As part of a series of SEOmoz self-improvement efforts, we are happy to announce another update to the site! As you've probably already noticed, we just launched a brand new SEOmoz header, footer, and, with these, a distinctly new navigation. Changing navigation can be a tricky business, and if done poorly, can lead to more harm than benefit. We considered this risk when starting this project, but agreed that limitations in the existing navigation were worth addressing:
- Our old navigation tried to support both PRO and non-PRO usage scenarios, and in doing so, didn't do either that well.
- Our existing navigation continued to get squeezed as we added new features. We needed a navigation style that would grow with us.
- We have a whole lot of important features that were buried, and deserved a chance to see the light of day.
- Our designers had some great ideas and wanted a chance make them happen.
Given all of that, we made some important choices.
- Create completely different navigations and styles for PRO vs. non-PRO users, targeting each to key activities
- Support sub-menus in our navigation so more items could be accessible quickly
- Rethink the ordering and organization of the existing elements in the navigation (without messing up the things that already worked well)
We think that the resulting update does a pretty good job of meeting our goals. I'll use the rest of this post to walk through the changes.
For non-PRO or logged-out visitors we created a full width blue and gold navigation. This nav is much more representative of a SAAS site, and supports the types of activities most common to first-time visitors or seekers of free content or tools.
The footer was also redesigned to be better organized and serves to expose some deeper areas of the site as well, while still maintianing space for our key marketing message:
To transition to PRO, we also updated our login page, simplifying it, and adding a bit more Roger:
Careful when entering your login info--Roger feels your pain when you misremember your password. D'oh!:
Once logged in, PRO members have a very different experience. The blue and gold header is replaced with a PRO-centric menu bar to offer quick access to the sorts of features PRO members use most. Top-level items include the PRO Dashboard, Campaigns, Research Tools, Community, and Learn SEO. In the Community and Learn SEO submenus, we have surfaced many of the frustratingly hard-to-find items like webinars, events, and videos (we get people writing in frequently asking where to find these).
The footer for PRO members is much simplified, so as not to be a distraction when focusing on key tasks.
Along with the new navigation, we have added some supporting pages. Clicking on Community from the PRO navigation takes you to a new Community Page, with a summary of recent activity easy access to key areas of the SEOmoz community:
Also, our old clunky webinars page has been replaced with a more usable Webinar area. Yay!
One last area I wanted to call out is a little section at the top right of each page. Using the 'magic' of dropdown menus, we have made account and help options much more accessible! For instance, it is now easy to track down and edit your user profile:
And when you find a bug or think of that killer feature that you just need to share, you can send feedback or access our feature request forum from the help dropdown:
OK, that's about it. Thanks for reading through, and please send along your feedback so we can keep making this better!
P.S. We faced some interesting challenges in making our new navigation work centrally across the multiple applications, languages, and frameworks that we still maintain for some of our tools and features. Check out Myron's post on our dev blog to learn about the technical decisions we made to centralize the code, make it easy to update, and ensure a seamless experience between applications.
Congrats to Adam and the moz product team. Looking good!
Now... When is that new SERPs analysis tool coming to the web app? :-)
p.s. I particularly love the pain Roger feels when passwords/emails are incorrect. Might need to intentionally mess that up a few times.
You're such a tease, Rand.
Definitely waiting on that SERP tool Rand! :)
The SERP tool sounds intriguing!
Definately a great improvement on the website, it is so much easier to find everything that you might be looking for, mission success.
Sidenote: Mozbot needs to learn to smile sometimes, always seems so stressed out!
It looks really good, guys. I can only congratulate your whole team for the great work that they've done!
Really liking the redesign guys, really glad to see you guys are looking out for the users-experience as you continue to create what I and I am sure most willl agree is some of the best SEO software on the market alongside the best community.
I gave it a test drive and everything seems to be easily found within 1-2 clicks and that is all you can ask for :P
May I say that Roger is getting every day more adorable?
Cool new design- please keep us updated on how/if it effects your conversion rate.
I would prefer some stats on "pages per visit" and "time on site". I'm sure both of them should imrove, for SEOmoz website becomes better and better organized! and I love the fact that you keep the design simple!
I miss the blog link being right at the top for me, but I guess I can just type in the proper URL for it. Otherwise, looks great.
New nav bar hides the best features of seomoz (blogs and the blogging community). Might be better for converting first time visitors on their first visit but it really does hide away the best feature that makes visitors turn into community member and long term supporters
Otherwise love the little design touches
btw page footer is weird in FF
Loving the new Pro dashboard nav and design, great step forward guys!
The new design looks great. It is quite a fresh new look and I think it is a perfect fit for SEOmoz. The new login page is another added touch I like. Quite creative!
Love the new navigation layout, much simpler - ever thought about "internationalising" the blog posts/comments (perhaps a flag of origin) to truly show the diverse cultural nature of the seomoz community :)
That's a really cool idea! Maybe we can work that into a future update.
Now that ive used it today, I have really affirmed how much I HATE using websites that have different logged in and logged out states
the new design is simple and fresh I like it. I'm new here but I can confirm you that the navigation and accesibility are one of the best possibile.
I like the new layout! Great job.
I like the new pro dashboard. Its much more simple and intuitive. Can't wait for some new tools too!
We're nearing our 30th day and I love this site. Top notch everything and improving to boot. Well done. I'll be staying on as a PRO member.
I'm loving the new updates guys. Makes the site much easier to navigate amongst my most prized pages :D
Like most of these other comments, I'm really enjoying this redesign. Â Great work, Adam and team! Â But I'm actualy reading the SEOmoz Blog less because it's buried in a sub-menu (it took me a while to figure out where it was). Â FWIW, I think it needs to be in the top-level nav.
Thanks Jonathon! I appreciate the feedback on the placement of the blog access in the nav. We'll give this some thought - we certainly don't want folks abandoning the blog because it is harder to get to.
Simple, Professional, To-The-Point!
Good Job.
At first I wasn't sure about the new changes to the site. They seemed confusing and nothing was where I expected it to be.
After a few days of using it though, everything seems to be much clearer.
The teething problems seem to ahve been sorted out as well (no more SnapABug javascript errors)!
The main problem with the actual site, imho, is that the site is reallyyyy slow, getting through the campaign pages can be a pain. The Q&A is still slow, the blog part is sometime reallyyyy slow.
Even making the comment popup appear can be annoying, the RTE editor is slow to appear, I started writing this comment then the RTE appears and I can't type anymore. Got to improve that !
Congrats Seomoz !! Really neat and apealing design Â
Thumbs up, Â it looks good!
Thumbs up, the new design is very clean, user friendly and easy on the eye. Well done.
Looks good - the Seomoz experience just keeps on improving :)
Wow - going to dig deeper to get a whole overview of the new site, but looks great. Just yesterday I was looking for the webinar page and did it via the search button.
I just noticed some IE7 bugs - don't you consider that old browser any more? It is a small amount of people who still use it but we try always to fix all issued there, too. Do you think that is negligible? That's a question I was wondering the whole time.
Awesome Design! Few days back (last days of my previous office) someone twitted that @Randfish or @SEOmoz have the great sense of design what most of the SEO expert and information providers are missing.
I truly agreed with that as website’s design is the 1st thing that allow user to continue its website journey and with the new design of SEOmoz, they make it even batter then the previous one through I am not a pro member but still I can enjoy the change.
Thank you SEOmoz.
love the fresh new look! :-) good job!
but i notice the affiliate program (which i think some mozzers are also affiliate members) and sitemap (dead link) are missing when logged in.Â
Thanks for the comment, can you shot me an email with the problems you are seeing?!? Â Email me at: casey [at] seomoz.org Â
Thanks!
New design looks good guys, I think the old design was a little trickey for a few aspect of the website. Guess the overall bet will be to see if the new layout increases conversions for you =)
Excellent. Much easier to find stuff. Glad to see the "request a feature" option in there too. I have a few...
Nice job everyone. Liking the interface improvements.
Congrats, cool new layout (though I miss the old one a bit). Appears to be a bit buggy though when viewing in a smaller window in Chrome
Looks Good and Optimized perfect. Â Do u maintain any check list for website update? Please share with them..Â
I'm off to fully exlore the new layout, butrfirst I'm gonna have to go get a box of tissues to dry up my river of tears because the new layout didn't fix the styling issue with the "New!" Â marker. The current goldenrod color and font size makes it next to impossible to quickly scan the comment stream looking for which of the comments are the new comments.
Have you thought about seeing you local eye doctor GNC??? Â I know your getting old and it can be hard to see thing.... Â Just kidding I'll check with our designers and see if we can do something with it.
LOL! WEll, we could always ask Dr. Pete the Usabulity guru to weigh in with his opinion.
I'm just eager for the mozplex to be a shining beacon of best practices. to the world  Usabilty FTW!
I promise you it's in the queue right now. :)
It looks good and is a lot easier to get around - thanks!
I think this sums it up perfectly:

Brilliant work Adam and team!
Thumbs up on the nav re-design. Thanks for keeping the users happy!
