If we’ve learned anything in 2012, it’s that Google isn’t letting up on low-value tactics. We’ve had the Penguin update, 13 Panda updates (so many that we needed a new naming scheme), and a crackdown on low-quality Exact Match Domains (EMDs), to name just a few. While I can’t tell you Google’s next move, I can tell you one thing with absolute certainty – there’s more to come. So, how can you protect what you’ve built in 2013?
I was going to write a long list of suggestions, but I realized that they almost all boiled down to just one idea. I’m not going to toy with you – my top tip for 2013 SEO is this:
If at any point in 2012 you asked “What’s the best [X] for SEO?” (link-building tactic, tag, directory, etc.), you’re already in trouble. Any single-tactic approach is short-term at best. Real companies, real link profiles, and real marketing are rich with variety.
So, what does that mean, practically? I’m going to cheat a bit and split my one tip into five kinds of diversity that I think are critical to your SEO success in the coming years.
1A. Diversify Anchor Text
Let’s start with an easy one. We’ve all known for a while that overly aggressive inbound link anchor text was pushing the envelope, and the Penguin Update definitely reinforced that message. If every link to your site reads “buy best Viagra cheap Viagra today!”, it might as well read “spam spam spammity spam,” especially if it’s in a sentence like:
If you’re looking for the best price on the new iPad and iPad cases, then buy best Viagra cheap Viagra today! and get a free bag of Acai berries.
It’s not natural, and you know it. What’s the best way to make your anchor text seem “natural?” Stop obsessing over it. Yes, anchor text is a signal, but any solid link profile is going to naturally use relevant text and appear in the context of relevant text. If you want to tweak the text on some of your high-authority links, go for it, but I wouldn’t break out the spreadsheets in 2013.
1B. Diversify Your Links
Are guest posts the one true answer to all of life’s questions or are they a scourge on our fragile earth? To read the SEO blogosphere in 2012, it’s hard to tell. Any link-building tactic can be low quality, if you abuse it. The problem is that someone reads a tip about how guest posts make good links and then they run off and publish the same slapped-together junk on 15,000 sites. Then they wonder why their rankings dropped.
Nothing screams manual link-building like a profile that’s built with only one tactic, especially if that tactic is too easy. At best, you’re eventually going to be doomed to diminishing returns. So, take a hard look at where your links came from in 2012 and consider trying something new next year. Diversify your profile, and you’ll diversify your risk.
1C. Diversify Traffic Sources
There’s an 800-lb. Gorilla in the room, and we’re all writing more SEO blog posts to avoid talking about it. Most of us are far too dependent on Google for traffic. What would you do if something changed overnight? I know some of you will object – “But ALL my tactics are white-hat and I follow the rules!” Assuming that you understood the rules 100% accurately and really followed them to the letter, what if they changed?
The more I follow the Algorithm, the more I realize that the changing search UI and feature landscape may be even more important than the core algorithm itself. What happens if your competitor suddenly gets site-links, or you’re #8 on a SERP that drops to only 7 results, or everyone gets video snippets and you have no videos, or your niche shifts to paid inclusion and you can’t afford to pay? Even if you’ve followed the rules, your traffic could drop on a moment’s notice.
You need to think beyond Google. I know it’s tough, and it’s going to take time and money, but if you’re dependent on Google for your livelihood, then your livelihood is at serious risk.
1D. Diversify Your Marketing
There’s been a very positive trend this year toward thinking about marketing much more broadly – not as a tactic to trick people into liking you, but as the natural extension of building a better mousetrap. I think this is at the heart of RCS (not to put words in Wil’s mouth) – if you do something amazing and you believe in it, everything you do is marketing. If you build crap and you know it’s crap, then marketing is sleight of hand that you hope to pull on the unsuspecting. You might score twenty bucks by stealing my wallet, but you’re not going to gain a customer for life.
Stop taking shortcuts and make a real resolution in 2013 to think hard about what you do and why it has value. If you understand your value proposition, content and marketing naturally flow out of that. Talk to people outside of the SEO and marketing teams. Find out what your company does that’s unique, exciting, and resonates with customers.
1E. Diversify Your Point Of View
I recently had the pleasure to finally see Michael Dorausch (a chiropractor and well-known figure in the local SEO community) speak. Dr. Mike arrived in Tampa for BlueGlassX and built his presentation from the ground up, using photography to tell stories about the neighborhood and local history. It's hard to explain in a few sentences, but what amazed me was just how many ideas for unique and original content he was able to find in less than 48 hours, just by having a fresh perspective and passion for the subject. I'd like to say I was inspired by the presentation, but to be totally honest, I think the emotion was embarrassment. I was embarrassed that he was able to generate so many ideas so quickly, just by coming at the problem with the right attitude.
In 2013, if you tell me your industry is "boring," be warned - I'm going to smack you. If you're bored by what you do, how do you think your prospects and customers will feel? Step out - have someone give you a tour of your office like you've never been there. Visit your home city like you're a tourist coming there for the first time. Get five regular people to walk through your website and try to buy something (if you don't have five normal friends, use a service like UserTesting.com). The New Year is the perfect time for a fresh perspective.
1F. Happy Birthday, Erica!
Ok, this has nothing to do with the post, but today is Erica McGillivray's birthday. If you don't know Erica, she's our Community Attaché here at SEOmoz. So, diversify your communications today and wish her a happy birthday.
I love this. So all summed up your one tip is to, you know, be a marketer. One focused on the long-term, not on unsustainable short-cuts. One focused on building a brand for the future, not on building rank for a temporary period.
Love the shout-out to Erica, too. Happy birthday, E! :)
Thanks, Jon! :)
I always follow the rule “Don’t put all eggs in one basket especially Google’s basket”. Google will keep improving its algorithm to hit crap hat SEO and do collateral damage with legitimate sites as well. So I continuously find new market places, Niche forms, Blogs Shopping Search Engines to get referral traffic. This will help me to cut short the reliance on Google and guess what when we hit by algo update, we still got reasonable traffic and sales to stay in market.
Just keep in mind “make your self real” instead of “try to be a real”. Don’t overdo SEO,Think like a Marketer and spend time in RCS to generate business not only from Internet but also from offline means.
Nice Post As usual
"Happy Birthday Erica" May you Live Long Life
Thanks, Asif. Currently, planning on living to be 116. =D
You are 16 right now and there are 100 more years to go :)
More like almost 16x2... but thanks for the compliment. :)
Happy birthday :)
Thank you!
Hey Asif - you sound like me! I actually wrote a post titled something about "All Your Eggs in One SEO Basket" back in July. I always preach "don't just look natural, BE natural", too. I hate to link drop, but it is relevant (in case anyone gives a crap about what I think): https://kercommunications.com/seo/eggs-in-one-basket/
It’s a Simple Logic, I always prepare Plan B and often C,D, E.
Well said Aisf, I completely agree with you .. don't rely just on GOOGLE :)
Very Nice lines Asif. “make your self real” instead of “try to be a real”. Trying hard to make thing natural actually makes them unnatural.
First of all Erica Belated Happy b'day. Well said Ashif i agree with your point of view. Suppose if you take rest for a day from office. Next day when you come to office and you will check your emails you will find lots of spamming mails are available in your inbox and can easily observe which is spam and you will never check any single spammy mail. And finally you will select all spam mails and delete of them. just think about that if you can easily observe them then why not search engines. So be real don't go with any unnatural ways.
Thank you!
completely agree with you
The best SEO strategy in 2013 is not to rely in Google - full stop.
The best internet marketing strategy? Well we already rely on Google for PPC, we rely on Google for Adsense, and we might be forced to rely on Google with G+ (which in my opinion will becoming the No.1 social platform in 2013).
I think next year SEOs and "white hats" are going to wake up and realise that Google is going to be controlling the internet and there's no full-proof strategy (on page or off-page) that is guaranteed to work over the next 2-3 years.
Think about it...
Google flicks a switch and prefers a different type of site and it doesn't matter what your strategy is. Even big, authority sites have been hit by EMD and penguin updates. Even if you make a solid business like Groupon you're still no immuned to Google bringing out a new service like Google Offers to destroy your business. I wouldn't exactly call TripAdvisor, Booking.com or Confused.com thin affiliate sites either but they're still highly dependant on SEO and susceptible to what Google does going forward. It's no longer a case of building a quality website to stay in Google's good books anymore it's a case of not relying on Google for SEO, PPC or Adsense full stop.
Even Facebook is being threatened by G+ so the idea you can play in Google's backyward with a straight forward magic set of rules of bullshit. No one can guarantee an SEO or business strategy that will work for the next 2-3 yrs.
Completely agree. The only way to make G+ the premier social media website?
.......put more emphasis on sharing content, interaction and using the platform so it has a part to play in your rankings. (what part it will play we don't know but that's the game!)
Agreed but People don’t understand the importance of RCS. “How business are working before Google even before Internet they Do RCS”. The best part of doing RCS Google will start liking us eventually.
Google is doing some RCS in my opinion and that is why they are the BIG G. I agree with you all the way that Google will become bigger and bigger (if not with existing services then with new ones).
Not depended on Google is hard to imagine i think for most entrepreneurs here. Besides even if Google changes the search algo then Bing and others are still there. The biggest advantage of Google changes is that you need to focus on your costumer for better rankings and not with tricks or cheats and I do believe that this makes Google better.
I agree with much of what you said but I can't feel sorry for Groupon. I'm a little hesitant to agree that the 4 year old company is "solid." Their statistics on businesses that use their services a second time are not impressive at all. This is mostly because companies don't list appropriate products and services and have poor follow up on these customers. Groupon has always been vulnerable. They charge insane prices and use a lot of PPC. It is by no means a unique product that can't be duplicated. It doesn't take Google to make them suffer, but any business that wants a more hands on approach to marketing. Groupon makes the most sense to a business that has no marketing plan or advertising. The businesses that use Groupon are weak and therefore Groupon is weak. I think they've got a matter of time.
I think the AuthorRank is going to be a major contributing factor in the success of G+. People are basically forced to use it if they are hoping to build their AuthorRank.
Although I think it is a smart move by Google, I don't like it that companies have to engage in G+ in order to be successful in content marketing.
I agree with you, but given that Google controls so much of the playing field it's not simple to build alternative traffic sources. If you're running a SEO / marketing site you can get a lot of referral traffic from other sites and social media but for most other industries that doesn't happen. The best strategy is to build a subscriber database - although of course you need Google in the first place to do that. But once you've got good numbers it's a useful hedge against future algo changes.
It can be oh so overwhelming. I will be glad if Google likes natural as that is what I do best! All the rest is so much more difficult to learn!! I usually feel like I'm running backwards with all this SEO Thanks for the encouragement!
and
HAPPY BIRTHDAY Erica!
Thanks! :)
To Start, Erica, have a very happy Birthday! Dr. Pete did something that will fill your inbox with wishes from the fans of content that SEOmoz produce on daily basis! J
Diversity is important as it usually does not follow any specific pattern and looks natural... exactly what Google is looking for!
So, the tip here is to think long term.. Think inbound...and stop thinking about shortcuts to attain success.
Good Read!
Yes, Dr. Pete is the best! :)
Thanks for the birthday wishes.
Great post. What I take from it is "Stop taking shortcuts". That sums it up.
HBD Erica!!!
Stop taking shortcuts and relevant content.
Thank you! :D
:) Hope you had a great day!
Great one Tip for 2013 SEO , I would say 5 into 1 Tip but the Best. Thanks
Love the message. Also don't forget about Bing Webmaster Tools.
Indeed!
Just write content for human consumption.
Consistency is the key.
More content, bigger footprint - natural rankings.
Thanks for such a concise lunch-time post!
We've been saying to our clients for ages about ensuring their marketing/advertising/lead generation is not based on one method alone. SEO/Search should definitely be part of the mix, but no 'eggs in one basket' syndrome, definitely not.
Here's to a more natural 2013 :D
P.S. Happy Birthday Erica :-)
Thanks, Martin! :)
Hope you had a great day :-) You can gear up for Christmas now! Two parties in two weeks, must be hard! :D
I couldn't agree more Dr. Pete...with all the changes Google has made over the last 10 months (including the "refresh" about 10 days ago), diversification is the key to not only surviving, but thriving!
Perfect Post. in addition to Diversify your anchor Text the one and only change google will bring to its Spam filtering is to finding the correlation between the words by comparing it to the history of that words from the pas history. For example the Ngram viewer for books show how the certain words has been replaced with the other by showing the trends. refer to this post of searchengineland by Gary Price... https://searchengineland.com/google-ngram-viewer-2-0-now-online-137079 Rest I bookmarked the post for the inspirational future activities :D
Thanks.
Let me first say:
<3s to all of you!
And then to Dr. Pete:
You're the best. Thanks for the birthday wishes and filling my inbox with birthday love. If you were here, I'd try to convince you to come see The Hobbit at midnight. =D
Can't say anything else Dr. Pete! You said it all! :) Thanks for this list of things to brainstorm for 2013.
Most of all, Happy Birthday Erica!!
Thanks for the birthday wishes. It was a great birthday.
Great article Pete,
I agree with this article, placing all the eggs in one basket is not safe at all. However for now Google is still the power house for leads in my industry. We do get some calls from other sources but nothing compared to Google.
I completely agree with marketing needing to be more diverse because anything can happen... I do feel that many business are basing all their leads on Google and they will all have to change/adapt when the time comes.
As far as diversity for ranking, having one educational link (.edu) that actually helps a school will have a much better impact then links from gust bloging sites with little credibility. Perhaps for Google its not only what you do but what you can teach.
I think as marketers we need to stay on top of the latest news/technology and test any source (online/offline) we can find that is relevant to see if it helps.
Erica, Happy belated birthday! Hope it was a great one. :)
Dr. Pete, excellent post! I especially agree with 1C. Even if you follow all of today's rules, how do you know tomorrow's rules will be the same? You don't want to get lulled into a false sense of security just because your work is always white hat. It's another good reason to keep your strategy diversified. Think like the Coast Guard - semper paratus!
I think this is one great tip. You never know what could happen next with the search engines so you need to diversify. Will keep in mind this great tip.
"Wishing you a Very Happy Belated Birthday Erica" May you Live Long Life..!! God Bless you...!!!
Thanks! :D
I like 1D where Dr. Pete talks about when you do something amazing and you believe in it, everything you do is marketing and 1E where he talks about if you feel bored by your industry, and so will your customers. I think the message for 2013 is to stop obsessing over the technicalities and find your passion!
I think that you are all overreacting a bit. I think that Google is improving for the better and like mentioned previously, there has been some collateral damage, but they are a very small exception to the rule.
I must admit some of my websites have been heavily penalised but looking at them now, rightfully so. I treat all of this like a big kick up the backside. We must provide as munch value as possible to our visitors, both through our website and external sources. Keep this is mind and I think we shouldn't go too far wrong.
There are a lot of people out there that are wining. You broke the rules, you gamed the system, you paid the price, simple.
Hello,
Offcourse "Dont put all eggs in one basket". Day by day Google becomes tough so i think Google itself says choose another place for marketing your business, so why not we go for other place. It's absolutely true that 80% business is on Google but it is also 100% true that in future the business by Google will decrease. I see there is only 2 options :
1. Choose another place than Google for marketing2. Go as per the changing rules of Google
Have one blog relative to this topic : SEO Never Expire But Become Tough in 2013
Thanks
Nice article heading - may have to steal that when I think of something as interesting as this!! But seriously, great advice that most companies and especially internet marketing companies should of taken notice of a long time ago. The internet and social media is constantly evolving and therefore you should never take any platform, link building process or strategy for granted.
Well Happy Birthday Erica wish you a happy and prosperous life. This is what i was doing for last two years and that's the main reason i never hurt by Google animals. Yeah that's true Diversity keep you save and it will also help and protect if you are doing any gray hat technique. Nice one sir.
Thank you!!
Two words: Hell. Yes. :-)
If anyone reads this and thinks "tell me something I don't know": good - you're on the right track. But even eight months after Penguin 1 (aka 1.0) in April, I've still seen people not diversify enough. My biggest related facepalm was someone who said "hey, let's diversify our anchor text... using blog commenting!" In particular, they wanted the anchor text as "click here" (worse than a keyword IMO - it was painful). Sure, you've automated anchor text (1A) but not - in this instance - the types of links (1B).
That said, I tend to lean on guest blogging a lot, mainly because I think a) it has a lot of other benefits, and b) I've seen a direct result in terms of SEO. So even though I've been doing 1A way before April (since 2009-10, when I first got into SEO and link building), it's good to get a reminder that leaning on one strategy - however good and white-hat it might be right now - may not be the case months/years later. Especially as the grey/black-hats get their mitts on a tactic.
Don't just diversify anchor text. Diversify all the things!
First off... Happy Birthday Erica!!
The best tip is not to rely on a single Search Engine (Google) to be your silver bullet. Make the site user friendly, conversion focused and crawl spider friendly!
Thank you!! :)
I couldn't agree more, Pete. Diversify is definitely the the key, going forward (actually, for those that were paying attention, it has been since at least early 2011).
I need to get a a T-shirt made, that says "Be diverse, not perverse"
Happy Birthday, Erica! Enjoy the Hobbit!
Thanks! :) The Hobbit was great.
I guess the Greeks were right - everything in moderation and nothing in excess. Diversify sums it up well. I've been trying to do that more w/ my anchor text and links from more sites. Thx for opening my eyes up further on how to do this. Being too dependent on any 1 lead source can be a recipe for disaster.
Hi Debbie, I know it is not time for have fun, when i read a term like Greeks, I remember a recent funny talk. I heard good talk in BBC about the quote Sorry, I am Greek. I think was about Greek's wish to leave European Union or something like it.
Love love LOVE this post. I was just talking with a client about how the industry should really start using the phrase DDM, or "diversified digital marketing", instead of just SEO, since diversifying traffic sources and exploring new markets outside of search engines are proving to be much more valuable techniques. Now I have a wonderfully written post from an expert to back me up. :) Thanks!
I completely agree with this post. Diversifying is key to seo success.
This is great regarding Google Panda and Penguin. Now Google wants to see diversify in all things back links, content etc. Google is looking for quality and trying to provide the best results to his customers/visitors. Noe only exact anchors and keyword stuff content will not work more.I think brand name and logo design should be unique so that people can remember you easily.

One Tip to rule them all, One Tip to find them,One Tip to bring them all and in the darkness bind them.
Great post as always Dr. Pete. My mother always told me that variety is the spice of life.
It was great experience to read this post along with some new seo techniques
Long time follower (ok a few months), first time poster. In fact, I finally completed my profile today. Great advice. Looking forward to many many more great posts from the pros!
Great Post .. belated happy birthday Erica McGillivray
It was awesome! :D
Have you been talking to my financial advisor?
Excellent advice. And interesting too, cause I often pair this with the seemingly inconsistent advice that small business business owners concentrate on an area of specialization. Diversify your SEO efforts. Narrow your business scope.
I want to add one more. Diversify your viral paths.
Retain your customers. Just don't let them allow to go away from you by providing them excellent services. Each and every customer will be your viral path. No one can stop traffic coming through that way (who knows when search engines).
Go viral on social media channels by presentation, video, blog posts etc. Don't choose one of them because we know about recent comment on infographics.
And A very happy Birthday to Erica! Cheers....
Thank you! *cheers*
Very good posting. It's going to be interesting to see the extent that Google will make using Google+ a "must" in order for you to have top rankings. After all, it's lagging behind at the moment.
"How do you make people sit up, take notice and actually use Google+?" - well, that's easy - make your life depend on it or I should say make your Google rankings dependent on it!
Just makes sense that the G Monster will go down this route (to them anyhow!)
That's a huge risk for Google to take. People don't want to feel forced into anything. Most of the user base here loves G+ but the truth is the average web user isn't a good fit....yet.
How much more will mobile play a part in SEO in 2013?
Google is feeling the heat.... just few days back it was lagging behind the facebook. This is a clear indicator, that it has to play the dirty business game, no matter how risky it is!
Oops, I missed something. Happy birthday Erica! :)
:) Thanks
I really can't see Google risking the farm on trying to force people to use Google+ by making their rankings dependent on it. For a start, it wouldn't lead to better search results for its users.
I think Google will settle for using AuthorRank as one factor among very many.
Many Many Happy Returns Of The Day---Happy Birthday, Erica!
Thank you! :D
Really very helpful and I think I should treat my site as new one and will not get bored. Curious about Dr. Mike arrived show, sounds very interesting.
#1 Happy Birthday Erica!
Wonderful post and I agree that "Diversification" is one of the most important things to do heading into 2013. In fact one should have started already with so many Panda, Penguin and EMD updates all hinting at Google's move towards quality (often erratic and needing to be patched up ... that in my view is a quality issue in itself but then given the scale of Google and its algorithm maybe these are small fixes in their eventual goal.)
UI changes are certainly a huge factor and things to watch, but then so is everything else as its all coming down to a delicate balance where analysts and experts are watching (and being vocal about) even the most minor modifications.
I believe all calls for now to not rely on Google are more a temporary sentiment than a full blown commitment. After all it is still the biggest search/knowledge engine around.
It is a huge call to think beyond Google as it is still one of the best sources of Free/Organic traffic, but its 100% required as putting all the eggs in one basket is not advised at all (especially since do no evil seems to be morphing into it ain't evil till I say so.)
Thank you! :)
Maybe it is a deep reference, but I feel there was a missed opportunity on a GZA meme from a Dave Chappelle skit (Wu-Tang Financial). "You needa diversify yo bonds." Lol
I digress. This is a great post Dr Pete about exactly where I think the industry is headed. The ability to diversify aspects of your online presence and sustain a business without fully relying on Google is going to be key in a lot of verticals going forward.
The tough issue though is that they really have the monopoly on search traffic and so it can be very tough to obtain this elusive diversity. I enjoyed the point at the end referencing the BlueGlass presentation that I loved, changing the point of view and being enthused and interested in the business is indispensable
SEO, by recent "moves" of Google, is closer to be a bullshit. Is it normal for all of us to change our entire web presentation strategy in order to be "nice viewed" by the allmighty G? 1st we all know but we ignore that Google algorythm are only supposed to filter trash, electronic trash. Nowadays there are billions of web-pages and more than 50% are useless (garbage). Google searches are meant to unsee these garbages. It's a bullshit that Google wants quality, Google wants to make clean in his databases! 2nd it is not and never be normal that a website will decrease in importance only when a modified algorythm take place! Some things must change! Some strong bricks must allways stand over the time! If G is not able to clearify which one are those bricks then it's time for G to disappear! 3rd what was before Google and what will be after Google? Why G gave birth to words used by machines and force us to speak with them? What is a keyword? A website, an affair is determined by a keyword? Why can't I find something humanable with a natural speaking sentence? Why are we forced to think like machines? Because keywords are related to machines not to humans! Finally... I am forced to make SEO on 50 websites every Google update and with some luck 25% of them will remain on positions. What is weird is that a newcomer will always get better and not by his values (to be read quality for Google)... no, only because a new trick was found...
I know a solution for no-SEO but are there humans reading my post??? ;)
Great Tips. Simple and useful. Looks like a spam comment, but it's true.
Ah, happy birthday Erika!
Thank you! :)
Happy Birthday, Erica!
Diversification in every strategy is a must. Thanks Dr. Pete! That's a great article with five strategies, though your title says one.
Thank you!!
Great post Dr. Pete, thanks for putting it together!
The most used analogy we give to our clients is the advice you would normally hear from an investment counselor: diversify your portfolio. All of our education in terms of online marketing revolves around that concept. Do not put your eggs in one basket, it's applicable across so many different topics.
Great to see someone back this all up.
Cheers!
Kyle
Great Article and Great suggestions. I will be recommending this article. Thank you!!
Great post, 2013 will be very interesting. Got a kick out of the image in the post. Even though it is candy, using food parallels to explain SEO is one of my favorites. Fresh and organic beats processed and reused content.
Happy belated B-Day Erica :)
Thank you! :D
I really appreciate your recommendation to diversify traffic sources. This is so important, and really always has been. I hate to see good businesses and good people go down because of the whims of Google. There are too many heartbreaking stories out there. :(
+Eleventy Billion for you comment about Mike Dorausch's Blueglass preso. It was the most unique, actionable preso I've seen in our industry in several years.
Saw Mike do a similar preso at SMX Advanced back in June. The wheels are still spinning :)
Happy Birthday Erica. Hope it is a fun filled one.
Top tip is diversity tactics for 2013.
Should we have not been following this for like, forever anyway?
Still, we all need to be told again and again, so thanks for the reminder.
I just reviewed a friends website with a EMD and 1000 links built twice, once in August and once in October. This year. Guess where he ranks for his keywords?
He was very sad when I explained the reasons. He shouldn't have gone for the cheap SEO option.
Thanks, Gareth. I'm actually going to a midnight showing of the Hobbit. :)
wish you many many happy returns of the day , your major dream should be full fill in this year , happy birth day to you Miss Erica .
matt (seobyindia)
Great post Dr. Pete! Exception to this rule "So, how can you protect what you’ve built in 2013?" ;-)
I spotted that too ;)
Excellent Post as always Pete. Thanks for the info.
Thank you for this post. Very Useful.
I think this article give me more knowledge about SEO, especially after Google release Panda and Penguin.
I know you were a good writer but just for suggestion why don't you give title 1F. Diversify Your Communications instead 1F. Happy Birthday, Erica! and later congratulated Erica for the example of Diversify Your Communications.
I wonder if Google will say happy birthday to someone when at that time was talking about SEO?
Dear Erica, happy birthday to you. I wish nothing but the best for you, always!
Very Comprehensive description, really liked it. Thanks
Great insights on SEO, thanks for the wonderful article.
Happy Birthday, Erica!
sharath
Nice Intro Title. You got me! I have been reading a lot of these "2013 predictions" to see the underlying themes most preach about. I really like the one about not relying on Google. I still think too many people focus on reverse engineering algos rather than UX. It is good that the gamers will finally be gamed. Viva la revolution!
Truly inspirational. Simple but big words. This article made my day :)
Less is more - succinct with brevity - thanks!
I really like Top SEO Tip 1C. I found a lot of parallels with Rand's WBF about doing SEO on a site outside of your domain. Both are rooted in diversifying to help you out with searching but also referrals for your audience whom may not primarily search.
Love it! Simple, smart, powerful and effective.
Good thoughts!!
Hello all,
I am new here so please forgive me if I post in a wrong manor!
However I wish to hear the opinions of you fine people in order to move forward in life!
I am a humble web designer for a small UK city (everyone's a web designer right!), I have been freelancing for many years and until recently devoted my whole time to only design and code.
I found a big market gap within my home city months ago for local Jobs, I believed I could provide a website based company that could become a valuable asset within the city whereby the jobs are local and career advice is based on relevant local matters and news ect. I will have two local industry career advisors making regular daily and weekly blog postings, with only 2 pagerank 5 links with absolute relevancy point towards the site.
My website is current offline and has not been upload on the internet
The Problem!
I have spent monthsdesigning, developing adding Schema.org - getting social with G+ implementing all the recommended advice (mostly from here) into the site. I purchased a Domain name www.jobs(mycity).com in the hope that it would prove to be of a benefit and most importantly a brand easily recognisable for the locals!. I intend to develop the business offline also and have a radio add that will be going live in January.
But with recent Google updates my fear is that as a high risk EMD even with offline advertising if customers type in jobs and then the City into Google my website will not appear.
The real fear is I will be nowhere to be seen and loose my offline credibility as I dont appear in the results due to Google's recent updates which will cost me £housands in offline advertising.
Question?
Should I rename the website and social media profiles to a non EMD before I go live with the radio add in January? ( while waiting another 10 days to re list the business on G Maps as I do have a brick and mortar office for both job hunters and employers.
Or is there evidence to show that being content relevant and rich will help an EMD website rather than become a negative due to recent updates?
I really cant find a clear answer, and maybe there is not one. However just hearing what the majority of thoughts are may help to make the right decision.
All advice is very much appreciated
auto thumbs up just for saying happy birthday?
Diversity definitely is going to be the way to go; probably with an emphasis on video. With the complexities involved a degree of analysis and project management is likely to be fruitful.
There's an old rule:don't put all the eggs in the same basket. I agree with you; not so long ago Altavista was the summum and today Goole seems to be forever and ever the best of the best. What would happen if suddenly, everything changed? Diversity = profiency
Very interesting article, I agree with you about these things. I think that if we want to improve our SEO values of sites in 2013, we will have to write high-quality content. I think that especially authorship and mobile friendly design will become important for SEO in 2013. What do you think? I also wrote down some of my thoughts about SEO in 2013 in this article. https://webmaster-land.com/seo-in-2013-what-do-we-expect/
As I mentioned earlier that there is no SEO in new SEO then what needs to be done? We need to think user prospective and develop the killer content and market them as we can.
Today I was just sitting with my SMO guy and asked him what you do on Face book. He just told me please post any link on your Facebook account and I posted. He told me now re-post the same link with title I re-posted. He asked which one is look like batter; obviously that was my 2nd post. And again he told me now you should post this link with title and image. And I certainly that was very impressive.
I apprehend that presentation was important for user attraction. Getting ranked on Google or any other search engine is fine but there is other way that could be effective for traffic and eventually for our business once we build our trust on it. And our chances have been increases to get one way links for our articles from different resources which will help to get ranking as per search engines algorithm.
Find the diversify platform to promote your content by different marketing toll including SN platform
Happy Birthday Erica
Thanks for such a nice information Dr. Pete. I really loved your
Diversify thing.
Many Thanks.
1G. Happy Birthday Erica :)
I love this, especially the words "In 2013, if you tell me your industry is "boring," be warned - I'm going to smack you." lol, and "If you're bored by what you do, how do you think your prospects and customers will feel? " DIVERSIFY YOUR POINT OF VIEW!!!
Good point... and well divided into many points :)
Thanks Dr. Pete
You always gave nice information.
Thanks You So Much...
Diversify, diversify, diversify! I absolutely love how this points out the importance of adding QUALITY and DIVERSITY to a website's SEO techniques. As with anything, diversity is great!
Thanks for the read, and I certainly agree with the points listed above.

In my opinion best tip is just write awesome content, stop SEO!
Hi, with the latest changes of Google I simply think trying to fake the system is impossible. SEO is dead, just focus on writing cool and awesome content!

Funny how this whole SEO thing is starting to come full circle back to marketing, this is a good happening. Trick-like tactics are going away and those who take the time to stop and think about their audience and create something actually useful will be rewarded. I think were finally headed in the right direction.
Thanks!
I know this was posted back in December but it's really good, and of course, still very applicable. I wonder how many people took it to heart and are diversifying their tactics, marketing, traffic sources, etc. It's so often important to remember not to put all your eggs in one basket.
I think this is very informative post, i never know about diversify. It is really a new idea and i will implement for my SEO job.
Great Post. I have a query that if there are 50 links pointing to my website with the same anchor text and i feel that can be the reason that I am hit by Penguin 2.0. Will it work if I delete the page itself?
Dr.Pete
now days diversify really matters. You never know what will happen after next update of Google. I just know one thing that traditional SEO Practice has gone and its time to Dynamic SEO (dynamic means diversify practice in seo). Great job Pete Sir...
Hi Glenn! Yes indeed. Tracking our SEO timeline is critically very important. Algorithms like Penguin and Panda can actually cause severe damage to our business, as Google organic traffic can decrease rapidly overnight.
Thanks for this nice article sharing with us. I believe content marketing will be the main focus for a lot of professional SEO-ers this year...
Nice post. Well its too old but its informative.
Nice post Peter J Meyer. I always agree on diversification of links. Here you explain it beautifully.
Thanks for this helpful Post.
I think, SEO in 2014 is being a bit different as Google is making it more and more complex by implementing new tactics in its search algorithms.
But, the good thing is that for quality sites, it is becoming easy to get in top rankings as sites with black hat SEO are already penalized by Google. So, concentrating on new and fresh content along with making it interesting and valuable for the readers is the only best practice for better SEO in 2014.
I noticed this impact on one of my online education blogs, that their unique and quality articles are really playing well in SERP.
[link removed]
Hello Dr. Peter! I really think that we really need to diversify our links. I believe that any link-building tactic can become low quality if we will abuse it.
As part of your internet strategy, it is always good to build a ‘good reputation’ in the web space. This is a big component in your SEO strategy, and the following items listed in this blog are good to start with. And SEO is not only driven of what is within the internet space, but also external activities that would drive people to your website.
Great post very informative and happy birthday Erica
Back linking is hard work there are many site or programs that can help you, But they al give different information so you don't know what to believe unless you pay for the product. My site snelwerkvinden is my first page and I learning everyday about don't and do's
Thanks
Good Work Dr. Pete I Like it keep it up looking forward to learn more from you.
Great article! I completely agree that diversity is key in SEO. Especially in regards to anchor text and link building. I learned it's important to actually be real, rather than attempt to appear real. Google wants to see quality. Exact match anchor text and keyword stuffing doesn't work anymore.
Oh, and happy belated birthday Erica!
Even after long time I am here with MOZ experts but always I try to avoid their compatible suggestions . Nice to meet you everyone ! this is the first time I dare to write something on this worthwhile post. actually Erica's birthday inspire me to write something .. Hello Erica ! Happy birthday to you and a great thanks to Dr. Pete really such a nice share .
Hello,
All though I feel it’s a good move on Google side to update, I also feel abandoned at the same time.
I have spent countless hours building sites to Google’s old “rules” I am now having to build to a new set of rules. I run a site that sells bicycle components and up to two months ago the site has been doing good in search results. I noticed that mid-January however this site almost dropped completely from Google’s listing. Doing a search on Argon 18 E118 we were always on the first page. Now we can’t even find the link. Our site is cyclistspot.com. I think my only downfall at this point is original content. Being that we do resale of bicycle components, we get our product descriptions from the manufacture, us and every other bicycle sales site. I am thinking that if we start changing our content to be more about product review this might help. Any thoughts?
Great Article and Great suggestions. I will be recommending this article. Thank you!!
I bookmarked the post for the inspirational future activities :D
I got link from Google and seems Google rightly mentioned them.
Truly great service, much appreciated.
definitely, all of the top 1 tips are perfectly right for seo.. the best thing to do nowadays is to diversify.. only thing that needs to be elaborated is diversifying your market. i would love to read specifically about diversifying markets!
1C. Diversify Traffic Source.
I'm a complete newbie. I have some understanding of SEO, but only enough to fill a postage stamp. I actually watched a few videos by Matt Cutts who openly says that we should worry about trying to optimize pages.
Any feedback on the following would be gratefully received:
I started https://meebal.com - it's a news site allowing me and contributors to write the news as we see it and give our open and honest opinions on it.
I haven't done anything, that I am aware of, apart from opening a Webmaster Tools Account and submitting my sitemap, in terms of really trying to optimize the pages that I or others write.
I've gone, in just two months, from zero traffic to 150 visitors a day and about 30% of that is from Google. Is this a good result or am I so far off track it's unreal?
I'm just trying to make my marketing as diverse as possible by sharing what I write throughout my social networks.
Graham
Hello SEO mozians! Webmaster finally reconsider my site and reply as : "Reconsideration request forhttps://www.dealaboo.com/: No manual spam actions found but there might be many other issues due to which your site is not performing well".
Now I feel relax after knowing that dealaboo.com is not affected with any update. Now I can make strategies and plans to get better in SERP's, any advice or help after visiting my site is highly appreciable. Thanks.
Great article! I completely agree with you i all the points, especially in regards to anchor text and link building. Exact match anchor text and keyword stuffing doesn't work anymore. Thanks for informative post.
I honestly like this article because it enlightened me on how to be natural as a SEO. It helped me a lot on my next move. Though I have been using strictly white hat seo, this could add to my additional knowledge of being a professional seo.
Thanks!
These days web site business is a very popular but to have you web page rank up you need good SEO policy, good news for every one who are want to know about SEO and make there web site number one on there related search. I get a company which SeoDataService.com has a great deal of offers of SEO. I take a service and get one of my site a great visitor. See SeoDataService.com what you get your self.
Knew I was going to love this article from the moment I saw the first picture - Diversify.
I also always thought that to be the best possible way to go about just anything, not just SEO! Nothing can top that! Anyone doing just one or two things to improve their SEO will fail eventually. Maybe it's working now but the market and Search Engines' are always changing and if you rely just on a couple of factors you won't last for a long time.
It's frankly the best longlasting tip you could give to anyone, thanks for pointing it out ;)
happy b's day Erica!
Seo in 2013 is really changing a lot. Many got kicked away already. As a specialist in Tampa SEO Company i really get worried about new updates, since offpage seo is not enough to bring the results until the site owner themselves now that they should start taking action about their site worth and engage designers and developers to make it seo friendly. Thanks your post make a difference and i quite agree with your ideas
Great post, being unique is the way forward. I am very happy to see that you critique Google and that looking for a long-term viable solutions must not depend on any single company.
I know, its late to wish you Happy Birthday. Now come to the point. My question is how I use diversity keywords for my site? Suppose someone is doing SEO in logo design project so how can he use logo design diversity keywords for his sites? I totally agree with your tips but I am very confused on this?
I will take birthday wishes even late. ;) Thanks!
Thanks a lot Pete. I've bookmarked this page! Very useful seo tips for 2013 :)
Great SEO stuff to follow in 2013. Diversification is one of the key factors in search engine optimization trends to build all possible links which may result in great success.
In one (diversified) tip, the Doctor really summed up the way algo's are moving and how to adjust SEO tactics to thrive in the ever-evolving search engine world. Thanks, Doc!
Nice write up...all the tips under one main tip "Diversify"... good concept and good presentation
Its very nice post Dr. Pete!!
@ Andzz Well G+ gonna be the next year's hit
Thanks for sharing such insightful information with us. I also agree that one must diversify links for better results..
Keep Sharing
The post and strategies are brilliant. Loved No 1D most. Used to with the others.
Thanks
Oh! happy birthday Erica.
Great SEO tips for 2013.Thanks Pete
Diversity of Anchor Text and Diversity of Links - This cannot be preached enough
Thank you Pete for sharing these valuables.
Dear Asif Dilshad
We cannot look down upon the policies and strict algo changes by Google God. They are really facing competition and are in real trouble. Dr. Pete is right. There must be good quality changes in the program as there are plenty of spammer than the pure. You are also right in your way in getting traffic and business deals with referral ways. Everybody is supposed to find alternates and it can not be seen as play or struggle for existence.
Yesterday I heard some quote made by my boss to one of our younger programmer who depends Google for completing his each and every modules. Boss said " What will you do if one day Google is closed"
once again Thanks Pete
Good tips for me !
Thanks Pete
Thanks Pete ;).
Tks god I have the degree in Marketing :P
Everything is pointing to a marketing aproach for SEO, PPC and Analytics. Data mining will soon rule the digital marketing world.
It still comes as a surprise when I find businesses who don't have a mailing list. Surely the best traffic you can get to your site are those qualified visitors who have already converted in the past.
You've got to have something worth coming back too though, new offers or up to date news/views/blog etc...
Of course, you've already done your keyword and competitive research so you know exactly who your customers are and how to talk to them!
Nice blog!! And its def. true that diversification is very important to have different flavors!
Yeah. RIght on Dr. Pete. Everyone (I think) secretly knows that way too much of their traffic is coming from Google. What's interesting is that Google, because of recent changes, is really encouraging SEOs to help their clients find more search volume outside of Google. It will be an interesting day when we all start succeeding at that, won't it?
Dr. Pete, great stuff. I agree with you for the most part. Not depending it all on Google is of course a good tactic but I think you might want to emphasize here that people do not need to forget about Google. Otherwise people might think Google is no longer the biggest factor for success at this moment. What 2013 is going to bring us (all depands on 21-12-2012...) no one knows exactly indeed.
The New Year is the perfect time for a fresh perspective. => I Totally agree. I'm going to redesign my business strategies and rethink a lot of things but Google is still in them.
I agree with you that diversity is key. In all aspects and Google should not be alone but fact is that Google is the biggest provider for visitors. We only rely on Google and Bing (Netherlands) and of course refering traffic but if you take Google out of the equation that means a drop of about 80% I believe.
just my 2 cents on this.
Keep up the writing.
regards
Jarno
Let's separate out Google, though, because I think we have the habit of ending up in the mindset of seeing it as Google vs. Bing. Obviously, chasing Google makes more sense than chasing Bing, by pure numbers, but that's looking at SEO/SEM as the entire world of marketing.
Let's pretend that all of your business came from ads in one magazine, or a referral relationship with just one other business. That would be an incredibly precarious situation, and that's exactly what many, many online businesses are doing with Google. It's not really about Google - they're a perfectly valid piece of the puzzle. It's about putting your entire future in the hands of something you have no control over.
I would agree with this. Bing and Yahoo brings 3 times the conversion rate then Google on my Ecommerce site.
Yahoo in the Netherlands is almost none existent:
only 592 visitors from Yahoo on a total of almost 500.000 for one of the most popular sites. That is about 0,001%. Bing does okay though.
About conversions on e commerce I can't reply. Don't have that for any of my sites (I don't run e commerce sites for myself. ).
I see that Bing brings in less traffic but MORE conversions on many of my client's site too!
Dr. Pete,
I understand what you are saying and I do agree. Never put all of it on one horse or red or black but spread your changes out some more.
The control part is very fitting because I tend to look more and more into other ways of earning money (not only adsenses any more) and for my clients as well.
thanks for the explanation and reply.
Regards
Jarno
Superb write up of tips Dr Pete! i couldnt agree more that exact match domains are dwinddling as is exact match anchor text. I dont think the "gorilla" cares about anchor text more about the content and quality of the page you are linking too... I also forsee that google won't punish you for linking to bad places or places worth nothing much unless you do it thousands of times.
Diversify = Natural ... Natural = Good
Good point, and very valid. A good SEO should know to bend the best practices in favor of diversity and natural appearance. That's the only way to build a solid foundation going forward, otherwise you'll be up all night wondering if Rome will be burning the next morning.
Thanks Dr. Pete,
I love this kind of post because it reiterates the simple fact that to get results you need to have a great site. Stop thinking like an SEO and think about being a Marketer. Make your site and all its pieces valuable and you'll get the results,
Cheers,
Michael
Addition: Onsite authored content and diversity of authors will be a big thing in 2013...
Great blog post Dr. Pete. I agree that diversity is important for sustainability purposes. I would also like to add that optimization should be done for people (rather than solely for SEs).
Over the past 10 years, we seem to have been so focused on 'beating' Google, we've missed the fact that all that's needed is to be natural. Deliver quality and you'll get quality in return. It's difficult to believe people get SEO so wrong!
Nice post. Diversification is a great way of lowering risk for lots of areas including marketing and monetary investment. This is a good reminder for marketers to keep a balanced approach.
Happy B-Day Erica! ;)
Catchy title ;)
Great post Dr. Pete! Don't put all your SEO eggs in one keyword, link or tactic basket.
I would say each SEO activity must be content-oriented and must create value for the people. I also put almost similar points in my blog a few days back: https://naumanlodhi.blogspot.com/2012/12/in-seo-go-to-war-with-different-weapons.html
The title of the post alone, is a great example of effective marketing. I may not have read it if it was another top 10 list. The content is great as well, but I'm gonna have to steal this idea for a title. :)
The problem with titles like this is that you can only get away with it once :) I'll have to find another trick next time.
Just about to start a fresh career in Internet Marketing and digital marketing. I think i have to think beyond Google. Would like to bookmark this article so i can keep important words in mind such as Diversify.
easy to understand article but hard to implement. Let's see how much i can apply in 2013
Arguably the best article I've read on here, so well done.
Not drawn-out and pointlessly over-complicated like many of the posts on SEOMoz, just concise and to the point, how it should be.
Give yourself a pat on the back, Dr. Pete.
thanks for this article. this is nice tips. you covered the most point of this. I agree your all point.
i see what you did
first of all .......a very very happy birthday dear erica.....sry for late but i found this blog right now and ofcourse these amazing tips provided by dr. pete forced me to write the big thanks to him..Really awesome tips are given here.
Thanks!
I all so thanks him
Coming from a newbie in this area, I would recommend keeping your head a bit "SEO-naive". The more you think about how to counter Google, the more you are drawn to fall into the trap. Just look at the site you would like to have your links at. Custom-fit it to the "host site" because what they do is for their users. Obsessing about your own strategy defeats your purpose.
I totally agree with you. Anchor text diversifying is one of the best recipes against Penguin IMHO
A great read Dr. Pete. Many thanks.
All our SEO/SEM, Content Marketing, Social Media strategies need to be Decisive, Intelligent, Viral, Engaging, Responsive, Social, Inbound and Fanatic to yield returns on Y-axis of the graph.
About anchor text and backlinks source diversity, i agree that what you should do for big and expensive websites, but for small ones webmaster probably has neither time or money to work on such quality SEO.
The thing is I've been carrying out online PR activity on such sites as PRWeb because their domain ranks are so high and last month in OSE I could see my PrWeb 98 link in the link listings but now it has disappeared?? This is my highest ranking link and now it doesn't show in OSE why is this? I presume if I check in Google Webmaster Tools it will still be there so why not in OSE?
Fantastic review!
Thanks for taking the time to write this up Dr.Pete.You have put huge information in this single blog.I am surfing for something like this.Keep it up in future too.
Great information and very well explained. Voted Up
Great article, I like it and wrote something similar to it about 3 months ago, it's almost the same really, accept I go into platform and ip diversity as well.
Have a great night.

I love how as a discipline matures, the top tips become simpler and shorter! Compare this to perhaps the top 100 tips for SEO from 5 years ago and its great to see how SEO has matured even though there is still so much more we can do!
And I completely agree that you can SEO almost any industry, by thinking like your customer and taking a different perspective. One that isn't an SEO's perspective!!
This post is so simple, yet so effective. Nice work Dr. Pete! (FWIW I completely agree, Google is going to crack down on anyone that doesn't follow this advice but instead have an unnatural link profile)
"Great info to have"
These tips are dead on and a great way to think about it. I think the whole world of SEO has never been more interesting or challenging in a really great way. I love the fact that diversifying requires creative thinking and problem solving skills.
Thanks for the great tips!
Nice tips!!!Thanks for sharing these to hold SEO position on 2013.
The best SEO tips for 2013! Thank you!
Couldn't agree more. People too often use a minimal number of sources for their traffic in an attempt to better themselves SEO-wise. Probably not the best idea as far as not getting killed by the Panda goes. You want to be everywhere. Make it so that Google cannot avoid your presence.
Don't be evil and you are pretending that you don't know this , even i am also a new in seo , but never done anything like this , if you want to ask question then you can ask any question by not dropping that link. SeoMoz is great site and it belongs only Gentleman i think there is no space for spammers .
By the way you are always awesome Dr. Pete n Happy Birthday Erica..
Thanks for the birthday wishes.
Great post with good knowledge of marketing . I agree with you that if time or market change then Google change with its Algo and marketing policy. It also one of the company to increase their revenues and visitors. But if you are considering Google for your online marketing or business success then you faces the big truouble in next year as per Jon. Thanks again Jon for awareness for 2013. Start doing SEO with based on other search engine like yahoo, msn or your local search engine
I hope I have a good ranking sites in 2013, I find this article useful, select keywords on my site: discount wedding dresses online my website https://www.vedlys.com/I got a bit confused, how to white hat techniques that his effective link building
I agree.... diversity of anchor text and making it said natural are key. I deal in a somewhat complex niche and really focus on making sure my anchor text varies widely, but also try to make sure it's relevant to the page that it's linking from.
Belated wishes Erica..
I absolutely agree with you because it's tough to manage with all the updates but still there are some scope to the organic link building which i use. I think everything would be back fine for SEO optimizers, marketers and bloggers.
Merry X-Mas and Happy New Year.
Thanks for the awesome post..
Thank you!
Really great article. It's important not to let the your SEO tactics define how you portray yourself and your business. Like another commenter said, 'Be natural'. Of course, don't totally disregard SEO, but be yourself while your doing it. Put your business and your companies mission statement first, and what you have to offer to clients will shine through. One important factor that sometimes overlooked is the power of word of mouth recommendations. If your really what you market yourself as your clients will definitely tell people. Same way I first found Seomoz actually, not through Google but through a friends recommendation. Thanks for the post.
Really like the article 1E diversify your point of view. Great Post.
I don't think I've ever seen a "Top 1 Tip" article before :) Creative headline. I have to agree that diversity will play an integral role in the success of online marketers in 2013. You are spot on Dr. Pete, guest blogging can be effective as long as the process is not abused. I read a lot of Jon Cooper's stuff and he puts a lot of emphasis on relationship building instead of actual link building. I think an SEO could take some of Jon's relationship building tips, combined with your tip to "diversify" their link building process.
Dr Pete this was a great post. I just started learning about SEO. I know that might be funny to a to most people on this site but that ok. This was a great post. It's a lot to remember and learn, I will keep reading and learning. Is it a good Idea to put a site url like pinkintimacy.com [editor's warning: not safe for work] in my comment or is that considerd spam?
On SEOmoz and in many sites it would be considered spam to leave any link, much less this one which is to an adult site and would be embarrassing for many of our readers to show at their workplace. In this case, we've left the comment, but made it so your link was not a live hyperlink and warned our readers about the link in advance.
Ok thanks KeriMorgret. I was reading that leaving links on my comments was a good way to get backlinks. So this is not true? Or just not a good Idea?
You're aiming for relevant links, and a lingerie store isn't very relevant to an SEO blog. This type of commenting in general may get you banned from many sites.
For a good overview about link building, start by reading the section on building links in the Beginner's Guide to SEO at https://www.seomoz.org/beginners-guide-to-seo/growing-popularity-and-links.
You forget the real tip... to simply diversify your career.
Google loves to muddy the waters for obvious reasons. Yet everyone expects to see with clarity what going on. Just don't confuse these articles with "research" they are just ramblings from the confused peanut gallery.
Here's another tip: Save your $1,200 bucks a year and cancel SEOMOZ like I am doing.
So you posted to tell us you're cancelling SEOMoz? Gotta love the electronic age where people can hide behind their computers. Bye!!
You're all missing the point. My advice is not to engage with Google. You're all suckers for it! None of you know what to do or when to do it...why?....because Google doesn't say a word. You all keep coming out with assumptions what you think might help but none of you know. Diversify, don't put eggs in one basket and all that obvious malarkey with none of you coming up with the actual answers. You're making stupid bogs for the sake of making a stupid blog. A great blog is the one with the answer or one that directs to the exact solution. This SEO blog like all others skims and skirts around but the author doesn't know the DS Solution of exactly how to organically Rank N01 on front page of Google search results by the input of your chosen keyword string/s. Look...Google is a business and makes money from selling advertising space so to remain in business it wants the mindful CONTROL of being the search engine that everybody uses. When we use it, we see adverts, when we see adverts we like, we click and possibly buy into them. Google through it's platforms wants to screw up the organic webmasters conducting site SEO. They'll do this at any given time they choose, in order that webmasters become so frustrated because their website 'shop front windows' aren't being seen that they then buy into advertising to get noticed. If forsake we all used a rival of Google from tomorrow......Google would be fxxked! I came on here thinking that I would see the answer of what to Diversify to and then discover exactly how to apply it and see examples that are current or are working, then to relate it to my own SEO practices. Google is a computer now controlling the minds of humans and wants us all to around like headless chickens. The longer we run around, the more frustrated we get, the more frustrated we get, the more likely we'll buy into their advertising space. I'm in no way being rude to any individual, please forgive my no nonsense terminology if in anyway you find it offensive....I am on you're side.
The problem is that this clearly isn't obvious to too many people. I've seen too many small businesses crushed in the past couple of years by a couple of Google changes because they coasted on the good-old-days of easy SEO victories and assumed it would stay that way forever. This piece wasn't meant as vague, pie-in-the-sky advice - it was really meant as a warning that far too many aren't hearing even a year later.
I'd also argue that single-tactic SEO is a big part of the problem, and it's one reason I don't write those pieces anymore. Focusing on any one tactic can be very effective in the short-term and very destructive in the long-term. Google is getting more complex, and that means corroborating a lot of different signals. If you pile on Likes but have no links, traffic, unique content, etc., or you're building links like a madman but get no click-troughs or socials signals, it's getting easier for Google to tell that you've built a one-trick pony. We have to see the bigger picture, and getting hung up on today's tactic du jour can mean quick wins today and disaster tomorrow.
hi i agree but i have tried to do but my site going back any thing can i do to up my site on some keyword like indian chat room pakistani chat room
This is a nice and truthful article. Nevertheless, I have been trying to promote my website www.slovak-translator.com for some time and it is really difficult to obtain even PR 1.
Dr Pete as always great post and tips for 2013 SEO.... Let's see how diversity tactics work in 2013.
First of all Happy Birthday Erica.
No doubt it's a good post on SEO and the tips provided here will help specially those who are struggling to obtaining good ranking and traffic.
Thank you! :)
Awesome post about the trens for 2013 Dr. Pete. Excellent as always!
Hey Erica happy wala Bday!!!!!
How much old r u?

Thanks. I'm 133 in cat years. ;)
Nice one my blog www.desybo.blogspot.com is just two months old may be this will help
