Today I presented on the link bait panel at SES - one of my very favorite topics. I've always been a fan of Jennifer Laycock and Chris Boggs, but Cameron Olthius, who started out his presentation slowly, gave, in my opinion a better presentation than I. Bravo, Cameron - it's incredibly rare for a first time speaker to have that kind of success and I look forward to working with you on many more panels in the future.
On a separate note, it appears someone was paying excellent attention at the session, as they delivered this prime specimen (embarassing, but certainly a good play at the humor angle).
p.s. Additional props to Jennifer for delivering her presentation a mere 6 weeks before she's due to deliver a baby.
p.p.s. My slides from the session are here.
Wow, thanks for the compliment. I really enjoyed your presentation too. I also caught the Wikipedia, Tagging, and Community session where you did a fantastic job as well. I really like your speaking style, you're so comfortable up there.
It was good meeting you and the rest of the MOZ crew, what a great group of people you guys/girls are.
Hey Rand! It was great to finally meet you and I was lucky enough to hang out with Rebecca, Kat, and Matt a couple times throughout the week!
I went to and enjoyed all of the session you presented at. Shout out to Cameron, too!
I attended the session on link baiting – which I might call content publicity. Well, I did not want to ask this question on a related topic because it could be a rabbit trail. Does google index some adSense listings and report them as media mentions? I'm receiving some Google Alerts that maybe reporting AdSense listings. In the past Google has been charged with giving undue weight to spammy sites simply because they use adSense, but that is very clearly a self-serving way of evaluating a site's link popularity.
Here's a question:
Why is it easier for some people to get link love than others? For instance, while I have had a humble blog why do I only have 19 links according to Yahoo! while some dude named Mahmood Ahmadinejad gets over 2,600 links during one weekend? Does this mean that becoming the President of Iran who is developing nuclear technology against the rest of the world's wishes is effective linkbaiting?
I think you have 5,000+ links, Steven. You just mistyped the query :)
Aww...thanks for checking, Rand. That made my day.
I have more links to my blog than President Ahmadinejad, but still he got over half the links I have in one weekend!
Ha! President Ahmadinejad only has about 635 links according to Site Explorer. That makes me feel even better! :)
It was a great session Rand. I dug the 13 steps - somehow I missed step 3. Gotta check those PowerPoint slides.
It is really nice to see that link building is heading towards providing useful content instead of spamming the hell out of engines. Let's hope the trend continues.
Hope you got home/will get home ok.
What humor angle? :)
Speaking of linkbait...anyone get a call from Samuel L. Jackson recently?

I spent about half my work day a couple Fridays ago sending those out to everyone I knew. Before you nay say my lack of productivity, we were having a work party that evening, so there was actual little work to do (other than buy booze and arrange snacks, of course).
It looks like SEO Fangirl lusts for links...
Congrats, Rand!
Way to go Cameron!
Sigh...I can't believe I have competition.
You need to stop hogging Rand! Get used to it!
I am in possession of an embarrassing picture of SEO Fangirl that I may auction off at some point, depending on how many people she embarrasses, so you may have a chance to get your own back at some point Rand ;)
