The SEOmoz Social Media Marketing Guide has been re-released and is now available. There is both an online version, as well as an expanded CSV version for those with a free SEOmoz account. The guide, which combines the Social Directory with the Social Media Marketing Tactics article, is an updated resource for marketers looking to expand their social media reach or obtain followed links.
Previously, the Social Directory was only available to PRO members, but with the re-release of the guide we have included many of the followed link sources that Jane compiled in the original PRO-only document and we've made the resource available to everyone, with an expanded downloadable version for PRO members.
5 Tips for Using the Social Media Marketing Guide
- Identify Greatest Link Juice Opportunities: Sorting the direct link source sites based on mozRank is a great way to help identify the sites that will pass the most link juice.
- Place Primary Focus on the Top 10: There are dozens of social media sites worth targeting, but you likely don't have the time to target each effectively. So try to focus your initial efforts on the most popular sites before investing time on sites with more niche communities.
- Filter Based on Category: Sorting by category and deleting the sites that are least relevant for your website content is an important way to whittle down your hit list and prioritize your efforts.
- Target Social News Sites with Largest Community: Prioritizing social news sites based on community size is a great way to identify the news sites that could lead to the greatest number of visitors to your site.
- Download Expanded Guide: An expanded CSV version of the guide, which has an additional 25 sites that are not available in the online version, can be downloaded from the "List of 101 Social Media Sites" tab.
If you have questions, feedback or want to share additional resources, feel free to do so in the comments on this post.
Hey, This is awesome. I really liked it .
Primary Value & Marketing tips are realy helpful to any who is new & wish to explore the sites at its full potential.
Thank you so much SEOMoz. You guys always rock :)
Hi...
I'd like to suggest some social media sites for the ones who need to social geo-target.
Viadeo which is a sort of Linkedin that is especially strong in France
Data: PR 6 - mR 5.21 - mT 5.33 - DmR 6.35 - DmT 6.29
Meneame which is a sort of Digg for Spain (and castillan speaking countries)
Data: PR 7 - mR 6.55 - mT 6.23 - DmR 6.69 - DmT 6.71
Tuenti which is a spanish Facebook and the most serious competitor to Facebook in Spain especially between teens
Data: PR 3 - mR 6.06 - mT 5.88 - DmR 5.74 - DmT 5.72
OkNotizie an italian mix between Digg and Reddit
Data: PR 7 - mR 5.53 - mT 5.3 - DmR 5.37 - DmT 5.31
All the list in the new guide is fantastic... just remember that not all the Mozzers are working in AngloSaxon world ;-)
I think Menéame is on there at #75.
Thanks a lot for this list & Idea about market by country I will really like to use this...
Perfect timing! This list will definitely come in handy as I'm starting a new position in two weeks where Social Media Marketing will be the focus of my position.
While I think this is all well and good, I'd like to point out a certain detail that wasn't clear to me at first.
Don't build a social network on a site just because it has a lot of MOZrank. If your market isn't there, you'll just end up talking to yourself.
The only disagreement I'd have with that strategy is on major networks - YouTube, Facebook, Twitter, etc. You at least want to have a presence there so no one else captures your name or leverages their brand in your space before you do. Great point, though.
Great list. I chuckled when I saw that you nofollowed the Wikipedia link:)
Do unto others... :-)
It's company policy.
Citation please.
This is a welcome update to the Social Media article posted eons ago, hehehe. I'll check it out later to see what I'm missing, if any. Keep up the good work guys.
Sam,
Can you explain any reasons why specific sites would have been left off such as www.CarDomain.com? Thousand's of profiles with strong profile rankings and self-publishing abilities.
We really tried to provide the most actionable list possible. So hopefully this version of the guide is a helpful tool for folks looking to market themselves using social media.
That said, it's certainly not "the definitive guide to..." . Hopefully it's useful, but there are literally hundreds of CarDomain-esque sites out there with relatively authoritaive domains and hundreds of thousands of monthly visitors.
So I'm glad really glad you raised this point. It's an important one. I would encourage people to think of this list as a great place to start, but also to add to their lists. Perhaps export the CSV and build a customized version that's most useful for your business.
This type of customized, industry specfic list would likely not only be helpful for you, but to other folks in your inudstry. And it'd probably make for a great piece of content for your own blog. After all, I am sure the car industry (and others) have dozens of great industry specifc sites worth targeting.
Awesome to see the new guide come out.
BTW, for those of us doing social media looking for a name that is available across many social media sites, I use https://namechk.com/. Nice tool for those who don't already know about it..
Thumbs up for the link: https://namechk.com
I love it. Thanks! Great stats organized very easily for those non-interenet savvy to understand. Very useful.
i've been waiting for the updated version of this. good job guys!
the 1st "guide" on the list to catch my eye was the one for care2 since i'm working with a non profit right now. but, umm...is that link correct?
Interesting... the Care2 guide they had was a pretty good one, but the domain registration for the site it was on (issuemarketing.com) has expired in the last couple weeks. (The domain is now for sale, but given the link profile of the domian, GoDaddy is probably getting a bit greedy with their $5,000 price tag.)
I will dig deeper and see if we can find another solid Care2 guide, but the Wikipedia page (though admittedly not a fabulous guide) at least has reasonable background info on Care2.
(NOTE: If anyone has experience using Care2 and wants to put together a great post on the subject, we'd be happy to swap out the link to issuemarketing for a link to your post.)
Sam,
Is Treehugger's links only by posting on the forum? I can't find any other way.
A great guide and could definitely come in handy for me. Will have to download it and have a proper look through all the information. Thanks for sharing this with us.
I think the biggest mistake a alot of companies make with SMO is they write legal copy when they address their audience. I understand there are things that can and can't be said but the whole point or social goal is to connect and communicate with the people who follow you.
Very true. Sounding like sales copy is the fastest way to get 'de-friended'
SEOmoz Social Media Marketting Guide will be great help for SEO's.Because through this they can explore new things and also can apply to their work.
Nice, another sweet guide to add to my stash. I think I may combine all of SEOmoz's cheat sheets and guides into one text book to train my internal staff with. Yes, I think I'll do just that.
Is the 250,000 million members (as of July 2009) for Facebook, as stated on the image link, correct?
There is debate over this number but you will find several sources say that Facebook has 250,000 million members and over 800 million searches per month and something like 1 billion 100 million visits per month (https://blog.compete.com/2009/02/09/facebook-myspace-twitter-social-network/) The numbers are staggering. Another interesting fact as we work with a Private Equity firm who hears several ideas a week for social network websites; unless you have 5 million visits a month they consider the idea a pipe dream.
*Please note that this information has been take from several sources I have read or hearsay please do not bet the farm on them.
I find that Facebook member number next to impossible to believe and think that if it is sourced at various places online, they all derived the number from one erroneous source and did no fact checking of their own. 250,000 million is 250 billion members, which equals over 38 profiles for every person on the planet. 800 million searches a month, sure, I can believe that, just as I can believe over a billion visits per month. I cannot believe 250 billion profiles, however.
Good stuff, thanks for these guides seomoz. Very helpful.
link bait...
oh i want the badge "social media expert"
Nice thanks, although it comes at a time when I was about to buy the social media optimization strategies guide.
Would this guide still have some value alongside this or would most of the content in that paper be covered here?
Just wanted to check before buying?
where can I find the "expanded downloadable version for PRO members"?
If you click the second tab half way down the page there is a tiny link off to the right. Click it. You'll be prompted to log in if you're not. If you are logged in it might try to open the .CSV in another tab or just download it.
I just played around with the tool and I love it! I really like the search functionality, which makes it easier to find out the ones that are interesting for me to use for the special needs that my clients might have! I will definitely tweet about it!
Maria
I am certainly biased (as co-founder) but I might suggest Tip'd for inclusion -- we're closing in on 20,000 members, we pass linkjuice (only for stories that hit FP of course), and our traffic levels compare favorably with many of the others on the list: https://siteanalytics.compete.com/tipd.com+socialpicks.com+tweako.com/
Beautiful presentation of the list btw...
Alas ! This is what i've been waiting for, i specialize in SMO and this is a nice piece of information i can use, rather going on with each n every SMSite on the web.
Good Post..
Thank you for updating this list, I will be able to leverage some of this information for a business case I am currently working on.
Perhaps I'm blind but where is the expanded CSV version for those with a free SEOmoz account?
I tried looking for this to answer your question but I must also be blind.
Click the second tab half way down the page. There is a tiny link on the right. It will prompt you to log in if you're not already.
Thanks Timmy. For anyone else that has problems here it is:
For a newbie like me, what does
DmR:9.22DmT:8.7Rankings mean?
DmR - this is Domain mozRank, which essentially calculates a PageRank-like algorithm of link popularity on a domain-wide scale. You can think of it as a way to say "this domain is more-linked-to and popular than this other domain."
DmT - similar to DmR, but specifically measuring trustworthiness -how high quality are the sites and pages that link to pages on this domain.
Since only one primary value is listed, do any of the sites listed have a close-second value that is worth noting?
Also, how many thousands of users per little yellow guy?
A lot of them do - I think we'll be exploring those much more in another in-depth article that concentrates on the top sites in the future. As for the little yellow guys -it's more a line of distinction between hundreds of millions, tens of millions, millions, hundreds of thousands and tens of thousands of users (I think - Sam can correct me if I'm wrong).
Two great points, Sarah.
1) Primary vs. Secondary Value -- Many of the sites have overlap. What we've done is categorize primary value, and not call a site a direct link source unless we could confirm nofollow links, but your point is a good one: Just because a site is a direct link source doesn't mean it's not also a site where you can create a strong profile or promote content. Think of these as ways to filter your hitlist, not as mutually exlusive attributes. There certainly is overlap.
2) Users Per Yellow Guy -- These are tiers, really. They are largely based on traffic volume, but site membership and user activity also contribute to the community size score. So think orders of magnitude, not exact visitor counts. For example, according to Compete Facebook had ~122 million visitors last month and Digg had ~44 million. If the little yellow guys were based on traffic volume, FB would be 3x higher, but as both Facebook & Digg are orders of magnitude higher than those w/fewer yellow guys, they each have the same score. In other words, the scale is relative. So think of community scores as tiers for sorting, not a reflection of exact visitor counts.
I am a little surprised that YouTube isn't higher. I believe YouTube has more searches per day than Yahoo! (corrected me if I am wrong) and it provides a greater professional showcase. Plus it doesn't require the upkeep of a face book or twitter.
Thanks guys. Haven't read the updated report yet but would be good to include strategies for ranking for branded searches for these sites. e.g. Wikipedia, Youtube, Facebook, flickr, etc.. ranking below your main site for a branded search results, great for ORM!
