I usually have a pretty good hunch of future PR updates, and it was accurate this time also. For some odd reason they seem to have some sort of *mystic connection* with my calendar (or then I'm just always too busy to follow updates closely).... So it's official, the little green bar is updated and the project website has moved from PR0 to PR5.
So how was it done? Here's the short brief (as I'm supposed to help on the move, not to surf on the web ;)
- These project follow up posts contain a single link (that 4 links this one included);
What most people miss in link hunting, is the possibility to utilize existing real life networks. If you are an expert or associated with something, then there is a good possibility you already have the required personal connections, that provide access to write articles etc on 3rd party (successful) websites. Utilize them. - Our main site has 2 links;
I think this is pretty obvious. If this was a client site, then this would not be an option due to NDA's. - Some PR5-6 blogs have linked to site with their posts (100% organic);
These are from very diversified topics, and IMO they just show off what a good content can do. People liked about the topic of page, and they also linked to it. - Lots of constantly changing feed / tag based links;
I think this is the main benefits of syndication from SEO perspective. Surprisingly there are several high quality EDU-sites providing feed/tag based links to their readers. And if you happen to operate on niche keywords, there is a possibility that these links last for months. - Few directory etc. submissions;
This is something I'd call the usual link scavenging. Especially with new sites the policy of focusing on quality instead of quantity works IMO better.
I tried to spam again! I just don't learn!
I have been using a popular ad network commonly referred to as ctr cpm and cpc so you can guess who it is. The cpc in the past has been shocking for what should be a high paying keyword. Now since I have gone through the pr changes and received a higher pr I have noticed that continually my cpc has increased quite drammatically. I believe pr has the greatest effect on cpc and not the actual traffic one might believe it would generate. Besides a PR7 could sell advertising space now then compared to PR2.

To michael,
How does manipulating PageRank help search engine optimization? I realize that some people continue to monetize it, but this is not an indication of quality, visibility, or performance in search results.
IMO PageRank is YASI (yeat another SEO indicator). It is by no means accurate, but the same applies to other commands and tools SEO's use daily. All are just (very rough) indicators that allow to predict / foresee how SEO process is moving forth.
Does PageRank still carry any value... I'd say definetely yes, but not the way most think of (that's one of the reasons why I almost always talk about the importance of defining concepts as precisely as possible).
Is it an indicator of quality, visibility, or performance? In most cases yes to certain extend. I.e. if a site has lots of incoming links (which equals good global visibility), also it's pagerank is high. There is/will be of course exceptions
Is it an indication of quality, visibility, or performance in search results (your original phrase). In most cases a very little...
How do I define/see PageRank? IMO Ridings-Sishigan-Whalen etc. put it best with their PageRank Uncovered (prev. PageRank Explained). I know this is an very old document, but it sums up things nicely:
Note: Two advices / requests before you read the quotes below 1) Please, try to clear your mind from all earlier definitions of PageRank. 2) Read it with tought. Phrase by phrase, and give them time.
What is PageRank? PageRank is Google's method of measuring a page's "importance." When all other factors such as Title tag and keywords are taken into account, Google uses PageRank to adjust results so that sites that are deemed more "important" will move up in the results page of a user's search accordingly. How is PageRank determined? The Google theory goes that if Page A links to Page B, then Page A is saying that Page B is an important page. PageRank also factors in the importance of the links pointing to a page. If a page has important links pointing to it, then its links to other pages also become important. The actual text of the link is irrelevant when discussing PageRank.
Feel free to comment, as I think a good discussion about definition, value and meaning of pagerank is in place.
ps. sorry for delay in answering. Finally got wireless router up and running ;)
Where did you see a PR of 5? With this tool it shows 0 on all DCs.
The PageRank update was on a few datacenters then retreated. I expect it will show-up again soon. Either that or they got a phone call from a vacationing Matt Cutts saying, "Not yet!!!"
well, so far the PR5 is only on 64.233.179.104, 64.233.185.99, 64.233.185.104, 64.233.179.99, 64.233.171.99, 64.233.171.147 and 64.233.171.104 by the looks of things (the rest give it 0), so hopefully its only a matter of time before it spreads to the others :)
Ive been following this project with interest, it's given me quite a few ideas of my own :)
