After a whole month on the job I can attest that it’s an exciting time to work at SEOmoz! In the midst of a tough economy, we are delighted to see continued growth in the number of PRO members we serve as well as an impressive stream of consulting inquiries. To help support our next stage of growth, we are hiring an SEO!
I can’t wait to meet the next addition to our team! Please take a look at the job description and if we're a fit, drop us a line. Or, if you know of someone who would be interested please pass along the news.
How's that for a first blog post, Rand? More to come. I promise.
We're Hiring an SEO
Moz News
The author's views are entirely his or her own (excluding the unlikely event of hypnosis) and may not always reflect the views of Moz.
If you guys need some one large to act as head of security and do collections from late clients while still having a firm grasp at what your product it is I might be available :)
By the way I am starting to view the issue with the economy not so much as a bad thing but more of a correction to society. So any fields/companies actually doing their part shouldn't be hit too hard if they see any drop in sales.
I know one of my clients is actually seeing the best online sales he has ever had.
I am confident SEOmoz will continue to grow and even more jobs will be available in the future.
So keep up the good work.
It is kinda odd that SEOmoz is thriving right as the economy is diving. It makes it kind hard to know if SEO is simply a recession proof industry (perhaps companies are cutting costs by switching from PPC to organic SEO), or would we have even more paying members if the economy was stronger.
In this economy, businesses are forced to pay attention to their expenditures and improve ROI. IMHO, organic search is a top-notch marketing investment because traffic can continue to snowball, even past the point ceased funding (if it must occur).
Most other internet marketing channels are only effective for as long as the financial investment continues. Turn off a ppc campaign, ad placement or sponsorship and the traffic goes out with it.
With organic SEO, a solid investment upfront can payoff well into the future. That makes good sense to me and I'm glad to be a part of it. :)
I agree.
I see lots of industry have too many employees employed doing the work that a fraction of the people they employed could be doing. This is all overhead that needs to be cut out.
I know so many people who have office jobs and spend the majority of the day socializing online. If companies hired people who worked during their work days solely I would not be surprised if they could easily replace 5 lazy workers with 1 person who actually worked.
It's one thing to take a 5 minute break an hour, quite another thing to work 5 minutes per hour.
I think if society would get back to working to earn a living all industries would be doing much better.
That's not why you're hiring a new SEO, is it, Lindsay? *gulp* ;P
If I could find one person to hire that could do the work of five other Mozzers we'd be rockin'! Superheros are encouraged to apply (as team additions, not replacements).
No deal. I'll apply... but only if I can replace Rebecca.
Superheroes don't do entry level.. lol
hello,
what I always ask myself is if customers clciks more the ppc ads or skip those an go directly to the organic results.
What do you think?
I think it's more a case that digital/online marketing is cheaper, and completely transparent. A lot of companies who have traditionally worked with offline media agencies are seeing the spectacular ROI opportunity to market through lead generation or ecommerce. At least that's what we've seen, and as a result pillaged other channel's budgets - score!
(note to self: read the other comments first)
For me, and for others I know in the field, it's boomtime, because online marketing is the most economical option. Where we were a frill on top of print and TV ads before, we're now the best choice for what they want to invest.
SEO puts people where they want to be when things pick up -- visible to customers, so many of our clients are actually getting that long-range outlook, too.
Bingo - SEO, and SEM both. I think we'll see print media be completely ravaged by this economy, and a significant move to online advertising for previously slow adopters / non-adopters.
(Now back to your regularly scheduled thread!) ;-)
@bhendrickson: I think it's logical that SEOmoz, as well as other SEO/SEM portals, are thriving in a downward conjunctural trend.
SEM, both organic and sponsored, is a form of, so called, 'down stream' marketing. Regardless of how many no.1 keyword SERPs you may obtain, you still require potential customers/users to take action in searching for your desired keywords. White hat? Black hat? You CANNOT grow the size of the market you're in, you can only grow, or at least defend, your current market share.
Organizations that are dependent of internet-grown orders, and others that haven't made use of its full potential, experience the plunge of their market size through fewer orders, but perceive it as a decrease of their market share (which can be the case of course, but probably isn't).
As a consequence, they start looking for relatively cheap ways to marketing their brand -SEO/SEM-, as traditional advertising suddenly appears to be 'off-budget'. Before hiring an SEO consultant to do their job, they simply try to educate and empower themselves. Hence: a growing body of SEOmoz (PRO) members.
You're just desperate to hire someone so you won't be the office noob any more...I'm onto your shenanigans, Lindsay! :P
Actually, I just wanted a solid first blog post. Not bad, eh? ;)
I was really hoping your first blog post would have a little more OOOMPH! ;)
Well thats an exciting first blog post! Excitied to see you guys grow!
didn't you do this already with cirriculum pita? and darren slatter won?
i got the misspelling..
https://www.google.com/search?hl=en&safe=off&rlz=1T4GGLL_en&q=cirriculum+pita
oh.. wait.. that;s not the misspelling.. lmao!
darren is #3
well at the time i was doing negative seo on my linkedin..
lol..
SEO is a long term thing.. right? hee hee
I was the official cirriculum pita hire, but we're at it again. :)
really? interesting...
congrats.
i just read the description - entry level..
good luck on the new hire.
didn't you do this already with cirriculum pita? and darren slatter won? That reminds me... I still need to change my LinkedIn profile back. Everyone created new profiles for this test, but I actually used my real LinkedIn profile, changing my name to Curriculum Pita. Strangely, none of my contacts seemed to notice or care.
so how come Darren didn't get the job.. i thought he did the way he was mozzing all over the place..
I am actually surprised you do not allow a higher percentage of telecommuting hours. So much of SEO work is on remote servers and other websites anyway. Personally I have found that the normal office chatter, scheduled breaks, ringing phones, etc. are a lot bigger distraction to thought and workflow than most people realize.
With a heavily team orientated approach, we find that the benefits of creative brainstorming in person tend to out-weigh the challenges office distraction.
For example, you could turn to one of your teammates and ask them if "office" is an acceptable contraction of the words "of" and "office," to which they might reply: "Of course it's acceptable; otherwise the second "of" would be duplicate content."
But then someone gets upset because you're destroying keyword saturation.
I work from home a couple times a month, but most of the time I prefer to come into the office because there are fewer distractions and because I like the team atmosphere.
You and Lindsay both have unusually-high levels of school spirit. If I didn't know any better, I'd say Rand hacked your Moz profiles and left these comments for you.
By "team atmosphere" I just mean I like my coworkers. The devs are fun to hang out with, and Lindsay's really nice to work with (so far, anwyay :P).
What happened to you, Rebecca? 6 months ago, the only clarification you would've offered is a roundhouse kick to the face. But now, you're all like... "Hey guys. I'm 'bout to drive my fuel-efficient, beige, mid-sized sedan over to Yawny's Yogurt and pick up some plain, nonfat, low-carb soygurt and maybe a non-flavored seltzer water. Anyone else want anything? No? No one wants Yawny's? Ohh-kaaay..."
i think that would be something fun to do for a few weeks, until i get sacked for not following office hours, i find the best work gets done when no-one is around to bug u!
also like you guys im starting to get too busy! does anyone want to work for me :)-
One of the most lovely aspects of working for SEOmoz is the flexible work schedule. Core office hours are 10-4 with flexibility to put in the rest of the time on the schedule and in the location that best suits the employee.
I no longer have to fight traffic during rush hour, instead applying that time to productive work. Also, I work during the hours that are most effective for me rather than those times of the day when my brain is mush.
I don't think the economy has hit online marketing that hard. I have been looking for (still am) an experienced SEO for a few months and it's not that easy to find someone, at least not here in Dallas.
how much are you offering?
+100k?
I know a SEO guy who might like to move back to Texas. PM me if you are still looking. I'll hook you up.
He really is quite impressive, a photographic memory. Or at least he kicks the trash out of me when it comes to memorization and remembering facts.
Loves to read... any way. Let me know.
You know every time I want to move out of Utah and go after a job, in Washington State, D.C., or Florida my wife reminds that she likes it here and wants to stay.
So my question is does the "Generous health and commuting benefits" include air-fair?
Is this position filled?
We filled one position but are hiring another junior SEO, so you can still apply.
Hi Rebecca
I live in Chicago but went to college on the west coast and would consider moving out there to work with you guys. Did you fill the junior seo position yet? Let me know what I would need to do to get a looksee. Thanks
I think we've been scheduling interviews--maybe you can still sneak your resume in?
how should I submit my resume to you?
I would have loved to joined u but don't have the skills :(
who is in the team? I guess it must be a member of this forum for sure.
good luck guys, its hard to find people to work with.
Too bad it's only for US only.
Do you have to relocate? Can it be a part time position?
-Roibert
It's a full time, on-site position.
Like carralon, I'm not in the US, but it would have been such a great opportunity.
When are opening an office in Israel?!
The online marketing economy is certainly thriving! We just won another contract this morning which was kind of off set by the fact that i reveresed my car into a post!
Great opportunity to any SEO up your way.
Lindsay, you're from Canada. How challenging is it to get the proper Visas to work in the States? I want to work for SEOmoz!
Congrats on expansion Moz' - good point tho - is this position likely to include a work visa?
where is seattle anyway?
Sadly, we are only considering applicants who are authorized to work in the US.
I'm not an immigration lawyer, but if you send me a private message I would be happy to share personal experiences to a fellow Canadian with aspirations South of the border. :)
Lindsay, you're calling this "SEO Expert" position an "entry level position" in the ad...clearly, that's not the case.
Hi Todd,
You've called out something that others have mentioned to me offline as well. Thanks. Lets see if I can explain myself a little better.
The role is an excellent opportunity for an SEO specialist to continue to learn and improve their expertise. We are looking for someone who may not have years of hands-on experience but 'gets it'. The ideal candidate would hit the ground running with expert level knowledge in at least some functional areas of SEO, while rounding out their expertise in all areas with the guidance of the SEOmoz team.
I want this job. I may not have much experience at it but I have been working at SEO for over a year now. My background is film and television. I became very excited about film and began a career and produced several films and television programs over the last ten years. I have never had and industry grab my attention like that of the SEO world and really get me excited. I may not be the obvious choice for this job but in the long term I would certainly prove to be the best choice. I am a winner and I am passionate about SEO. I wouldn't come in as a know it all but rather as an "I GET IT" "point me in the right direction" kind of person.
todd,
i guess "entry level" is relative?
Good luck to the applicants, it's a great opportunity!
a 1st blog post...offering a job!!...great...best luck to all seomoz team
hi Linsay, unfortunately I live in France so i wont be able to apply for that job and actually get it... oh well who wants to work for SEOMoz anyway? : )
Congrats to the successful applicant in advance i'm sure you will have a blast.
I hear you get your own cell "and" an hour in the yard for sunshine every day lol.
Wow, it almost sounds like a dream come true, do we get our own water bowl too? haha
I wish I can be a part of this community.
PS: Posted this announcement on our community!
Hi Lindsay,
I wanted to see if you've had a chance to review my resume and recommendation letters. Please let me know. Thank you!
Best,
The hardest thing about SEO is the correct usage of "a SEO" or "an SEO". Jury is still out for me.
SEO is good, but you should go to your clients and ask 3 simple questions:
1) Where else you advertise? 2) Any problems? 3) What the pain?
You will find that everyone is suffering and wish to improve media buying process, create good video ads, hit radio space, start direct mail campaign.
After this you can hire media buyer, video editor, pr marketer, audio recording specialst etc. With financial crisis it is easy to find experienced people who just lost their job. So, I recommend AdvertisingMoz - full service advertising company. :)
