Last year, SEOmoz hosted a sold-out training series in September for 150 guests. That seminar covered the SEO basics - keyword research, building search-friendly sites, algorithms & social media marketing 101. We got fantastic feedback and really enjoyed getting to meet and spend time with our PRO members.
Rand Speaks on Title Tags at the 2007 SEOmoz PRO Training Event
Scott (SEOmoz's lord of all things video) also worked with professional camera crews to film the 7 hours of training content and package into our video training series. It's been a hot item - over 200 copies have already been downloaded.
This year, we're doing something very similar - hosting a PRO Training event at Seattle's University of Washington (the Fishery Sciences Building) geared towards more elite search marketers. Whereas the first seminar in our series was focused on beginner/intermediate level content, this one is geared towards experts. As we crafted the schedule and presentations, we assumed an exceptionally high level of knowledge, and that makes it not only fun for us (though certainly challenging), but we believe, extremely valuable to members who've already nailed down the basics.
Yesterday around 12:00pm (noon) Pacific Time, we launched an announcement of the seminar to our PRO members via email. Out of 150 seats, we currently have 70 spots left (3 fewer than when I started typing this blog post - wow). I'd predict we'll be sold out before the week is over, so if you'd like to join us, I'd recommend making arrangements ASAP.
Inevitably, the topic of timing is going to come up. Our PRO Training Seminar is scheduled on two of the days of SES San Jose. There are several reasons for this. First, we're running the two days before Gnomedex and have been working with Chris Pirillo and his crew to offer discounted Gnomedex attendance to PRO Training attendees. Second, I'm getting married in September, so pushing the seminar to the same time as last year wasn't possible. Third, and certainly not least, it was our intention to offer an alternative to San Jose. While that show is always very good, it's extremely expensive to attend, and much of the material is more focused to a beginner/intermediate audience.
The Training Seminar is not like a major search conference (I'll use a table to illustrate):
Major Search Conferences |
SEOmoz PRO Training Series |
~$1800 to attend | $499 for PRO Members |
4 Days | 1.5 Days |
Multiple Tracks, 100+ Speakers | Single Track, 10 Speakers |
Varying Foci (discussion on whether tactics are OK, which are best, etc) | Singular Focus on usable tactics with examples of how to implement |
Expo Hall with dozens of booths | No expo hall |
Extensive press & blog coverage | No press (and bloggers are asked not to share content) |
Large networking opportunities with thousands of industry folks | Intimate networking environment with 150 attendees |
Opportunity to meet and chat with search engineers | No search engine reps |
I certainly wouldn't be arrogant enough to suggest that our training is categorically better - it's a completely different experience. For many folks, San Jose will be the right choice, but for others, the PRO Training offers a unique option. You can check out the schedule & list of sessions here. It's definitely more expert-level than what you'll find at the major search conferences, but for those who are wondering - NO, it's not blackhat. The folks here at SEOmoz are very talented in white hat marketing & tactics, and this seminar is geared towards in-house SEOs and agency/consulting folks who want to learn strategies they can legitimately employ.
Currently, the Training Series is limited to PRO members only. If you're not PRO, you can sign up for 6 months of membership and the seminar for $748 (still less than 1/2 the price of SES). I'd also suggest that if you're planning to come but are more of a beginner to the field of SEO, check out the video from the first seminar as well as the guides (free and PRO) in the articles section. If there are any questions about the seminar, please feel free to leave them in the comments below and I'll try to answer this evening.
P.S. For those who are planning to attend, we'll send an email in the next week to everyone who registers with details on hotels, directions, etc. For now, I'd certainly suggest checking out flights to Seattle via Farecast or Kayak to help get the best pricing. Do make sure you stay the extra night at the end (Wednesday night), as we're throwing a big SEOmoz party (probably outdoors with BBQ of some kind) in the late afternoon.
I really wish I could come back up to Seattle for this. But alas there is no way. Come on Rand, how about an Austin/Dallas/Houston version? I'll help!! :) HeeHee
Or a Ft Lauderdale/Miami version. Sunshine and Mojitos - you don't get that in Seattle!!
Rand - thanks for explaining the timing of the seminar. The decision to have it at the same time as SES seems quite reasonable.
I was just about to purchase my tix to SES when this opportunity popped up. Having never attended SES, I was quite torn at first. In the end, it came down to what offered the best learning opportunity. I fully expect that to be SEOmoz.
Given the way our Seattle weather has been, however, it was hard to turn down San Jose! Here's to 80 degrees and sun in August!
I'd highly recommend this training to anyone looking to pick up a few gems.
I'd love to attend but I think I'll be in Argentina on vacation - unless Rishil tells us he's going to introduce us all to the girl from his old avatar...that would be worth the 20 hour flight from South America :)
I went to the training last year, and it was awesome. Not only did I have a blast but it was very educational. I wouldn't miss this! I already have my seat. See you in Seattle!
Reason number 4: The NFL kicks of on September 9th and I'm not having any of you guys hound me while I'm trying to watch the game.
I really wish I could come to this - I had a great time last year! Being the only person in a roomful of SEOs who knew that "Lazy Sunday" was the video that sent YouTube skyrocketing is still one of the proudest moments of my life :)
Come to Chicago next time!
Can't wait for another trip to Seattle :)
Duncan and I will both be there and talking about international issues (and maybe other stuff TBC).
See you there Will! Get this, immediately after the seminar I'm going to be flying over to Ireland for Electric Picnic. Why so early for an event that starts on the 29th of August? Bamboo sculpture building time.
I am going to this event, I hope I get new stuff fromit
TO all, myself and my colleague Tyler will be attending. any suggestions on where to saty?
Suggestions por favor!
I loved the first SEOmoz get together. The networking and after party were worth the price of admission let alone the presentation and Q & A session.
I'm totally ready for a more advanced SEOmoz seminar. I registered right after receiving the early bird email notification and a third of the spots were already sold. I emailed my buddy, ecopt, to let him know I was going and he said that him and an associate were already registered.
You're cool Rand, but it will be nice to see a couple others joining the presentation this time around.
I agree - I think diversity of speakers is one of the big areas we're going to improve on this year. Having lots of SEOmoz folks, the guys from Distilled, Stephan & Danny is a real treat :)
I was sad to have missed SMX Advanced so I'm definitely not missing this one, especially after last years event. It's like one of those great movies that don't have a sequal for a long time after the original. I have been eager for this since the beginner training event. Glad this one is going to cover more advanced topics too, along with the additional speakers, personally can't wait to hear Stephan Spencer. See you all there, Thanks for the heads up Slingshotseo!
I wonder if I should have bought more than one ticket to resell at a higher price :) cant wait for this..
This will be the first conference I have attended where I am not a speaker in more than 5 years. I'm banking on it being really good! Got my plane ticket and registration, now I need to know what hotel everyone is staying at so I can book my room. This will also me my first trip to Seattle, so I'm really looking forward to it.
Tony - we're honored to have you join us. If there's material we can teach an expert like you, I'll feel really good about our ability to deliver.
Of course - it will be great to see you again (and August is the perfect time to visit Seattle for your first time).
Will a video presentation of this conference be available in the future? I find it hard to take detailed notes for 8 hours straight, in person.
I must attend! Hopefully I can convince the higher-ups to send me out, and if so I'll see ya there.
I did find the presentation of information very helpful in this post, made it easy to understand what to expect as compared to some of the other conferences you're not quite sure what kind of material / thigns you might learn.
Thanks for making it easy.
We're definitely looking into video for this one as well, but don't have that settled quite yet. :)
Video would be great. Very tough to convince the higher-ups that they should send me back to Seattle. Food for thought = Try an east coast seminar :) Seriously. :)
This is a really informative conference that everybody should be a part of. I went a couple years ago and the information I got while there was irreplaceable. Thank you for all your terrific help and I cannot wait to read more from your blog.
How did you go a couple years ago? This is a new seminar.
I'm pretty sure he meant the Bgeinning SEO Seminar we held in October of last year...oh how the time flies :)
Hey Rand... first of... Congrats on your weeding! Like we say in Italy, "tante cose belle". I wish I could make it to Seattle. However, I'm must stay in Rome and thus I kindly ask you to tape it. I'm a big fan of the first series, however I do have a recommendation. Please hand in mics to the audience when they ask questions. It's was disturbing trying to figure out the questions by your answers. Your audio quality is great but the audience... well, one can barely here it.Second, we are dying to have a such a cozy seminar in Rome. Could we please organize something together. I promise I will help. I strongly believe less is better, and SMX and other SEM Seminars are way to big to deal with the nitty gritty. Besides I’ve perceived it more like a forum than a rather a SEO seminar.Anyway... I look forward to the next video series. I hope scott edits it quickly so I can have it in Rome in no time. I'm dying to learn more from you guys and I hopefully I will find the time to contribute on SEM from the old continent.
Registered and ready to go!
I am really looking forward to this.
I'm going to miss this one as I couldn't get away -- DAMB.... but will Rand and the SEOmoz team host another one soon? I hope so....Who knows... but I'm not missing it again, so keep us all posted guys!!!
No video series of the seminar?
Note to self, read more thoroughly before commenting.
Rand, CONGRATULATIONS on the upcoming wedding! Woo Hoo!
Thanks for sharing the airline resources. Great fares! Look forward to email regarding hotel recommendations.
This will be my first time to Seattle. Finally getting out of my home state, sunny/rainy florida. See you all their.
I registered a couple of days ago and I am looking forward to a great educational/networking time. I can use a break from the 115 degree weather in AZ.
This will be my 3rd time in Seattle and I just love the town. Probably one of the coolest places to visit - and you can not beat the summer weather in Seattle.
Great alternative to SES, and my girlfriend and I are making a vacation out of this. We will be tourning around washington for a week or so. Looking forward to meeting everyone....
I really wanted to go to this but with a new born, I can't get out of the city for a while.
It's too bad you don't have something closer to the East Coast. I'm in Toronto and the flight out is just too long right now. I'm really pissed about not being able to go but family comes first. This is by far the most tempting training session I've ever seen advertised. I've avoided the beginner/intermediate level stuff in the past but this one got my attention right away. Good luck to everyone going.
Does any one think they can smuggle me in from Canada, US Customs Guards player hate on me hahahah. Maybe I can row a little rubber dingy in during the middle of the night.
I'm in! Got my registration...now on to find a flight from the east coast!
The fisheries building...strange choice. ;)
Yeah, when Gillian got that spot, she figured it would be a perfect fit for someone with my moniker :)
Anyone feel like sponsoring a little ol' kid from Sydney to come to this? :)
Figures . . . the only 30 days in 6 months that I don't get 100 mozpoints is the same time period that SEOmoz has a super special training session only for PRO Members. What are the odds of that? Guess that teaches me a lesson to constantly stay active on SEOmoz, huh?
Any clients out there want to cover the cost of the conference, flight (from CHI) and hotel in exchange for 10 hours of my SEO consulting and decent notes of the training session?
DM me if you are interested! ;-)
Note: You can't be a competitor of my employer and it's subject to my employer's approval.

Was the 36th person to sign up. Only 55 seats left now! Love the "countdown" on the reg form.
Any hotel recommendations so that hotel doesn't cost more than the conference? And, I think conference is priced right, IMO.
A lot of people, myself included, stayed at the Watertown Hotel last year. It's walking distance from the seminar and it's very nice (and affordable). I'll be making reservations there again for this one.
Rand, do you think of making the same kind of training once in Europe ? during the next smx in London ? I am sure, that we, as European, would be delighted to listen to you too!
GUTTED I AM NOT GOING TO MAKE THIS
Sorry guys, I can't get to this one! I'm driving back to our house in Montreal Canada from our place in Jackson Hole, Wy that same day it starts!. Damb.. (Sorry) I really wanted to attend this one... just a bad date for me on the frontlines. I don't think the wife would approve of me bailing on her so I can attend a conference I really should be at !! LOL. Perhaps sleeping on the couch for a week is worth it ???
You can bet I'll be at the next one for sure... I'll keep my eyes open !
I know you said email would be going out next week. In case you wanted feedback about the Waterfront Hotel, I thought it was great last year. Do they still have that wine bar next door?
I am going to miss this oppurtunity not attending, people those who are attending are lucky. I am going to miss the late afternoon BBQ party as well :(
