7:15 am: Wake up
7:45 am: Head to gym
8:00-9:00 am: Work out
9:00-10:00 am: Drive home, shower, get ready for work
10:15 am: Get to office
10:20 am: Have a bagel (Blueberry. That's a good bagel.)
10:30-12:30: Read/respond to emails, edit blog/YOUmoz
12:30-1:30 pm: Take our newest hire, Sarah, out to lunch (ooh, sushi). Charge $90 (don't judge, we fed eight people) to company card (thanks, SEOmoz!)
1:30 pm: Apologize to Rand for forgetting to invite him to lunch (Oops. Aw, he looks so sad.)
1:31 pm: Decide to give Rand lunch receipt later.
1:35-2:30 pm: Start to get back on track with tasks, until...
2:30 pm: Dave Naylor pops his fookin' head in our office
Happy to see us, as always
2:35-3:20 pm: Leave office to get coffee with Dave
3:25 pm: Head back to office
3:35 pm: Leave office again to get coffee with Scott and a potential client
4:15 pm: Head back to office
4:20 pm: Come in and see that during the forty five minutes I was gone, a giant piece of furniture has been ripped out of the "pit" and is now sitting in our kitchen
The desk...
...is now in our kitchen
4:30 pm: Notice on my way to the bathroom that we have received a ransom note from the folks at Pole Position Marketing that threatens to release incriminating photos of Brock Sampson if we fail to meet their demands. (For background information about Brock, please see this post and his corresponding resume.)
4:35 pm: Wonder if Stoney deGeyter actually gets any work done, or if he just spends his days plotting ways to mess with SEOmoz
4:36 pm: Realize that I haven't gotten any work done
4:37 pm: Look over at Jane, who is actually working (on her presentation for SMX London. Look how happy she is! Being productive is good!)
Jane being a diligent worker
4:38 pm: Feel guilty
4:40 pm: Look at my task list
4:40 pm: Look at the clock
4:40 pm: Think to myself, "Ah, the hell with it," snap some photos, and start putting together this blog post
And that, my friends, is just another day at the office. ;)
[Postscript: Of course this isn't how things are typically run around here, but today was just so damn odd that I had to share. I may put up an actual "typical day" post soon to prove to you naysayers out there that yes, I actually do earn my paycheck.
Hey, that sounds like fun. Let me play:
Usually, it all sort of gets hazy after that...
Hahaha, I picture you on both knees, shaking your fists towards the sky. "Critchlowwwww!"
LOL - This is too funny Dr Pete and Rebecca. If the SEO community had a weekly TV drama show (for those in the UK, think neighbours) the whole show would be filled with dramatic scowls between Dr Pete and Will.
Also Dr Pete, I'm totally in the same place as you with the snooze. My longest I've ever snoozed was 2.5 hours...... My snooze goes off every 5 mins.
Wow, 2-1/2 hours; that must be some kind of record. I once took a 1-1/2 hour shower, but that's because I fell alseep standing up.
I also suspect, from the conversations on SEOmoz, that Will and I are among the least likely people here to be arch enemies of anyone. I suppose that's why, in my head, it's so funny.
Ah. You see that's where you're going wrong. 12-martini lunch *then* comment on blogs ;)
He says at 8am.... Hmmmmm.
Go on Pete, you're only 50 points behind your nemesis. :)
Ah. But the point is, he was in front until recently ;)
CRITCHLOW!!!
To quote Daffy Duck: "Of course you realize, this means war." ;)
I guess that means I should stop thumbing up your comments ;)
12 martini lunch deserves some serious thumbs up.....
My day:
1:20am - Go to sleep after answering blog questions
7:00am - Woken up by Mystery Guest
7:30am - Really woken up by Mystery Guest
8:30am - Get through important morning emails and bowl of cereal
9:00am - Dropped off by Mystery Guest in Queen Anne for meeting with BuddyTV
10:00am - Figure out why BuddyTV's broken out listings dissappeared for "Rock of Love" search
11:00am - Grab cab back to SEOmoz offices
11:10am - Have meeting with Scott & Sarah to discuss new designer position
11:30am - Call with Steven from iFloor - explain why title tags should have less keyword stuffing
12:30pm - Miss lunch with other mozzers, feel sad
1:00pm - Grab gyros with Christine, who's filling in for Gillian while she's galavanting around Portugal
1:30pm - Start putting together blog post for Mona's interview
2:30pm - Is that a British accent I hear?
2:31-5:30pm - Hang out with Dave, grab coffee, walkt through secret projects, tools, talk smack about Google, hear surprisingly good things about Microsoft and film a 20 minute long whiteboard Friday (where Dave reveals way, way too much)
6:00pm - Get ride home from MG
9:30pm - Back to work...
Ah, the joys of running a small business :)
You know...if you trim down that interview for a regular whiteboard friday, I'm sure the full length version would make for great premium members only content :)
seconded - a 20 min premium member only whiteboard friday with Dave! Excellent idea!
Fookin' brilliant!
Much as I love all of you beautiful Premium folks, I've already started chopping this thing for a super-sized WBF...and I'm not gonna go back and re-cut and render it at this point. So, perhaps to your chagrine, every SEOmoz reader, free or paid, will get a three-part, Naylorrific megaMegaMEGA Whiteboard Friday this week...set aside plenty of time to watch it!
Awesome - I wasn't really bothered wheather it was premium or not, I just wanted to watch Dave sharing too much on camera!! :-)
Looking forward to it immensely!
Dude, you had that meeting with ME!
*grabble* *grabble*
Damn... Sorry about that Jeff - my bad.
Thank God! I read that and thought, "did I forget an entire meeting yesterday?!" I know I'm gettin' old, but dayum!
I would have thrown in . . .
Read Rebecca's blog post about her day
Log on to Sherpa, Monster, etc. to find a replacement for Rebecca
It would have fun to see her freak out. ;-)
Shame on me, huh?
Haha, I'd make sure to invite him to lunch today. ;)
But your handpicked crew makes coming to work so much more fun....
4:55 am - alarm goes off to Def Leppard's "Let's Get Rocked"
5:20 am - out the door headed to the office
5:45-6:00 am - firing up laptop (it's windows vista)
6:00am - 4:45pm - plot ways to mess with SEOmoz
We'll get you deGeyter, and your little blog too!
nice reply scott.....
No break for lunch? I'm impressed by your dedication!
what, you don't eat at your desk? oh, wait... that's right... you don't even work at your desk!
5:45am - Get up, caffeinate.
6:00am - Dragged outside by dog.
6:02am -7am - Dragged around streets of Seattle by dog.
7am - 9am - Get ready for work while keeping a suspicious eye on dog.
9am - 5pm - Sit in my corner and work while Rebecca messes about.
Constantly: eat a lot, think about dog.
5:45am. DOES.NOT.COMPUTE.
Dog says "no" to sleeping in. I'm also obsessed with both running a long way and arriving at work on time, and it's necessary to get up early to achieve both those things!
I'm with you, Tom. AT 5:45 am I roll over, grab my cell phone, crack an eye open, look at the time, go "Woo hoo, another two hours of sleep!", roll back over, and go to sleep.
Subsistute dog for children and I'm in the same boat. They don't try and drag me round Seatle though.
This may be too personal, but what time do you go to bed? I'm asleep from 2am - 6:30am, it's very sad and want to make sure other people are suffering as well (glad to hear rand is).
I actually go to bed pretty early... husband starts work at 7am so we're sleeping by 11!
You think 11 is early? Try 10, Jane. I don't know that I've been up past 11:00 since the moz after party...!
Don't you need your beauty sleep?
Now that is not a nice nickname for the husband.... must be a kiwi thing
Isn't that the same job that George on Seinfeld had?
Pretty much, DrDave. I sit around, make one witty and/or astute observation, causing everyone to laugh, then stand up and leave on a high note. "Good night, everybody!"
Showmanship. Definitely the way to go.
Do you have any nickname fights around the office? Maybe I'll send up a Huskies 00 jersey for "Koko" TBD.
Rebecca: You do realize that most people would get fired by writing something like this down publicly? :)
Did I hear someone say that Rebecca was getting fired!!!
Fired? Who got fired? Rebecca fired Rand? Awesome!
From what I can make out (and from reports on the ground) the office is in turmoil right now. After seeing Rebecca's post Jane finally had enough and decided to take matters into her own hands by 'taking her out'. Little did Jane realise that in fact Rebecca was part of an alliance with Scott which was plotting to usurp Rand for control of the company. With Gillian out of town it so happend that at the same time that Jane arrived to deal with Rebecca, Scott and Rebecca were confronting Rand for control of the company and had him cornered.
Of course, Rand knew about all these plots since he knows everything that goes on in the mozplex and had been monitoring the employee's facebook walls (where of course they had been plotting, how else could they coordinate plans?). Unfortunately for Rand, his plan to stop the coup had heavily involved Jeff and after forgetting he had a meeting with him earlier in the day Jeff actually decided to side with Scott and Rebecca in the uprising.
At this point, gunfire was heard and our reporter on the ground (who will remain nameless for now) had to make a dash for the exit, barely escaping with his life.
As yet, none of the mozzers have left the building. Are any of them still alive? Will Dave naylor step in and force an aggressive takeover of the company? The last we heard from inside the offices was a blood curdling scream of CRITCHLOWWWWWWWWW!!
Tune in to next week's episode of 'The Moz' to find out what happens!
Brilliant! Naylor was obviously scoping the place out for a commando-style assault next week. Gillian left for "Portugal" to maintain plausible deniability.
This is the kind of thing that happens when you get venture capital.
"plausible deniablity" - genius. I hadn't even thought of that angle! And Gillian seemed so calm when we met her last week. Wow - the ruthless world of business.
Venture funding one week, your office in ruins and half your employees holed up in a bloodthirsty battle for control of the company the next.
If any of you come out of the smoking ruins ok and without venture funding, see if you can hitch to London. I'm sure we'd find a use for you :)
Haha, you wish Aussie. Stop trying to steal me! :P
We'd get fired for not writing stuff like this.
I love the way at the end of the ransom note those guys still wouldn't spell out their email address, they had to put the brackets in it to stop the spammers scraping it!
I think when the letters are hand picked from newspapers and cut out individually your email address is pretty safe from the scrapers!
so how was er, "coffee", with Dave?
Fookin' lovely.
lol... I hope you dont get paid by the hour :-)
Rand if I promise to spend 3 hours answeing email and edit the YOUmoz posts instead of 2 can I have Rebecca's job? I'll bring my own lunch too and save the company credit card some charges too.
Sounds like my kinda place, to be honest. One day...
Whatever you do, do not play Desktop Tower Defense or else your schedule will really go to pot. I am still going through detox after a 2 week long addiction during which my websites were deeply neglected. -TWITCH- -TWITCH- -TWITCH-
Good to know I'm not the only one who has the occasional unproductive day :)
Great blog Rebecca. One of my all time favorites. We all have these days when we look back and go "what in the world did I do today?"
You're a blogger to end all bloggers. Well, you and THE Lisa. :) These kinds of posts break up the monotony that can happen sometimes in our world. I thank you for that.
We need a lot more posts like this ;-)
Is DaveN still in town - I'd like to see him contribute to a Fookin' WhiteBoard Friday with beer-in-hand
No beer, but Dave's on like Donkey Kong in this week's WBF.
I'd love to throw-in another joke about this WBF sounding fookin' grand... but I'm afraid that doing so could tarnish SEOmoz's good name since this post is probably going to start ranking for the term "fookin" any day now...
Actually, on second thoughts you've got DaveN doing a WBF... and here I'm worried about tarnishing the Moz name
phew... that gets me off the fookin' hook
Man... I work far too many hours in a day :)
That's exactly what I was thinking! 9 hours? Luxury! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xe1a1wHxTyo
This is why I love you guys!
I love it... I did just about the same thing (minus the $90 lunch), and just looked at my list and thought, ahhhh, screw it, to late to do anything today :)
Football game comes on soon anyway. Scott
can i have a job?
Rebecca you are wonderful. It is nice to love your job the way you do!
Starting around 10am is the only way to go...! Mind you, I also work (I use the term loosely here) til midnight and most weekends and holidays....so I think that makes up for that. (At least that's how I justify it to myself when I take off to ride my horse every afternoon...) I don't think I could function anymore if I had to get to a job and sit at my desk by 8am. that's just so wrong!
Man wish I could get away with showing up at my pc around 10:15 am. So lucky!
twitter seomoz style ... i like it
I love it. Kept telling Rand for months to do it...
Poor SEOmozzers working with just ONE monitor....
How do you get anything done?
Actually, our developers have dual monitors. Just the scrubs (me, Jane, Scott, Rand) have one.
One piece each..:) Or you guys have Kuru Kuru Sushi now days?
Yeah... Sure. Not typical. You're just saying that so the rest of us stop contemplating suicide over our own work day.
sounds like a day at my office, apart from putting together the blog post!
What can I say? Lots of people would kill for your work (including me) :P
please tell me you need a brilliant interactive copywriting professional in your life!!!!!!!!
So...you guys hiring??
Damn you... that's it, I'm moving. Got any "jobs" going?
;)
I've been thinking about this a lot lately and wondering how much time other SEOers spend on client sites versus networking versus making their own sites better.
Now I can see that mozzers are all about fun. I wanna work their!!
How the heck did you feed 8 people sushi with $90?!!!
Most everyone had bento boxes. Bento boxes = cheaper.
Rebecca, how come you do not include any photos of yourself, just other Mozers?
