Ladies and Gentlemen, it has been a tremendously exciting year here at SEOmoz. While our burgeoning engineering team is toiling away on some amazing new stuff, we've been busy plotting the future of Moz. Today, I'm excited to announce we've taken one big step toward that goal with the acquisition of GetListed, and the addition of David Mihm to the SEOmoz team.
(David and I celebrate at the Mozplex, while our data PM, Tela, photobombs)
David and I have known each other a long time - since 2005! - and we've long been passionate about the same big problem - that web marketing, particular on inbound channels, is far too inaccessible and poorly understood by small, local businesses. As Moz has expanded our mission, we've been in talks with David since 2011 about combining forces to take on this challenge.
As part of the acquisition, we're releasing the following reverse ransom note to the Internet on behalf of small businesses:
The letters are made up of signs from local businesses in Portland and Seattle, our respective home towns, and we had a lot of fun putting them together (special thanks to Derric Wise from Moz, who helped make this happen). You can see the official press release here, and a larger version of the ransom note here.
While I can't be 100% transparent about all our plans for the future of GetListed and our entry into the local space (partially because we haven't cemented it all quite yet), I do want to provide as much detail as possible:
- David has officially joined the SEOmoz team, while his co-founder Chris Tanger will be contracting and assisting with the transition to the next version of the product. They will both be staying in their respective home towns of Portland, OR and Chicago, IL.
- The current GetListed.org website and product functionality will remain completely free as it is today for at least the next 4-6 months.
- In Q2 of 2013, we hope to release a new version of the product focused on helping local, small business owners and the consultants/marketers who frequently work with them to better appear in and optimize their online presence on major search engines and local portals.
- Our long term goal is to provide software on the web and possibly in a mobile app that helps owners and marketers get a simple, but detailed overview of how they're performing in the local search ecosystem, what actions they should take to help their marketing, and how they compare against their competition. These goals may expand and will certainly get more fleshed out as we take products through user testing and release.
- David's personal site is remaining personal, though we encourage everyone interested in local inbound marketing to check out the excellent resources there - the Local Search Ranking Factors and David's blog on Local SEO.
- Local U is remaining a separate entity, though we hope to be able to support and sponsor some of their excellent events going forward, and David plans to keep speaking/participating in some of these.
- The acquisition technically wrapped up a couple weeks back, and the total price was in the ~$3million range including cash and SEOmoz stock.
Moving forward, we've got a lot of work to do, including hiring some new team members to help support our growth into Local and David's ambitious and admirable plans. We also might be looking to open a new office in Portland, where Galen & Peter from Followerwonk are also based, (I like the idea to call it "Mozlandia") in 2013, so be on the lookout!
If you haven't already, I'd urge you to join the more than 2 million local businesses that have used GetListed to help understand and optimize their presence online:
A huge congratulations and a ton of gratitude to David and Chris - you guys have built something remarkable.
Finally, a big thanks to all the local businesses, whose signage we used in our ransom note:
Ace Hotel, Beast, Beecher's Handmade Cheese, Bishop's Barber Shops, Brave Horse Tavern, Bunk Sandwiches, Caffé D'arte, Caffé Vita Coffee Roasting Co., Caffe Ladro, Cherry Street Coffee, Courier Coffee Roasters, Delicatus, Deschutes Brewery, Dick’s Drive-In, Elephant Car Wash, Espresso Vivace, Evo, Fran’s Chocolates, Grand Central Bakery, Homegrown, Julia's, Kell's Pub, Kenny & Zuke's, Lola's, McMenamins, Mississippi Studios, Molly Moon's Ice Cream, Neptune Coffee, Odd Fellows, Ox, Pike Place Market, Podnah's Pit, Pok Pok Thai, Powell's Books, Quinn's Pub, Red Light Vintage & Costume, Red Mill Burger, Rogue Ales, Rudy's Barbershop, Salt and Straw, Scarecrow Video, Schnitzer Concert Hall, Serious Pie, Skillet Street Food, Snowboard Connection, Spirit of 77, Stumptown Coffee Roasters, Tasty N Sons, The Crab Pot, The Nines, The Pink Door, Voodoo Doughnut
If/when you're in Seattle or Portland, you should give some of these terrific spots a try!
Super mega kudos for this second acquisition...
Now Moz has:
and you, Rand, starts for the first talking about mobile apps...
If I know you well, you are already digging into Mobile Marketing opportunities to complete the (SEO) SO.LO.MO. platform for web marketers :)
We've been looking at a lot of mobile stuff, but I'm struggling on how inbound marketing on mobile is unique from desktop/laptop. Other than being more location aware, we still use all the same services (excluding app stores, but branding is the primary driver there).
I have been impressed with https://www.mobiledevhq.com/ (a Seattle Techstars company)
Yes... but also Apps Analytics, which is a field that may have a great importance in some industries.
Congrats! This is such great news for local. Give David an engineering team to work with, and it's going to be awesome! I can't wait to see what you come up with.
I am really excited about this. Getlisted will continue to be in good hands and I am excited about what that could mean for the local search tool space.
I love the release letter!
Congrats guys! I'm going to go ahead and offer, as an alternative for a name, MozPDXPlex. It's available!
Couldn't have happened to two better people. Congrats to David and Rand and everyone at SEOmoz!
Congratulations, great acquisition !
By looking at the picture, it seems that both parts are happy.
Especially the tattooed guy behind you :D
Honestly, I gangman danced after reading this. Can't wait to see what lies beneath the curtain!
Haha yeh i guess the tattooed guy is trying to point to something which did not get captured in this picture :D !! Any guesses ?
Great news. Congrats to all.
David - couldn't have happened to a nicer guy. Great work.
Happy :)
Big CONGRATULATIONS to both of you!
Mozlandia - Love it!
The dream of the 1890s is already clearly alive and well in my facial grooming for Movember :-)
Wow, this is just the most amazing news! My jaw literally dropped. David & Rand, I am excited beyond belief for both of you. Like you, Rand, I have had the pleasure of knowing David for years and have always been such a fan of his talents and today's news is like a happy ending (and a fabulous new beginning) to seeing this remarkable fellow at work in Local! Congratulations to you both and I call this acquisition an utterly brilliant move!
This is awesome news. Congrats to everyone involved. As a company that works primarily with small-medium local businesses, both SEOmoz and GetListed have been a huge asses to us and our clients.
I gotta give this one a thumbs up. "asses". :)
LOL!
Lol.
Congrats guys...
I hope this is a signal of an impending rank tracker update that utilizes localized IP addresses and location tagging in order to pull localized rankings for head terms? That would certainly make Moz even more indispensable for our local-focused clients...
I just want to add big congrats from Team Eminent SEO! We are super stoked to see more tools integrated into the already awesome SEOmoz pro toolset.
P.S. Love the ransom note and that you actually took letters from real business signs. Very creative.
Congratulations! David is an awesome guy (he designed my website!) and a wonderful addition to the Moz team!
Congrats, sounds like a logical addition to SEOmoz.
I hope one of your first priorities is to expand the GetListed functionality to other countries besides the US, UK and Canada.
I've been wanting to use this tool many times but I'm based in Australia and so are most of my clients. As a PRO member, I hope your acquisition will prove to be as useful to me as it may be to your members in North America and the UK.
CongraIations SEOMoz and David Mihm. I should not be surprised; Great Move! David Mihm is the highest authority in local search; this move ensures that Moz's tracking software is going to be effective and value driven. I look forward to seeing the software created in the PNW this year. Moz in Portland, Fun. I'm not jealous at all.
Keep up the awesomeness.
Thank yoU.
I really hope they can develop a solid local search tracking and reporting product.
That is a huge opportunity for MOZ, a winner for David, and a potential great opportunity for expanding your skill sets to assist local smb's and those who service local businesses. David is clearly one of the more articulate and thought leaders with regard to local SEO and a good man to boot.
Congrats to both of you and good luck moving forward.
Wonderful news for us SEO practitioners....David will add real local value and I can't wait to see how getListed morphs....
Kudos to David and Rand! Nicely done lads!
:-)
Congrats, hopefully you will be releasing more tips/tools for us in the UK?
Great choice on an acquisition! Very cool. I'm sure you'll release all the news and bits in good time, but I'll pose the question anyway... How does this affect PRO accounts? Regardless - applause, applause, and congratulations on the merge!
Holy smokes. This is big time. Congrats to all!
Great news - SEOmoz proved it again that it's worth being a pro member.
I have to confess afterwards I had a 2nd thought and this was: "Of course only US, Canada and GB" are concerned (regarding getlisted.org). Though the cooperation with David and its team is will be a great advantage of the whole worldwide community anyway.
Two questions to Rand or David:
1) Are there any plans to cover the rest of world / Europe (apart GB) with getlisted.org?
2) Christmas is close by so ...: It would be great if you could succeed in getting e.g. a Google+ Local responsible for the SEOmoz community.
I think thousands of people become desperate with that buggy Places / G.+ Local mess and would need help.
I have to emphasize here Mike Blumenthal who is an amazing help for many people out there - personally and with his great blog.
Jade Wang, the community manager of Google Plus Local is doing a great job, too - but I guess one person for that huge item is too less.
At least I can dream of such a wish ;-). But in the future SEOmoz proved that it can do really magic things.
I second this!
WOW! Huge news! Congrats to David, Rand, rest of team AND all the consultants and SMBs that are going to benefit from this brilliant union.
So excited to see SEOmoz will be having an increased focus on Local. Maybe now I'll finally join this fine community.;-)
COngrats moz and getlisted team, A big hug for a sweet roger :)
Congrats guys! How did you put the ransom note together? Did you take individual pictures of each sign in Portland/Seattle and then cut out the letters and paste them in with Photoshop?
Pretty much! Although our art director, Derric, used some font technology to map letters to the cutouts we created so it would be more scalable to build the note :-)
Woooaaahhh!!!!
It's awsome!!!!
Congrats!!!
This is FANTASTIC news for local SEO...an area in dire need of this type of merger. Very excited to see what transpires... *gets cc ready for pro membership once again*
Congratulations to David, Chris and the entire team.
I have question Rand. Is the GetListed service is limited to certain countries? Because we don't have Zip codes here in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. Can we able to use the service?
Right now it's US, UK, and Canada. We're working on a rebuild of some systems and some additional functionality first, but then will be adding multi-country support in the future.
Congrats Both of you SEOMoz And GetListed Team, I am waiting for in India. Rand I hope so it will come in India next upcoming Moths
Bottles up!Great to hear you are ever-expanding.
Exciting News! Congratulations to the MozTeam and David. I am so looking forward to seeing what this awesome partnership will bring.
Congratulations. I have been using getlisted.org for sometime. It will be nice to have more integration into the SEOmoz dashboard.
Congrats to David and Rand, as well as the rest of the Moz crew, for a great match!
Great acquisition. Keep feeding the Mozmonster! Every addition makes SEOMoz even more amazing!
CONGRATS Guys!
Congrats, well done. :)
Does GetListed work for businesses outside the USA? Just gave it a go for a UK company but got back: "5 Digit U.S. zip code example: 60611" ??
Go to https://uk.getlisted.org/ for the UK based version.
Heh thanks for the URL. :)
A big big congrats Moz and David.Kudos to both of you!
Great achievement for sure of Seomoz community. First was Followerwonk and now GetListed. Congrats to both of them and David is a dark horse for sure...:)
Great news for local busineses in the US, not really helpful if you live anywhere else in the world!!
Congrats guys!
One suggestion: a transcript of the ransom note would be useful, as it's currently difficult to read (IMO only) and it'd make it easier/better to quote (if one were to quote it in another article).
As an aside, I also like how Tela has invented link building tactic #5,306,174: photobomb. Good work, Tela! :-)
Well done. Mr. Mihm is to my mind the the thought leader in local search.
WOW! Congrats Rand on your ever-growing exciting business. It's so much fun to read about what you're up to.
Congratulations Moz & David, this is excellent news! We wish you the best with this and are excited to see the growth and evolution through your partnership.
Cheers!
Congrats to all!
Having just recently spent the last hour with GetListed.com it looks like the kind of stuff that will fit in nicely with the SEOmoz crew.
Just wanted to say congrats and happy for the acquisition! GetListed is a fantastic service that blends right into SEOMoz's core goals: improve business presence on the web.
Good news - hopefully this will mean the UK version of getlisted.org will be upgraded to make it into a useful product.
(Currently Whitespark is the only show in town for researching local citations.)
Congrats guys! Hadn't heard of GetListed before but it is great to see 'local' being added to the SEOmoz tools. Checked it out and it looks great. Can't wait to get stuck in!
Veels geluk!
That's Afrikaans for "Congrats!" :)
Do you have plans for making GetListed globally available?
AFAIK its US, UK and Canada only?
Congratulations... Its a good buy
Great! Now please fix it. The site never worked because its breakdown of all telephone variations in its searches has been broken for years (with paren, with dashes, with nothing). I have never put in a company and gotten a correct result. It always says I am missing citations that I can then find manually. This can't be that hard!
SEOmoz and GetListed = match made in heaven for all local SEOs out there. Congrats to Rand, David and the team. Looking forward to testing the new tool!
Congrats Rand and David,
Very exciting development. All the best.
Such an exciting edition to the Moz family!
UK too please! :)
Any plans of adding Australia?
Right now, we're USA only. We'll be sure to make announcements when the time comes to expand to other countries!
It's fantastic news and it will be exciting to see what new tools are developed for the Local SEOs amongst us. I've always associated SEOMoz with the "larger market space" of SEO rather than local. There are certainly a lot of fantastic Local SEO tools out there, such as BrightLocal, Whitespark Local Citation Finder and Places Scout. However, if you guys add on some local features to your software, that could make things interesting!
Congrats for both of you
Looking forward for getlisted to enable service in Indonesia :)
We have used Get Listed for years and have always been frustrated with its accuracy in regard to percentage completion. So, we are beyond excited to see you acquire this service. We cant wait to see what 2013 holds for local optimization!
Congratulations to the both of you.
As i just checkd I don't believe getlisted.org is very interesting for businesses outside the US/Canada or the UK at this very moment right?
Still looking forward for future developments.
Kind regards
Jarno
Congrats to SEOmoz team. Really excited to see this. Looking forward to see new local tools from your team!
Getlisted.org is cool.. I always drool over it as for me and my clients who are based at India, it's of no use.
So if you can enhance it into something which can be used internationally, then it will be super awesome!
Congratulations to SEOmoz team. I'm currently using the getlisted tool
Great news,
Will GetListed include Australia in the near future?
This is awesome! I love when great gets better.
That's so weird! Just this morning I was thinking I should contact you guys to get help with a client's local listing.
LOVE the ransom note!!!
Congrats guys... I just really wish that GetListed supported more than just USA.... when are the plans to roll this out world wide?
anything about india?
¡Felicidades Rand!Any plan to open a "Local Office" outside US and doing some "Spanish" version of the software involved? :)
Excellent news - congratulations David! Even more congrats to SEOmoz for landing David. I have absolutely nothing to do with this but I'm beaming with pride anyway. This is awesome.
Congratulation to both of you.
I was on a call with Mike Blumenthal a few days ago right after he posted this great news to his Blog. I think next to the guys in the picture, he was the most excited. (He was kind enough to help us with a tricky "local" issue.) And yes, thats a bit of a name drop.
I can not tell you how exciting this is to us, and I am sure the entire Local SEO community. Some one asked me a few years ago how many searches are local, and my answer was, all local searches are local.
I can not wait to see what this news means in terms of new ideas, new services and new information! Congrats on a very smart move.
Congrats, everyone! I can't wait to see more SEOMoz presence in Portland! Mozlandia FTW!
Very nice- congrats!
Can't wait to see the innovation!
Nice! Looking forward to seeing how the tools evolve and benefit us all. Great merger. Roll'em up SEO Moz, because it appears the other players that could have a run at acquiring aren't doing it. I've often felt there are too many tools that overlap and are spread out among too many places.
Congrats Guys
We helped host a getlisted.org workshop here in Denver a couple years ago and thought it was one of the best conferences I've been to in the search industry. I was just on getlisted.org a half hour ago with a client so I love the site and use it regularly. Good job SEOMOZ and David!
Congratulations SEOmoz.
Hope to see this tool be expanded beyond the US and Canada, us South African's could do with this :-)
@Rand, I like the Mozlandia concept! I think I might have given you that idea the other day in a Tweet or something when you were in Portland (Portlandia).
I am happy to hear that you are growing your company; honestly.
This acquisition creates A LOT of value for the monthly subscription. WebApp, OSE, Followerwonk, GetListed, and way more!
You get a big WOOT WOOT from me!
Edit (added):
I really hope this is for us subscribers!
Wow, what a great move for everyone involved. Congratulations to all.
Congrates David and Rand! You guys scored a real gem with scoring David. He represents the local SEO community well. I can't wait to see what you all come up with in the local space. Hope GetListed can make it to Toronto some time.
I am excited to see some more content and hopefully tools on Local SEO. Local/Places is a mess right now!
Adding David to the already awesome team is fantastic news - but am I right in thinking that GetListed in its current form only caters for the US audience? Any thoughts on providing for your international customers?
Congrats guys. Love it when two of our favorites join forces. Great news that SEOmoz is giving this level of focus to local.
Congrats Rand and team!
This is a great move...as a local SEO I am very excited.
I like the link love you showed those local businesses at the end of the post!
David Mihm is a local SEO stud! Congrats guys!
Great news! I had the pleasure of Dave (sounds very wrong but isn't mean that way) at SearchLove in London and was very impressed so I'm sure he'll make an amazing addition :)
-Matt
This is incredible! This sure makes me want to move to Portland. Hmmm...how can I present this to my wife and kids?
Congrats! I just heard David speak today at BlueglassX, and he's a massive addition to the SEOMoz family - good luck guys and looking forward to using local tools you're gonna build out!
Great News - Looks like with all the excitement and traction that this announcement caused - it was too much for getlisted.org's servers.
Congrats! getlisted down atm - how much traffic are you sending :)
Congratulations on the acquisition.
Seems like us not-yet-customers should swiftly jump aboard to be grandfathered during the next pricing increase. :-)
This is amazing! I'm pumped!
That's great news for both business and all of your customers, congratulations!
Congratulations guys - looking forward to seeing what your partnership brings. And love the ransom note, by the way!
Congratulation to both David and Rand. Also best wishes for new office in Portland. Now Getlisted will be more popular i know. After adding SEOMOZ flavor, "getlisted" will become a ultimate choice for businesses operating locally.
Please add Australia as a version soon! I see US/CAN/UK. I would love to use this for our local biz.
Getting more global is definitely in the long-term plans, but it might be a few months. Every country has such different sources!
If you need anything I may have, just let me know.
hmmm...perhaps a research trip to Australia is needed?
I know a gorgeous cliff house that would provide a great base for a war council when you've finished your information gathering! ;)
Congrats on the acquisition news...just keeps getting bigger and better.
Sha
congratulations!!!
A match made on the interwebs. Congrats David and SEOmoz! Looking forward to your local product and will be one of the first to try it.
Congratulation!
Awesome acquisition! Have great respect for David. I've used GetListed--wonderful service. SEOmoz keeps getting better and better! Happy dance!
Congo to SEOMoz!
It will surely rock in 2013 with additional feature at SEOmoz!
Congratulation to you both. SEOmoz. go ahead
This is great! I had not heard of GetListed but will now check them out. Congrats to both SEOMoz and GetListed :)
:) Congrats to SEOMoz team.
David is the only name one can come up when talking about local SEO. I love David's approach on local but somehow may be because David is not too much open on blogs and social media many people don't know much about him... i guess being the part of SEOmoz its a great chance for us as a community member to learn more about David and Local SEO.
I like the concept of Mozlandia!
Congrats to both SEOMoz and GetListed! I'm sure this will be a wonderful relationship moving forward into 2013! I can't wait!
I am extremely stoked to see what is to come from this acquisition. Congrats to Rand and Dave! But just so you both know, local SEOs will be expecting more from you, so surprise with some new awesome features! :)
Congrats to the SEOMoz team and to David! Will be following the progress of GetListed closely. Here is hoping that your plans for a mobile app come to fruition!
Great acquisition Rand and team... David is a true professional who will help us all immensely.
Such great news! Couldn't happen to a nicer / harder working guy as well. Really excited to see what comes to local search from a David + Moz team perspective.
A huge congratulations to SEOmoz, Rand and David Mihm. I'm proud to see the happening and wish you good vibes!
Best,
Fabio
Simply amazing - the best local SEO expert joining the best SEO company out there. Looking forward to see more local search integration into SEOmoz Pro!
Congrats guys! Yes...think I coined 'Mozlandia' on twitter back in August...it needs to happen soon!! Followerwonk, GetListed, and SEOmoz will rock the PDX.
Can't wait for the next iteration of GetListed
Congrats and happy days ahead I am addicted to you guys;) I am becoming better and better each day!! and its all thanks to the Moz team and all those with great knowledgeable comments thanks again look forward to the ride....broom broom screech and skids....
Great news!
But who's the guy with the tattoos in the picture pointing at you guys?
If he was the one sending a ransom note... I might be afraid...
;-)
Very cool and congrats!
David is "representing" Portland proudly.
This is great news. I hope that GetListed continues to provide free services to local businesses, and that SEOmoz simply adds marketing agency-related enhancements for Pro subscribers. For example, multi-account management would be great for agencies with paid subscriptions; still I'd like to see GetListed continue to offer free tools to all the DIY mom-and-pop shops.
Many Many Congratulation David and SEOmoz !!! :)
I think I understand the reason for this move, but I'm not in love with it.
The getlisted.org software is not the best. Whitespark has a far superior product, even if it doesn't look as pretty. It's clear that Rand & Co is aware of this, since they're already talking about creating more/better software in this very post.
I suspect that this was mostly about buying getlisted.orgs customers. $3M for 2M customers = $1.50 per customer.
I am of course excited about this if it's going to bring me some added value during my SEOMoz Pro subscription. Specifically, if SEOMoz can create more robust Local Search software solutions
Micah, I don't think SEOMOZ bought it only for the cash value. I personally don't care if that was the aim. "If" it is was, it's all about business in the end. I have watched MOZ grow in the past 2 years and I am happy to remain as a subscriber. WebApp + Followerwonk + OSE + GetListed = long term subsrcibers.
I like Darren's tool too - but it's a bit different from GetListed (focused on competitive citation discovery vs. listing checks/verification). There's a bunch of reasons we made the acquisition - David himself, the customer base and popularity, the relationships with the local data providers, etc. And yes - we do plan to bring more robust and scalable software to the space.
I'm looking forward to the software.
To be clear, I'm not ragging on you, even if the reason for the acquisition was 100% about buying the customers. $1.50 per customer is quite good. It just doesn't hold any appeal to me as an SEOMoz client. I'm sure it would if I were an SEOMoz shareholder.
Rand whats the next Acquisition on the charts :) ? Get something cool in the mobile space related to SEO ...
Do you have a road map for SEO moz in the months and years to come in terms of where you plan to take it ?
