Wow! At least one (probably the only one, hehe) of Rand's predictions is already coming true. There has been, for a while now (more than a year from what I heard), a CMS that allows you to build Digg-like platforms: PLIGG. And let me tell you, there is a bizarre TREND in most of the names - most of them are utterly funny with their "iggish" or "tube" style:
Riggd Digg-like news with a patriotic community (who launched that!!)
Dealigg Digg-like e-commerce site with "deals." It even has a Black Friday section!
GameDiggity Digg-like YouTube videos of gamers / games
ScoopTube Digg-like best viral videos. The design is not top tier, though.^
Jossle Digg-like political news
GameSnips Digg-like gamers information (walkthroughs, etc.)
TheBigMashup Guess it: Digg-like mashups
TalkSoccer Digg-like soccer fans site
Unless I'm wrong, the guys behind this are the guys who launched VideoSift, which is a digg-like platform for YouTube videos.
All those sites still have a low traffic count, but I believe some could do well in niche markets if they are well targeted (not necessarily the ones above, although the most successful ones so far seems to be doing fine).
My only concern about this is the long term reliability of such a solution--updates, dealing with mass traffic, languages, etc.
What are your thoughts?
*UPDATE: Get your Niche market social bookmarking site with IwillSearchU post about Direct Links from small bookmarking vertical sites. Thanks tpiddy (by the way, it would be great if you would have a about you page on your site, we can even guess your name with your nickname!).
**UPDATE #2: Ryan Knowles mentionned me that there is a Pligg site which talks about Internet Marketing / AdSense / SEO, so for people like me and you looking to boost their SERPs, I'd recommend you try PlugIM, which was already reviewed by Wired, Seth Godin and Steve Rubel. Thanks Ryan!
Excellent updates to a good blog article. I've been watching / taking part in the social media and I'm really excited to see so many "me toos" springing up for niche markets. I'll be creating (or installing, skinning, configuring etc) A LOT of blogs and a lot of pligg sites this year, probably in the neighborhood of 100+. It's great to see such powerful technology enabling very rapid website roll outs.
No mention of www.Agentb.com? It's the only one that's search engine optimized to perfection.
I could see digg clones becomming the new "link farm" directories and being abused by webmasters desperate to find easy links and traffic. Imagine 2,000 digg clones, if you post the same story (or a variation with a different title / description) on each one, that's a lot of potential traffic and links at any one time.
Here's a digg-like (Pligg) website on China Technology News: Chinamemes.com: https://www.chinamemes.com/
What about https://www.dealshouter.com ?
It's a nice deals website based on pligg, I believe.
Here's a great new one all about open source software:
EntirelyOpenSource.com
It's actually an integration of 3 open source software packages - Pligg for social news, DokuWiki for an open source software directory, and Joomla for a massive rss feed aggregating service.
Yeah the outlook, designing, and activities of these Digg like site is very cool. But how can I found these like site through search engine(Google, Yahoo, Bing). Can anyone help me with exact query for finding these site in search engine specially in Google? I will be great help for me. Thanks
May I recommend 'MettaBlog.com', whereby MettaBlog.com is a mini site created for you to Make Friends Online Via Social Bookmarking Tool And Submit URL Free!.
The list great, but i also like https://www.v0v.com
This is also similar to digg and quite cool. You should include this also in your list.
I want to second the shout for PlugIM. It's a great site and has already sent some traffic.
Pierre
Here's a list of nearly all Digg-like sites, including those based on Pligg.
https://3spots.blogspot.com/2006/04/all-digg-s...
If you're interested, I wrote an pretty detailed analysis of a couple of all Digg-like sites, comparing Alexa traffic ranking (yes, I know: it sucks) for all of them here: https://franticindustries.com/blog/2006/12/12/...
If you want the short version though, the future of these sites seems pretty bleak: most of them aren't gaining a huge following.
Yeah, sorry to be a downer but this is not a "new" CMS.
Yeah you're right... It was NEW to me ;)
I have a digg clone for a year now, and it is time to change it to something completely diferent. Pligg exists for more than a year, when I started my site, I had to choose between MEneame and the english translated version, Pligg. I went for Meneame. I agree with jason, Drupal would make things better.
This is also what Battelle's Search Mob is done in: https://battellemedia.com/searchmob/
i have been watching the development of pligg for a while now.
i have a draft of a blog post about these sites, you just had to be quicker than me Guillaume. i will post it tonight and comment again.
pligg is a cool project but its php.... i wonder if we will see some better python or rubyonrails clones... reddit (my fav) is python made with web.py i think....
While not directly out of the box, Drupal(PHP based CMS) has a very good framework for creating Digg like sites using the Vote Up/Down module We have a step by step tutorial for installing Drupal and all the other modules to get it up and running in under an hour with no programming, part 1 is here Tim (long time feed reader)
in the spirit of the holidays, i have posted my list of smaller social bookmarking sites that give out direct links.
Nice collection. How did you find all of those? I have been thinking about starting one of these sites for a specific niche but seeing that it could attract spammy links like bugs to a Georgia porchlight... I might stick with being the editor.
I think that public submissions are great for a lot of sites but if you hold a tight and picky control over content it might not yield the desired result.
Good find skore, I like the "patriotic" pligg theme idea thinger. ;)
I love pligg. I have a couple sites in development using this cms. Thanks for such a great post!
I will be keeping a blog update regarding all pligg development at Webmaster my domain
Funny you should mention that. I actually used Pligg a month or so back to build a "social brainstorming" site (at www.60ideas.com). Pligg is actually a port of Spanish open source software called Meneame (www.meneame.net). It shows, it's really rough around the edges. We had to do quite a bit of hacking to get it to work right and there are still a few parts of the site that don't work quite right.
So my general impression is that Pligg isn't going to go very far, the code base is pretty bad. However, it works in the short term as a quick-fix to get a Digg clone up and running (if you can hack the PHP). A better long term solution is probably something like a modified installation of Drupal (www.drupal.org).
