Prepare to stay out late, polish your dancing shoes and crank up the music. Today, I am very excited to announce that after almost two years, my book explaining everything I know about SEO is finally publicly available!
And the crowd goes wild!
A Bit of Background:
For the past two years I have been working on an SEO resource that I hoped would help level the knowledge playing field in the SEO community. I am very excited to share that it is finally available! I wrote an extremely comprehensive book titled SEO Secrets that literally explains everything I know about SEO. All of it. The good, the bad, the embarrassing and the ugly. (The last two being my self-portrait on the back cover.)
Starting today, you can read all of the knowledge, skills and secrets that I learned during my three years at SEOmoz. This includes all of the processes, paperwork and experiences that the team here used while doing SEO consulting for many of the world's top brands. Cue logo marquee! (Disney, Comcast, Microsoft, Yelp, Facebook, Etsy, etc...).
Isn't Sharing ALL of Your SEO Secrets a Little Overzealous?
While at SEOmoz, I was Lead SEO. Today, I work as the Senior SEO Manager at AT&T. Since these are both in-house SEO jobs, I am in the very unique situation that I can tell the world the valuable secrets I had learned about SEO consulting without it negatively affecting my career or my company. This translates to money in the bank for you!
But Aren't There Already Books About SEO?
After I got this book deal (What. Up.), the first thing I did was read every SEO book that was out there. I learned what I found useful and what was poorly disguised fluff. I quickly realized that if I was going to write a book that I would actually want to read, I would need to focus on making all of its content actionable. I spent several months asking hundreds of different SEOs (that includes many of you!) what they would want to read. I spent the following year and a half writing those answers. Based on my research and the feedback from many of you, I made sure the book answered the following questions:
- How do SEO professionals do link building?
- What paperwork do I need to keep myself protected?
- What metrics should I use for measurement?
- How do you land your first major SEO client?
- How much should I charge for SEO services?
- How do I get speaking gigs?
- How do I effectively work in large organizations?
- What are the best practices for on-page and off-page SEO?
- How do I build my personal SEO brand?
- And more!
I was maniacal about documenting each step of the SEOmoz SEO consulting process and developed mental models and diagrams to help explain in written form not only what we did but how we did it. All of this information is clearly laid out in SEO Secrets.
I am happy to say that I am very proud of how this work turned out. It is the SEO manual that I wish I had had when I was learning SEO. It is actionable, detailed and answers the hard questions that most SEOs are afraid to divulge.
I learned a lot from working with these companies and I learned a lot from all of you. Now I want to give back.
SEO Secrets is globally available and you can order it today from most of your favorite book retailers.
or learn more on Amazon.co.uk
What about e-versions?
Don’t worry, my publisher is working through the tricky worlds of Kindle, iBooks and Nook versions of the book. I’ll have an announcement on my bucket list blog about the topic in the coming weeks.
Good luck and happy SEOing!
Do you think it will be on Kindle?
I have been working on that with my publisher. A Kindle version seems likely but no promises. :-)
Kindle version would be really great! (Just putting my vote out there).
Thanks Danny! I really hope it happens, I already have it on my wish list.
I'm so sorry Danny, but I won't buy until I can get an ebook version (any format). I can't stand printed books any more for so many reasons!
Can you give me one reason why you *hate* printed books?? I am curious now! ;)
I can't speak for everyone, but I wanted to add a +1 on those waiting for the ebook, so I'll add my $.02 here.
Portability I currently have 3-4 dozen books on my ipod Touch that go with me everywhere. Don't feel like studying marketing? I have bibilical scripture study. Don't feel like classics? I have sci-fi (deep, thought-provoking sci-fi, and trashy space opera sci-fi). Plus the books that I don't reference all that often, but are really nice to have when I do need to look something up (the Bible, the Koran, the complete works of William Shakespeare), into which category this book might fall after the first read-through. Which brings us to...
Searchability Say I want to look up the details of where you specify an "official" version of a page for the search engines. This is listed in the table of contents and the index, sure, but what if (for some reason) the word "canonicalization" isn't coming to me? In an ebook, I can ^F and do a search for "official version" or "pass juice" or whatever else I can remember.
Infinite Margins In thought-provoking sci-fi or good, helpful non-fiction, it's nice to be able to mark good passages and make notes to yourself. If the book has 2-5 good points spread throughout 200 pages, sticky notes are fine. But in a good, dense, detailed book, I can end up with more sticky notes than I have edge space. Plus, like Fermat, I sometimes have a great idea that the margins of this book are too small to contain. Ebook allows me an infinite number of annotations with infinite text in them, and I can search my annotations as well. (Also, I feel bad about writing in paper books. My elementary school librarian trained me well.)
That being the case, I hate to buy something that could/is likely to be a great resource that I'd want to take with me everywhere, mark up and search at will... in a dead-tree format, knowing that I'm eventually going to want it electronically. When I first read the post, I was really torn... I wanted to buy it from the publisher for the 40% discount, but I wanted to buy it from Amazon to get the kindle format, and I really wasn't sure if I wanted dead-tree, even at 40% off. Since the ebook isn't an option... I'll wait 'til it is.
they are bulky to carry around, my ipad has a lot of books on it and is smaller than a single book. I can open a book where I left off very quickly and search my books for phrases - hard to do in real books. I'm no tree hugger, but printing on paper just doesnt seem the preferred method for carrying information nowadays..
Love to see this on the iPad through iBook
Could you also consider the nook/BN version? I know amazon charges to make books available on the kindle but BN does not through PubIt. And just in case here's a converter i've used https://www.2epub.com/
2 cents. WANT on eBook!
+1 for Kindle, epub, or pdf, even if they're the same price as the physical book.
Aren't the Amazon and B&N prices are already 40% off without the offer code.
That said, definitely ordering it up. Would prefer an e-book style (Kindle or Nook)
lol, valid point. It wasn't like that when I drafted the post :-) I suppose now it is just easier to save money on the book.
Yeah, I just ordered through Amazon and it was about $4 less including shipping. Shipping from the publisher was more expensive and took longer (7-10 days). Paid $24.88 with 4-5 day shipping included. Great deal! Thanks for writing this Danny.
And seriously....three thumbs down on this post? What in the world for?!
Hi Danny Congrats for the book, really looking forward to it. I really miss your whiteboard friday here at SEOmoz
Any chance of you doing your own version of WBF?
Its funny how following someones personal blog and posts can affect your own life.
Danny mentioned the Paleo Diet in the same week a close friend of mine did, and now I find myself on that...Now I'm buyng his book as well. I think we might have the next Tony Robbins on our hands! ;)
As stated above, need Kindle version and absolutely read it.
any discount codes for:
https://eu.wiley.com/WileyCDA/WileyTitle/productCd-0470554185.html
it costs £24 here, that's NOT an equivalent of the amazon discounted price of $20.
I just finished the Art of SEO and I have been looking forward to this!
But like its been said above, I read everything on my kindle! Is there an e-book version coming?
Agreed. Would love to read this if you could get it digitally (kindle/ipad).
I just oredered the book! thanks! From Amazon. Give me a thumbs up for taking action!
Thank you, your order has been placed.
+1 for a UK promo code
I was a good boy and pre-ordered your book from Amazon two months ago. Paid full price but who cares. I cant wait to get my dirty little SEO hands all over this bad boy!
Hi Danny,
Purchased the book from Amazon, first link on your blog without reading it thoroughly. Doesn't matter if promo code works or not. Something from Moz family is always great.
Thanks,
Preet
Technically you work for T-Mobile now too.
Hi Danny
Just purcashed from your publisher, looking forward to reading, hoping to learn a few new tips :)
Congrats hombre.
I'm sure the book will be as interesting as your travel adventures.
Keep it up.
I wanted to read a full page of this book but everytime i hit "surprise me" on amazon it shows me crap that i don't care about. Like copyright, or glossary...
Congratualtions Danny. I am interested in purchasing this book. What i am looking basically at my stage is scalability and speed in all the tasks/processes related to SEO. For e.g. there are 'N' ways of doing keyword research but i am looking for the fastest, scalable and most efficient way of doing it. Have you provided such type of information? Have you shared your worksheets and how exactly you perform a particular task step by step. For e.g. A task can be something like retrieving the title and meta description of a website with 50k+ pages in few minutes or resolving crawl errors. You know what i mean.
Looks good - it will probably be the first and last SEO paper book I will buy :) I just don't believe in SEO books but since it looks like you cover a lot of aspects and not necessary technical issues it should be a good asset. However, a Kindle version will be fantastic !
Sounds great! Looking forward to picking up a copy and reading up!
Hi Danny!
Congratulations!
I have a question. I collect all my books in my ipad. If there is any digital version to purchase of your book?
Also, beein in Australia, it is very expensive to the deliver this book to my location (In Amazon usually there is a paper version and an kindle version, I always get the Kindle version..)
I am very interested on buying it!

Hi Danny
Same here re the promo code and the Wiley website - the code's not valid (trying from the UK).
I'm a bit confused too - should I just buy on the Amazon UK site as the prices are stated as:
£23.99 down to £17.45 (you save £6.45 27%)
Or is the code you've provided going to bring it down further than that?
And +1 for the ebook version - going to buy my new iPad2 in a few days here in the UK and want to read it on that along with my new Elements of Content Strategy book from A Book Apart!
Thanks :-)
Mark
Sorry about that Mark! I don't know the answer to that right now but i have my publisher looking into your comment right this very second.
Hi Danny
Just done a quick check again and looks like the Wiley discount doesn't work as yet ...
Prices, incase you're wondering -
Amazon US $20.89 = £13.00Amazon UK £17.54Wiley = £23.99 (with discount that doesn't work would be £14.39 which is still more but closer in line to the US price)
Crazy difference hey? No wonder people want buy ebooks - buy direct from US and click "download"
Either DM or email me if the Wiley discount can be resolved - this is as much principles as dollars :-) Can't wait to read your book!
Mark
Excellent. Going to place an order tonight on Amazon.
Yet another book to add to my reading arsenal for the year. :-)
Is "reading arsenal" an intentional pun on your avatar? :)
Thanks Danny. Best of luck at AT&T.
I just ordered the book from Amazon US (in Amazon UK wasn't available anymore - only preorder) but even with expedited shipping I have to wait about three weeks before I can start reading it. :(
If it's going to be available in digital format in the coming weeks than please share it with me. Thanks in advance.
I talked to my publisher and there will be e-versions of the book but the availability date is still unknown.
could you please update that information? I want the e-book version...
Mmmm.... pre-packaged SEO knowledge! Looking forward to getting stuck in. :)
Promotional code is not valid. Please check your code and try again.
:(
Me too. "Promotional code is not valid. Please check your code and try again."
The promotional code seems to be invalid.
Congrats for the new book! Ordering right now before it's sold out ;)
Just purchased. Been looking forward to reading this Danny!
BAM!!! I receieved my book today.Jeeze, that's a lot of reading!
Just ordered, hope Amazon doesn't take too long to ship it to Berlin, I'm really looking forward to your insights!
Got the book on tuesday...already learning some new stuff. woohoo
Well done! I'm looking forward to reading. Just one question: I'd be interested to know if you're looking at putting any chapters online as free content to build interest? Not that it will be needed if the response here is anything to go by, but it would be cool to have something I could recommend to friends so they could try before they buy...
Just purchased to book. Very much looking forward to receiving / reading. Enjoy South America!
Hey all,
I just created a list of people to notify when the e-book version of the book comes out.Feel free to add your name to this list:https://eepurl.com/c7QVU and I’ll e-mail you as soon as its available.
Thanks again everyone! :-)
Great, thanks! And congrats to the book. It must be an awsome feeling to see all these people fighting to get their hands on a book you wrote :)
Glad to see you've already scratched it off your bucket list. Congrats.
The promo code mentioned at the bottom of this article does not appear to work (tried on Europe store, not sure if that makes a difference).
Hey sorry about that! Did you try this from the European version of the Wiley site or from a different site?
If that doesn't work, sensus, pointed out you can get the same deal from Amazon and Barnes and Noble right now. (This wasn't the case earlier today)
Thanks Danny, good to hear - on my way now! :-)
Helped me alot and cleared some questions! Thanks!
The best book, I have ever read on SEO. No blaaah, blaah ... real facts and opinions. I flip through it from time to time to bring things back to my mind.
With sunny regards from Germany,
Sebastian
Just placed my order and looking forward to the read, thanks Danny :)
Congrats Danny-boy! As one of your long-standing fans, I will definitely have to get it! ;) Awesome job! xo
Great book Danny. We bought a copy for our entire SEO staff - of 3. We've all discovered some interesting tricks that we're already implementing.
There is not secret remains now, sharpening ears to new secrets which reveals all "things don't do s in seo"
Congrats on your book!
Congrats Danny. It must feel great to see the finished product of such a huge undertaking. Can't wait to grab a copy.
Danny! Where's the Kindle love, brutha!
Congrats on the book, looking forward to checking it out...
So then I'm off buying it. Congrats on the AT&T by the way. I didn't know where you were going since you left SEOmoz so suddenly.
Congrats on a mammoth effort - every SEO should take a leaf out of your transparency - well done!
I've added this book to my collection. I'm enjoying it.
Oh, and in real paper... not digital. I'm old fasioned that way.
One of the most informational SEO Resources EVER!
Go Danny Go!Damn, I've been waiting for this book for so long, since your "intro" article about the book you made back in 2010. I really found a lot of usefull information from just 1 blogpost so can't wait to finally get the book. I actually preordered it a while ago. I agree, there is just too little stuff about SEO in the books and I like reading books on paper. Related to that, all those guys that "won't buy if there is no electronic version", well great for rest of us ;) jk, I would buy it even if it's written in stone, but just my opinion.
I will take a take a look at it.
Sounds like a winner to me.
I just bought your book. I am excited to read it!
Thank you Danny! Just got it on my iPad Kindle! Good Job! https://goo.gl/m57YB
I just finished reading your book over the weekend and it was better than most the SEO books that I've read. It is very informative, with lots of tips and great tools to use. Two thumbs up!
-Steve
Just bought it on Amazon. Can't wait to read it. Thank you.
I purchased! I can't wait to read it. been hearing the good reviews.
I like this book very much.
Great book Danny, I read it on my iPad.
congratulations on getting the book out! I look forward to reading it. I will wait to see if it comes out on iBook, but if not, then I will get the luggable version : )
Purchased! Can't wait for all the info!
Hi Danny,
Will miss you over at SEO Moz but glad to see you have published a book!
I just wanted to add my vote for a Kindle version of your book :-) I don't really want a paper version as I am in New Zealand (shipping costs are just crazy!).
Wishing you all the best with your book sales :-)
Kind regards,
Karin
I brought your book when I was just learning about SEO and it has helped me loads
Thanks and good luck with your bucket list
Hi Danny,
I have had your book on pre-order for months. So excited and waiting for it to ship from Amazon! Congratulations.
Finally! Congrats - can't wait to read it :)
Nice! I'll definitely be checking this out Danny.
I'm really looking forward to reading this book Danny and I suspect it will have a positive influence on the SEO industry by helping SEO consultants to do better work for their clients.
Just picked up a copy!
I assume your publisher was behind the title. :-)
Great... I was looking forward to your book to be finally published.
Let me finish a couple of things and I will go ordering my copy of it.
Ah... whenever it will come the case of an italian or spanish version, just tell me.
P.S.: great photo!
Congrats Danny! Can't wait to read this - it sounds great!
11 USD for internation shipping :/ 50% of the book cost.
So where is that waiting list for the digital version? ha? comon SEO guy, you can make one with a few clicks we know you can! ;)
The code also doesn't work in Australia, bummed as I was sold!
just order from Amazon. The price is $20.89 USD...even with the coupon it's $20.99, NOT $14.00 as indicated in the post. Plus shipping is cheaper from Amazon.
The coupon is for $14...not the book.
Congrats Danny! Looking forward to reading it over!
Just purchased, looking forward to link building secrets.
Cool! Hope to see you on the bestseller list next to Matt Inman...
lt Congrats on the book.
I just ordered it, so it better not suck :p
All kidding aside, I have never ordered an SEO book because all of the information looked so superficial and dated. You have a book that appeals to me, as an in-house. I am hoping it's aimed at people who already know how to conduct keyword research, the long tail theories, reporting on brand/non-brand numbers etc, and looking to elevate their game.
Congrats on the book! I just placed an order for mine, thanks for the discount coupon.
Oh no! The discount voucher doesn't seem to work in the UK :-(
Congratulations! Just ordered my copy - looking forward to reading it!
Congrats Danny !There are no secrets in SEO.
Ordered.
Danny, you've done great work. Looking forward to the "how to work the SEO industry" book, the industry desperately needs. Great to have it to coming from Moz origins! I just *know* I'll end up recommending this to dozens of people. Hehe.
Congratulations on the book Danny! We're looking forward to reading it over here. So you made the jump to AT&T? Also wonderful news! Do you feel at home yet?
Congrats - had this on pre-order from Amazon in the UK for 4 weeks - was delayed and now has dropped in price. Can't wait to get it!
Just grabbed from B&N.
Shame the promo code didn't work in Australia - would have saved waiting the est. 3 week delivery from US.
Looking forward to it
My order is in! I hope this becomes a must-read for anyone new who joins our team.
Placed our order a few weeks ago on Amazon. Looking forward to it!
Hooray!
I've been waiting for this since you first mentioned it way back. I've ordered and can't wait to read it!
I just ordered from Amazon UK in a rush as the publishers promo code isn't working on their site - it costs £17.54 with FREE Super Saver delivery.
On Amazon US it is $20.89 which is equivalent to £12.92 according to XE.com iphone app but if you want it with FREE super save delivery in the US you have to spend and extra $4.11 making it $25 which is about £15.47 so get it from here for the cheapest price. I couldn't find anything I wanted for that amount so I'm not going to argue over £2. I think if you go for the next shipping option it comes to about the same anyway.
Thanks for this Danny!
Awesome work - I read the sample chapters on the publishers website and they have convinced me to buy.
You might not sell quite as many books as Gary V or Guy this week, but it looks like you are off to a great start. Can't wait to read it. Congrats!
Its cheaper on Amazon. Its $20 and I being a student, I can get a free two day shipping :)
Placing my order today! Looking forward to it.
Awesome :-)
Ordered and can't wait to get it in my hands to read!
Thanks for the Post.
Just pre-ordered the Book off Amazon UK , as the code stated did not work on the publishers Website. Cant wait to start reading it!
Can I get this book at a brick and mortar book store?
Yes! It is available at most major book sellers. Barnes and Nobles, Borders, etc...
Awesome. I am ordering one.
However, how do you deal with some stuff which has been outdated but was new when you were working on it then?
I put a lot of effort into that question and kept thinking about it as I wrote. I did cover the most important tools which will get outdated at some point (but they were necessary to explain to in order to explain bigger ideas) but most of the emphasis of the book is on the consulting process and the SEO mindset. They should last a whole lot longer.
Looking forward to the book. I realize how things change quickly in SEO and having some knowledge from someone like you who has worked the trenches will be valuable. Thanks!
Awesome :-) Just ordered the book - first hard copy after months, mainly reading kindle books these days ;-)
Hi Danny, nice to hear from you again!
What a great gesture of you to let us by the book with a discout of 40% - book already purchased.
And a lot of fun for going on on your Happy Trail!
pretty much following on from what everybody else has said. I've just ordered the book and am looking forward to a good read. Congratz on the release.
I rarely read books on SEO (I only own one other and thats Rand's 'The Art of SEO') because they are usually pretty poor and they go out of date faster than milk.
Good luck with the sales
One word - Finally
Two more words - Well done.
One more word - Ordered!
Danny, I just ordered my copy off Amazon. Seemed like the publisher's site was having some issues this morning.
I can't wait to read your actionable strategies, and I appreciate your contributions to the industry. Well done.
