Currently, SEOmoz has the dismally boring and horribly generic tagline, "a search engine optimization resource." With all the tagline and article headline writing we do for clients, you'd think we could do better, but sadly, we're suffering from the same disease as the cobbler's children. Thus, it's with great hope that we turn to you, our most stalwart fans, for ideas.
Here's a few we've come up with so far:
- Because the Internet is Hard
- Carefully Nurturing the Seeds of Search
- Like DMOZ, Only Useful
- Your Decoder Ring for the Secret Language of Search
- Where No Good Search Goes Unoptimized
- The Daily SEO Show
- There's No Place Like Search
- An Owner's Manual for the WWW
- Google Asked Us to the Prom, But We Already Had Plans
- It's Magically Searchlicious
- Into Every Search, A Little Marketing Must Fall
- A Rosetta Stone for the Language of Search
- Delectable Tidbits of Searchy Goodness
- Boldly Searching Where No Engine Wants Us
If you have a favorite among these, we'd appreciate your feedback and if you have a new idea, that would be even better (as we can't find one among these that we love). If the winning tagline is suggested by a commenter, we'll be happy to give you full credit on our new about us page (with a shiny link, too) as a way of saying thanks.
p.s. Progress on the new site is coming along quickly - we're hoping for a release before SES Chicago in December. I see Jim's working away at his new site, too - let me urge you, Jim, to 301 your blog to your main site so you can see the benefits of all those links helping out WeBuildPages. I just want what's best for the guy :)
p.p.s. Just noticed that Mr. McCarley recommended a post on this subject way back in May. Sorry for the delay on that, and thanks for the suggestion!
"Your Team for Website Success"
"Making Yours a Winning Website"
SEOmoz - We'll make you money, stupid! SEOmoz - 'cos this stuff ain't going away SEOmoz - You know it makes cents
I have to say that I am inordinately proud of the last one....
As long as it isn't "50 cent".
Don't wanna get caught up in all that spam...
I'll start with a tag line:
Do ya wanna get High? Search Engine Optimization News and Classroom. Getting to the Top! For Discussions on Search Engine Optimization. Because Matt's My Friend. SEO White and Nerdy.
Rand - don't think I haven't thought about the 301ing my blog into wbp....I kept it seperate when I started so people would take my writing more seriously and not just think I was speaking for links to wbp...but perhaps I've transended that fear....hum....maybe I'll ask my readers next month for their thoughts...I know -a poll!
SEOmoz - Impossible to capitalize correctly!
HA!
Taking what EGOL had to say on the matter, here's another one.
SEOMoz: Traffic Conversion
You could add something in front like Build Traffic Conversion depending on your budiness direction but I think it works well as single words or a phrase. It's also KWs that we should probably all be targetting.
For fun... SEOMoz: Not Quite Copyblogger
SEOMoz - Be Found.
Here's my take, friends: What do your customers pay you for? They don't pay you for search engine optimization; that's merely how you deliver. Heck - they probably barely even know what seo is after you've done it for them for a year. They pay to be found.
It can be so hard to stay out of the weeds when you do these exercises for yourself.
I actually like this, or better yet, "Get Found" (as opposed to get lost).
Unfortunately, as I suspected, both of these are currently registered trademarks of other search marketing companies.
"Fo Shizzle Mozizzle" is, however, currently available. :P
I like your thinking Mike! Major props. Here's some variations:
SEOmoz--Find Yourself SEOmoz--Fit To Be Found SEOmoz--Found.
(on that last one, the period is essential. Kinda a typography thing. Crap, there I go over explainin' myself again.)
You know, I wanted to read the entire list, but I got about 3/4 through and forgot the tag lines I was thinking because there are so many creative ones here..and I didn't read through the whole list, so sorry if I stole your idea :)
I love the DMOZ one...
To steal the HP one slightly SEOmoz - reINVENTing search
To steal the IBM one slightly SEOmoz - reTHINKing search
SEOmoz - All I Want is One Link SEOmoz - Link Bait This! SEOmoz - Our Tail is Longer Than Yours SEOmoz - Optimize or Die ...take that P-Diddy! SEOmoz - Because sitting in traffic sucks SEOmoz - Optimizing With the User in Mind SEOmoz - Because Viral Marketing is a Good Thing SEOmoz - All the Search News That Isn't Fit to Print
I think I'm done...my brain hurts...
SEOmoz - So much more than Search
SEOMoz - Unclogging the tubes SEOMoz - Ranking # 1 in Google for "SEOMoz" since 2004
SEOMoz - Outrank
Create the world's first social tagline and have it change when a better one comes along - wisdom of crowds approach. Or you can just use this: https://www.emptybottle.org/bullshit/
Wow... everybody and his dog in this one!
The slogan could be a combination of some of these words: best leverage the unique reach of the Internet to increase visibility and achieve success. and consulting, Internet marketing and search engine optimization and high level of service and education
For example: Leverage, Reach, Capture. Reach for Recognition. Increase Visibility; Achieve Success. Internet Marketing Genius. Internet Marketing Madness. ? :) Expert Marketing Services & Education.
or totally abstract: Connect the Dots. Capture the Flag. In Reach. Get Attention. Get Noticed. Net Attention. Net Awareness.
or also: It's Yours. It's Your Internet. Internet Achievers. Your Internet Potential. Market Wise.
Also, moz comes from Mozilla right? Which comes from Mosaic Killa right? and Godzilla?
So SEOmoz means SEO Mosaic right?
So maybe the ideal slogan is (The) "Internet Marketing Mosaic"
or "The Internet Marketing Authority"
or "Big Scary SEO Dragon"
or "Competition Killa"
or "S.E.O.M.Oz - Search Engine Optimizing and Marketing by the cast of Oz"
or "The Wizard of Moz"
SEOMoz - Rich and compelling!
SEOMoz - Milk was a bad choice.
SEOMoz - You stay classy "web"
SEOMoz Engine Watch
SEOMoz - Yeah we got that!
SEOMoz - Yellow boots on the ground.
SEOMoz - Striving for your attention.
SEOMoz - Reduces your blogs traffic. ;-(

One more - "To Search is Human, To Rank, Divine."
SEOMoz - Digg it!
*out*
"SEOmoz: Now You're Found. "
then you could write the lyrics to Amazing Grace in the background.
And get lots of angry letters.
hehe.
So is it ok for me to steal ummm...use one that doesn't have a "TM" after it?
Hi,
I think you should go with something that could work both towards clients and blog readers. Also, aim one step higher in knowledge than the average Joe. My suggestion is:
SEOmoz - There's more to it than links
Taste it, let it grow on you.
How about something along the lines of:
SEOmoz | You found us, now let us help your customers find you...
Oh, I like that one!
I like this one a lot too. It is customer-centered and larger than search.
SEO Moz - the traffic starts here SEO Moz - where the traffic starts SEO Moz - green light for your traffic
Cheers,
Karen
Had to add:

ok, one more,
GOT TRAFFIC? (I just had to)
How about this one: "There you are!"
I believe it is pretty catchy and easy to remember. Also it is about search result not search as an action.
SEOmoz - Hits, lots of hits.
SEOmoz - Got on the search runway (nod to Branden)
SEOmoz - Your site get found
SEOmoz - More than cool shoes

I still like "Market Wise" but i'm sure it's taken.
Tag lines can be very limiting, especially in the internet industry where things change so fast. Is SEOmoz a search company? Maybe, but its also a marketing, viral marketing, copywriting company, etc. So i agree with Egol leave out the world search. Maybe play around with Optimisation, it covers a lot more than search, or in Egol words it’s "something BIGGER".
SEOmoz – Knowledge to optimise™ SEOmoz – Be optimised™
Or play around with the customer benefits SEOmoz will delivery, e.g.
SEOmoz – More traffic™
SEOmoz - Attracting Searchâ„¢ SEOmoz - Attractâ„¢ SEOmoz - Luring Searchâ„¢ SEOmoz - Lure the Webâ„¢ SEOmoz - Luring the Webâ„¢
I like lots of the ideas presented above... but I don't think that I would focus on search in the tagline. I'd go for something BIGGER. When your site is really successful most of your traffic is through links and type-ins. Also, you can help with conversions, ease of use and a lot more.
Focus on the bottom line. Make the tagline customer centered.
You make a valid point Egol.
I love HP's tagline, for instance. But what's the bottom line for SEO clients?
The problem is that this bottom line can't be translated into an action, like Invent (HP) or Think (IBM).
I think that they are "Website Success" clients. SEO is only one part.
You´re right.
A succefull website should provide "more business" or open up new untapped markets. Too bad many clients still see their websites as an online brochure of their company.
The sucess of the website is the success of their business.
Great Suggestions above. A few more:

I felt this sudden urge to take a peek and here you go name dropping! Um, yea... those were good in a witty-fun sort of way but imagine this...
A big story related to SEO hits the media. Jon Stewart with his serious face is about to interview Rand about SEO and the wacky world we live in (after all, he does fit the requirements: smart, knowledgeable, loves the Daily Show and has a hook: yellow shoes). Rand is honored and delighted to be on the show. What's the tag-line that has *just enough* fun to make sure Jon keeps a strait face but is savvy enough to get what you do across?
SEOMoz: Your source for search traffic.
Which reflects the value of your site (blog, articles, etc.) but also infers your service (source code... web development).
"It's Magically Searchlicious" is awesome too (must be Rebecca) and I'd have listed it twice, too ;)
Some other fun ideas:
Cutting out the crap
*ahem*
Traffic like magic... but a lot more expensive!
Actually the first part isn't so bad... Sounds like something Todd would come up with, though.
That'll be $19 :-)

and i was saving this for my first comment here :(
I would go with something that talks on what you do in simple terms:
SEOmoz- Helping customers find your business
or just completely zany e.g. Office Space...
SEOmoz - The ratio of people to cake is too big.
to talk about how to many sites exist that no one can ever see with marketing and SEO.
Love the Office Space one.
I like many of the suggestions so far but I think my favorite was actually stumbled upon by EGOL...
SEOmoz - something bigger...
although that might be a bit too vague. Maybe
SEOmoz - creating online phenomena
(and then you could use that very catchy, almost annoying "Phenomenon" song for commercials etc). To be honest though, I think the best tag lines tend to come from within the company. You guys know what you're all about. You know the character of your company and something that conveys that in a quick couple of words that stick in your mind is what you're looking for. Is there a certain phrase you guys use around the office a lot? Is there a certain phrase that people use when talking about your company or the site itself? Maybe it could be something as simple as
SEOmoz - directing traffic
We often use the phrase, "Stop looking at porn and get back to work." I don't know how catchy that sounds, though.
SEOmoz - Bringing Search to You
My favorites of the lines suggested so far:
Like DMOZ, Only Useful The Church of Search
Building on Roadies' suggestion... SEOmoz - GoogleDancing with the Stars
Others: SEOmoz - 99% Inspiration, 1% Optimization. SEOmoz - Rank Well.
I agree with several commenters who said you don't want it to be too much of an industry insider tagline (so maybe the DMOZ line isn't so good after all), as some of your potential clients will not "get it." I think the rotating tagline idea suggested by Megan is a good one.
I got a laugh from "Like DMOZ, Only Useful"
Then also thought of:
SEOmoz - Can you search me now?
SEOMoz - Search Marketing Gone Wild
SEOmoz - Bait and Search
Some I've liked from previous posts: TMS: SEOmoz - Taming the Search Frontier Sniper: SEOmoz - Lure/Luring the Webâ„¢ And varying on one of Roadies: Strategic Search Marketing Overall, I think it should reflect not only your consulting business, but the openness and community SEOmoz reflects and forms though the blog. This is why I think I like your "The Daily SEO Show" best so far. Also, having one tag line for your main page and another (or rotating set) for you blog may be a good option.
Lots of great ideas. Here's a couple more:

a few suggestions:

SEOmoz - The world of Search
SEomoz - Understanding Search
Take some inspiration fom W
SEOmoz - We Know The Google
I think "The Daily SEO" would be cool.
My partner and I are in the process of building a site that would use a similar mix of topical and funny taglines. We want to find a way to rotate the taglines so a different one shows up every page load (or maybe every day or something like that). If the lines are as witty as we think they are (ha! yeah right), people might get a kick out of reloading the page to see different ones.
Rand ... I think you should stay away from the "generic" cliche tag lines. Also, consider that many companies (especially the ones you might deal with) ... mid to big guys, don't know most of these industry words. Do they know Danny, Matt? Will they know what you're talking about?.
We all say ... "find a USP (unique selling proposition) and build on that" but it's easier said than done.
When I read a post by Andy Beal .. he described your team as "team like no other". Now that stuck with me. Is it a value tag line ... not directly, but it's something that gets noticed. You know best who your clients are and what they will notice.
I'd build around ...
"A Search Team Like No Other"
SEOmoz - The Church of Search!
Hmmm...
SEOmoz - The Web's Senior SEO Correspondent
SEOmoz - Righteous Search KungFu
SEOmoz - Go Ahead, Make My SERPS
SEOmoz - Make It Work
SEOmoz - We Got The Touch! We Got The Power! YEAH!
SEOmoz - Make The Web Work for You
SEOmoz - It's a Series of Tubes!
I think it's important to keep in mind 1) your viewers are SE marketers new and old 2) the end result is these marketers are trying (I would hope) to make Search better for the search engine user.
> The Other Side of Search > Ways to Build a Better Search > Search Engine Breakdown > Analysing Search So You Don't Have To. > Further Developing the Search Marketing Landscape
I like to think that you should focus not on what you do, but rather, what benefit you provide to your customers. This may sound crazy but don't focus on search engine optimisation! Instead, try and think what SEO gives your customers.
On that note, here are my ideas:
SEOmoz - Results that count
SEOmoz - Visibility on the web
SEOmoz - Be seen. Be found.
SEOmoz - You need to be seen to be found
SEOmoz - Making it easier for customers to find you
SEOmoz - Illuminating the world of search
Marketing Tagline:
"The Biz, The Blogs, The Best"
Benefit Taglines:
"Growth Through Search" "Profit Through Search" "Marketing + Optimization = Success" "You've found us - help others find you"
Other: "It's Better on Top!" "Rank with Rand"
