We noticed that at the last few SES & Pubcon conferences, the coverage has been overwhelming. You can't say a word or show a slide without finding it 3 hours later all over the search blogosphere. So... we wanted to do something a little different for our coverage. Let's see how Incisive likes giving out press passes to young women whose primary form of journalism is done in the classic multimedia format of... a comic strip!
Don't miss - SES Chicago: The Comic Strip by Rebecca Kelley. Just beware; there's virtually nothing educational contained within. This is for the lighter side of your SEO day; enjoy!
p.s. Do note that you should have a wide screen and allow for some download time. We're talking about 1200 pixel wide comics and 3+ MBs of jpegs.
p.p.s. Yes, she unveils the identity of SEO Fangirl.
p.p.p.s. And yes, of course this post is noisy (but worth it for the laughs).
p.p.p.p.s. (from Rebecca) I used a couple images from Liana Evans and one from Barry Schwartz and Matt McGee, so thanks!
One final update (with signal) - Several folks have asked for my slides from Chicago; here they are - Social Media Marketing & 7 Steps to Linkbait Success.
Brilliant! So, that's what happened in the seedy underbelly of SES Chicago. This was my first SES, so in my naivete I actually went to sessions ;)
As a Chicagoan, I echo lorisa's apology. It was 60 the week before and it's 50 this week, but the conference started with -1 wind chill and ended with -4 wind chill.
Raising the bar on all SEOmoz has to offer its readers. My favorite is the "Winnie Cooper." Outstanding job.
How about some Manga or Anime for SES NY?
I admit I read all the way through looking to find myself in the photographs -- damn it!
A fun read though :-)
Very creative, Rebecca. Thanks for a Friday laugh!
Awesome! Hillarous. great job Rebecca keep 'em coming...
EVEN IN THE COMIC BOOK LAND OF ALL CAPS, SEOmoz BREAKS THE RULES!
Good stuff Rebecca, even though I didn't meet you guys at SES I still enjoyed seeing a recap in comic form!
I want to work with you guys... the creativity is scary... kudos and see yoiu either in London or NYC.... this now has to be the traditional summary of the SES events!
nice work rebecca. now you can pursue a career in comic book layout design in case this whole SEO thing falls thru.
Great job guys. Very funny.
Way way way too funny. Great work Rebecca
Thanks for the kudos, everyone. It was a bit frustrating to make at first (since I was slow at it), but I got the hang of it and whizzed through it by the end. I'm glad you all liked it :)
added it to the SEW blog... just to good to ignore... I don't remember half the pics of me you have.... have to keep a better eye on Rebecca! She is just to good.
Pure genius! You have the honour of being on my Google Personal Homepage RSS aggregator now :oD
Loved it Rebecca. I thought the funniest panel was Calcanis :)
Funny stuff, link bait ahoy!
"Winnie Cooper" is actually Kate Zimmerman of Reprise Media. She works on their Searchviews.com blog.
James Caan FTW refers to "Sonny" from the Godfather films (played by Caan), and FTW (For The Win) is some programmer/geek-centric lingo.
Way to go Rebecca, you clearly have a hit on your hands with this one.
I nominated her for LinkBait of the year - she deserves it. Truly, absolutely the most creative piece I've seen all year, I'm going to promote her too!!
Li - compared to most of our "bait" this was fairly small. I'm thrilled that people liked it, but we put it out mostly because the usual coverage has already been done by so many others.
Compare it to something like Web2.0Awards which received 50,000+ links and several hundred thousand visitors and it looks very small. Not to downplay the enjoyment factor, but I think it's very temporal in nature (personally).
Reprise are good people.... and they have a well stocked frig in the office... what wouldn't convince people to hire them....they are good to me... and both of them used to work at AskJeeves aka Ask.com.... the little engine that could....
Pete and Josh know their stuff and Kate is very well trained.... hell I would hire them if I was leaving my company...
5-stars!
And I will totally be spilling all the dirty little secrets that came out after that second fruity drink for revealing my identity :-P
shhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!! how many links do we have to pay you with to keep you quiet? ;)
btw - who the heck has that picture of Jurina with the cheese on his ass?? Dave? Ward? (I thought you did!)
Not me, Li. I'm not accustomed to taking pictures of guy's asses! (can I say that here?) ;)
There are already pics of you up on Flickr (not from me)
You! I was in SUCH big trouble when you came around the Review Me booth and I knew who you were, but Andy Hagans and Jay Swansson didn't. Jay was doing his best job at trying to get me to spill, and since the wine had gotten to me by then, I was SO CLOSE to tellin'.
Heh. So then, in front of everyone, I started talking to Review Me Roy by addressing him by his real name, since I know who he really is and Andy was trying to get to shut me up :) I don't think anyone heard me or figured out I'd wasn't calling him "Roy".
You floating around and most everyone not knowing who you were yet was a real blast!
Truly, truly fun stuff! Course, I dunnow why I gotta be called out as a gangsta - but whatever!
Rebecca - you realize you must do one of these after every show now, right? lol
LOL... i kept thinking "why is that guy so gangsta" ... I must've missed something there.
Yeah, I stopped thinking hard about who was going to say what and started just having them say the first thing that popped into my head.
Scott, are you suggesting that it actually does not feel good to be a gangsta... because I know several individuals who'd dispute that assertion.
Noted Rand - actually it feels sooooo good ;)
Its hard to pick my favorite strips, but I'd have to say:
1) Neil's "Digg is my Bitch" - Priceless 2) Jason's "I'm a self centered prick" - Daaaaamn! Rebecca - Awesome!
Gangsta Out!
This was just so awesome Rebecca and Rand! Great use of all the photos! :)
This was FUN!! ... to use Rebecca's term - you two "ROCK!"
*bows at the feet of the almighty linking gurus*
Rebecca, This has to be one of the funniest, entertaining, clever, hysterical, brilliant,laugh-out loud funny things I've read! It's a gem! And finally, SEO Fangirl has been outed, for those of us who couldn't make the star attraction of the conference. Fangirl has competition for incredibly witty humor. Rand, keep up the noise. Posts like these are awesome! Risa
Oh my gawd is this ever brilliant! Funny..clever...captures the essence of the conference (the after-hours parts anyway.) A standout effort.
BRAVO!
It's fantastic, Rebecca. One thing I noticed - the panel with Kim Krause Berg & the panel right below it gets repeated twice.
I live in Chicagoland, and the weather here the past couple of days has been in the 50s. Sorry you guys had to endure the few very cold days we've had so far!
Ah, thanks for the catch. Rand's the one who put it up, so I'll have to clamor to get him to fix it.
Sorry kids - I'll try to have it cleaned up in the next hour or two.
OK - I think it's all good now.
No video coverage??
Rebecca you slay me!
I expect to see that bad boy framed and hung on the wall when I come up to visit you guys.
Great job Rebecca! I literally "Laughed out Loud", a few times.
Dam,
It's even more funny the second and third time!
lol!!! I love it! I especially like Neil's little strips, those were hilarious... Oh man, good laugh.
...and yes, this is what kept me busy all week.
I laughed, I cried, I digged and dugged. This was funny as hell guys. Well, Chicago is a fun town (and a drinkin' town too) And Gene and Georgettis is freaking awesome!
Yeap, Chicago is an eating town too.
Great stuff. The line you wrote for Neil saying "Digg is my bitch" was priceless.
I concur w/Jarrod on the literal LOLs.
That was a riot. Scott - you are *so* gangsta dude. COMPTON! Too damn funny.
lol - Truly awesome - I loved your throw-down of gangsta signs Todd - perfect!
This all just makes me triple jealous that I didn't attend. SES NY baby. SES NY.
I felt the same way. Waiting for the NY show.
SES Hawaii sounds like a Great idea! I'll never understand why they have it in Chicago during the winter.
Cheaper rates, after all who would want to be in Chicago in the winter? ;)
that's what i thought - but noooooooooooooooooo ... it's more expensive than San Jose! :(
