This morning at Mozcon, I announced the launch of Open Site Explorer v3, a long-awaited upgrade to one of the most popular marketing tools on the web. I'm more than a little excited about all the progress, hard work and remarkable features that are included in this upgrade, so let's get right to them.
The first thing you'll notice is the new design (of which I'm a huge fan):
This continues into the top view of link data and now, social metrics. I've always wanted these to be side-by-side, and it's great to finally be able to see both at the same time.
The menus of filters have improved, and there's now a new visualization to show links as groups in domains or as separate links (like the classic Yahoo! Site Explorer view).
Social metrics are also included in the Top Pages reports, so you can see how the most-linked-to content has performed on the social web. This is particularly cool for popular blogs.
The anchor text and linking domains tabs have a new feature that lets you see a sample of the links that come from that domain (or with that anchor text). Beware that right now, there's a small bug where we're sorting those links we do show in some odd ways. This should be fixed in the next Linkscape update.
Comparison reports have also taken a nice step forward, and feature the ability to side-by-side compare metrics for pages, subdomains and root domains on up to 5 sites simultaneously. They match the metrics you can get in the PRO web app, as well, which is very cool.
And last, but not least, the new advanced reports tab lets you query like a SQL master! Without having to write any complex logic against our API (though you can still do lots of awesome stuff with that), you can grab any combination of link sorts, filters and keywords you'd like (and exclude data you don't want). This is particularly excellent for link builders looking at competitive or industry-related sites' link profiles, and I expect we'll see a number of blog posts in the near future with strategies on how to employ this tool.
In addition to all the amazing new features in Open Site Explorer, Linkscape's index just updated using a new infrastructure that's allowed us to crawl much deeper on large, important sites. For many pages/domains, this will mean an increase in the total number of links we report, but likely a lower count of linking domains (unless you've gained a lot of links in late June/July) since we're excluding many domains that are low-quality/not-well-linked-to. We'd love your feedback on this index, as it's the first one of its kind, and will continue to see tweaks/improvements over the next few updates.
- 58,273,105,508 (58.2 billion) URLs +47% from June (our largest index growth ever from one month to another!)
- 637,828,397 (637 million) Subdomains +71% (it appears the domains we're crawling have more subdomains)
- 91,013,438 (91 million) Root Domains -23% (due to the depth vs. breadth focus of this crawl)
- 456,474,577,597 (456 billion) Links +14%
- Followed vs. Nofollowed
- 2.28% of all links found were nofollowed +5%
- 60.44% of nofollowed links are internal, 39.56% are external
- Rel Canonical - 9.50% of all pages now employ a rel=canonical tag +20% (my guess is higher quality domains are more likely to employ rel=canonical)
- The average page has 78.64 links on it (+30% from 60.67 last index)
- 65.33 internal links on average
- 13.32 external links on average
We're looking forward to your feedback on the new features and the new index (which we plan to continue iterating upon). There's actually even more new features coming in September, so stay tuned and thanks so much for all the support and use of OSE; it's run more than a million reports, and we hope the next million are just around the corner.
I dont like the new email me the report feature..thats fine as an option but its not good if your trying to download a bunch of reports say for your top 10 or 20 competitors etc. It becomes an annoying mess.
That said the other changes look really great!
I agree. Bring back the export.
I agree, but I have a feeling that the email solution was built in to queue the requests and avoid server overloads. A lot of OSE users vs. SEOMoz servers. :-)
We've talked with our Product Team and they will be looking at adding it back in. Give us some time and we'll make it come back.
Brilliant thanks mozzers
I agree 100% I do not want to recieve 10 emails if I pull 10 reports, the old function was the better version =)
Also 10 minute wait time now on OSE reports???
I'll second that.. bring back the export option to xl etc etc please.
Fantastic work to everyone involved. The new OSE is super slick (and unless I'm imagining things it's quicker too?).
For those who like JS bookmarklets here's a few for the new OSE:
OSE data for a domain:
javascript:location.href='https://www.opensiteexplorer.org/links?site='+location.host
OSE data for a page:
javascript:location.href='https://www.opensiteexplorer.org/links?site='+location.href
Hey guys, great news about the update and excited about using it to analyse more.
One thing though - I looked at data last week for a client and it said 1,330 Total Links, today I'm getting 438 Total Links.
I've checked that I'm using the same filters etc so don't understand why this might be, perhaps I'm missing something... for example, the old version listed the client's own Twitter profile as one of the links, but the new version isn't showing this even though the link still exists.
Any ideas?
Thank you so much, keep up the good work :)
We noticed the same number drop on three of the domains we run, and then our other domain shot up (by a lot). Very strange. I'm wondering if there is a problem with the new link landscape, or perhaps the old one was always flawed? I guess only a couple months worth of data will tell..
Good luck! Happy optimizing :)
Andrew
Simply amazing! Not only is the functionality there but the usability is flawless...
With one exception... Any chance there will be an export option (pdf, excel) for pro memebers with seomoz? Specificly for the compare link metrics section?
+1 for export function...
Rand, can you share with us why you do not want to record historical data?
Maybe this would create a massive amount of data. I know current data must be huge without recording historical data.
I seem to be the only voice of dissent here but to add to my earlier comment, I am doing some competitor research and the 'send csv' thing has slowed me down to such an extent that I am going to have to use another tool for this purpose in the future. I asked for the first csv to be sent over half an hour ago and as yet nothing has arrived. Any upgrade that slows you down isn't an upgrade. Doesn't anybody else agree with me?
I feel like a school girls first crush!! This is just awesome!!
Visually- love the new layout, the shade of blue is one of my favorites so I'm more than biased.
Top Pages- just the raw amount of information that you get from a single page is fantastic. It is so much deeper than the previous version.
Linking Domains- HOly #$%^ the TLD distribution chart is SWEET! plus the embed option is a nice touch
Anchor Text- at first glance it looks like the previous OSE but, then I noticed a little (+) under each term...and then BOOOM the "top linking pages using that anchor text" ummm I cant sit still thinking about all the competitors sites I can't wait to reverse engineer!!
Compare Link Metrics- THis page just blows the last version of OSE not only out of the water but out of the Earth! The ability to compare 5 sites side by side with the deep level of analysis in one place is priceless.
Overall the new version of OSE is more than a simple "upgrade" I'll have to try the social integration later! But bottom line is the new OSE is AWESOME!!
I was actually writing a blog that talked about OSE when I suddenly noticed the change. I completely agree, the link metrics and anchor text are staggering. Unreal, folks...you continue to astound.
Excellent, love it so far, well done gang.
Any plans to introduce more features on the keyword discovery end of SEO? Tools like Market Samurai make a stab at it but I'm sure the Mozzers could do better?!
Thanks again for the upgrade on OSE.
The new OpenSite Explorer looks great and now have all the features I was looking forward to - advanced reporting and more informatin about the link metrics. Thanks for updating it :)
I am seeing something strange though, all the websites of our clients seem to be loosing domain authority. It appears that in some cases the number of links to the domain is lower with 500 000 when compared to last month. What could be the reason for that? Any suggestions
It's fantastic, love the social media integration and redesign, but there are some key things that have made usability much harder for me. I'd love to have the number of the link back on the left - you can't see at a glance whether a link is #56 (or whatever) in the list very easily. Also, I don't particularly want CSVs to be emailed to me - that function doesn't seem to be working right now anyway - I just want to download them instantly like before, or at least have an option for both. I'm sitting here right now and my manager has asked me to find out how influential a particular link is: the CSV function isn't working and I have no numbers next to the links, so it's going to take me forever to track it down from Ctrl F'ing through tons of pages and then counting down the page when I do find it. - Jenni
With the OSE update, the Page and Domain metrics are lower, but I know this isn't necessarily a bad thing, but aren't sure exactly how. Is it because the overall scope was adjusted downwards?
I have seen this as well. All of the websites I track are showing lower Page & Domain metrics. I wonder if weaker links are not being counted or are being discounted.
For a site I rely on more than any other, it's SO great to get this much added value one random Wednesday. After a quick look and play-around I can tell I'm gonna love the new set-up. Thanks Moz! (That 'thanks Moz' doubles as a thank-you to Morrissey for years of great tunes... just in case he reads the comments in SEO blogs... there's always a chance...)
Brilliant upgrade. Mad props to your design team, and your programmers!
Ew. Except for the new "report by email" configuration, rather than the instand download! Ew!
Dont mean to rain on the parade here, but the link metrics are all over the place - I was halfway thorugh a report for a client which I'm now going to have to entirely re-write because they and their competitors figures are up, down and generally all over the place since Monday - and by huge factors (several hundred percent discrepancies in some cases).
I think an explanation of how and why the figures have been altered so dramatically would be useful...? Otherwise there's going to be a lot of unhappy and confused clients out there...
The update has some nice new features but is totally ruined by the 'send csv' instead of 'download csv'.
Great news the new design looks great,
My only concern is:
1. Have the problems with down time been fixed with OSE, we pull a lot of reports a month and I notice during specific hours the tool does not work.
2. The funication to SEND as email is a bit annoying, I don't want to send emails every time I pull a report I would rather the old way where you can download the reports straight away. (I noticed this was mentioned earlier, I agree 100% with this comment)
Yet overall it looks good, some great new funictions, great work by the SEOmoz dev team, you guys have been working over time to create wonderful tools.
So far, the F.B. data tha I obtain on any site (including O.S.E.) is known to be false. I know that the site has at least 1 "Like" and 1 "Share" but ALL of the social search tools (incluidng O.S.E.) report F.B. Likes and Shares as 0's. [O.S.E. reported the (one) G+ I received today.] Does F.B. provide such data for sites that do not have ".com" domain names? Is there some other quirk that would prevent ANY data from being reported?
Hey Rand, loving the updates and new look. I agree with the commenters who want the export CSV data feature to return, rather than sending an email. I also noticed one more change that got rid of a feature from the old OSE. I noticed the top pages tab no longer shows the http status. Is this information somewhere else now? If not, is it possible to get it back? I used it ask a quick glance to check for 302s, 301s, etc. so I'd really like it back? Does anyone else agree?
Hey Adria - that feature is still there for me, 5th column across on the top pages tab?
Is there any side by side comparison with Majestic SEO?
Awesome stuff, I love it when the index gets updated! The interface is really much improved.
On a seperate note, I recently built a bulk checker tool that can check up to 500 URLs at a time - I put it on a domain at mozcheck.com/ if it interests anyone.
Hey dude Your bulk cheker ROCKS!!!!
Great work as always. Your old site explorer was invaluable and this is even better.
Awesome! I've been wishing for a group by domain feature for links for a while now :) Many thanks!
the group by domain feature alone is enough to make it better than yahoo site explorer imo!!
Love it! great work mozzers!
Really nice features. I have to say that I miss the "compare metrics" Graph. This graph was really nice to show a quick view of a site's information against others. Why was it taking away?
Fantastic , great to have the social stats introduced and also the group by domain function.
Awesome WORK! :)
Hi,
What a great tool! How quickly do new backlinks show up? Mine seem to be quite out-of-date but maybe I'm doing something wrong...
Thanks.
Victoria
Hi Rand,
I am a link builder in Leeds UK. We use open site explorer every day. However, since yesterday I have experienced some problems with it. When I try to download a report it gets really slow and after 5 or 6 minutes appears this: "Oops! Roger MozBot got lost exploring and our system is temporarily down. We hope to find him soon, so check back in a couple of hours. Meanwhile, why don't you watch a puppy battle himself?"
How can we solve this as I have A LOT to do and I really need this tool at the moment.
Thanks a lot,
Maria.
Hi Maria,
The help team has been emailed about this. It's not quite six in the morning Pacific Moz Time, so it might be a little bit before we hear back from them, but I'm sure it'll be first on their list when they get up this morning. So sorry for the troubles!
Keri Morgret
Awesome, certainly going to help.
This looks incredibly useful. Thanks guys!
A great tool! I'm especially fond of the site comparison (makes it easier to explain to customers why such-and-such doesn't work).
I guess it's time to go PRO to see those social metrics:)
Can't believe I just barely found out about this. Thanks, it's going to be a great replacement for yahoo site explorer.
It was one of the best tool for checking the backlinks of any website. This tool has been upgrated & also the interface is much improved , I like this tool & want to give thanks to Rand for this awesome tool. This will really help us to check & analyze the backlinks of our & competitors website.
Well!Excellent news i like to new features.
Just had a brief look round. Looks fantastic I must say, a massive improvement on an already great tool.
Out of interest how often do you update the Linkscape data. Is this a regular update on a monthly basis or is it more sporadic than that?
Thanks
It's all here: https://apiwiki.seomoz.org/w/page/25141119/Linkscape-Schedule - Jenni
Looks great, keep up the good work! :-)
This might just get me to sign up to the preimum!
Super-awesome. The side by side x5 comparison and the social metrics are just superb! Good work guys.
It was about time for a major update to Open Site Explorer. Realy good job on the new update.
Really great this new version!
Maybe there's a little addon can be useful for many other than me in new advanced reports: the possibility to excluderesults by URL terms. I know it's possible to track just by external linking page. But take as example expedia: they have .com .fr .ca TLDs who refers between them.
Just my 2 cents :)
Loved this tool before but now it just kicks ass!! Awesome job guys!!
How does this compare to something like Ahrefs?

Hello Rand,
I've been using OSE from last few months & it's really an excellent tool for competitor analysis but adding new features in it like integration of social media data is even more helpful now.
The redesign looks beautiful! Thanks for making my favorite SEO research tool even better :)
My only suggestion would be to make it auto-remove the (https://) from the URLs when I paste them from my address bar into the text field.
Thanks for all the effort you're putting in to give us great tools. I would make a request (seconding the sentiments of many here) for a breadth instead of a depth spidering. Many of us work on smaller sites, and this would seem to limit the exposure of smaller sites to your spiders and thus metrics. Additionally, it would seem to give less variety of backlinks. If I'm doing competitive backlink research, I want to get the as many as possible link ideas from different domains, as opposed to lots of links from the same domain.
Excited for the new update
Seems like your email CSV file doesnt work...atleast for me.
Its a big turn off.
Loving the update so far...and the social stuff is clutch. Great to see it.
Quick question/observation...I'm seeing some pretty significant drop offs in total links and external followed links for a few clients.
Is anyone else seeing this and, if so, does anyone have any insight into why this is happening?
Sorry if this was already addressed.
Looks really amazing. Love the new UI, very intuitive, job well done. Thanks.
Very cool tool. I love it. It got me to register for your site, and I just spent an hour filling out my profile.
Powerful - phantastic - gorgeous!
This is a great site for us to learn a lot more about our links etc. We finally have discovered this and very happy to be able to see the details behind our web. Hopefully we can get on top of this and improve our ratings.
Cheers
Mayan Legacy
Powerful stuff,
Thanks for this SEOmoz. You are constantly making Optimisation easier for us and more actionable which is countering the confusing of Social Signals of late as it's over-hyped and everybody thinks Social Signals are going to replace the basic concepts of SEO which isn't going to happen.
Wow...Its Brilliant. Great work. Thanks
Love the new version of this Rand. The drop downs for the linking root domains has been a great new feature to play with. Thanks for all the hard work.
I have to agree with the CSV comments as well. Not being able to download it directly has become a huge inconvenience. I understand there's more data, options, filters, etc., but it has slowed down my workflow significantly. Of course, everything else about the upgrade is excellent.
Hey guuys, love the new layout and design. Looks really slick and runs really well. The social elements are good too, but I notice on a few urls that the social data is incorrect. Any reason why this maybe happening?
Impressed with the site comparrison function. Saves so much time in outlining to clients why another site is out ranking them!
Keep up the good work. But you don't really need me to tell you that. You will anyway! :)
Small problem with your social counters https://screencast.com/t/oN5ab6izG (new Chrome, win 7)
Loving the additional metrics. Is there a way of viewing the graph of total links, domain authority and page authority? That was in the previous version. This was very useful to provide a domain comparison in more laymans terms to people/clients.
Loving the new changes, looking forward to playing around with the reports. Having the Social Signals in there is a great help for looking at internal pages. Great job guys
Cool update. It will help us more if the reports could be downloaded directly.
Love what I am seeing....You guys continue to add real value.
Love the social metrics here! Really quick on integrating G+, nice work!
very intresting..powerful tool
Yay, new toys. Played around a bit with the new features and love them. :-) As always, great job seomoz.
Now that YSE is almost dead, this should bring lots of new subscribers to SEOMOZ - congrats on the timing, i guess i'll go PRO soon :)
It's beautiful!
Finally! Checking out the new features now.
I didn't see this post until now, but I logged in this morning to start researching and WOW, real nice! Thank you SEOmoz for providing us with these awesome tools :)
Thus is BIG!
Great work mozzers! I love the changes you have made.
I really like the side by side comparisons and social integration! great update
Good updates! You guys have really been doing a lot lately. Keep up the good work.
Excited to dig in. Looks great. Happy to have PRO access to such a great tool.
Powerful stuff, looking good!
Trying it right now. Thanks!
Loved it Rand :) I'm going to make a portuguese tour for the new OSE!
Whoa! Great look, can't wait to get my hands on it.
Love the social integration. I noticed in Google Webmaster Tools the new section on +1 and all that. Have you seen the impact on search module in there? Tells you how your +1 impacted clicks and whatnot. My guess is the +1's you get (organically, not bought) will soon be impacting rankings.
Just had a brief look, looks impressive with added features :-)
Lookin' good, Pep Pep.
Loving it!
Hey that is great! Can't wait to explore it..:)
Very handy update; its really help for professional SEO link builder. Now a days Social matrics data is very much essential to analyze competitor link profile when and its really great one when social data on same page with other link data .
Overall new update is Awasome!
nice :) now I have everything I need in one place, great job you guys are doing, as always...
Excellent update to an excellent tool. I'm particularly happy about the side-by-side social metrics. It's nice to see how posts have been performing in the social sphere at the same time I monitor other aspects of the site.
Thanks a bunch for this!
huhhh! so niceeee! from strong peoples have strong product!
Much nicer design, and seems to run a little more smoothly, good job!
Another great upgrade. Thanks!
Look great, keep evolving
Great news . OSE had a great futures Now can use very easy.
No doubt, this OSE upgrade is terrific and clearly useful. Thank you all for the amazing job you've done to understand SEO experts needs.
As people mentionned above...please bring back the upload button; this will help us work faster and that's why we love OSE (for time saving)
I too like the new stuff ...
I have an issue, but sent support a question.
This is the best alternative for YSE. Great job you guys are doing. Looking for more updates Thank you.
Looks great.
One small visual issue, the non-active tabs look a bit weird - at least on my Mac in Google Chrome.
But loving the social stuff, great improvement!
Was lucky enough to witness the event live.
The new interface is great, and the chrome add on updates are really helpful too!
Thanks guys.
Very nice and with a day of competitor research looming, well timed to boot! :)
Looks great! Can't wait to have a play!
WOW! Awesome improvements.
Especially fond of the new filters...
The design is amazing! Has a google vibe to it.
Pretty Impressive!
This is awesome! It looks great. Thanks for all the hard work you put into it!
Looks good so far! Great to have a social media monitoring /comparison tool at last! :)
Asking Roger if the campaigns have been automatically updated with fresh Linkscape Data.
Roger, R U there?
+1 on social integration xD
Its been a long time coming. Glad someone is working on it.
