Rand was astounded to see that typing in "rand fishkin birthday" brought up the following results in Google:
Rand's birthday gets a one box result?! WHAAAAA??! The one box result is via Answers.com, which is via a (surprise surprise) Wikipedia entry about Rand. Let's see if any other SEOs get the prestigious one box treatment...
We tried other SEOs, to no avail (Barry Schwartz, Chris Sherman, Andy Beal, etc). Is Rand the only SEO special enough to score a one-box result?
Finally, a search for "danny sullivan birthday" yielded the results we were looking for...
Wait, Danny's HOW old?!
...what the hell is "racing-reference.info"?
Ah, clearly this isn't the Danny Sullivan we know and love. Whew!
And sure enough, right under the one box result:
I guess Danny's not "one box" material, after all... ;)
P.S. Obviously, the title of this is directed towards 57-year old racing guy Danny Sullivan, and not the young, hip, spry Danny Sullivan we adore. (Please don't take away my speaking gigs, Danny. Blame Rand, not me!)

I pay good money to keep my age out of Google's Onebox. ;-)
Clearly it's paying off. ;)
No complaining for you, Mister. You've got fewer gray hairs than I do :)
Don't let Mr Cutts hear you say that :)
I'd pay good money to be a race car driver. Oh wait, I did: Caught Speeding By A Bloody Mobile Speed Camera!
Yeah, it was quite experience to be zipping around Salisbury in your Mini Cooper... ;P
Oh my God... Danny logged in to SEOmoz!! OK - nevermind what I said at lunch today, Rebecca. Scrap that post we worked on and say something nice about Sphinn instead... :)
Believe in Rebecca... She is the way and the light.
No complaints from ANYONE about who's old!And where did you hide my cane?
Btw, nice driving, Danny. I'm impressed that you can zip around on either side of the road, depending on your location, and never get your wires crossed. Slow, fast, or otherwise, for a man who hops back and forth between countries with alternating driving lanes you've got an excellent record.
This post is my punishment for joking about the results at the office today. Now let's just hope it doesn't rank anywhere for "Danny Sullivan" searches...
Hey Rand, happy belated Birthday! Hope your squishee's were 100% syrup!
Here's hoping he didn't do something stupid like join the boy scouts...
Happy birthday, Rand! My brother, uncle, and cousin were all born on July 10th. Must be something in the air around October 10th ;)
I had to try it, thinking "there's no way I'll pop up". Then I remembered that I was dumb enough to mention my age and upcoming birthday in a recent blog post. So, right on line one of result #1 for "peter meyers birthday", it's there for all the world to see.
Somehow this one didn't make it into my feed reader. Weird. No results for my birthday, but happy belated birthday, Rand. I was born the same year as you - I'll catch you up in October.
Did your Dr. Evil cap arrive yet? We can pretend it was a birthday present...
i don't trust anyone under 30.
please hire some old consultants with big time academic and fortune 500 credentials.
thanks :)
Someone old? We've got 2 Ancient Ones. That's 25% of us.
And the oldest among us has some pretty impressive creds to his name, too.
You know where to find the photo. ;)
I have a general rule of thumb not to trust anyone born in the 80s (and evilgreenmonkey backs this theory up).
I can't believe Rand is only 28. I think I want to kill myself - I'm so old!
Hey, if I had feelings they'd be hurt right now!
Exactly - if!
;)
Damn- totally missed your birthday...
Happy Birthday Rand afterwards!!
Happy belated birthday!
I wonder if the 'other' Danny Sullivan gave this post a thumbs down? hmmmm?
Rebecca, you may have hurt his feelings! lol
"P.S. Obviously, the title of this is directed towards 57-year old racing guy Danny Sullivan, and the the young, hip, spry Danny Sullivan we adore."
Heh. I think there might be a "not" missing from that sentence, ie:
"P.S. Obviously, the title of this is directed towards 57-year old racing guy Danny Sullivan, and NOT the the young, hip, spry Danny Sullivan we adore."
At the risk of sounding like a proof-reader for the moz, I have elected not to point out the "the the" :P
Blehhh, thanks for catching that.
Happy birthday for the other day Rand!
You've caught me up, 28 is a great age to be
Maybe what we need is a varient of Google & Yahoo Local and Google Calandar named Google / Yahoo Birthdays--where we get to input and save the name, birth date, and any other info and then choose to make that listing public or private.
They'd develop a birthday list with, perhaps, a lot of good data mining (and ranking) potential and we get a portable reference of the important dates we're not supposed to forget.
too bad mine didn't show :)
Shouldn't Google be smart enough using personalized search to realize you are either a) an SEO or b) a race fan by the web sites you are looking at and show the appropriate birthday?
That would be quite impressive.
Happy Belated Birthday Rand!
Sure it knows your birthday -- but wait till it picks your perfect gift.... (oooooo, theremin music..)
I think it´ll take a whole eternity for my name to show up with my birthday in a one box result, but there´s hope . . . right ? !
I clicked on the link for Danny Sullivan and I didn´t get the same result like you, I don´t see this one box result info gathered from the racing-reference.info site. Maybe it´s ´cos Google did the search at google.de and not at google.com ( I´m currently in Germany ). An other reason could be that Google is about to give "our" Danny Sullivan a one box result so the old result had to go :D
That is too funny... perhaps one of the funniest things I've seen all week!
Looks like Google's not just into personalization, but getting up-close and personal too! ;)
And btw, Happy belated, Rand!
Wow. Rand and I are born on the same day.
We also share the date with Greg Niland.
This is good to all my Favorite SEO Start (Rand Fishkin, danny sullivan and Andy Beal) on one platform. I want to know birthday of all you in my list. Please share this with me.
