Apparently, according to this page, displaying this "badge" will get me into legal trouble:
trouble from these guys:
I know, they don't look all that menacing, but looks are deceiving on the "Interwebs". To be able to "legally" display the badge, I need to first be selected as one of the 43 "best" blogs. I started trolling down the list (while on the phone and typing an email and pasting code into Dreamweaver - that's my style) and came across some fairly good content. In particular:
-
Steve Borsch - Seems like a very smart chap and a straight talker. I liked his post on the 9.7 billion pages of nothingness at Google.
-
Dion Almaer's Ajaxian - I met him in person a few weeks ago and he seemed cool. I like the link love they occassionally send our way, too.
-
PJ Hyett - Whose skewering of the word Zeitgeist is so pointed, I'm thinking about removing it from an upcoming content piece SEOmoz has been working on for the past few months.
-
Kelli Bernard's Lovescool - A blog about dessert, with an entry on champagne brownies. Honestly, what's not to love?
Maybe this is a good list... We should look into getting on there.
BTW - Since it's just you and me reading the blog this weekend, Kim, what do you say we fill up the comments with favorite recipes?
Hi Randfish! Thanks for the welcome!
Ah right that's it. Its unlikely that the top 43 blogs need the juice anyway!
Great post. I agree if you are a top 43 blog you don't need links that bad.
Someone needs to create a "43 worst blogs" list
#1 - 0at.org :D
haha..actually have you seen 0at.org today? I was up until 3am last night finishing up the new design and putting up a gallery. It's pretty sex-ay looking.
Yeah - G & I saw it and were "oohing" and "ahhing" - it looks damn good.
hi there - i'm new here but thought i'd jump right in anyway....
have you noticed the nice use of the nofollow attribute on the links on the 43 best blogs site - someone is really planning for no pagerank leaks (when there is some...)
Thomas, I think that's because the page is a Wiki - you can edit the list directly and anonymously, so it wouldn't pay to have those links pass juice.
Great to see you joining in!
Yep...working all weekend, but that includes blog surfing. Hey, those brownies look and sound fantastic! My daughter was reading one of her teen magazines during my son's hockey game last night (They won! #2 in the standings in their league. Playoffs next week. Cross fingers) and she showed me a picture of soy chocolate pudding. The article was about soy products...which I know are good for you but heck, if there's soy chocolate pudding??? Life just got better, heh
I feel a duty to inform you that soy chocolate pudding leaves you disappointed and wanting the real thing. It is like trying to pass off powdered milk for cream, or baking soda for toothpaste.
I've had a lot of soy products that actually taste pretty damn good. I can't vouch for soy pudding, however. Also, I had a dairy digestion problem that forced me to avoid eating real dairy for years, so what tastes good to me sometimes doesn't taste good to everyone else. :)
No! Dang it. I was so hopeful... :)
it was a lot more than 20 minutes for me - more like most of the day
Really? OK checking the server stats... I see that around 9:15am we were down for 20 minutes or so and again between 12:00-12:30pm and again (doh!) between 1:30-2:00pm. Maddening!!
How much downtime should we tolerate from a host? What's your experience?
Egol, I've used many, many, many hosts over the years. 99% of them were absolutely horrible. But even the best ones have their problems on occasion. The host I use the most even went down for a week once, and although it killed me, I stayed with them, because they care. With some hosts, one days' downtime would be enough for me, because they don't communicate with me and don't care about me.
I've learned to always keep at least 3 hosts that I like going at the same time. (In other words, not all my sites are hosted with one host). That way, if one goes bad, I already have experience with the others and feel comfortable moving. And when I'm upset about downtime, the last thing I want to do is start a search for a new host that I have no experience with.
Generally, though, I assume that anywhere from 1 hour to 24 hours downtime is going to happen once in a while, no matter how good the host is. Sh*t happens even to the best of 'em. So patience is required at times.
Sorry to highjack this entry - Even though I've been sometimes disappointed with the tech support of our host company, we've never had unscheduled downtime of more than a couple hours in the last 3 years (or at least I didn't know about it). So maybe I should be counting my lucky stars.
But I think the idea of host diversification to limit problems is a good idea.
Again, my apologies for the hijack.
We currently host with swiftco and despite the little bit of downtime today I have had nothing but great service from them. I can't vouch for their shared hosting plans, but the dedicated servers are very solid.
Hey, your site was down today. Couldn't get here to read. Glad I can now. I missed it. :)
Yeah - our host company, Swiftco, hicupped twice today for 10-20 minutes of downtime. Very frustrating...
