Over the past few years, one feature has been requested more than any other. We call it Multiseat, which, at its core, is the ability for Moz Pro account owners to provide unique logins for their team members and/or clients.
Multiseat support is something that we have prioritized, reprioritized, started, and restarted, and for a number of reasons (some good, some less good) we never quite got there. Well, I'm happy to announce that after a great collaborative engineering effort, it is finally here!
We actually launched this feature quietly in August and have been monitoring usage and fixing issues to ensure Multiseat was ready for prime time before promoting it. So far hundreds of people are using it, and everything looks good!
In this post I'm going to describe what Multiseat does, how to set it up, who gets access, and what improvements are on the horizon.
What does Multiseat include today?
This first version of Multiseat supports most of the core functions requested by customers. These include:
You can set up unique logins for team members or clients
With Multiseat, you can add anyone who has or creates a free Moz community profile to your account. Previously the only way to share access was to share your password, which was far from ideal and not a great practice from a security perspective.
Multiseat can be useful in many scenarios:
- Providing access to members of your team
- Offering access to a client
- Inviting a consultant to come help with your campaigns
Before Multiseat, if you were sharing your login, it was a pain to change and redistribute passwords if a team member left or a client engagement ended. Now that logins are separate from your core account, you can revoke access to someone who leaves and keep all of your other logins and passwords intact.
Billing information is now kept private to the account owner
This has been a common request, especially for larger organizations. Credit card and billing information is now kept private and is accessible only to the account owner.
You can independently control which account emails you receive
If your company has a lot of people managing a lot of campaigns, you may receive an awful lot of emails about data updates and completed reports, and for this email clutter I sincerely apologize. The good news is that each person with access to an account can now choose which campaigns to follow and thus limit emails from campaigns that aren't relevant.
You can be a seat on multiple accounts
We've heard that some of you engage with multiple clients, each with their own Moz account. You now have the ability to be added to as many client accounts as you need to. For each account to which you have been granted access, you will be able to log in with your own Moz login and password. No more asking each client to give you their login information, and then trying to remember them all.
Your Moz profile, community history and points will stay intact regardless of which accounts you've joined or left
Another benefit of this update is the separation of community profiles from Moz Pro accounts.
As a seat on one or more accounts, your MozPoints and interactions with the community can now follow you from engagement to engagement.
Sweet! So how do I add new logins to my account?
If you go to your account settings, you'll find a brand new tab called Manage Seats (https://moz.com/account). Once here, you will have the option to add one or more of your colleagues to your account.
For more details on how to add seats check out this Q&A post.
Who has access to Multiseat?
All Moz Pro customers get access to Multiseat! Depending on your subscription level, you will have access to between 2 and an unlimited number of seats for your team to use. We packaged Multiseat into our existing subscriptions in a way that offers more seats for levels that are are more agency and team-focused.
That said, we are not yet totally sure how customers will be using this feature, so we will learn and tune as we go forward.
The current limits are as follows:
Subscription Level | No. of Seats |
---|---|
Standard | 2 Seats |
Medium | 10 Seats |
Large | 25 Seats |
Premium | Unlimited Seats |
Enterprise | Unlimited Seats |
What's next for Multiseat?
While we've added a lot of new functionality with this release, there are still some important features that we haven't yet been able to get to. Most notably:
Transfer of account ownership
The next addition we know we need to make is the ability to transfer ownership of an account from one individual to another.
Control over which campaigns a seat can access
For v1, everyone can see all tools and campaigns. We've already received requests to allow the account owner to restrict individual logins so they can only see a subset of campaigns.
Please send us feedback!
This is just the start. We need your help to make this even better. Tell us what critical capabilities we are lacking. Tell us where we built things wrong. Tell us what is confusing. Now that we've launched this feature, we really want to make it work for you.
Also, while I have your attention...
I wanted to call out a few other updates that we've made this summer, just in case you missed them:
Mobile Rankings
Not only have we added Google mobile rankings to our capabilities, but we also gave everyone an extra search engine slot so that you can track mobile rankings for all of your existing campaign keywords without giving up any other search engine data you've been tracking. We also added tracking of Google's "Mobile-friendly" tag, so you can see which of the pages you rank for Google considers to be mobile-friendly. Learn more
Search Visibility Scores
It's been a challenge in the past to see how your rankings are trending across keywords. Search visibility represents the percentage of clicks we estimate that you get based on your ranking position(s) for the keywords you track. Filter by brand or any other tag you've added to see visibility for certain keywords sets, and compare your visibility against your competitors. Learn more
On-Page Analysis workflow improvements
After a lot of good customer feedback, we rethought the on-page analysis feature workflow. Aside from a general facelift, we added the ability for customers to add keywords and pages to analyze and track, or to choose them from a list of suggestions that we update each week. Keep an eye out for some more significant improvements to this feature soon. Learn more
You can now keep up with all of our new Moz Pro features and updates
To help you find all of the new features and updates we make each week, we've added a What's New page that is accessible from any Moz Analytics campaign.
Well, that's about it. Thanks for taking some time to read about our new updates, and as always, don't hesitate to let us know what we can do to make Moz better for you.
Any update on restricting access for clients, multiseat is almost pointless without
Hi Jan!
We're actually right in the middle of implementing back-end changes that enable those campaign specific permissions, while at the same time trying to make sure all the details work for various UX options. Once those changes are live, we'll definitely let folks know. On a side note, we're also seeing a strong adoption of it in its current state, which is pretty cool to see as well.
Hope that helps,
Jacqui Sullivan, Moz xProduct Planning
Hello Jacqui,
Are these backend changes already implemented? Cannot find the function in my dashboard.
Paul
Hi there Paul,
Thanks for checking in about this! Those changes are still in the works and not yet implemented. We know it's a popular request, though. :) If you have any more questions around this (or anything else), our friendly Helpsters can be reached at [email protected]. Take care for now and thanks again!
Definitely looking forward for the ability to restrict access to specific campaigns!
I am very glad seeing that Moz analytics finally pushes out new and/or improved features.
My question: may you tell us about improvements of the Moz Crawl?
I am not asking to make it become such an in-depth crawler as Deepcrawl or Screaming Frog or Onpage.org, but indeed there is space for improvement as, for instance, the possibility to program the crawler so to check out the presence of given strings (eg: analytics UA-XXXX or hreflang
Great question, Gianluca.
Improvements to the crawl are on our radar and being actively discussed. However we have a few notable updates planned related to rankings and on-page that we are working on first. Rand has also shared some sneak peeks at some significant improvements to keyword research that are in the works.
Your ideas around surfacing the presence of GA tags and language make a lot of sense and we will look at those with our next updates to the crawler.
Thanks!
This is what I've been waiting for. Gotta tell this to the team today.
Excellent!
"Control over which campaigns a seat can access" Big Vote for this one please.
Hey, we're 3 months in to multiseat - how are we doing for restricting access for clients to only their data. It's quite important I would say....
Thx
Jez Booker
Seats for clients is kind of useless if they can see all of your clients campagins and your own personal ones. I got excited when I heard about seats and perhaps over promised my customers access to a seat however could not give them one in its current state. Is there an ETA on when seats will have the ability to be assigned to one or more specific campagins rather than free for all access? The same would also apply for other seat access situations where you co-work on a project but have your own and need to limit visibility.
Thanks
Control over which campaigns a seat can access - Yes, please...this way clients can access their agency's Moz account for them. Top of list for me :)
I can't really make use of the "Seats" feature as long as I can't restrict users to seeing only selected campaigns or even certain sections inside selected campaigns. Thanks ;-)
Thank you for this aritcle
Thank GOD!!! This will definately help streamline things for my team.
Very appropriate timing, a client was asking about this recently! Thumbs Up!
I'm already loving this feature, excited to see how you will expand on it in the future!
My inbox is already looking a lot cleaner because of it, no more mass email notifications from EVERYONE'S monthly custom reports ;)
Great feature! Can Owner limit users campaigns view?
Thanks! We don't have this capability yet, but it's on our list for future updates.
Great news! I know this has put off some agencies in the past, look forward to what other features you have up your sleeve at Moz for the future!
Is there a time frame yet to restrict which campaign each login can see. That would be an awesome feature and one that would be very valuable to our team.
Hi guys, we're using you amazing Moz Pro tool, but as we are global company I would really appreciate the possibility to restrict ownership just to particular campaign. Can you tell, when do you expect this feature will be ready?
Thanks, Marian.
Hi Marian,
I'm afraid I don't have a time frame for you yet. There is still a lot of work necessary to make this functionality work, and it's fallen in priority behind some other important projects. I don't believe that this capability will be available any earlier than the third quarter of this year.
Thanks for your patience. If I can help in any other way, please let me know.
Best, Adam
+1 for boosting priority on this :)
Any update on restricting a user to a single campaign? I really need to do this for 3 clients ASAP. Thank you!
Hi John,
Unfortunately I still don't have an ETA on this functionality. Some complex work on our technical architecture is still pending and is required make this possible.
If you don't mind sharing, I'd love to learn more about what you most need to make visible to clients. We are considering ways to support certain scenarios that might not require full access to the tool. May I reach out to you directly?
Thanks,
Adam
Hi Adam, this one lack of functionality has been a pretty major deal breaker for me. I still keep my pro account for your tools but I use other providers to give private label access to data and reports for my clients.
I hear you, Jan. I wish I had better news at the moment, but will continue to provide updates as we make progress.
Hi Adam, I really mostly want data and reports and not so much that a client could manage or change anything.
John, have you tried out custom reports in campaigns? You can embed any of the graphs or tables from a campaign and have updated reports sent automatically daily, weekly, or monthly as a PDF. Each report can be sent to different recipients.
Adam- just fyi - this is the same excuse we've been getting since 2012. It hasn't just worn thin, it's worn right through. I'm another who has kept a basic account all this time, hoping Moz will come through on its repeated promises but I can't really justify it any more with this still not being done. I strongly suspect this will be my last paid month.
And it's cost Moz a lot of business I could have brought, but will not because I refuse to put a client in the position where their data is only available to me. And this is true of many other Moz supporters I've talked to at MozCon and via Q&A.
I've been a solid Moz supporter for years (top 30 or so in MozPoints), but this ongoing delta between what Moz says repeatedly is critically important, and what they actually deliver on, has burned through my goodwill. I can't help but imagine how rock solid this essential infrastrucure requirement would have been many months ago if teh Content project's resources had been brought to bear on this instead.
Paul
Paul, I understand your frustration, and really appreciate your loyalty as a customer over the past few years.
The reason that these updates haven't happened comes down mostly to prioritization based on the time and people we have. I'm not going to say that we always make the right choices, but we try and spend our time on the features, improvements, and stability fixes that are most critical, help the most customers, and keep the business running. Our primary goal for the year has been to get our SEO toolset to be best in class in the areas of keyword research, rankings, site crawl, on-page, and link analysis. That has led us to focus on large projects like keyword explorer, big ranking improvements, and a brand new site crawler and link index, which are still in process. Behind these were other infrastructure projects that were critical to keeping our systems going.
The side effect of focusing our time on these sorts of big problems is that other important workflow, architecture, and reporting changes have been put off. Unfortunately this has left multi-seat improvements languishing. I apologize for this, as I set a different expectation (one that I believed true at the time that I wrote this post).
I'd be happy to discuss directly and see if there are other ways we can support your needs. Please feel free to email me at adam -at- moz.com.
Thank you Moz for this great feature, we really need it :) Just one question, I have different clients added on my Moz Pro and given access to them but don't want each client to see other campaigns. Is there any plan to implement this kind of feature on Moz Pro ?
Adding the ability to control access to campaigns is on our short list for the next round of improvements to Multiseat. I don't have a timeline for this yet, but will keep you posted!
In this article it's mentioned that the Premium account has unlimited amount of seats, but when I go to the pricing page, it says it has 30 seats. Has this been changed?
Thanks for bringing this up! That is definitely a bug on the pricing page - it should say unlimited. I'll make sure it is updated.
Really need the ability to restrict multi-seat access to specific campaigns! How soon?
I'm afraid I don't have a time frame yet. We should have a better idea as we plan out our work for the 4th quarter of the year.
Thanks for the update. Although one thing I really want to see with my Pro Moz acccount, is the ability to integrate Google Analytics goals right in my campaigns and reports. This way, I can show to my client that my work is not only about ranking or traffic, but reaching our goals & objectives.
That makes a lot of sense, David. I'll take this request to the team.
Thanks!
Hi , fantastic feature I would only ask that you add the feature that allows you to control who sees what campaigns.
Thanks
Taj Barr
Thank GOD! I am so tired of gettig 30 day free trials for others to try out. Im posting this on our blog on our Dallas Website Design Website
Love this feature! Excited to get my whole team on it.
This is great to finally have! I hope other SEO tools follow suit soon.
Is changing ownership really that much of a requested feature? I wouldn't have thought that many people wanted to change.
Thanks for updating us and hopefully keep new releases coming!
Good question about the priority of changing ownership. This is one of those things that isn't needed that commonly, but when it is needed it's pretty important, especially in larger organizations. That said, we are going to be monitoring feedback and will prioritize our next update based on the feedback we receive.
Hi Adam,
Love this feature! planning to get my Pro Account soon :-)
Love this feature! Excited to get my whole team on it :-)
I agree this feature is enabled for Pro Users. @Ali Shaikh - if this feature will be enabled for every individual member then the importance of this feature may lose the importance. As being a Pro Member, you have to understand the responsibilities for the forum and you maintain the dignity of it. I am happy for the Pro Users as they got another added feature.
@Adam thanks for making aware about the feature..
Thanks, Nazre.
A great article! It inspires me to do all you explain in it. Thank you Adam!
Hey @Adam.
Why Its only for Pro Account Members? you should Updates for Every contributors and Specialist Members.
Regards:
mm... if you aren't a Pro Subscriber you cannot use Moz Analytics, hence neither you may pretend multi seat :-).
The Contributor and Specialist are two of the many status related to how much and well you contribute to the Moz community, but they don't have anything to see with paid subscription to Moz tools.
I hope I cleared the misunderstanding
No way!
Pro users are paying customers. Specialists and Contributors are ranking. See here: https://moz.com/community/mozpoints
But someone can be aspirant and Pro.
Hi Ali,
Gianluca and Peter are correct in that this particular update is only relevant to people subscribed to our Pro product. It doesn't have any value outside of that context. That said, if there are improvements you would like to see to make the community better, we'd love to hear those too!
