NOTE: this is an announcement of a PRO-only tool. If you're not PRO you can take a peek at what you're missing :)
With the launch of our SEOmoz Labs initiative we have some freedom to quickly launch data and tools which either introduce something new and powerful (like Blogscape) or highlight improvements and mashups of tools and data we've already got. Today we're launching a retooled Backlink Anchor Text Analyzer, powered by Linkscape.
We've long relied on Linkscape for anchor text and backlinks over the traditional tools (such as Yahoo! Site Explorer). With our latest and greatest index update, we have statistical evidence to support that long experience. Recall our excellent, improved and improving external link coverage:
This new tool provides much of the same functionality you've probably grown accustomed to, like anchor text distributions:
Of course, we've also got links, along with a little extra Linkscape data: mozRank passed. This will show you the links which are contributing the most to your global link popularity, along with which are not. In my blog's case, that's my profile page from SEOmoz. But we've also got a few mentions on some other neat blogs.
All of this is powered by the Linkscape index. We're not doing any on-the-fly scraping or crawling, so it's pretty snappy. All the reports I've done so far have come back in under 15 seconds. If you guys know of tools that give you this kind of data faster than that, the engineer in me would love to see them.
There are plenty of surprises here, and lots of opportunity to see how some of your favorite sites (or your competitors) are positioned on the web. You may find there are communities eager to link to content like yours that you are missing out on.
We think that, with unlimited access for PRO members, this tool is a really nice step between the free-for-anyone Linkscape Basic Report and the credit-based advanced report. If you're a PRO member, check it out. If not... well, check out the basic report :)
If Stephen Colbert was a nerdy SEO he might quietly whisper "Sweetness" to this tool.
This is really exceptional Nick - I love how fast it is, the simple interface and the fact that it shows the anchor text and anchor text distribution. It's a big upgrade on the old BL anchor text tool :-)
Also really liking the new update - I always want more, but this last one has dramatically raised the value of all the Linkscape-based tools, IMO.
BTW - Promise I'll write about the new Top 500 domains/pages list soon. Very interesting stuff going on with those rising/falling among the "most-linked."
Wow, this is fast! My last analysis was rendered in 2.54840302467 seconds--talk about precision ;)
Linkscape 101 defines mozRank Passed as the percentage of your mozRank that comes from a specific link. Shouldn't the total equal 100? (for Nick's blog mozRank Passed sum = 12.88)
Also, is a 0.00 mozRank Passed worth something?
Ah yes... the challenges of representing the data.
On this tool mozRank passed is expressed as the mozRank you would have if you ONLY had that link. The total doesn't add up to 100% and it doesn't add up to your total mozRank. You can't just add up mozRank (it's a log scale).
You can think about it like this: having one link is good, maybe giving you a mozRank of 3.5. Nice work! Getting the same quality link again isn't going to suddenly launch you to 7 though. It's a LOT more work to go from 4 to 5 than it was to go from 3 to 4.
Does that make sense? I'll add a note in the tool's help section.
Got it, thanks!
0.00 mozRank passed means either a nofollow link (or some other link that doesn't pass juice) or a link from a low-quality page and/or a page with so many outlinks its juice is diluted (e.g. 0.001 mozRank passed)
Magestic SEO does that in less than 15 seconds :)

Sounds like a really great tool. I'm working on obtaining a pro membership.
What would be super cool is if it gave you a list of strong sites to get a link from. Whether they just be relevant sites, sites your competitors are linked on, etc.
I know you can just do this on your own, but it would be cool to eliminate the research and just pull up the sites. What a time saver.
This is an awesome idea. One way we've used the advanced report is to take a peek at a few competitors. When they all have a few similar links (maybe from the same domain, directories, etc.) that's a great indication that you could get a link too. After all, you hopefully have a high quality service, or valuable content that users want to see.
And now you can use this tool to do the same.
Very nice. I think this tool allows you to draw a lot more information about the value of each link as compared to what other tools give. Keep it coming.
With the whole LinkScape tool I suppose that you are going to upgrade every tool so this is kind of cool.
Linkscape SE next?
Very impressive tool. It's the fastest I've ever used.
This tool is awesome, finally, some clear data on backlinks and anchor text!
Oh yea, it's so gooooooooood to be PRO. :D
It stands to reason that if you want the search engines to be able to index your images, you need to give your images propery descriptions.
So if you're going to take the time to visit, read and leave a comment on a cimplimentary blog, that you take the extra time to provide appropriate anchot text so the search bots can read that as well.
I find myself frequenting blogs that understand this and encourage their readers to leave anchor text comments. I let my readers to leave anchor text comment on my Social Media Marketing Blog.
so far I use combination free tools that I think the best,Google analytic and Siteexplorer, and if I look at this linkcscape back link analyzer.I hope they have "autority"algorithm so that ,I can "authorized my back link that it is ttrully mine and I dont do "spam suspected for that link
Very useful tool for reverse engineering competitor websites and seeking out the most beneficial links for an online campaign.
The speed is impressive...so impressive that you almost think nothing happened until you notice all the data below.
Wow:) This tool rocks - I just entered in a competitors site and got back the results back in just under 2 sec.
I agree with all who suggested above that some sort filter system to keep out the no follow links would be great.
Very nice improvement on the tool. I'll think about things to help you guys enhance it even further ;)
Absolutely keep the feedback coming. This tool is a direct result of feedback we got from a recent survey we did. I saw "Backlinks tool is great" and "Linkscape is great" and thought, "wow, can anyone say mashup?"
Taking the time to answer those really makes a difference! We have an all-hands (if we can get all-hands in the office at the same time) to discuss exactly that feedback. It was overwhelmingly positive, and constructive.
Linkscape!! Everyday I love you just a little bit more... I could go on with the "Saw Red" tune because there are plenty of old link analysis tools I've shot dead thanks to you but why rub salt in old wounds. Great Work!
This is an awesome tool and an excellent quick & dirty complement to linkscape's hardcore data analysis. Love it!
Any chance of adding an option to filter out internal links form the links report? I don't want to add too many features as I know the speed is the main selling point but that one would be handy...
I would also love to see nofollows filtered out or marked (I know we only show them for sites/pages with fewer than 3K total links anyway, but it would be good to know).
Great ideas - both the filtering of internal links and flagging of nofollows. I'll make sure we consider these for the production version of this tool.
This is a good suggestion about filtering/calling out nofollows. And there's a little more subtlety going on here than just "if >3000 links don't show nofollows", but that is correct in many, many cases.
Don't forget the power of the Linkscape Advanced Report. I know many of our users have plenty of credits, so give it a try if you haven't already. Much of the functionality people are asking for here can be found there.
Yeah, did we forget about Linkscape already? We built in all those sorting and filtering controls for the users that demanded 'hardcore' data analysis.
This tool is excellent for showing you who's linking to a padrticular site and the relative amount of link juice that they are passing. With the anchor text right along side, it gives a better understanding as to why a website might be ranking the way it does.
Great job on this one guys!
This is great. How about some pretty graphs?
Awesome work guys, I cannot wait to use this tool, once I finally get around to that PRO membership. The nofollow filter would be a great addition as well.
Great added feature. I can now take that off of my SEOmoz wish list!
Great feature :-)
This is really fantastic. The unlimited access makes it even better :)
This is really great! The speed is terrific and the added MozRank makes it super useful. Thanks!
One possible feature for the future: the ability to sort by anchor text and total the passed mozRank. If you're doing a report on a competitor, you could get a rough idea of what it's taking for them to rank for specific key phrases.
Man, you just want to have all the features from the Linkscape Advanced Report :) Check it out if you haven't already, it has all those features.
But in reality we're working on speeding up the advanced report, and adding some extra value there. And since this is going so well we might move this into production some time soon in place of the old Backlinks tool. But I still haven't read all the comments yet ;)
Thank you very much for sharing ....
the anchor text distribution looks potentially very usefull in figuring out how to vary the anchor text just enough to not seem shady but still be effective and targetted, the moz rank i was never sure of because i dont know what factors go into it therefore dont know... , after reading all the shady stuff that goes on with some seo companies webwise media, places like seomoz and sphinn where web developers can get together and share knowledge are seeming much less dubious and downright wholesome. been looking into some of the big names out there webwise media comes up for "seo services" in the top 5. they get links from all their clients, with anchor text. they use shady software that fakes the google results on the computer it is installed to make it look like the clients in the top 5, and all this other stuff. at least i see the people on here are talking about the real deal, anchor text links, content, i just wish there was more trancparency with clients and advertising sometimes. spread it around, or people are going to rebel, look what happened this election cycle.
SEO wars!? That looks like some nasty stuff going down there.
