Welcome to the second edition of Next Level! In the first Next Level blog post, the Success Team and Help Team here at Moz created 10 video walkthroughs to help you "power up" your knowledge of the Moz tools. We're continuing the educational series with a new video and a workflow showing you how to take on your competitors using Moz. Read on and level up!
For SEOs, the battle to rank highest in the search results often comes down to survival of the fittest. But if you know how to size up your competition, you can gain the upper hand and become king of the jungle! Come on a SERP-fari in this Next Level video and try these three ways to use the Moz tools to out-hunt all the other lions.
Workflow summary
To review, here's an outline of the three steps to scoping out the competition!
(You’ll need a Moz Pro subscription to use Keyword Difficulty and Fresh Web Explorer. If you aren't yet a Moz Pro subscriber, you can always try out the tools with a 30-day free trial.)
- After you've entered three competitors in your Moz Analytics campaign settings, head over to the Keyword Difficulty tool to get a detailed look at the search results for keywords you're targeting. Don't forget to run a full SERP analysis report for even more data!
- Next, investigate your competitors' recent links and brand mentions using Fresh Web Explorer to get some content and link building ideas.
- Finally, head over to Followerwonk to find potential Twitter followers to poach from your competitors.
Looking for other resources to help you plan your attack? Here are some that might help. Go get 'em, tiger! (But watch out for zebras…)
- Open Site Explorer's New Link Building Opportunities Section (and a Slight Redesign) - Learn more about OSE's new link opportunities section, particularly the "link intersect" tool, which can help you find pages that are linking to your competitors but not you.
- Moz Academy: Competitive Analysis with the Keyword Difficulty Tool - Get a detailed walk-through of how to use the Keyword Difficulty and SERP Analysis tool to beat your competition.

If you have other ways of using the Moz tools to rule the jungle, we'd love to hear them! Sound off in the comments below.
Thanks Ellie !
Great informative video and I would like to share that for an SEO professional its necessity to have the knowledge/practice to run the Tools in future.
Hey, good to see these posts. There is a sea of tools out there and it's good to have resources to firstly remind us what they are for and give us ideas but for me personally to get my staff to play with and read so they can see how creative you can be with these tools and the data they spit out.
I do think it is all too easy to forget about the crawl report in the new design. Often just crawling a site and working through the litany of small, easily fixed issues is gold in itself. Would be good to see a post on using the crawler to do a quick and effective SEO audit - I may have even just talked myself into that one. :)
Cheers
Marcus
I like that idea! Thanks for your comment. :) And have you seen our Moz Academy video on Crawl Diagnostics yet? You might find it helpful! Here it is: https://moz.com/academy/understanding-crawl-diagnostics
I had not seen this. Fantastic! I love that Moz is always looking for ways to provide us with tools that improve our ability to make informed decisions. Way to go guys, this is a big reason that I spend so much time here! : )
Awesome! Happy to help. Definitely check out the other Moz Academy videos - they have tons of great tips on how to get the most out of the Moz tools.
Next Level!! Gooo!! ;)
Thanks for the post. I actually really liked the Followerwonk portion of the video. It makes it easy to gain new targeted followers.
Great video! I love the videos, because I always end up paying attention and learn way more :).
Wow, wonderfull video. To use videos is better to remember concepts like those. Thanks.
Hi Ellie, thanks for this great video! Very easy to follow.
Quick question on Followerwonk. Can we login without a twitter account? I have a mozpro membership which doesn't have an associated Twitter handle, and I simply want to compare Twitter handles as you're doing in your video, but it keeps asking me to sign in with Twitter when I've already clicked on "Link to Moz account"...
Thanks for your help,
Hi there! You can actually use some of Followerwonk's features while logged out of Moz Pro and Twitter. That includes the "Compare users" step I demonstrated in the video! Hope that helps - glad you liked the video. :)
Great tutorial! I will have to check out Followerwonk - nice tool!
Gran vídeo ... gracias por compartir con nosotros este post .... Tendré que mirar Followerwonk ... :)
This article is well explained, thank you very much for the information, it is one of the most relevant that I could find
Get ready to the next level ! Thanks !!
can we use these tools without being pro members?
Hey there! You’ll need a Moz Pro subscription to use Keyword Difficulty and Fresh Web Explorer. If you aren't yet a Moz Pro subscriber, you can always try out the tools with a 30-day free trial. :)
I don`t know these tools. Congratulations for the video. It is awesome! I think that Open Site Explorer is the best of the three. I have looking that tool and it is wonderfull. Thanks you for the information.
Nice video to create awareness for these tools, that some people may not have been aware existed.
However, what I'd really like to see next is an in-depth video on each of these tools. E.g. the keyword difficulty tool. I've entered a domain and I can see some numbers pop-up, what next? What conclusions should one be making around the difficulty scores? When might someone decide that a keyword is too difficult to go after? How might someone use these metrics to to estimate the effort required to compete?
Do videos like this exist on Moz currently?
Howdy! Thanks for your comment. We have some terrific in-depth videos over at Moz Academy. Here's one that sounds like it might be just what you're looking for: Competitive Analysis with the Keyword Difficulty Tool. :) I also recommend our Help Hub, which has walkthroughs for each tool.
Ah cool thanks - didn't know about the Moz academy videos. Will check them out.
This was a great informative video. I've been using the tools but not like the 3 steps to scope competitors. I'm passing this around to my coworkers so they can better understand the MOZ tools, and use it to its full potential.
That's awesome!! Thanks so much. It was a fun video to make.
Very interesting and dynamic because some posts are very boring and hard to read.
Congrats!
Great video and new tools are too good.
Awesome video Ellie!!
I will be playing around with these newly found tricks first thing tomorrow morning. : ) I'm really liking the new tool designs and layouts. Crazy how we've been using these tools and can still discover new ways to utilize them. Great stuff!!
Sounds good, Bryan! Thanks for your comment; I'm super glad you found these tips helpful!
Thanks for the post , I'm very interested to know more about This. I
Great video - quick and straight to the point. Excellent tips to get started. I just wish it was as simple as you made it seem :-)
