I spent a few minutes today rebuilding my sidebar in Firefox. I figured it was worth spending 20 minutes or so to save myself hours and hours over the next 12 months. My steps included:
- Adding/Removing/Organizing my folders into how I use the web
- Weeding out all the sites and links I never visit anymore (there were more than 3 dozen)
- Going through, folder by folder, and adding/moving the bookmarks around and changing the title tags to be short and sweet (that way, the sidebar takes up less horizontal space)
- Toughest part - sorting all the dozens of blogs I read by priority and importance/relevance to me
- Creating a few new bookmarklets (Graywolf's list was good, but I needed a few more)
- Going into all the admin sections of the tools I visit and bookmarking those (so I don't have to remember them all)
So now, I've got something cool like this:
And, since I'm the kind of guy who shares way, way, way too much (believe it or not, I actually wanted that for our tagline for a while), I figured I'd go overboard and give you a list of what's in all of my bookmark folders (well, OK, just the first 7):
I've actually taken the time to order these from most favorite to least (or most important to least) as well as categorize, but don't read too much into that - it's just my personal taste:
- Social Buzz
- Reddit - my favorite of the social media trackers, even if it is the hardest to market with.
- Del.icio.us/Popular
- StumbleUpon Buzz Tracker
- TechMeme (I know, I know.. technically, it's not social)
- Digg - least favorite (even though it's important for work, the content that shows up there is pretty "ugh" right now)
- PopURLs (for when I'm lazy)
- Blogs
- Search Engine Land (no surprise, right)
- SERoundtable
- Matt Cutts
- SEO Book
- Gray Wolf
- Marketing Pilgrim (poor Andy got trafficked to death)

I'd love it if folks would share their own tips for sidebar/toolbar optimization in the browser. If you've got some great ideas or sites that I've foolishly overlooked in any of these categories, it would be very cool to list them below - feel free to link out, too.
p.s. Sorry I can't share my tools or articles stuff - even I have to draw the competitive advantage line somewhere :)
Update: Caydel created a downloadable version of all these so you can import them if you feel like sharing bookmarks with me :)
The all in one sidebar has a lot of neat functionality to it and I love it
https://firefox.exxile.net/aios/index.php
NO RSS dude what's up with that?!?!
After perusing the aios site I have to say it looks like a mighty useful extension. Going to give it a test drive right now, great find graywolf!
Funny, not an hour before reading this, I had just run out of room on my Firefox toolbar. I've already shortened all of the link names down to the point of absurdity and use active bookmarks. Next, I'll be putting folders on the toolbar, followed by folders of active bookmarks, and on and on.
I just can't bring myself to use the sidebar. Anything that cuts into my browser space on the sides makes me twitchy.
I think I use the sidebar because I always have widescreen monitors (even my laptop is a Dell widescreen). :)
I don't know why, but I'm a complete video luddite. They had to drag me kicking and screaming to use 1024x768, and my wife forced me to buy a widescreen TV (how many guys have ever said that?). We've all got our issues. When you start using RSS, maybe I'll try out the sidebar :)
Do not forget the feelings of those who were either pruned or not included in your list Rand.
John Andrews did a post like this not long ago where he posted Danny Sullivan's huge list of blogs which in turn pinged all those people who visited his blog and said "Thanks for the link John."
A clever linkbait.
:)
Don't give the game away!
glad we made the list. Shoot - guess I gotta go write a post ... Eric
I think it's time you start using Yoono's extension for Firefox ! It brings you suggestions of website each time you view a page anywhere on the web, and it allows you to share your bookmarks if you like, as well as make OPML and XBEL exports of these !
http:/www.yoono.com
Regards
Now, for those of us who DO use RSS: who's going to make an OPML file of this list? :)
I was going to after making the bookmark.html file... but real life got busy instead. Perhaps I may post one tonight if someone else hasn't done so already; most of these sites are in my feedreader already
Bookmarks are very important, I discovered them and their functionality just a few months ago. Thanks for sharing yours Rand.
Can you expand a bit Mr. SEO Practices?
Surely you don't mean you just discovered bookmarks in IE or Firefox recently? Do you mean you discovered their potential for SEO, if so in what way?
Cheers
Bang Your Drum, I am referring to the use of the social bookmarking sites, you can use them to promote your sites and services (main keywords... oops!). Bookmark your favorites sites on these places and start participating in the community (make relevant friends), try to use your main keywords and link to your sites.
Aha - makes more sense - thanks for answering s
I'm with Dr Pete on this one - sidebars make me twitchy! But I've added all the tools you mention to my links bar (the horizontal one) and the news sources to my active book-marks (those that I didn't have already of course).
And can I just be a total kiss-arse & say that the blog at the top of my list of news sources is SEOmoz? No? Well I just did.....
I'm not a sidebar man at heart, but considering the prevalence of single article fixed layouts (I even use them a lot) a ton of my screen real estate on my dual 19 inch monitor setup is being wasted when I surf. I think I'll take some of the suggestions here and try out some sidebar extensions for firefox.
My vote is for netvibes (www.netvibes.com) all the way!
Yet another amazing post. I never really made use of bookmarks feature until now. Thanks Rand
Where's your leisure folder Rand!? :)
And on the subject of favourites, I'd like my delicious links in my side bar, rather than as a link in my browser...
Hi Rand This type of post is why seomoz is top of my reads every day : ) Keep up the good work, Sam
Great links!
Rand, you are my Primary Short Duration Personal Savior.
You do share way too much, but I reckon it all goes into your Future Link Karma 401k.
My hippie millionaire friend Steve says, "It doesn't cost a thing to be generous. Give away the good stuff freely - it all comes back to you a million times over."
Now, about those tools and articles sites you were mentioning....?
Hello all.
If anyone wants to put these into their own browser, I've created a bookmarks.html file holding the bookmarks which you can easily and quickly import into your existing bookmarks:
WWRB: What Would Rand Bookmark
Caydel - you rock. I'm going to link to that in the post.
Thanks Caydel.
Thanks Rand - You got me to organize my own bookmarks... I owe you a beer.
No RSS yet? Or am I missing something?
You visit each blog manually?
I know. I'm crazy - I just couldn't get into RSS but I don't know why. I tried a lot of different programs and plug-ins for Thunderbird and even start pages but no dice. I just need the GUI to go with the content.
Have you tried Netvibes?
Them and Pageflakes and Google and Yahoo! and Start.com and all the rest... Don't worry about me, though - eventually I'm sure I'll have to learn.
You're not the only one. I never got into RSS either.
Which then makes me think: we can't be the only ones. So what is it that we miss (is it just the GUI), and how could we make something that'd collate feeds, and still display nicely? Thoughts?
Even tried Bloglines without success?
Hey Rand, have you tried the Sage RSS reader extension for Firefox? It works right in the sidebar. Works like a dream and you can customize via CSS.
Lee - yep, tried Sage; I'm just a sucker for an on-site visit...
At first I wasn't crazy about RSS either but I started using one of those stand-alone RSS clients (I think the name was Abilon). Then I discovered the Firefox Livebookmarks and used those for a little bit.
I learnt to use My Yahoo! for reading blogs and other feeds with De.licio.us for bookmarking when I lost all my bookmarks and livebookmarks 3 times after firefox crashed on me. *poof* they disappeared like Mumford!
Something to think about...
lol... even old farts like me use RSS
:-) hehe, that was funny EGOL
It's always nice to see what other sites and tools people are using/reading. I think I've found most of my favorite stuff because of lists like this. Pretty sure there are a few of these links that will make it to my sidebar. Thanks, Rand.
Also, I heard that about the Overture Bid Tool as well. What does that mean for the Page Strength Tool?
Is there a shortcut or a toolbar button to show/hide the sidebar?
ctrl+i in Firefox should do the trick.
ctrl-b pops up the sidebar for me - ctrl-i pops up the page information window on my install.
thanks guys.. they both do the same job for me.. open the bookmarks in the sidebar..
>>SEW Blog (ha, ha... just kidding)
This made me literally laugh out loud.
And that "poor Brian" comment isn't going to win me any sympathy points I'm afraid. :)
I know that most of you guys know Danny personally, but I do find this whole David & Goliath thing that has stirred up around him, SEW and Incisive slightly bizarre.
Maybe it's because I'm from the UK, but I kind of hope that SEW & SES survive and prosper without Danny, and that he does very well at SEL as well....
The best blog for RSS and following blogs is Flock.. I wish Firefox had a Feed-reader like Flock
I have my bookmarks organized in a similar way, the only differnce is that I have them organizef in folders on the bookmarks toolbar so that they take less screen real estate.
BTW, can anyone that can code create a FF extension with the bookmarklets similar to the Y! Siteexplorer extension?
Fun topic Rand, I have a few bookmark tips to share - I've organized my firefox bookmarks into three types and none of them require the sidebar!
1. Bookmarklets - these little dudes are the bookmarks that live on the bookmark toolbar across the top of FF, just under the address bar. These prominent bookmarks are all links that I use day-to-day during work. - Analytics/research bookmarks like Omniture, Hitwise, Nielsen. - Internal workflow/bug-tracking bookmarks - JIRA, our wiki. - Admin login pages - eg. Adwords, Yahoo Search Marketing - Bookmarklet tools, eg. check number of outbound links (see https://bookmarklets.com for more)
*Tip: For any heavily used bookmark, go into the "properties" for each bookmark and give each bookmark a keyword. For example, my google adwords login page uses a keyword called "A". If I hit "Ctrl+L", "A", "Enter" in sequence I'll get to the login screen much faster than scrolling and clicking ever could.
2.Quick Searches - I use these to search Amazon, eBay, flikr, IMDB, rottentomatoes from my address bar. These quick searches are easy to setup.
*Tip - Alternatively, you can do away with quick search bookmarks and just use the quick search box in the top right corner. The hotkeys "Ctrl+K" and "Ctrl+ArrowDown" or "Ctrl+ArrowUp" will help you find your Mycroft search engines.
3.RSS feeds - if you are going to use Firefox as the default RSS reader then I would recommend using the Sage RSS reader extension. Here is what my Sage reader looks like: https://img96.imageshack.us/img96/6366/sageud1...
My feeds are sorted by usage - at the top I have feeds that I check regularly throughout the day. Under the that, I have my feeds organized into categories like search news, other news, sports etc, which are again ordered by view frequency. These sites I'll probably only check twice a day, before and after work.
I used to have over 300 feeds and half again as many bookmarks. Now I organize my feeds like a gardener maintains his hedges - pruned regularly and aggressively. There's a simple test - if a feed's article descriptions aren't worth browsing on a day-to-day basis, I'll probably remove the feed. For 'one-hit-wonder' posts/articles, I'll bookmark them with del.icio.us, where it's much easier to find articles via their tags.
Awesome! this is what I was looking for.
Hey shor - that image link is dead... you still have a snapshot?
One day when I'm an SEO RockStar too, I'll be somewhere on that list of blogs. You KNOW you've made it in the SEO world when you are on Rand's list of must read blogs!
Here's a really big list of handy bookmarklets:

Enjoy!

Rand, that is awesome because just as you posted this I was trying to setup my Pageflakes "workflow" page. Doesn't seem to work out as well since I have like 100 sites/blogs and page flakes can only fit so many.
Awesome post, loving it.
