Michael reminds me of the little kid I used to protect in grade school in Lowell MA who later grew up to own a chain store media outlet. Fear the geeks from your past.
They own you today!
I think Michael Gray had a cameo in the season finale of the Soprano's??
Love your shoes Rand, great color !
I like the "dumbing down the user" insight. When he said it on the panel the room was so quiet you could hear a pin drop. You are right, Matt was rather squirmy in his seat.
His point about the usability of the turn-off feature is very valid. I think SEM's who are typically more advanced users forget that "general web users" aren't quite as savy and wouldn't normally know that PS is on and they are viewing PSERP's.
I got to ask a question about Dup content, that was a terrific and informative QandA. Lots of insights there. Having an easy Robots.txt solution or report for Dup content on Webmaster Central would be great. His RSS suggestion is a good one, I think a lot of WMC users would like that feature if it were available. I believe Live.com does update via RSS for some tools, so can't see why Google wouldn't consider it.
His "big secret" about trend spotting and "being on the edge" is a great tip I use whenever possible.
Yeah, the Windows login and plates clattering were a bit distracting. Only for a second though and that room was not really monitored. Just anyone could go in, site down and listen.
The 'dumbing down' concept has been my biggest complaint about personalized search since the beginning. I think I left a comment about it here when the topic first came up and if everyone will forgive some self promotion blogged about it a few months ago.
My thoughts then and now were
I'm glad Michael has been taking a stand and pointing out the places where search personaliztion isn't good and where it can be improved.
Great interview. I wish that I could have attended this conference, sounds like I really missed out.
Great interview... Michael Gray is always so insightful.
Graywolf rocks... his blog has moved up my list to a must read.
Google is going to go over all his sites now with a fine-tooth comb. Don't upset the might G.
No offense to the Princess & Sweet Caroline, but the Wolf's theme kicks ass ;)
[I also loved the dude booting up Windows in the background...]
Keep extracting that single nugget of wisdom at the end of each interview Rand!
I like the Duran Duran intro {thumbs up}
