The v7n...etc. contest is in full swing, with Google and Yahoo! reporting respectable numbers of results in 5 figures. Sadly, the linkdomain searches to the new domains that are ranking aren't quite accurate (I hope). Either that or domain names really do carry a lot of weight in helping to rank. Note some of the leaders:
- www.watching-paint-dry.com/v7ndotcom-elursrebmem - 264 links (varied domains, somewhat natural, although I'd suspect that many of the domains share some owners)
- v7ndotcomelursrebmem.net - 9 links (8 from a single forum)
- v7ndotcomelursrebmem.org - 1 link (from a pixel advertising site - kill me now)
- v7ndotcomelursrebmem.co.uk - 13 links (all from the same domain)
- blog.outer-court.com/archive/2006-01-15-n84.html - 27 links (what's this? Note this link under tools of the trade on V7N itself!!)
It's still a bit early to be seeing the link networks that will undoubtedly expose themselves, but we're still seeing some interesting trends (particularly with regard to the well ranking 2nd, 3rd and 4th results).
Jim, I'm pretty sure (other) Jim's tool (neat-o) uses Yahoo!'s link data. As for MSN - I like their link data, too, but the numbers they give are so far off, it just isn't real. Yahoo!'s number of links is at least accurate and they've gotten much better about showing more important links in the first 1-200.
Well, you need both links and content. IMO SEO is composed of 3 factors: targetting (keywords, which public etc.), relevancy (on-page) and popularity (links).
Just a question about your post Rand. I have found MSN better when analyzing backlinks together with this tool and actually don't use Yahoo at all.
Do you have other experience that Yahoo is better? Would be nice to know.
Your fan, Jim.
Ok thanks. Didn't know neat-o used Yahoo, interesting. Yes, MSN shows the number of every single link so those sitewide ones shows up as thousands. I will try out Yahoo more now and I will see if I like it. Thanks.
netsearchresearch,
I'm glad that you're doing so well but I wouldn't get too excited if I were you. I don't think the seo big guns are going to shoot all of their bullets right off the bat...they're going to do it towards the end of the contest. Timing is everything.
Good information...keep it flowing.

gzlatin,
I am a SEO pro and that is my plan I won the echolist directory seo contest ending december 31st. So I know how to win these contest. I have only used 7 links to get my spot. I have plenty more left I am now work on testing other stratagies on other sites. SEO contest are great for this. I will learn a lot from this contest. I am the first SEO to find out the power of the pixel ads but you must know what one are configured properly to help you some are worthless. Pixel ads are one of the latest trends a guy started it to pay for collage and sold 1 million pixels for $1 each. check it out milliondollarhomepage.com sold out of 1 million pixels at $1 a pixel
That pixel site has 30,000 backlinks LOL
v7ndotcomelursrebmem.org is my site I am now number 1
I only added 7 links to the domain. 3 from pixel ads LOL 1 from my winning echolistdirectory.com site I won the echolist directory contest with this site. and 2 from 2 of my other sites.
Yes Domain names do have a lot of weight I won the echolist contest with just a few links I have a few other domain names I am going to try like v7ndotcom.elursrebmem.org lets see if google like it. I will set it up this weekend. can I make it #2 with 7 good links
Michael,
You outrank major media outlets because they are not competing for specific terms. They are very broad by nature. Sure, I can sell sweaters and outrank The Gap for the term "sweaters" but The Gap is going to rank pretty high for a larger amount of terms, not just sweaters, because of their authority.
Again, it's all about links. At the end of the day, good content is still just another way to get links.
Michael - I suspect you're right. But it's the best link data we can access, right?
By the end of February, we should have reasonable amounts of link data from Yahoo! that represent at least a good portion of the "important" links Google knows about for these guys.
I would like to see a contest for difficult keywords. New domain targeting hard key words. IMO, I think that would be more telling.
Michael, I can't think of anything that is more important to seo and rankings than links...
Micheal,
Going slightly off topic here...your statement that the SEO community has overvalued link strength for too long is really about what SEO is. Surely SEO is a broader topic than search engines and is more about optimising a web site in order to increase the amount of targeted traffic. Link building is an important aspect of this, as it can bring relevant referrals (ok, not all links are relevant), the point it also has an effect on the SERP's is a bonus!
Id like to see you get a web site to the top of the search engines for a competitive term without actively getting involved in a link building campaign (link bait, blogs, partnerships etc), and if you can then I'll eat my hat and forever be quiet!
I considered competing for a few seconds until i remembered that every seo that gets involved will be showing their entire hand of cards. Crazy people getting involved in something like this.
