I think I get asked this question on average 4X per week, more during conferences and after we've been in the press and less when I hide in the cupboard and make Brandon answer the phones. It's certainly a valid one, though and deserving of a definitive answer.
Here's what the "moz" in SEOmoz means:
- We're building off the history of organizations like DMOZ, Mozilla, Chefmoz, etc. - attempting to be open and engaged with our visitors
- Our company will be as transparent in its practices as possible, disclosing the kinds of competitive information that is normally kept secret
- We want to allow our users to participate in our project (thus, in the new version of SEOmoz, anyone will be able to contribute a blog entry in a separate, user-generated section - though this will be moderated)
- We try to aspire to the ideals of honesty, openness and integrity in everything we do. Although we haven't always perfectly lived up to this standard, it remains our guiding principle, rather than Google's "Do No Evil," SEOmoz is here to do "as much good as possible" for individuals, companies, clients and media in the SEO space
It's a bit cheesy, and it's actually not the most profitable way to operate a company. But, it is a great marketing tactic - one that's brought us a great deal of visibility - and a great way to make us proud of what we do. The "moz" is one of the things about our business that helps me sleep better at night, knowing that almost every day, at least a few people have benefited in their business or with their personal online endeavors, by reading SEOmoz.
BTW - I'm in no way suggesting that this is the only ethical way to run a company - far from it. I'm simply saying that this is the way Gillian and I had always wanted to run our company.
p.s. Lisa and Susan, now you don't have to capture Rebecca to find out.
Rand, there's nothing cheesy about it. Profit is not everything. Keep the "moz" culture as you move forward. Eventually, you might need to drop the "SEO" though. ;-)
You're a wizard
This post only addresses the ways SEOmoz resembles or uses similar policies as other companies that have used MOZ in their names. MOZ is short for Mozilla because the original domain name of the Open Directory Project was Directory.MOZilla.org instead of its current DMOZ.org domain name.
"The only ones among you who will be really happy are those who will have sought and found how to serve." ~ Albert Schweitzer.
Thanks Rand! And I gotta say, I admire your ideas about SEOmoz as a company whole heartedly.
Now tell us why its a dot-org and not a dot-com?
- Daniel
This question has been on my mind for some time. I even wikipedia'd 'moz'.
Finally I broke down and Googled 'what does the moz in SEOMoz mean'.
Now I know. I think! ;)
This is an admirable way to run a company. You definitely have my respect, trust and loyalty on SEO matters. Thanks for being willing to share your knowledge with us! I will keep coming back.
Awww, that's a great story......and all this time I thought that SEOMoz was some kind of veiled reference to the Wizard of Oz because you guys are located in the Emerald City and you have the Tin Man as your mascot (aka, Roger).
Feel free to use that if you ever get tired of the real story. :-) lol
Dana
Amazing ethos.
Rand, can I ask why you guys decided to go for an "internal" blog instead of an external one, linked to your company's website?
Was it just for the constant site update factor?
carfeu - I think an external blog wouldn't make any sense - why attempt to optimize for two sites? why separate our blog content or articles content from the tools and about us pages?
Whenever I make the recommendation that a client creates a blog, I always tell them to do it on their existing domain so the link love will pass through.
Agreed.
We are thinking about doing a company blog and I was already convinced that an internal one was the better option.
Thanks.
Why not start a forum? Why would you want to do a blog instead?
G-Man
We're going for something a bit more creative. A forum has never been something I wanted to run - there are already plenty of good ones in the SEO world.
It certainly is paying off in terms of the impressive Google Rankings:
As an SEO Experiment - it would be interesting to see how much more difference those keywords would in fact make if they were added to the Title as well Not only on Google - but Yahoo & MSN, which seems to really prioritize them.
A couple of years ago - it began making an awesome difference in seochat's rankings.
I think what you guys are doing is great! keep up the good work, you have my support!
You should post that on a special link to direct people to Rand!
G-Man
Will the new SEOmoz site be running on WordpressMU or a custom CMS?
We're all about custom-builds here, Simmal. Matt's building the new SEOmoz from scratch using CakePHP.
That's great. I am not as strong in PHP yet so I currently use Wordpress for CMS.
Hi all, i'm a boy form VietNam, i'm newbie...
I love Randky...! Love SEOmoz so much !
hope to see you a day
Thanks
