I'm not actually terribly nervous about speaking in front of an audience: the video camera for Whiteboard Friday troubles me much more. I like the idea of having a room full of people whom I can actually see. With a live audience, you can make eye-contact, scan the room, gauge people's demeanor and their reaction to your presentation. You can make subtle changes to your presentation accordingly. The hot glare of the studio lights and the judgmental eye of the camera give you no idea of how many people you're "talking to" and give you even less idea of how they're reacting to your blathering.
And it's not as though I have no experience performing in front of a crowd. However, the difference between athletics and public speaking is that, generally, athletes aren't required to face their spectators. At worst, there'll be part of the stadium facing you, but it is fifty meters away and you don't have to look anyone in the eye if you don't want to.
As if you all couldn't guess, my panel at London is about linkbait. I'll be giving a brief introduction to linkbait, although I'm pretty certain that most people attending a linkbait session have at least an elementary grasp on the concept. Thus, most of my presentation will be concerning creating linkbait for the "real world," where clients aren't particularly keen on the The Next 9 Children's Characters That Should Come Out of the Closet, no matter how many diggs it would receive.
This trip is also exciting to me for a couple of other reasons besides being my first speaking engagement.
- I haven't been out of North America since 2004. I haven't left the United States since 2005, when I spent three days in Vancouver, Canada. Which is... how to say this delicately... very similar to Seattle.
- I'm from New Zealand, which still suffers from being Britain Junior, as well as being Australia's Mini-Me. I've not been to either of those places since 2003. That's a long time spent driving on the right-hand side of the road and not being able to acquire good fish and chips.
- I wasn't allowed to leave the United States since my student visa ran out after I graduated from college. I received a work permit and then began the process of applying for residency, but if I'd left, I'd not have been able to return. Since my husband and my parents all live here, that would have been undesirable. Strangely, being allowed to live and work in the U.S. doesn't automatically allow you to re-enter after a trip away. That process requires more paperwork and more fees, so I just waited for the Green Card.
- I've been to England twice before, but went to Leeds, Sheffield, and Manchester. Now I actually get to check London out as well!
- I have a strange fascination with long aeroplane flights.
Go Jane, go! We're thrilled that you're presenting in London. Best of luck, and be sure to spend lots of time with those UK Black Hats - I hear they're the cat's meow :)
Best of luck on your presentation Jane! I'm sure you'll do fine.
The only thing that'll suck is that your fish & chips will cost you like US$200 nowadays!
From one Jane to another, have a great time in London! :)
Tho the North West is really where its at ;)
Did you watch Bad Boys last night?
No?! I just didn't want to say "shit" on the company blog because if would have been so unprofessional of me :P
Wait... Damn.
Great article. I like how you differenciate linkbaits with diggbaits. Hehe.
It's about making linkbaits for the "real world", and no matter how many diggs it would receive.
Keep up the good work. And enjoy your trip. :)
Have a great time, and I am sure you will do great.
You are already very "londonish" with that whole "aeroplane" thing. I have never been on an aeroplane, when I fly I prefer airplanes :)
You have no reason to fear anything, well, unless you get to London and every notes your "weird American accent" hehe
Thanks Pat! I'm glad you think I'll do awesome... and I'll make an attempt to leave all traces of Americanisms in Seattle, as I did the last time I visited New Zealand. People tend to make fun of you for saying "bathroom" instead of toilet and for pronouncing your "r"s.
Luckily there are so many Kiwis in London that most Londoners can even tell the difference between them & Australians....
;)
When were you in Manchester?
Is there someway you can let me know when something is going on here - I'd love to get to an event or conference!
Hope it didn't rain too much :) Good luck with SMX
Do I spy a fellow Mancunian?
Have a great time here in Blighty Jane, I'm going to miss the conference so will be looking forward to reading about.
If you get the chance for a trip out for food check out https://www.abeno.co.uk/ for some truly fantastic Okonomiyaki. It's worth the trip to London just for that.
north Manchester, neatly tucked into the armpit of the Pennines :)
Unfortunately, I was in Manchester for my former occupation of swimming, so I can tell you where the pool is but not much about Manchester SEO :D
London is great! I tried to get a job there from Holland 10 years ago but it appears those Brits didn't need anybody from the mainland :( They're too good themselves.
Good luck and you'll probably do as great as your WBFs (I mean that in a positive way)
Good luck to both of you. You'll probably like London but it's really polluted. I lived in London for about 8 months and didn't like it too much. Other parts of the UK were much nicer. But if you like big cities with lots of stuff gong on, you'll love London. Hope it goes well for you and Gillian.
The fish and chips are hit and miss. You have to know where to go so ask a local or two before heading out for some.
Looking forward to the post conference report.
Good Luck Jane!!!! If you posts are any indication of your presentations then you will rock!!!
Really? I think her posts suck.
(I'm KIDDING, folks. Jane will do well, I know it.)
Only I know that she's actually serious.
/goes away to cry/
Mission accomplished. Mwuaahahah!
Guys,
Thanks for the well-wishes! Looking forward to meeting you European SEOs soon :)
See you at SMX, and good luck with your presentation/speaking.
Hope Rand have given you enough pocket money to participate at the SMX London 2007 Party also.
Looking forward to seeing you Jane - I'm in the process of finding the best 'fush & chups' in Soho as I type...
I dont think there are any... lol... not in Soho anyway... But Mr Jerk on wardour street does serve some of the best Jamaican style chicken...
Enjoy your trip Jane!
I am originally from Germany and I went to the SES in London a few years back and really enjoyed London. One word of advise... crossing the roads is tricky...cars are coming from the other direction. You look left, they are coming from the right...LOL. Using the subway is pretty cool to get around and of course some sightseeing in town is a must.
Would love to head back for another conference
Travel safe and enjoy the trip.
Thanks! Being originally from New Zealand, I grew up with the cars coming from the opposite direction. However, I've been here for five years now and I assume that my brain will take a day or two to "remember" how the British system works!
Your going to do great Jane and I can't wait to see the results when you get back. Not sure I could get up there and do it. So you are a bigger man than me, lol.
Jane,
Good luck speaking at the conference. Better you than me. i don't mind addressing crowds of people, but I freeze if you put a microphone in front of my face.
I could shout to 300 people so they all hear and understand me, in fact I have on many occasions in my work as a photographer. I can not talk to two people if there is a microphone in front of me.
Jane, looking forward to hearing how the new panel format works out. I haven't seen or participated in that style of presentation before, so I would enjoy your comments on how well it works out once you wrap it up. Have a safe trip and a good time.
I hope you enjoy your trip here, and that you get a chance to spend some time away from the conference. There's a lot of great places in London, whatever you're into (unless it's countryside --- though the parks are great, I much prefer it down here in Cornwall).
As nicknick said, the Fish and Chips can vary a lot, so I hope you find a good chip shop. Don't limit yourself, though: there's every form of cuisine you can think of available in London somewhere, so you should find something to your taste.
Leeds get's it's second mention on the SEOmoz blog - Leeds ftw!
Looking forward to catching up - perhaps some fish and chips are in order! :-)
Really greasy fish and chips, please. Not these "healthy" breaded fish things we have here!
fishcoteque. No longer right outside the office, but still great greasy fish n chips. Sorry I'm going to miss you, Jane. Good luck - and knock 'em dead.
Forget the Fish n Chips. Better off going with England's national dish - Chicken Tikka Masala! Go to Soho, close your eyes, point your finger and eat there (at the restaurant) - you can't go wrong!!!
Even Sainsbury's serve a decent Tikka Masala. When I studied in London back in 2001 it was 2.99, making it a staple of the student diet... :)
lol... in soho these days it will end yuo up with food poisoning if you used the hit and miss strategy... lol - you will be at the Paddington Hilton - Edgware Road is an amazing area with huge Arab influence, and if you see this post while you are in London - try walking down and experiencing a Falafel at Maroush or helens down the road! Amazing stuff.
and if you dare, try shisha... lol - i wont explain what it is if you dont know.. hope to see you there!
As fo evening entertainment you arent far from Leicester Square and Oxford street - so you have a huge choice - some really good bars in Marble arch as well, which is just down the road...
Okay Rish, fair enough. It's been a couple years for me, but how about The Red Fort on Dean St? I can personally vouch for that one. Gosh, I miss that CTM!
hmmm... will have to give that one a try... there are quite a fw upmarket ones, including Soho Spice just off wardour street...
