if only I could re-phrase those feelings in a tagline...
None. The Daily SEO Show copies Jon Stewart. If You Optimize They Will Come copies Field of Dreams. Theres No Place Like Search copies the Wizard of Oz. More Traffic is bland. Nurturing Search Marketers Worldwide, while true - I don't know, sounds too nurturing. Like a pig suckling from his mom.
Hahaha, "sounds too nurturing" ...
Sorry but I don't like any of the ones listed in poll. Just my opinion of course so I vote "none of the above."
How about "I have 3 little boys who are waiting for their dinner"
Abstract marketing
Rand,
One thing that I value about the SEOmoz Blog, that gets even me to visit daily, is the fact that you go beyond "rehashing" all the ordinary news that everyone else blogs about (no offence intended).
Although not as concise nor active as the SEOMox blog, I myself try to write about topics that are different, that interest me personally and/or that I find my users will be interested in. You and your staff seem to do the same.
Therefore why not have a tag line along the lines of "A Search Marketing Resource Beyond the Ordinary" because that is what SEOMoz is to me - something different and of value.
Just a thought.
Rand! What's the news... possibility of another round of brainstorming or reconsideration of previous submissions?
We've talked about it a bit internally, but need to revisit it formally as a group. I think we might wait until Rebecca's back in town from London (and after Pubcon).
How considerate! Thanks!
Thanks for voting for my "More traffic" slogan. I'm looking forward to the nice link on your about us page Rand. ;))) However, I understand there are lot of negative comments regarding the short list, so I’m going to have another go.
I’m a great fan of Al Ries of “The 22 immutable laws of branding” fame, an amazing book by the way. According the Ries “One of the most important conceptual ideas in marketing is “owning a word in the mind.” For example, BMW owns “driving.” Mercedes-Benz owns “prestige.” Volvo owns “safety.” BMW use the word “driving” to create they wonderful slogan “Ultimate Driving Machine”.
What word does SEOmoz “own” in consumers minds, or what word does it want to “own”? My suggestion would be “optimisation”. You want to optimise content, optimise sites, optimise link building, etc., the end result of which is “More Traffic”, hence my slogan. But someone was right in selling that traffic is not the objectives, sales are. So SEOmoz aim is also to optimise conversion. So my new attempts are:
Optima-Nation™ The Optimisation Experts™ Sites Endlessly Optimised™ Sites Entirely Optimised™ Better results everyday™ The world's most loved SEO agency™
Sorry i fogot to say that i still like - More traffic
Hi,
Any idea when the SEOmoz tagline is going to be decided? I'm looking forward to my link. :)
j.
Rand, it just hit me so I came to check if you hit a winner yet. (Guess not!)
SEOMoz: Great minds link alike
oh oh that's good! That and SERP's UP! are both totally creative and fun, though SERP's UP! prolly doesn't fit this site as well
I like SERP's UP! better than any of the ones in the poll. It portrays not too serious (surfer types) and doesn't copy any already established brand or movie.
RMC, great minds think alike makes me think of no dissagreement or discussion. Seems close minded.
I've been wrong before...
He actually wrote "Great minds link alike" which I thought was rather clever.
Ah, indeed he did. That really does make all the difference. You know I've been meaning to learn how to read but things have just been so busy lately...
ROFL
No winner, I vote blank.
Bunch of autistics gheesh! ;)
I voted, but like many others, think that these options make SEOmoz seem a bit cheesy and less of the "meat and potatoes" resource that I know it is. I guess I think of this site as more of a professional atmosphere than "the daily seo show" or "there's not place like search". The other options just feel a bit forced.
Maybe SEOmoz - "we don't need no stinking tagline"?
Rand,
As the above comments have demonstrated, I think everybody thinks you guys should give it another shot. If you are very fond of these, try offering a "none of the above" and notice how many vote for it. I think most people voted for the lesser of four or five evils, or just as a joke (whoever voted for no place like search had to be joking!).
Like you say, each to their own, but I didn't think any of the options were that great. It would have been nice to be able to vote for 'none of the above'
Not just because you didn't choose any of mine of course (!), but I'd also go with "none of the above". They're just a bit cheesy (imho).
I didn't really think any of the options you guys went with are strong enough, so I vote "blank".
Now it's Ok for me. Now i am able to see updated poll on blog home page https://www.seomoz.org/blog.php
Hi Randfish,
I am experiencing problem for this post. On https://www.seomoz.org/blog.php page for this post, I am seeing old poll of "Which Search Engine / Property is Most Likely to Take Market Share from Google?"
And when i open permanent link for this post https://www.seomoz.org/blogdetail.php?ID=1498,...I am able to see right poll that is of "Favorite SEOmoz Tagline?"
Is there any problem on my side? I have just think to bring this to your attention. I am regular reader of SEOMoz and love it.....
I like "Nurturning Search Marketers Worldwide", agree wtih "simmal tree" to maybe drop the worldwide. I like this one the best because this is exactly what you have done for me! I have found SEOmoz extremely useful for developing my SEO skills. You guys could do nothing wrong in my eyes =)
Echoing what other people seem to be saying - I'm not a fan of any of those. They're all a bit cheesy or bland.
I like the Daily SEO Show except it's not really yours is it? I was hoping SEOmoz would have something unique and original rather than copying someone else....
So far no clear winner. I think you should go back to the drawing board.
If it is more for us readers then I think the empazise should be swifted towards the community. Even though we readers only post comments and no articles, I do think most of us experience some sort of community feeling.
Some ideas:
Helping you rise Giving it back SERP's UP! The SEO Community SEOmoz, here to help No need for anything else You, me and the Mozzers The Moz of Search The Moz of SEM Keep on Mozzing Mozzing all the way
They are no killers, but maybe this will help with brainstorming and you know that you cannot critize anybody when doing a brainstorming session! :-)
Ooh... I likey!
Maybe not for SEOmoz, but I likey!
Good ones, tfbpa! I really like Keep on Mozzing but I'd add an ! and maybe italacize it like:
Keep on Mozzing!
Another vote for none of the above.
Where is the check box for "None of the Above" ?
I agree with tomc, ciaran, and Mintyman. I hold this blog in a pretty high regard. I would personally not like to see any pseudo copying (i.e. got moz? the daily seo show, if you optimize ... etc). Also, a tagline that is more edgy than traditional would reinforce my feeling of SEOmoz in general. This effectively eliminates the other options on this list (IMO of course)
I still think "Your Internet Potential." and "Market Wise." were better choices, but each to his/her own.
I don't think More Traffic is a good choice because more traffic is not the end goal of all ebusinesses, the end goal is more conversions.
The Daily SEO Show with John Stewart? Also limits SEOmoz to sounding like something other than an actual SEO/SEM company.
There's No Place Like Search - I can't believe that one is in the top 5 :\
If you Optimize, They Will Come - well, we hope so, but that's not the end of it.
I like Nurturing Search Marketers, I voted for it, but drop the Worldwide - three words make it stand out more and be more succinct. The Worldwide is a given. But again SEOmoz is not only targeted to search marketers but to potential clients too .
"Your 'Net Potential" is a better choice.
Some of the ones you didn't like were my favorites, personally, but it's all about taste.
Just remember that SEOmoz's tagline is for you - our readers and participants, much more than it is for clients of our services.
I do like your suggestion to potentially drop "worldwide" - it does sound a bit stronger that way.
