How does a person become successful in the world of SEO? I wish I could tell you all the secrets but if I knew them, I would be sitting on a beach in Tahiti, sipping mai tais, instead of writing this post. About a year ago I ran across a video of Richard St. John giving a quick 3 minute presentation at TED about the 8 secrets of success and started to wonder if those same 8 secrets where true within the SEO industry. Take 3 minutes, watch the video and think about how you can implement his secrets into your SEO work and then read my take on his secrets related to SEO.
8 Secrets of Success Within SEO
Business Practices
The author's views are entirely his or her own (excluding the unlikely event of hypnosis) and may not always reflect the views of Moz.
The SEO is industry is full of successful people whose passion for SEO is unbelievable. Take Rhea Drysdale for example, she spent thousands of dollars of her own money to help protect the industry from someone that tried to trademark the term "SEO". that could have affected the whole industry. Rhea isn’t the only one with an intense passion for the SEO industry but she is the most recent example. How does your passion for SEO rate compared to the industry leaders? SEOmoz users have a huge passion for SEO and a large number of them are at the top of the top ranked user list.
Hard work is one secret that every SEO will tell you is true, things don’t come easy in this industry. SEO doesn’t happen overnight and isn’t something just anyone can do, it takes someone who enjoys diving into link reports, analytics, and writing reports to clients. SEO’s are a hard working bunch and to be successful you need to put a bit of sweat into your projects. Are you spending your fair share of time invested in your SEO techniques, if not, imagine if you were putting your full potential into all your project, the results could be endless! Prioritize your projects and put more effort into those that will give the most in return.
Practice, practice, practice – to become successful at SEO you need to practice everything you read in real world situations. Since SEO is ever changing, you need to continue to practice the techniques you have acquired and make sure those techniques are still valid and will work with your current project. Without practicing of SEO techniques we still might be stuffing our meta keywords tag, which is a scary thought. Setup a domain and website where you can test your theories and explore the results without effecting your clients websites.
Successful SEOs are always coming up with new ideas! Richards gave some great tips on how to come up with ideas, they included: listen, observe, be curious, ask questions, problem solve, and make connections. All of those things can be done in communities like the one here at SEOmoz, get out there and start making those connections and asking questions. Making comments on blog posts is a great way to start making connections or even creating your own YOUmoz post with techniques you use.
Focus on the good techniques that are going to make your clients achieve results. Some of us are spread too thin working on web design, web development, and many of the other things that go into creating a successful website. Having the ability to focus all your energy into just SEO can really help you succeed within the industry or help you achieve your SEO goals. This might be easier for people in large organization who have co-workers who can focus on the other needs of the clients. If you don't have the man power to focus on just one topic make sure you are part of a community that shares their techniques and tips.
In the video Richard talks about how it’s not always easy to push yourself but that’s why they invented mothers. Personally my mother wouldn’t know what SEO is and would have no idea how to push me to be better at it. I’ve found that clients are always going to be pushy when it comes to rankings and that can be who pushes you to educate yourself on the newest techniques within the SEO industry and help you and them succeed.
Serve your clients something of value and not just empty promises like some of the shady emails your clients receive. Happy clients will lead to great referrals and increase your bottom line. Along with serving them great results in the SERPs, provide them with some useful knowledge to help them understand why SEO is important to continue to do and not just a onetime thing. Increases you clients knowledge about the SEO process will reduce questions and concerns in the long run.
Persistence is one of the most important tips for success as an SEO. I bet almost every successful SEO had a few failures in their SEO life but they kept moving forward and didn’t let it slow them down. Richard made a great acronym for the word “CRAP” that will help you persist through some of the C.R.A.P. out there. Don’t let one speed bump slow you down, put your head down and continue to grind forward. Nothing feels better than seeing something you have worked really hard on meet the goals you set down, though lessons can always be learned from your failures.
What do you think helps people become successfully in the SEO industry? What are the secrets to your success in this industry and what can a newbie do to get started on the right foot? We would like to hear what you think makes people successful in this industry and what you consider when calling a person successful in SEO.
Great post and great visual... It's funny to see again the Rex photo in a post in SEOmoz (just check YOUmoz).
And you gave a new meaning to the "Holy Crap" exclamation... now I will use it without fearing to soud mean.
On a more serious note, the 8 points are perfect, but there's a 9th behind all of them: Equilibrium (aka: Balance).
In order to fullfill all the 8 rules of success you must
Ciao!
You really nailed it on the head here. The 9th point makes perfect sense, especially in this industry!
I'm glad you agree.
It's something I've learn with time and experience and that can be applied to almost every field in life (as your 8 points).
And it's something that the Ancients already knew, as my old professor of latin was always predicating to my rebelious and passionate class.
Now listen Gianluca, after comments like this your public demands YOUmoz posts from you! Look at the thumbs up you're getting! C'mon dude, you know you have to do it!
Working on it.... but remember it doesn't depends on me, but if what I write is considered useful by the SEOmoz staff.
But where did you disappear these last days? Personally, I missed your witty comments.
From the #4, i know practice is more imporant not only just have idea.
Rand looks hawt in that shirt :D
OMG... is this really Rand? :)
Thumbs up for Rand in a sexy shirt! :P
Beside this was an Impressive talk from Richard St. John
I totally agree with you! Rand is an SEO Chick!!
Gee Casey, I'm like, really late to the party, and everyone has already said everything there is to say...but I've never let that stop my rambling before so why start now :)
The good news:
1) You get a thumbs up just for having a TED video
2) You get a thumbs up for a great inaugural post
The bad news:
3) You get a thumbs down for not being PC with Sly. So his wife always has a fire extinguisher in hand when his birthday cake comes out. So he can remember voting for Barry Goldwater...for his first Senate term. That doesn't mean he's "old". He's just "experienced"
Seriously? Congrats on a great post.
Nice Job Ass. Casey!
I especially liked the -Casey Removed Link and the -Casey Removed Link.
Whenever I Buy Viagra (Casey Removed Link) I'll look back on this post
for inspiration.
Seriously though, great work as we have come to expect from you. (Prior to your associateness)
Thanks Sly and because of your age, I would expect that you need those Viagra links. I'll start forwarding them to you so you know where to buy your next supply. =)
BTW I have a ticket to see this years TED live.
Wow! Did you get the senior discount? To be honest I'm really envious and wish I could fit in your pocket to tag along.
Am I the only one that noticed you just called Casey an ass?
Can't emphasize the "work" and "persist" elements enough.
But without passion you'll just burn out, so unless you really love this stuff you're probably better off trying something else.
Love the embarrassing pic of Rand.
...and did I spot a dinosaur in there?
How did that dinosaur get in there!?!? Must have chewed his way through the site to my post! Maybe Roger can be buddies with the dinosaur!
Way to keep Rex alive Casey. If only there were a way I could throw images in the comments I'd go on a Rex spree.
Haha.
Excellent first post as an Associate! However, did I miss the post that announced you're now an associate? Great job. Looking forward to many more posts. Are you going to get to work on any of the R&D stuff there too? I like your https://www.mozpoints.com!
what? thumbed down for saying "congrats, good work on your site!" Maybe I should leave the link out??
Who knows, could just be someone on a thumbs down spree. Don't take it to heart.
What's up with all these spam posts?
Maybe spammers don't like posts about being successful?
great stuff...great fundamentals.......these will build a great foundation ;~)
Tony
"Foundation" is right! I have found this post a bit late. Each of the 8 things is commonsensical enough, but it's good to have them combined together, and what a nice refresher to read on a rainy morning (not to imply it would have been less nice amind sunshine, but on some days one especially requires stimulation!).
Anyway, since this is not just about any success but SEO success, there is one thing I would add that is also simple but important enough, I think, to be included with the rest, and it's SEO-specific.
KEEP UP! The industry changes so darn fast. We need to be alert, well-informed and flexible. (Back in the day, how long did it take you to stop optimizing meta keywords? :)
One obvious consequence of the above: in an effort to keep up with SEO change, one could do a lot worse than start by reading SEOmoz.
Thanks for this excellent post, Chenry!
Great list, and not too surprising, the list for success never seems to change too much. There are no silver bullets. But always a good reminder.
While I think all these are important, personally, I think "passion" must be at the heart of any success. If nothing else, you may need the passion to drive the other 7.
For anyone breaking into the field, okay...really anyone in the field... I think one of the most important things to go along with these "secrets" is to take in as much as you can. Unfortunately, as you grow within the field and move up, it becomes even more challenging to keep up on the reading and thought exchange.
Great motivational post!
I've seen this TED talk before and it was a shoot to my head like "get up and go to work now"!
Hi chenry!
I have never seen any SEO blog which workd so hard like this one. Its great experience to read it. I bookmarked it and will keep reading continue all the upcoming posts. All 8 points I have put in my mind and think it will be really helpful for my seo career. Keep sharing such a wonderful informatio.
I have one more place which is related to SEO and can helpful to all. This is the link to see how can you increase traffic.
-Casey Removed Links
Its true.
Thanks

Hey Presenca10. Welcome to mozland!
In addition to what Sly said, about hanging out here at the SEOmoz blog, add YOUmoz to your read list and after a few months, you'll run circles around the dudes you hired.
Hello,

Inspirational stuff....nice to pick your head up from the data every now & again to get back to what & how we should be doing things!
7.) Serve - how about some charity work?? :-)
Great explanation of the foundation of SEO. A post like this can really help and motivate someone who is just starting to enter into the SEO "world".

I just want to emphasize on the importance of persistence when it comes to SEO... my personal free website: sallyahmed.com has reached 3 out of 10 in Google and was in page one for flash animation and free flash animation download and now it is not even listed under it’s own name. I sort of let go of the website for the past three months, mistakenly thinking that my old content will feed itself...
Well it didn't, I guess Google has become smarter these days changing the algorithms and making sure those out dated sites are flushed down the drains. I am pulling my sleeves up again and going to rework the site again focusing on fresh content and links to get the site listed again…
Don’t give up on SEO and never take it for granted…
Cheers
Sally
very good
Really good advice here. Very inspirational words!!.
Fantastic post, thank you.
What a great post. Some inspiring ideas made, and I'll certainly be putting some of them into practice!
really good advice here, and ... what a great idea to coin this acronym - as if your stuff wasn't quite useful, no, you put in extra in excess!
Thanks a lot, like it!Helm
I got some where this >> Read. Learn. Hypothesize. Test. analyzes...then rank!
Tad bit jealous... Rand is rocking the Tee Shirt! I have to stop working client jobs & ramp up the jogging to catch up :)
Seriously, I really liked #8. It is so important in any aspect of life. But in this world of ever changing elusive algorithms you have to be able to take the "lumps" fix 'em and move on.
Good post.
Great post!
I'm a believer of having a right-brain type of SEO philosophy where we find subjectivity amidst all the nitty gritty facts and details we skim through everyday.
Having powerful words like these truly speak of having an emotional mind and a creative heart in a very technical industry.
It's about analyzing what we do, and synthesizing it to create stories that depict the value of our work.
YESYESEO!
Great article.
I agree with you.
A person who does SEO, doesn't just do it because they have to. They do it because they love it.
Thanks for the 8 secrets!
Thanks for passing on that video. Always nice to hear what makes successful people tick.
As a newbie to SEO, I especially believe in experimenting with new tips and techniques that I pick up from SEOmoz. Practice does make perfect, and it's easier to really learn something if you try it for yourself!
Very motivational post. All eight are dead on.
i think this will be a fantastic foundation for me to start my SEO career on its given me more of an understanding of what is to come ( cant wait for the challenges)
Fantastic post =]
I like the Serve part of the equation. Back in the day I felt like we had to keep everything secret. Now I am truly embracing the community and open source nature of SEO. There is so much work, clients, and oppourtunity for all.
I love the snazzy acronym you came up with :D
Glad to see that you're an official moz associate now Casey. Your YouMoz posts have been some of the best. Looking forward to seeing more of your writing on the main blog.
Also, that photo of Rand in the SEO Chick t-shirt is so awesome!
shirt is funny but doesn't rand also kinda look like the mac guy from Always Sunny in Philadelphia https://twitpic.com/qex1b
I whole heartedly agree. But wouldn't Rand be on "It's Always Sunny in Seattle?"
Nah. He'd be "It's only sunny 58 days a year in Seattle"
You get props from me just for the wannabe Rand image. Great post!
Thank you, great post. These are many of the things I love about SEO. 1, 2 and 4 stuck out to me. I think if you look at SEO industry leaders, many of the stories are about people who stumbled into the industry worked hard and tested different strategies and eventually became experts.
"I would be sitting on a beach in Tahiti, sipping mai tais".I don't see why you can't run a successful SEO company from Tahiti. Isn't most SEO work done remotely anyways?
Ha, well don't let everyone know that! Otherwise everyone will want to become SEOs and the work will be hard to find! I usually find myself working in a office looking out the window at the nice weather.
Thanks Casey! I've never known a community that worked so hard than the SEO community. Every night there are a group of people up working late, burning the midnight oil. I think you hit the nail on the head here.
And congrats on your first post as an Associate!
Thanks Jen!
TED vids are always so inspirational. Passion is and should be the heart of what we pursue because it makes everything that follows it that much easier to tackle.
i agree... there was a cool one on AIDs and this chick was talking about how everyone knows sharing needles is bad and they know where to get clean needles but because they made it illegal to carry clean needles nobody does... she made some pretty good points about how governments policy can break some common sense
I often find myself spending too much time watching TED vids. I find a lot of them to be very useful.
For me personally persistence has always been the most important factor for SEO success. Even though I would still consider myself a "noob" in the SEO world with 2 years professional exerience, in that time I have learned a great deal from my mistakes.
I doubt there are many people on this site that could truley say they have never messed up or done something really stupid in relation to SEO. Whether that is over linking a site and getting booted out of the SERPS or killing the conversion rates on a page because you were only looking at SEO. (no...I have never done these things :)...never!)
Its at these moments that you must pick yourself up, dust it off, and persist onward.
As for myself I did awful things in my beginning... and that's why I decided what the hell was meaning SEO seriously... and discovered SEOmoz
For something this new...you almost have to learn as you go. Hopefully others getting into the industry can at least learn hands on with someone experienced, and not have to deal with the wrath of a pissed off client....actually not a bad idea there, start a website that does SEO job shadowing...maybe working only on non-profit sites? Someone can steal that idea :)
And I will admit that SEOmoz helps a lot.
Thanks, that's an effective post with good examples of how we can continue to learn and grow.
Applying SEO to a TED clip is something we should do more often too!
Thanks for the motivation, very inspirational ...you got to love SEO to succeed.
