NOTE: If you're unable to see the private message button on a users profile page, most likely you have cached our stylesheet. To fix this, hold down the "Shift" key and click the refresh button. That should cause you to reload the stylesheet and show the image.
Once you receive a new private message, you'll get an email notifying you of the message and offering a direct link to go view the message. Controls over email notification, along with controls to either accept/deny all private messages entirely, are both available on your Edit Account page in your profile. Currently everyone is set up to receive private messages and receive email notification.
As with all new features that we launch here at SEOmoz, your feedback is welcome. Please let me know about any bugs or problems you encounter while using private messaging. Also, we already have some feature additions on our to do list for the PM system, but feel free to suggest others you think would be helpful.
Also, I wanted to give you a sneak peek at the next SEOmoz product that we have coming down the pipeline. Expect a release in the upcoming few days.
It's gonna be rad. :)
mozdev FTW! Great work Jeff.
Feel free to test your PMs on me, my inbox is feeling sad and lonely.
Nice. About to go and message shor to stop him feeling so lonely. I keep getting offers in my email about that. Maybe I'll forward him one.
Re: new feature - dammit, just *after* our seminar. Couldn't you have released it early just for us?
For everyone who isn't seeing the button on user pages, you're probably just caching the stylesheet. Hold down the "shift" key and ciick refresh. That should do it.
That worked! Thanks!
Yaay, Jeff! Way to earn that CTO status!
You know it.
SWEET.....Will I be able to 'dropkick' or 'throw a flying elbow' at someone if I disagree with their position??
Geat Feature Added.Rand & Rebecca are likely to recieve more msgs.
How about a left side navigation link to view or send msg similar to "Write a blog entry"
Also Chances are this feature can also be used as to spam msgs or advertising. Any facility to block users from sending messages (stop that annoying user from sending msg) or maybe ban the user if he is msg mania and receive complaint.
Excellent point - a "report this as spam" is a very good idea. Thanks!
Awesome tool - I haven't used it yet (about to go spam, er, I mean message shor) but this is a great addition.
This is awesome - I too had trouble finding contact info for someone at SEOmoz once and this would have been very handy.
I remember when eBay rolled out their message system a few years ago - within a week they had added a CAPTCHA and put a limit on number of messages you could send per day (especially for new accounts). I don't think SEOmoz has the kind of fraud-prone user base that eBay does, but I just thought I'd mention those things anyway.
Yeah, I imagine we'll get there some day, and we're in the process of developing those safe gaurds to make your private message experience as enjoyable and spam-free as possible.
Excelent move by SeoMoz! It just shows how much SeoMoz and the Mozzers care about their users.
While many blogs use Spam filtering techonolies like Akismet and Karma to firewall themselves from their users - commentators, and do not provide an alternative means of communication if the comment is flaged as Spam, SeoMoz opening its chanels of communication to its users.
Open and unhindered communication is the best way to thribe and retain your followers!
It also gives an oppurtunity for a user to make a private comment that he or she may not make in public, to a team member of SeoMoz organization.
Finally allowing user to communicate with eachother is what social networking services are about!
SeoMoz and the Mozzers are really ahead of the curve in SEO.
I am proud to be part of SeoMoz social networking service!
O brave new world, That has such features in't!
Nice! I like the sneak peek in the post also... looks like SEOMoz is on its way to becoming a Facebook for the SEO community? Messages, event listings... whats next? A Super Poke application?
Seriously though, good new feature!
Wow, it was just the other day that I couldn't get in touch with one of the members and was pretty bummed about it. Thumbs up!
And I really hope that's a screenshot of a meetup.com of SEO by SEOMoz!
Really cool addition guys! Now I just have to think about who to message... and what to message them! ;)
Feel free to PM me anyone lol :P
Sweet!!
wow things are really happening. This is great.
Excellent feature i'm glad this was added.
I just got spammed through the message system (by someone who signed up today!). What should I do?
Hey Lorisa,
I got the message deleted and all taken care of. Let me know of it happens again. We're currently working on "Report as SPAM" functionality for the PM system.
Thanks for taking care of it so quickly. I know you guys have worked very hard on this feature. We all appreciate it very much.
That's smart. Hopefully people will resepect it and not spam the hell out of it.
Thanks this was added.
Here's a tip for avoiding those embarassing "NOTE: shift click on reload to get an uncached stylesheet" messages.
If you include a version number in the request string for your style sheet when you include it (in a link or @url), e.g. https://www.example.com/mystyle.css?rev=5 browsers won't use the cached copy. But when a client visits the site and already has that revision cached they will use it.
The new feature is going to be a utility to turn my screen into something from Brazil?
nice work.
Great new edition! I'm sure this will be very useful for all members! :)
Hopefully there will be some measures in place to prevent spamming!
I think it's an awesome feature, congrats! But yeah, in line with mrtheplague above... are there a certain amount of thumbs needed to access this feature, or will it be open to all members regardless of mozpoints?
I mean, I know you've said "Currently everyone is set up to receive private messages and receive email notification", but does that also mean everyone can send?
That is a SWEET feature! I feel like I'm saying this every other day when you release spiffy new toys for us to play with, but, NICE WORK MOZZERS!!
Is the new product premium? :-(
Nope. It's available to all SEOmoz users.
the other day I was sitting here thinking "I really wanna PM someone on SEOMoz for the hell of it". Now I can... so thank you.
Oh good, that secret webcam we set up in your office is working properly.
Wow... really nice feature.
Do you plan on implementing the same system in the MarketPlace?
Rand Fishkin, you are trully an innovator.
When I hinted to you that SEO with regards to SERPs as we have known it is taking on a metamorphises, I did not expect for you to come out with SeoMoz messanger services, instanteniosly.
Resently as a commentator on www.dailyblogtips.com post, Forums: Are They Right For Your Blog, Daniel the blog owner, offered me to be a guest writter on the follow up post, of how to make a popular forum.
I have developed a customized forum Travel in Asia forum and have been been administrating it for 3 years now. While my forum is not as popular as Lonely Planet Travel Forum it does attract interesting people from travel, business, and social networking community.
In discussing the topic of Forums: Are They Right For Your Blog, I made an anology of a forum being a Ferari and a blog being a Mercedes Benz, but I also stated that a blog with refined skills can be a Maserati, out performin Ferari, because of its slik and compact design.
By offering SeoMoz messaging you are creating that Maserati, the super slick 21 century, warp drive vechile that will bring SEO to the new frontiers of Social Media Consultancy.
I am trully proud to be around you, and to be influenced by your expertise.
Flipp'n sweet!!! I know that most SEOs would avoid Instant Messaging systems for fear of loosing UGC. I don't think SEOmoz has much to worry about. Rand blogs like the Terminator of SEO and Matt Cutts knows what's up with SEOmoz personally.
Keep it up!
Great Feature!
I am not seeing it on fF, though. I have the latest FF and I am using Vista.
Hey Guys,
Which button exactly are you guys not seeing?
I wasn't able to see the actual Send Message button on the members profile page...but once I disabled the SEO for FF extension and refreshed it was there...for me at least.
The Profile page image that you refered to as "sexy "Private Message This User" button" isn't showing up, which severly impairs my capacity to do "automagic".
btw I do not have the seo plugin, just a normal ff install.
Jeff, think very carefully about what you just asked. :)
Seriously, it looks like a great feature, especially for those of us who have a habit of burying our contact info. on our own sites. Will it be available just from profiles or also from YOUmoz posts, etc.?
Is anyone else not seeing the button in FF? If I switch to IE it's there...
Odd....I had to disable my SEO for FF extension and refresh...then it came up. Seems to be working just fine now. :)
I'm seeing it in FF
I am not seeing it in Firefox either.
I didn't see it initially, but a refresh did the trick.
yup. looks like seo for firefox is causing an interference for me too.
Let's all try to Spam rand, at the same time, and see if the tool crash..:)
Let's not.
