I thought it would be interesting, 24 hours after we launched the new domain (0awards.org) yesterday, to see how many search engines had us indexed (along with the few thousand links & mentions that popped up). Here's the results:
- Google - 1 mention from a few weeks ago on Kat's blog
- Yahoo! - 98 mentions around the web, including the domain itself
- MSN - 1 mention, same as Google
- Ask - No results, sadly
- Exalead - long shot, but also nothing
- Technorati - 34 posts from different sources
It will be interesting to keep track of the results over time. Yahoo! looks pretty damn impressive, though. Maybe they really do have the bigger index now.
Wow... As of today, MSN has 490 results, Yahoo! has 475 and Google still only has one. Something makes me think this BigDaddy switchover has not been a positive one for finding new information.
Particularly since we've had more than a few referral searches from visitors who looked for "web 2.0 awards" at Yahoo! and MSN. Pretty miserable relevance for Google.
I have had great success with google and yahoo by using sitemaps. It was less than 1 week on one site and they indexed every item on the sitemap. I wrote an article about it on my blog.
Nice plug at the end.
Hey can you blame a guy for trying :)
We don't have any specific rules about it, and they've all got link condoms on, anyway, so it's no harm. At least it's relevant(ish).
Well, actually, I read the piece and it's more about sitemaps - so it's not really relevant(ish), but at least it's not complete spam/link drop.
I honestly wasn't even thinking about it untill jonkemp posted. But on a sidenote, on one of my enterprise sites, we had a huge success using the sitemaps to get indexed. I really was thrown back on how fast it worked. I would love to hear your take on this Rand sometime. John

I don't think the Google sitemaps are very useful for me except for the new stats they are providing. They don't really fluctuate much for me enough to check them frequently though. Google won't index you unless they find a link anyway, sitemap or not.
