Just a heads up to our readers and to any SES London attendees: tomorrow evening Rand, Scott, and I will be hopping on a red eye flight to London to attend the SES conference. We'll be in the UK from February 11 until the 16th. Expect lighter posting from the three of us while we're out and about in jolly ol' England. If you're attending the conference, be sure to congratulate Rand on his engagement and check out either of the two panels he'll be speaking on (the Organic Listings Forum from 4:30 to 5:45 pm on Day 1, and the Web Analytics & Measuring Success Overview from 1:15 to 2:30 pm on Day 3).
Also, don't be a stranger to me and to Scott! I'm always happy to meet new people (and who knows, maybe I'll feature you in my SES London comic strip), and since this'll be Scott's first conference (in another country, no less!), be sure to give him a warm welcome and a stiff drink (which he'll need after cramming his 6'5" frame into an airplane seat for 9 1/2 hours).
So, to our beloved SEOmoz readers: we'll be back in the office on Monday, February 19. (Except for me--I'm taking an extended weekend to go snowboarding. Happy President's Day!) To our beloved conference attendees: we'll see you soon!
Never Mind the Bollocks, Here Come Three Mozzers
Events
The author's views are entirely his or her own (excluding the unlikely event of hypnosis) and may not always reflect the views of Moz.
Looking forward to seeing you all again and on my home turf no-less. Remember to check out the pre-show drinks in the Crowne Plaza Hotel on Monday and the LondonSEO.org party on Thursday :)
Don't believe anyone that says that we're all dirty Black Hats over here - I wash at least once a month!
Just saw the site for that SEO.og party - as I said I'm not attending the show but wonder whether it would be worth turning up at the pub anyway...
Sure, even mozzers are invited ;)
I still haven't figured out if being featured in the comic is a good thing. ;) I hope that it's a feature you'll do for each event. I loved the last one. I won't be in London but I'll be at Danny's SMX this summer. I plan on practicing my Ninja camera-dodging skills until then.
And I can relate to Scott. I'm 6'5" too. Buddy, if you can, arrange for the emergency exit seat, you're knees will thank you later.
Good luck at the show guys!
Scott just texted me with news that he scored emergency exit row seats for all three of us. He just earned his hiring right there! (although he may not be too happy about it when I'm half asleep and drooling on his shoulder...)
I was online clicking the refresh button like a crack-addicted lab rat in order to check in and get us emergency exit seats EXACTLY 24 hours before departure.
Glad to hear you'll be joining us in Seattle for SMX.
very nice! now you might be able to enjoy the trip (sans the puddle of Rebeccan drool) instead of getting neurotic about imminent blood clots that you swear are going to happen because you've been sitting in the the same cockeyed position for hours and the snooty ol' coot in the seat in front of you just decided to recline and you have no wear to set your drink because you can't put the lap desk down because your knees are wedged into it's hinges and there's a toddler screaming at firealarm decibels in the seat behind you and you can't recline because he's a lap rider and all you want to do is sleep. Then like a bell, it hits you: You had feet when you started the flight, and you can no longer feel your feet! They're so numb you swear someone stole them!
Yeah, I've had my experiences too. ;) I hope we're never on the same flight because I'd be your competition at the 24 hr mark to get those exit seats. LOL.
You guys are a fun crew! Really looking forward to SMX in a few months.
How many 6'5" search marketers can there be?
It took a single economy class flight with my knees touching my chin to me into a fervent "emergency exit" afficionado.
So... when are the SEOmozzers going to visit sunny Sydney? :)
Shor
Actually, at least one of us is 6'6".
ROIGuy, I look up to you!
God, I hope it's soon. Going to Australia would be awesome!
Rebecca, it'll be just like our flight to SES Chicago! Well, except Scott can play the role of me. He sounds taller than I am though.
See ya in London.
Maybe I can sneak a hit off those noise-canceling headphones!
Have fun!
I so wish I was making the trip... one of my all time favorite places.
Anyway, already anxiously awaiting the A to Zed London edition of the comics. I assume that it will have to include proper English spelling of course.
cheers and save travels
Repeat after me - optimiSation, not optimiZation....
;)
The worse thing about the whole S and Z thing is that, after being there even for a very short period, I still find myself trying to remember sometime which is correct.... organisation vs. organization.
Actually, I should say, worse is saying "niche" with the English pronunciation and people either look at you funny, or look at you puzzled having no idea what you are referring too I still find myself slipping back and forth between both versions.
Fortunately, we're pretty-well practised up. Rebecca spends about 54% of her time teasing Jane about how she, as a product of a former crown colony, spells things.
The other 46% of my time is spent making fun of Matt.
G'nap! G'nap! Robble-Robble-Robble...
Of course, anyone who isn't English but comes from a country which speaks English as a native language is a product of a former colony..
I'm not proud of it, but its a way of getting out of arguments I can't win!
;)
You are funny, that was funny :)
...and then the next trick is to lapse into an incomprehensible (at least to Americans) regional dialect. ;)
i.e.
"Tha's reet abart that lad!"
Actually I'm getting my missus into "Only Fools and Horses" at the moment (for those that don't know, it's a top comedy with heavy cockney accents), I'll stop it every 5 or so minutes and ask her what's going on, she usually has no clue, yet she still wants to watch. :)
It's pitiful but whenever I'm in the States my (fairly standard middle class Home Counties) accent rockets into Hugh Grant territory - I find it helps me get served quicker and stuff. No, really.....
And on the Only Fools & Horses issue, I love the fact that when EastEnders first got shown in the States the TV Guides came with little dictionaries, explaining some of the jargo - ie, that fags refers to cigarettes...
Off topic? Who went off topic?!
Yes, my northern accent tends to take on a 'classic BBC' sound in order to get myself understood over here, although my accent was never that thick in the first place. I pity the geordies, etc. I do find it amusing when the occasional human interest story on the news involving a Brit is subtitled...
Off topic? Nah, this is a thread about the SEOmoz invasion of London, they're going to be hearing all of these accents anyway, may as well get them prepared.
Eeeeh, ah guess thee's reet thar son.
As Daphne from Frasier would say in her region-spanning accent....
Sorry to hear that Lisa, I hope you haven't been eating any Bernard Matthews Turkey twizlers!
I have also been suffering with the dreaded Flu but I'm finally starting to feel my old self and therefore...
I'll be attending the London conference tomorrow and look forward to meeting all Mozzers over a pint or three.
I'll be travelling up from Brighton, so if we meet Rebecca, be ready for a Worthing Vs Brighton discussion!
...I think you'll win.
My boss will be there too.
Hiya Rebecca,
I'm off work with the flu, but nothing is stopping me from going to that conference tomorrow. Look out for someone walking around with their duvet around them and tissue paper sticking out of their nose =) Nice picture huh..
No seriously I've bought every max strength flu capsuels I could find, taken enough vitamin C to kill a horse and god knows what other vitamins.
See you guys there =)
I always bring a steady supply of Airborne and Tylenol to conferences :)
How many of these conferences do you go to per year?
Between 4-6 for SES. I've also done Pubcon, a few private venture capital conferences, the Stanford University Web Workshop and this year, for the first time, I'm doing the NPR/PBS conference on the web in Boston (in two weeks).
Cool! That's a lot of conferences, you must really enjoy them. Does your fiancé travel with you ? (congratulations again on the cool proposal) I'm thinking about attending one of the SES conferences sometime.
I think it would be advantageous to get out more and do some in-person networking. I spend entirely too much time on the computer, but it's all in the master plan. I hate spending any of my time inefficiently though, I'm working very diligently on some projects that are going to be huge and maybe in the next year or so I won't have to live on my computer as much and can spend more time pursuing my other passions.
Shouldn't it be here comes three Mozzers, either way you guys will be missed to say the least.
Enjoy!
Right! Too Right!
Well, since we're plural it would be "come" instead of "comes" (e.g. here we come, here they come, not here we comes, here they comes)
Ok rebecca "The Grammar Nazi" thanks for the explanation. It just didn't sound right in context.
No Harm done
It's both a blessing and a curse :)
In your defense, the actual album title that Rebecca's blog post is based on is "Never Mind The Bollocks: Here's The Sex Pistols." So, if we're trying to be puntastically accurate, you're both wrong.
Cheers!
Yeah, but since we'll be on our way to London, I changed it a bit :)
Either way, the reference to Sex Pistols was witty. :)
Then, you're saying that it should be "here I comes" since I'm singular?
Well, if you ever studied a language, you'd remember conjugating verbs. This one would be:
I come/you come/he or she comes/we come/you all come/they come
So, "comes" applies to singular third person.
Thinker, are you British? Because I think American English and British English handle this differently. In British English, groups (teams, companies, clubs) are plural, while in American English, they are singular.
So, the British would say "here comes three Mozzers," while Americans say "here come three Mozzers."
I am from a South American country that was once a British colony, so our applied engish is of British originality.
So therefore you are right and i didn't realise that, thank you.
OH in case your interested it is Guyana, but i live in New York now so i better confirm :)
I'm English and I would go with here come three mozzers.... And we were the colonists!
I was researching it just now in preparation for a homeschooling lesson and was reminded that it's actually "Presidents' Day". Of course you often see it the other way, but a Grammar Nazi should definitely get it right =)
*sigh* So since I'm a self-described grammar Nazi, now whenever I get anything wrong I'm going to get my head bitten off, eh?
No head biting here! Just teasin' ya. I'm sure I've written "President's Day" before and I'm a stickler for stuff like that too.
Have a safe trip!
And you shall sorely deserve it. This lesson in the great value of humility shouldn't go un-heeded :)
Bah, who needs humility? I was just talking about cleaning up your YOUmoz posts before submitting them. Now I'm getting attacked for misplacing apostrophes in an ambiguous holiday...
Not actually attending SES London (my company has a problem with paying for my ticket 2 months before I leave them apparently!) but please post on where else you might be whilst in London...
Any chance of an SEOmoz UK branch meeting?!
