- Over at Techipedia, Samir Balwani guest blogged about Plutter Kite, the "official roadmap for the best micro-blogging platform." He goes through Plurk, Twitter, and Brite Kite's services and features, and it's a handy drilldown of each site's offerings.
- Speaking of Plurk and Samir, over at Leftthebox.com he brings us 5 reasons why we should be using Plurk. I actually am using Plurk, and I kind of like it. (I'm still the last marketer alive who's not on Twitter.)
- Our CTO Jeff showed me this list of top 10 home cooking mistakes. You trying to hint at something, Jeff? I told you, it's not my fault the chicken was undercooked--it's your girlfriend's fault for having a weak stomach! ;)
- The Yahoo! Search Marketing Blog offers up 5 steps to ensure you're bidding for the right place when working on your paid listings campaigns. #1 used to be "If you're on Google, you're in the wrong place," but I think that's changed after the partnership. :)
- Um, Japan's latest booming sex niche is old people porn. I'm not kidding. (The link goes to a Time.com article, so don't worry about seeing any wrinkly boobies or anything.)
Four star links:
- The Web Hosting Database compiled a list of 100 webmaster blogs by and for women. I was fortunate to make the list along with many other excellent women in our industry. It's a great resource and a fantastic way to discover new blogs.
- Frequent SEOmoz member Richard Baxter wrote a useful recruitment SEO guide. In his words, his "Guide to Recruitment SEO is aimed at the beginner to intermediate SEO consultant or in house marketers tasked with buying a new recruitment website from a web design agency."
- ViperChill came out with the Definitive Guide to Fark and Getting Mass Traffic. I love seeing posts that highlight how to leverage less popular social media/web 2.0 sites. Fark is a great site, and it's cool to see ways in which you can try and get a link or a mention from them.
- Chris Winfield built a presentation exclusively via Twitter. What better way to show how Twitter works and highlight its benefits than by using it to craft your entire presentation? Clever work, Chris.
- David Mihm's Local Search Ranking Factors is an invaluable resource for anyone doing local and small business SEO. Much like our Search Engine Ranking Factors, David's guide pings 20 local search experts on various local search ranking factors and has them weigh in on whether they feel these factors have much of an impact in rankings. I highly recommend checking it out--a lot of time and effort went into this guide, and it's a great reference for anyone looking to optimize for local search.

Rebecca, thanks for the link, and a five-star one no less. If people find the Local Factors are 1/10th as valuable as the original Ranking Factors, I'll be thrilled.
I also highly recommend checking out Chris's Twitter post -- should have been given an extra star, IMHO, but perhaps you categorically downgrade anything that has to do with Twitter, no matter how good the article :D.
That ranking factors doc is absolutely brilliant. Very nice work.
Also, Rebecca thanks so much for the link. Really appreciated.
Oh and could I just add that if anyone wants to pass on some feedback please please do, it's a new blog so all suggestions welcome.
Richard, your article is so good that it's obvious you won't be needing to ever use a recruitment site!
Thank you! (once again!) That's a very nice thing to say
Great work Richard. I caught it on Sphinn and got some good tips from it.
I really enjoyed it. Lots of great info!
Good job!! As a former HR professional (term used loosely) having a recruitment site is a large investment so ensuring optimization is absolutely vital. Making sure its optimized correctly with all of the appropriate content for the user is not always as obvious.
I think this blog is great and I'll be passing it along so some colleagues of mine...they could use the help!
The local ranking guide is really great stuff...I've been looking for good info on that for some time. Sorry David, but I'll be doing it for small businesses in Portland too SUCKA (thanks again).
No problem, JonnyRash :) I actually just moved to Portland a few months ago & most of my clients are based elsewhere. There's enough business out there on the web for all of us :D
Damn straight!
I'm throwing two more links into the mix:
Valleywag takes a look at Time magazines 50 Best Websites to see how they make money - if they do (Mostly Google and Yahoo Ads) to show why Microsoft desperately wants to get in the game.
And this is some good - somewhat funny - link bait. And it is something we can all do! Comedian Steve Harwood photographs famous people hitting him.
Did I just miss the sarcasm Vin, or do you frequently run into celebrities?
If all you care about is getting punched in the stomach - yeah, I could find famous people to do that.
It might be a bit easier for me to aim a little lower though.
Maybe a page titled "Women Slapping Vin" might be more my speed.
Well....when I was posting my comment I didn't see this part about "Woman slapping Vin".
So my comment below is a complete accident, but if you still need someone I might be persuaded to volunteer for that as well ;)
I'd be willing to try it :P
On a related note, check out the Ask Steve section.
A bit of a waste of time, but funny nonetheless.
He's coming to our backyard of Seattle next week (June 24), so if you're interested in attending, you can receive $20 off the $99 registration fee by entering the following code at checkout: R1T1JKR1 Actually, I was hoping you had coupon codes for some old people porn sites. Got any of those, by chance? It's getting so expensive nowadays. =(
I can't believe you "stiffed" the Old Japanese Porn people with only three stars. Anyone that's 74 years old and still doing the nasty - on camera no less, deserves 5 stars in my book!
On a separate note, thought I would share a link to what looks like a good two day SEM for SMB seminar hosted by Johan Janssens, Todd Friesen and company in Austin, TX on July 16th-17th.
Also, for anyone that missed it, the David Mihm Local SEO Ranking Factors post that Rebecca references (David gave due recognition to Rand for the original idea), is outstanding. I've been pimping it all week. He put a top notch team together for it.
Nice roundup Rebecca.
DAMN YOU, MAGUIRE! YOU BEAT ME BY ONE F$ING MINUTE! GRRRR!!!
I'm sorry Darren. I tried to write a long comment replete with links and also after reading and watching old people porn for awhile in order to give you a fighting chance to sneak in there.
If it's any consolation, you'll always be first in my heart. :=)
P.S. - What took you so long. Did you get caught up watching Sucmacacky-san gettin' his funk on?
...after reading and watching old people porn for awhile... Don't bullshit me, Sean... you were on set, starring in said productions.
I'm sorry - did I fail to mention they were home movies?
*shudder*
Please, no more! End this thread!
Geez Darren Did you finish already? You haven't even seen the movie yet.
Horrible, but I still laughed.
Boys... You're stealing Rebecca's spotlight!
LondonSEO is one word.
;)
Actually, it's more of a state of mind...
;)
Rebecca not on Twitter... Actually, I think there was a Twitter thread talking about her absence!
Thanks for all the time you put into this RoundUp! Especially appreciate it when you link to YOUmoz articles, e.g Rookie First Thought - didn't see that great post before.
Does anyone else think the "Top 10 Home Cooking Mistakes" is a good example of over cluttering a page with text?
Needs a few pictures and some white space to increase readability.
Then again I have a short attention span (insert favourite Simpsons quote)
"Okay Homer, just sign here and you're in college"
"Hey look, that dog has a ham in it's mouth"
Yeah, I agree. I have difficulty keeping my concentration when reading text-cluttered posts on a screen. Rand often sends me these great long articles for Roundup Thursday, but they're just miles and miles of text and I get insta-eye glaze.
What, like this?
Actually, I think she was referring to something more like this.
Yikes. That's pretty creepy.
I wonder why that is? You can read a book which is page after page of text with no breaks, but a few hundred words on a screen and it's too much.
I bet if there was a decent psychologist out there they could tell why.
Great roundup Rebecca. You deserve a raise. And a Title.
Ooohh..I hope it's not psychological. I can't do it either. If it's too long I have to print it out. I think it has something to do with it being easier for your eyes to read on paper.
Or maybe I've got "issues"
Wouldn't surprise me either way really.
Haha at "and a title." I usually just refer to myself as "Super Awesome Critically Important SEO."
Days after this post has long been forgotten... you think you can just sneak in here and start complimenting yourself when no one's looking?
...yes.
Thanks for the link to my fark article guys, good list of links to be among this week
Glen
Thanks for the Local Search Ranking Factors link, I missed it somehow... Great job as always!
Very useful roundup thursday, even as I get to it on Friday... I do not currently deal with much local search business but sometime in the fall when I plan on doing some side consulting work for local websites this Local Search Ranking Factors Publication will be a huge help, what a gem! Thank you
I too appreciate the time to gather this info and know you read miles and miles of text and that's why I know you won't mind me letting you know the Plutter Kite post was a done by a guest blogger, Shamir Balwani of Leftthebox.com the very same person who guest posted on Huomah.com in the link you listed below that. I guess guest blogging is working for Shamir.
I also agree with Chris Mihm that Chris Winfield's post deserved 5 stars, for reason I stated here. But then again I'm not going through a million posts and determining what deserves what and writing a blurb about each of them, I'm just saying ;)
Thanks for clearing that up for me, David! Hope all's well in the Far East. :)
