Recently Firefox automatically updated to version 5, and with that update came a nightmarish scenario: virtually every Firefox SEO add-on suddenly ceased to function.
By now many of these add-ons have been repaired, but at the time I was rescued by a side project of mine – a portable SEO Browser designed to run from a thumbdrive, complete with all my favorite tools and SEO gizmos. I've been meaning to share this idea with the Moz community for some time, and in the light of the morning's Firefox add-on debacle, I think there's no time like the present:
Of course, saving myself from a Firefox update wasn't the intended purpose of my SEO thumbdrive, the original idea was to have browser full of SEO tools I could carry around with me at all times. That way whenever a friend or acquaintance asks me to take a quick 'look at their SEO' I'd have a full array of tools at my disposal, rather than just their blank browser.
Side Note: Do you get asked to examine websites at parties too, or is that just me?
As it turns out, there are several other benefits to a portable SEO browser:
- It can be used on a desktop/laptop as a separate install of Firefox, so you can keep a clean main install for your browsing pleasure. (I'm a Chrome man myself, but plenty of folks use FF.)
- You can drop a copy on someone's desktop - fully configured and ready to go. (Incredibly helpful for getting new employees up to speed, or helping an SEO newbies help themselves.)
- You maintain direct control over updates, so you'll never accidentally outdate your SEO add-ons.
If you're interested in setting up your very own portable SEO Browser, you will need:
- A Thumbdrive with at least 250 Mb capacity.
(I love my Patriot Xporter XT although it's admittedly not the sleekest drive on the market.) - Access to both a PC and a Mac.
- About 30 minutes of time.
Many of you already have these items, so let's get started.
PC Installation
- Plug your Thumbdrive into a PC you have access to.
- Download and Install Firefox Portable.
The core component of the SEO Thumbdrive is Mozilla Firefox, Portable Edition, a PC-only version of Firefox designed to be run from (you guessed it) a portable device. Firefox Portable lets you carry all your SEO extensions and bookmarks with you, while leaving no personal information behind on the machine you run it on. Download the Firefox Portable installer, and then install it directly onto your thumb drive, ideally in a folder marked “PC” or “Widows” to keep it separate from the Mac installation to follow.
- Launch Firefox Portable and Install Your Favorite SEO Add-ons
Because every plugin you install in Firefox Portable will be carried with you, and you won't be using it for normal browsing, there's no reason to go light on the number of add-ons you install (save personal taste). There are a lot of spectacular SEO add-ons out there, here are a few of my favorites:- Firebug - Absolutely vital for examining/debugging technical SEO issues.
- FlashBlock – Ultra-simple flash blocking with one-click reactivation.
- Web Developer - Lets you disable Javascript, Cookies, Images and CSS to see a site the way spiders do (plus dozens of advanced features more relevant to web developers).
- MozBar - The SEOmoz toolbar – PageAuthority, DomainAuthority, direct interface with Open Site Explorer, and more nifty functions than you can shake a stick at.
- Google Toolbar - Get PageRank straight from the source, and you can turn off pretty much all the other functions.
- User Agent Switcher - The next best way to pose as a searchbot if you're not using MozBar.
- RankChecker - A tool by Aaron Wall, very handy for quick low-volume ranking checks. (Requires registration to download)
- SEO For Firefox - Another tool by Aaron Wall, I mostly leave this one turned off, but the SEO XRay functionality can be quite useful (Requires registration to download)
- Customize Toolbar Layouts (Optional)
All those plugins you just installed probably made a huge mess of your Firefox Portable browser window, luckily the visual formats of most of these tools are fairly malleable!
- Right-click in the toolbar area and select "Customize…"
- From here you can reorder all your add-ons, move buttons around, and even hide functions you don't need by dragging them to the “Customize Toolbar” window.
- If you're feeling advanced, you can even play with the "space" and "flexible space" options to beautify your layout.
- Consolidate your chosen features into as few menu bars as possible, and hide the rest.
- Install Additional SEO Tools
Turns out many SEO tools/programs run just fine from a thumbdrive, so you might consider rounding out your new portable toolkit by installing a few.- Xenu's Link Sleuth (PC) - Your own personal site crawler, finds broken links, catalogs files, builds sitemaps, etc..
- Screaming Frog (Mac/PC) – An SEO influenced Xenu alternative, more robust functionality but costs 99£. (See Peter Meyers' post on Xenu vs. Screaming Frog)
Free version works fine from thumbdrive, paid version untested. - Does your favorite SEO application run from a thumbdrive? Test it out and share results in the comments.
- Test
Disengage your thumbdrive, take it to another PC and open your portable SEO Browser- Make sure no instances of Firefox are currently running on the computer your thumbdrive is plugged into. If Firefox is already running, activating your SEO Browser may cause an error message or cause new windows to open in the system-based instance of Firefox, rather than your portable version.
And Voila! You now have a highly transportable SEO arsenal (besides the one you keep atop your shoulders) that you can carry with you at all times. The only thing that remains is to repeat the process on a Mac with a few subtle differences:
Mac Installation
- Plug your Thumbdrive into a Mac you have access to
- Download and Install Portable Firefox
For the Mac installation instead of installing Firefox Portable, you'll be installing...wait for it... Portable Firefox! (Amazing right?) Download the Portable Firefox installer, and then install it directly onto your thumb drive, ideally in a folder marked “Mac” or “Apple” to keep it separate from your PC installation.- The installation is a bit more of a drag-and-drop than the PC version.
- Launch Portable Firefox and Install Your Favorite SEO Add-ons
You know the deal. - Customize Toolbar Layouts
(if you feel like it) - Install Additional SEO Tools
Xenu may not be an option on a Mac, but the Screaming Frog is still a viable option.- Mac users, are there any other favorite applications that would run from a thumbdrive?
- Test
Disengage your thumbdrive, take it to another Mac and open your portable SEO Browser.
And bam, there you have it – your personalized cross-platform ultra-transportable SEO Browser and toolkit. Anyone else need a cigarette?
P.S. In the spirit of Jason Freedman's recent article You don't get shit you don't ask for: if you enjoyed this post you can follow me on twitter at @allforJesse -- we'll chat about neat SEO things, it'll be great.
Thanks Jesse,
Seriously, this is the most useful post I've read on SEOmoz in quite a while. I get tricked into updating FF everytime and go through the same thing.
You are entirely and most certainly welcome :)
A lot of useful information in this post! You can also do this so you could have multiple browser versions for browser testing, since you can't always easily have multiple versions installed on the same computer.
The Portable App Directory at https://portableapps.com/apps has all kinds of portable apps designed to be installed on thumb drives (including a portable version of Google Chrome).
My husband did something like this years ago when he was in college and didn't have a laptop. He installed portable versions of all of the software he needed, along with his files, and was able to have all of his schoolwork with him and use any random computer lab computer and have everything he needed there on the thumb drive.
Up and running thanks to your post. Maybe now I won't break into a cold sweat next time Firefox updates and tells me my SEO addons aren't compaptible.
If I can save one SEO from Firefox induced cold sweat, then it was all worth it.
Nice tip, I love making things simple and portable...
I'm going to choose not to do this. Otherwise I wouldn't have a life outside SEO, lol. Interesting idea though.
Thanks Jesse for a really cool and inspiring article. I say inspiring because as well as SEO stuff I could see how this could be such a wonderful, personalized and yet geekily-charming gift for all kinds of occasions.
For example I could set up a thumb drive as a birthday present for a particular friend with serious substance abuse problems (I'm talking chocolate here not heroin!) that would help her locate resources for her addiction wherever she travelled as well as photos, fun apps, chocolate-centric games etc. etc.
As for people asking you to evaluate websites at parties - this used to happen to me when I worked at a computer store (i.e. my computer keeps doing this weird thing/showing this odd screen etc). Just tell people you're a mortician/undertaker when they ask what you do - I guarantee they'll change the topic pronto :)

Sweet Idea... carry all your add-ons with you! I suggest adding SEO quake and Page Speed for Fire bug to your tools as well.
+1 for SEO Quake and Page Speed.
Another useful add-on is HttpFox. I use it to check redirects, cookies and server GET/POST messages.
I'm a huge fan of SEO Quake and Fire bug! I looked up HttpFox and looks pretty sweet! Seems to provide a lot of information. Do you use any other add-ons? I used to use Pinger to check links.
That is a pretty good idea. I've had Firefox Portable for a while now, and this is a great way to make use of it.
For those that would like to try to use their old addons when a new Firefox version breaks them -- give https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/add-on-compatibility-reporter/ a try.
Add-on Compatibility Reporter will let you enable and disable addons so that you can test them for yourself and see if they Really are "broken".
Hi
I never knew you that this could be possble and I look forward to linking this post to my portable hard drive review site as this offer individuals the option to do alot more then just store their personal documents and files.
Please continue to share any other useful advice one can do with portable hard drive as I look forward to implement this asap and have my portable seo drive as well I like google chrome but I am now beginning to use firefox myself.
Amazing tip all around not just seo
Akil
This is one of the more useful posts that I have read on SEOMoz over the past 5 years. Thanks for taking the time out to be thorough and for getting my wheels turning!
Great insight I'm excited to look more into SEO.
Thanks Jesse, some great add-ons listed here ;)
Cool share! simple yet interesting......
Jesse, great idea! thank you for sharing this great tip and for making my life just a little easier ; ) my thumbs up and follow are on their way
Ahh, modern age 'mix-tape'! I like it.
Thanks for the tips on how to get around Firefefox SEO add on ceasing to work. I will definitley have to try this out as I have been frustrated on not being able to use it!
Thank you jasse . You are givien great tips for seo
These tools are not working on latest verson of firefox. What to do?
I find throwing my firefox install in dropbox as an archived folder is great as I can rarely be bothered carrying a usb drive with me everywhere (I know they're small but I'm forgetful too!).
Great Idea, I have been using a thumb drive to carry around installation files of my common tools but never thought to just install the browser on the drive. Gonna get started on this right away. Thanks for the new perspective.
Thanks for these, I'll just try to find the mac version
Why all this effort? Never heard of disabling extension checks? Just because FF has a new version number doesn't mean that the plugins cease working. Simply enter about:config, click on "I'll be careful, I promise" and add a new value:
extensions.checkCompatibility
when done, assign false to it and you're all set.
awesome! this is a great protable idea. It should work great for when I'm at school.
Very cool post. You can either look really cool or like a total nerd whipping out your customized thumb drive SEO browser. I suppose it's all in the presentation. I'm guessing as I fumble with the thumb drive and my glasses fall off, I will fall into the latter camp.
I can add SEO Doctor add-on to the list. It's quite usefull for on-page SEO :) Here's the link - https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/seo-doctor/
This is a great idea. I always have a thumbdrive around but never thought about utilizing it for on the spot SEO. Thanks for sharing, im definitely going to set this up myself. Pus, as Keri suggested, it could be a great way to have multiple versions of a browser for testing (IE 6 or 7 for instance.)
This is awesome, I'm definitely going to make myself one of these--it'll make meetings with clients go so much smoother!
It's a great idea, it even made me think that I could make myself a Chromium OS bootable USB key. This way I could carry not only a web browser, but a complete OS plugged into the clouds with my SEO tools and stuff!
I thought about doing the same thing using a bootable drive but from what I gather, it's a pain to create a chromium OS thumb drive. I had the OS downloaded but never went any further with the project
Thanks for your post Jesse! that's great! And it could be a great idea for a christmas present for my SEO employees! LOL :)
And from that moment on, each of Victor Rottenstein's employees planed to wreak unholy vengeance upon Jesse Avshalomov.
Great idea!, I can recall there were times when I was at a client's office and my laptop was inop. This seo/flash tool would have done the trick!
Awesome share. I already carry a thumbdrive around with "must have" install files for my favorite applications. This post has really just given me an extra +1 to my portable-geek status.
Awesome. I've carried a thumbdrive with me on my keychain for years. Based on the suggestions here, I have added Firefox (I am usually a Chrome guy...) and many of the SEO add-ons mentioned. It's already come in handy couple of times when I've been away from the office.
Great idea, one I have thought about then forgoten about, would have been useful before today and defiantly useful from today on! -Thanks!
What a simple, yet great idea! I can already think of so many uses. and thanks to all the commenters for your tips and add-on suggestions!
Cool - didn't realize FF5 had a portable edition. I've got an IronKey drive, which has FireFox installed on it, but your way is a lot cheaper. Of course, my USB drive self-destructs if someone tries to open it ;)
I really miss the days when every program could just run from a disk. For a little extra copy protection, Microsoft's invention of the system registry turned everything into a huge PITA.
will this technique works on all Windows Operating System? (WIN XP , VISTA , 7) ?? O.o;
(After re reading you might have been asking just if you could make this work on other OS's not make OS's bootable to thumb drive, which the answer is... If the Browser you put on the thumb drive is forward or backward compatible with OS in question then yes. In this exact instance I would think this would even work on a linux system, but defintily on a Windows based system)
Sort of....
You need a bootstrapper cmd for OS's
Make USB drive bootable:
https://www.bootdisk.com/pendrive.htm
Then You could always check out....
Hirens Boot Disk: https://www.hirensbootcd.org/hbcd-v140/ This also includes Mini Windows XP which can even run striclty in RAM
Tyr everything at your own risk, and own parrel of time, as sometimes the scripting can become a headache
Thanks for the help.. so you were saying if i am installing this firefox from my windows 7, i can easily plug it into say windows xp and all the tools will run fine?
Yes, it should work correctly.
You know what is funny, you just can't know everything. Today there is so much information going around that it is literally an information overload. 100's of emails per day, news posts by the second, twitter, FB, etc... I can't tell you how happy I am that this blog doesn't have 100's of posts per day. If it did, I would probably never use it because it is hard enough to keep up with all the information already and still get some work done and have a few minutes of personal time. People write books about this stuff, but at the end of the day, you still have to be connected.
But this is great! Just the mere fact that FF has a downloadable portable version is great news to me. I'm sure many people already new this and I was one of the last to know, but I am soooo glad that I do now know. I freaked out when I updated my FF and all my SEO tools where gone. I immediately uninstalled everything and revert back to me prior version.
I am going to have to look into this more with other programs too. It seems nowadays every time I take a new update from anyone it sets me back 2 days. I am actually getting afraid to download updates these days. What I have been doing up-to-now was simply waiting about 3-6 months to update, after the update had a chance to be Beta tested and all the quirks have been ironed out.
Thanks for the tip!
Awesome! Thanks a lot for the tips. I haven't done it yet but seems exciting!
One thing that many people seem to not understand is hot portable apps do not necessarily need to be installed on a thumb drive. If they are set-up as a proper thinstall, then you can make almost any appliation on your hard disk into a portable app. The advantage is that they have no effect on windows registry and you do not need to worry about conflicts.
In the case of a portable browser, you can keep a stripped down tool that still syncs passwords and bookmarks. create a shortcut to the exe and you can have almost any tool ready for your specific need.
