I know there's some friendly folks over in Redmond who like to read SEOmoz, so I'll make this as short and painless as possible.
The MSN search engine currently uses link neighborhoods to judge if a .com site is targeted internationally (like, say - to Canada). So, if lots of links point at your .com site from .ca domains hosted in Ottawa, even if you want to be targeting the US, you might not show up at all in MSN.com and instead, rank at Sympatico (or MSN.ca - they're a big provider of Internet service up there).
So, let's say you're a clever spammer with some new competition (or some older competition who doesn't have too many links). And, let's say you also have access to a good number of Canadian links. Sound like a recipe for trouble, eh?
(sorry - couldn't resist...)
p.s. Thanks to a little bird for news on this one. You rock, dude :)
I read about algorithms doing this quite a while ago, and I thought this was something that was more or less implemented in all of the major SEs....maybe Im just on glue.
Sverre
doh...Im referring to one of Laura's links there...the McAnerin site. Good read btw...
How about if you have a site that is building a global portfolio of links? What will that do for you?
It certainly hasn't affected SEOmoz, and we have at least 25-30% of our links coming from non-US domains (lots of Eatern European, Japanese, Korean, Chinese, French and South/Latin American attention).
Thanks, Rand. Good news!
I have to totally agree with that. I had a great bunch of inbound links from .CA for our website, and I recently bought a paid link on www.topdesignfirms.com, and it added like 100 000 links to my MSN total (good job MSN...)... And guess what? I vanished from Sympatico.ca and went on top ranking on MSN.com for my French keywords...
Should we call that stupid geotargeting? YES!
Not really the same for Google & Yahoo. Rand's links on the geolocation subject:

And yeah little bird, you effin' rock.
Great One Rand :) Well What I understand here is if we have .com domain the link pointing to us from .com will be benificial for us.
If we have .ca domain then the links coming from .ca and .com will be benificial for us in MSN rankings.
IS It?
Well It means reagionalise domains should have regionalise pointed links, but what about if we have .ca domain and getting links from TLDs this might be helpul for us or not. Is this same for Google and Yahoo?
"One another question Rand here, I have great intereset in web tool development. How to get the google and other search engine result database without using there APIs."
Thanks & Regards
