Although the SEO community can, at times, seem overwhelmingly large (with hundreds of blogs and dozens of forums with thousands of users each), the true relative size of the SEO/M industry in comparison to the parent industry of web design and development is miniscule. There are a few ways in which one could reasonably confirm the differences in size:

  1. del.icio.us - compare popular webdesign tags vs. popular seo tags
  2. Forums - WebDesignTalk vs. SEOChat, HighRankings, Cre8asite, SEW or WMW
  3. A Google search for "Web Design" vs. SEO
  4. Technorati tags - Web Design vs. SEO

This shouldn't be a surprise to anyone, but the comparison certainly is interesting. Is SEO a subset of web development? Almost certainly; and so is web design, albeit a more accessible and popular one.
